I had read The Wings back when Canto 4 was coming out, so I didn't talk about it in my recent blogs about the books, but I suppose I'm curious what people here thought about it. I also read Crows Eye View but that's pretty hard to discuss for a lot of reasons. Last night I reread Wings with a better translation I think and... I'm still not a huge fan. Not that it was bad, but it's just so... Odd. The unnamed protagonist is so pathetic, and I get that is sorta the point, of him waking up from some long dream of carefree sloth, but it was just so weird. There's really very little English language discussion of the story so there are aspects of it that are kind of hard to parse. I don't really understand what he meant by a "stuffed genius" for example. Also the whole aspect of him being "married" to this whore and being either too retarded or too mentally checked out to figure it out was kinda unsettling, but not really in an enjoyable way like The Stranger was for me. Again I get that him ignoring everything happening to him was sort of the point, but still. One thing I didn't understand is why the whore was letting him live with her. What was she getting out of that arrangement, if anything? I'm sorta confused. Obviously towards the end she got sick of him and tried to make him do nothing by sneaking him sedatives constantly, but why before that? Again maybe it's just that translations aren't stellar, or maybe I'm just a brainlet, but I've read the story twice now and still don't really like or fully understand it. As for Crows Eye View... It's some poems. Some good some hilariously schitzo, like 1 and 4. The story surrounding it's publication is pretty interesting though. I feel bad for Yi Sang of course, both CIW and Wings were written when he was dying of tuberculosis. I'd like to hear some people's thoughts on the story I suppose. I don't see it moving from my bottom slot, unless I really dislike one of the remaining books, but I'd like to understand it more
