How do I develop self control? Every day I think about wanting to make a game but then I just go right back to the same old routine of scrolling through 4chan, jerking off, scrolling through my phone, playing games, repeat. I want to break this cycle but I don't have the willpower to force myself away from the things that bring me dopamine. I know I'm not the only one here who has this problem because I've been coming to these threads for an embarrassingly long time and I've read all the similar posts. >>498191787its a roguelite MMORPG. But not like those MMORPGS. Its not about grinding and doing quests like killing 5 cows. you spawn into the world as part of a invasion wave. and you have to work with your allies to capture territory and gain loot + higher stats. but the world is large and persistent and there is all sorts of invasions going on. other players may invade you, or goblins will invade you. You are always being watched. eventually you will face the horde.

>>498193878It depends on the contract they have with the publisher. Like how long they signed up to support with patches and such,
my enemy AI units always beats the player AI units even though they have the exact same stats and there should be some randomness involved, and I have no idea what could be causing it. >>498193705>current year>there's STILL not an MMORPG-style card game that takes the best elements from HxH's Greed Island arc or YuGiOh's Duelist Kingdom arc and combines that into a playable experience where exploring the world, finding cards, and battling other players comes together as a cohesive in-world experienceIt truly baffles me, this is the wet dream of every card game player. But then again, pokefags have been asking for a genuine open world Pokémon game for decades and Gamefreak still shits out the same template based slop. Card games are pretty niche so there might not be an incentive for studios to take a risk on what would probably have to be a pretty big budget project in order to function properly.

>>498195015the whole "battling other players" thing is where it gets sloppy. If they're AI then it's very similar to other single player cardgame campaigns. If they're real, then this doesn't really work in a long term MMORPG. The entire game would be filled with irl Weevil Underwoods with min-maxed decks taking all the cards from noobies. You'd have to do some kind of battle royale type thing, and that would take some thinking, which is unheard of for corporate studios.

Now I pity everyone. Even when I go walking I see sober normies who are not even present. They walk while their eyes are glued to their phones or they have large headphones in and have 0 awareness of the surroundings. WTF? >>498196559in my defense that's not even the real name
>>498195471Maybe it could be like a Pokemon/Runescape hybrid where there's safe zone cities surrounded by wilderness areas full of monsters and NPCs. Players go out into the wilderness to do raids, grind low level monsters, fight NPCs, and earn cards. Then you can go back to the safe haven cities and battle other players in that city's "gym". That way there's opportunities for building different decks for grinding and decks for PvP fights. There could be random world events like a full moon or a meteor shower or whatever that might make certain cards more powerful. Maybe like in Pokemon certain cities are dedicated to a certain element and cards with that element get bonuses in those cities' gyms. Anything to create additional variables that encourage players to switch up their decks and prevent metas from forming and getting stale. Easier said than done of course.
>>498187251The youtube grifters. They made the entire process look super easy. Compound on top of that they keep getting shown games from a decade ago as making millions (rather than games of today) and people probably think "woah I can do better than that." All while ignoring just how much more the bar was raised in that 10 year period. For better reference imagine being shown games released in the early 90's making millions of dollars all while in current era and completely ignoring the fact just how far the bar has been raised. You're not likely to get away with graphics or gameplay at those levels today.I hate social media soooo much it's Unrealâ„¢. Today's message sponsored by Tim Sweeney for $10,000. Use Unrealâ„¢ or get give up!
>>498195471there's only one tcg where the playerbase would work for this. It's Pokemon TCG. It's the only game where you have masses and masses of young kids that have no idea what they're doing, and only a small part of the playerbase are competitive tryhards. >>498196914This sort of attitude will cause you to fail at making a game. If you set out to make money, you are going to fail. If you set out thinking that you're too good for/unable to make Fifth gen console graphics, you will fail. If you want to go beyond that, right now we seem to be around 6th gen for solo devs as long as you have good stylization- with the caveat that both 5th and 6th generation tier graphics can make full use of the inbuilt modern graphic processing an effects to lean on. However the flip side of this is that if you want a good style in either of those you cannot use prefabs and store assets and must make them yourself, so boot up blender, pick your poison (Bevy, Unreal, Unity, engine autism) and get to work, anon.

If the command queue is signaled 100 times per frame and your game is rendering at an average of 300 FPS (the queue is signaled 30,000 times per second), the game could run for about 19.5 million years before the 64-bit fence value will overflow and wrap to 0.but my game needs to run for 19.6 million years

How would you handle combat in a King's Field like with wasd+mouse controls? I liked the slow paced combat they had but obviously having proper camera controls trivializes it. You could limit turning speed but that might feel jarring with the kbm controls. I'd like to find a way to have the slow and methodical combat without it being a total snoozefest.

Alright, got infinite terrain with a fully directional chunk trigger system operating on virtual chunk space coordinates. Have a full simulation layer now, finally decoupled from the renderer. The map being shown is not anywhere near the amount of chunks I want for render distance, or how I want them to load in / out. Going to be doing 49 chunks and loading outside of the view of the player at all times. This is just for demonstration.Next up is fix a few artifacts, do clipmap, expand the terrain to the full 49 chunks I want ( with LOD ), and then do lighting.Praise be to the King Jesus Christ.

