There's nothing that says an EGO user has to be especially strong either, same as how you can get distortions that are outright non-combat oriented. Literal canto 1 level shitters is a bit much yes but I don't see anything wrong with them staying comfortably mid tier and able to be wiped by top tiers. Also library feels like a poor comparison because the games are very different storytelling styles.

Rupture has remained relatively strong solely because it's a consistent string of pure damage regardless if you get a big stack or not. I finished Metamorphosis, what a horribly sad book. The meaning, I think, is very on the nose, but even so, it really affected me and I think I'll be melancholy all day. Poor Gregor, he was so determined to provide for his family that upon transforming his first thought was that he needed to get to work. Reading him agonizingly slowly lose every vestige of his humanity, not from his condition but rather the complete isolation and neglect was very uncomfortable. What strikes one right off the bat is, even before his family knew what had happened to him, his family for the most part is angry at him for sleeping in and rather than being concerned about his health, they are worried he will lose his job, and thus end their life of luxury (Gregor mentions neither his parents nor his sister do much during the day). They take him completely for granted, and once he becomes useless to them, they resent him. His sister has some lasting feelings of obligation towards him, but as soon as her new reality starts to seriously affect her comfort, she turns against him even more than his parents.Gregor never really did anything for his own wellbeing before transforming and strangely, he really doesn't much after. He never makes an earnest attempt to communicate with his family (couldn't he have scratched words on the floor? He could speak at first but then lost the ability, etc). Sure, his family never tried to communicate with him either, but still, Gregor seems to have some kind of learned helplessness that carries over from before he transformed. Overall, a pretty sad, haunting story that will stay with me for a long time, especially given I've had family members become disabled. It makes me feel bad for Kafka, I can't imagine this didn't come from deep within. Whereas Mersault is just 11/11/13 no conditionals, 11/14/17 with conditionals, and 12/19/24 with conditionals AND regret. His skill 1 is always garbage, and you kinda need to use it a good amount since it's his only method of gaining charge outside of block, and both his skill 2 and skill 3 spend it. Even if you decide you're gonna use only electric Screaming to power him up, you need to use that skill one to help fuel it AND now you are relying on two EGO to make him work. Yes his slash fragility and defense level down are nice, but overall he needs a lot of EGO support and precautions to do what Ishmael can do effortlessly. She doesn't worry much at all about gaining charge, doesn't spend a ton, and has incredibly reliable numbers.

So many EGO you really want to use take Gloom (Solemn Lament, Rime Shank, Bygone Days Yi Sang (massively count positive with echos possibly due to a bug??)). Just finished Canto V and goddamn, I think it might actually edge out IV for best yet. Granted I'm a bit biased since Ishmael is a qt redhead tomboy, but I did really enjoy the themes and recursive relationships of destructive obsession. I thought Ahab was a more compelling villain than Dongrang. Her charisma and her ultimately being as much of a predator as the whale she hunted stuck out more to me than Dongrang (who was also well written but ultimately a pretty ordinary guy. Farmwatch is him coming to terms with being a massive dick). The sea itself being cut into neat zones by some antediluvian piece of technology adds a lot of flavor to the City as well. The vast unknown beyond the port horizon where the lost and aimless sail to escape the City is just as artificial, nonsensical and horrific. The sea is just as false as the stars in this ruined world.Finally, the boss fight against Ahab was the most spectacular one yet. Fighting the Captain under the golden light of the whale's heart was something else. It wasn't very hard (especially compared to the Middle BB rape tornado) but it felt significant enough that I made sure to use Snagharpoon to clash every big skill Ahab tossed at me. My only complaint is that we didn't get to see more of the Great Lake. I hope Canto VI impresses as much.
