They take place on boring ass Earth with no Sonic characters but Sonic himself, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman. You wouldn't tell the movies were Sonic movies if you removed team Sonic. The movies are largely pieces of media just for casuals who don't really care about Sonic. So, when Hesse injects some deep lore cut in the background, Sonic fans feel assured that the movies are still Sonic media. That's why the movie references are better received than the comic references. The movies desperately need them.

Bollers wrote Watson and Holmes which was nominated for an award while Ian went onto make IDW and Frontiers.