There's no internet, I don't remember there being any TV or anything like that. It's just us - some old people, some young people, one from the Netherlands, some local. Then we go out and we lay hedges, except for one day where we work with volunteers to weed out poisonous plants. >>498230191huh?>Spawning a thread for each bullet sounds like overkill. Threads are relatively heavy in terms of memory and system resources. For a bullet-hell game like Touhou, you’ll likely want to manage a large number of bullets efficiently. Instead, consider using a more efficient object pooling technique. Object pooling allows you to reuse objects that are no longer active, rather than creating and destroying them repeatedly. Here’s a rough outline:

Can someone please tell me how this light flicker looks? I'm aiming for that retro vertex pseudo lighting, which actually just changed the underlying shading on geometry.Don't worry too much about the whole tower sections lighting up, that can be addressed later with subdivision. It's an absolute must that light rendering in Unity is set to 'Not Important'.https://youtu.be/qqzBm4RaJvY
>>498231779you're basically saying just make open world games seeing as it's the only genre with consistently bad OSTs
>>498231750Realtime GI tends to suffer from a delay in light propagation as you move the camera. It takes a moment for the GI calculation to catch up with the light bounces.
If one of the main mechanics of my game has you effectively bullying chibi scientists by picking them up and dropping them places as a big monster, would anyone think twice if all scientists were female? Or would it be fine?
>>498232042there are games people don't mind having their own music on though, you can be more lenient with those too.
>>498232065GI is global, it doesn't care about your camera, you're thinking screen space garbage where the lighting intensity changes as the camera moves to show more or less of the light source
>>498232235That's not what I mean. No matter how "global" it is, it's not rendering the light in the parts of the scene you're not looking at. Light bounces from outside the camera will affect the visuals in non-screenspace shit but it's still not calculating the lighting for stuff outside the camera. Once you move the camera it has to calculate that stuff.Global Illumination refers to the simulation of real lighting, not in the literal meaning of global. You can have screen space GI and it's still GI. It just comes with downsides like light that's outside the camera not affecting the scene and similarly reflections not reflecting stuff that's not being rendered in the camera.
>>498232065Basically, the problem I'm seeing is specifically if you look deep into a cave, you see light bleed through a terrain after some threshold. Also, I noticed that when you stand in the shadow of a large terrain feature, something changes with the directional lights to where it thinks you're inside a cave. There's a very stark light contrast within just a few steps of walking out from a large shadow.>>498232235GI is world space, but it does care about your camera location, because there's no way it can run for an entire open world without some kind of distance cutoff.

>>498232961>That sounds like a bug but it could also be an issue with their specific GI solution.I assume they're just firing a few raycasts up and if enough of them are occluded, they consider that you're in a "cave" environment and crossfade the directional light properties to that of a darker scene. Light isn't a mechanic in this game, so cave lighting is much brighter than a realistically lit cave.

Another janky thing I just noticed in Satisfactory: the occlusion culling is probably 1 frame delayed, so if you're rapidly occluding and unoccluding objects, the objects will flash in and out, such as in the case when climbing a hanging ladder while looking through the handrails. My point with bringing this and the GI thing up is that you don't need to fix every janky little thing in your game to have a great game. So long as you don't have severe game-breaking bugs, focus on adding content rather than trying to polish away these little things.

do you think it's more interesting/better for a long, open-ended sandbox game to have>A: Less weapons but with more unique movesets that can be upgraded so that all weapons are "usable" even in endgameOr>B: More weapons but each weapon in a weapon category shares very similar movesets, though they have different effects and abilities sort of like terraria and get progressively "better" with lower tier gear being kind of unusable for the endgame
>>498234491i like B, but I also think A sucks, sorry. So long as you don't have disposable diablo MMO loot I think you're fine

So, the ultimate goal is to make a 10/10 demo that will get your work some traffic, find enough people to make a team for the game, and then spend the next number of years working before returning here with an actual game release?

Yo wait, I got a baller idea. What if you make the base weapon really unique and then for each boss you kill or whatever progression thing you have you can throw it's soul into it and it gets a new appearance and some additional effect like a projectile or burning enemies, etc but retains the same moveset? How's that for progression?

>>498234491If I had to guess I'd say most people prefer B. Or at least that's what they're used to.If you go with B you gotta make sure you got enough variety and exciting things to find. One of the things I hated the most about Valheim was that there was so little loot to be found. There's only a couple somewhat special weapons and there's nothing special about how you get access to them. That along with the lack of variety in the content were the biggest downfalls of what could've been a 10/10 game.More recently I played Core Keeper and that had more interesting loot but the devs somehow managed to make the game into something that can be beaten in a session or two. If you're going for that Terraria style progression you gotta find ways to slow the player down without making it feel like a grind.

>>498224484I too am a NEET and 4 hours or so seemed to be about my limit too. That's when I was trying harder as well. Right now just getting about 2 hours requires a lot of internal motivation/forcing myself to do it but it's a consistent 7 days a week so about 14 hours weekly. I wish I could get 8 hours average 5 days a week, that's enough that I wouldn't feel guilty taking the other 2 days off and just gaming. Not to mention at 8 hours I'd be progressing on my game much faster.
>>498235292Ragnarok Online card & weapon tier system was pretty cool. Lower tier weapons have less damage (obviously), more card slots and less bonus damage per upgrade but are easier to upgrade. As you go up in tier damage goes up, card slots go down and upgrading gets more difficult.Certain cards and card combinations were incredibly powerful so many builds would look for a middle ground where they'd have a decent bit of damage but still had 3 card slots to build a nice card combo (4 slots was max). People would make specific weapons to grind on certain types of mobs that were good xp at high levels.
