I am like 90% certain that the smashing success of Shadowbringers has led to the dev team becoming insulated and smelling their own farts, because comparing Dawntrail to like, literally any other game even in adjacent genres is embarassing. What's Dawntrail offer? A shallow story that's 3x as long as it needs to be, the same 8 dungeons we always get, and the easiest raid series in the game's history. That's it. There's nothing else to do, and the realities of level sync and job design ensure the hundreds of lower level duties aren't any fun because your class doesn't get to have a rotation. No other game is doing that because it's fucking stupid. FFXIV is archaic, there is a weird refusal to change or do new things or take risks, and there is no way they're continuing to double down and push needed changes to later patches if they're actually playing other games and seeing how bad this one looks right now.FFXIV briefly dethroned WoW as the top dog and I swear they became unbelievably complacent after that point. Endwalker patch content sucked, almost everything about dawntrail sucks beyond the dungeon bosses being more interesting, and we're being told to wait until next expansion, another TWO YEARS from now, for job reworks that will probably just be more small changes because they're fucking terrified that johnny no thumbs might be able to tell he's bad at DRK.I dont want this game to die, but I'm fucking desperate that they'll see massive sub bleed over DT's lifespan, because if there's one thing a decade of Destiny taught me it's that nobody gives a fuck about quality or pushing the envelope until their bottom line is at risk. The worst part of DT that ruined it for me is how soulless everything feels. There's shockingly little new music and almost none of it is particularly memorable. I can't remember any of the trial themes, which has never happened before. All the minor NPCs look like someone used randomize a bunch of times. They all wear the same clothing too, pretty much. Except for maybe Wuk Evu, none of them have anything interesting or funny going on. Plot threads just appear and disappear with no warning.
