I had a dream that From Soft made a 4-player Dark Souls game that whose scale of grandness or whatever you want to call it was somewhere between Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. You had four roles, where someone would play the sword and shield knight guy, someone plays the dexterity guy, the mage guy, and the big armor heavy weapon guy. It was called Soul Quartet. Maybe someone should make that, it would probably be fun.

Lol at the dev's unashamedly rising the pricing so much.>$44.99I just know the lapdog fanboys will make any excuse for this while crying and moaning over a game being 9.99 and not offering 100 hours of gameplay. The most recent low price seems to be before full release, at 5.99.How many of these devs are pulling this stunt the moment they have a make it game? Seeing this and seeing many gamers defend it so hard with all manners of excuses while hypocrtically looking in disgust at unpopular indie games just asking for 9.99 really makes me want to make a great game and flaunt it in front of them pre-release, just watching them beg for it and then release it at $44.99. They'll buy it, these types are always the same once the horde mentality consumes them.

when you play games, how important is the detail on a character design?I feel like detail is one of those things artsy people focus on that normal people don't give a fuck about at all.
>>498337349He's right
>>498337349I take your points and would definitely use something like that for a top down/isometric, where detail wasn't so important, but my game is first person so I definitely wanted the cornerstones to break up the silhouette just a little. Provide some character. Yeah I could make the cornerstones separate objects but I'm trying to form good habits now in simple hardbody objects so I'm not complete dog shit when I have to create stuff like complex organic models (higher poly animals/people etc). While you're showing off, do you have any of those you'd like to share with the class? All in one object with topo visible for us to assess?
>>498337848Artfags are trannies and you can successfully ignore them. If regular players like your game, then the artfags will draw "fan" art of your game anyways to hop on the latest trend. However, you should consider your characters as an extension of the work you're trying to create and the living breathing soul of your game. If you're going to do this hard work anyways, then you might as well try to do a good job, right?

>>498338236yeah it's just tough to know how to be more "holistic" about art in games. I think minimalism of n64 games is ideal but I literally don't know how to do that same level of detail with modern graphics, I don't want to make low poly and I don't want my shit to look like empty soulless testbed terrain. Tempted to ignore thinking about art beyond "replacing placeholders" I think games as art is a huge meme, btw.Like this would look great as a poster but I do not care for the subject at all.

>>498339048Honestly dude if you’re into the art side, it’s worth digging in and experimenting until you find that sweet spot between minimalism and modern detail. I would take time off from regular dev work to just draw or model and prototype the art itself. You don’t have to go full low-poly to get that N64 vibe so maybe look into stuff with flatter textures or stylized lighting that’s more suggestive than realistic? You could go for something that feels minimal, but with a modern edge kind of like Journey or Inside, where the style is super simple but still atmospheric. If “games as art” feels overhyped to you then don’t even focus on that but just build an aesthetic that matches your vision and the rest will follow. You do have a vision, right?

You do have a vision, right?Yeah absolutely. Vision is why I'm so caught up on this aspect of dev. It's hard to think of what I want because it's a very minimal kind of style, I don't want to do anything over decorated, but I like stuff that has a "post low-poly" look. Something like Shadow of The Colossus or maybe even FF11 level of detail, sparse but still appealing.I'll probably do more art stuff, until I figure it out. It feels like an easy thing to fuck up.

>>498340795it's a boss battler, but there's also a settlement development phase between the battles. So you have events that can happen in your settlement, the items you get in the hunt can help unlock new technologies. There's permadeath for characters, so you need to raise new possible hunters on your settlement, all while keeping a close count on the amount of resources, or else everyone on the settlement just dies and you lose. So if you take those settlement mechanics, and just do a regular monster hunter boss battle for the hunting phase, you have a very solid survival horror boss battler in a video game form. Also, because it's a videogame you don't have to do all the bookeeping yourself, which is probably the worst part of the board game.

In an rpg, outside of stealing and lockpicking, how can you make dexterity/agility based characters fun and interesting? In most games they are relegated to sneaking and stealing and stuff, but I really can't think of ways to make them fun. Other archetypes (even warriors) I have an easy time with making interesting, but agility evades me.

Celeste is a quintessential and disappointing manifestation of the current indie game zeitgeist. Of course it has to be pixel art and of course it has to be a 2d platformer, and of course it has to be a metaphor for being a transgender or whatever. This superficial garbage is like anti-art and is only praised by retards who listen to game journalists and the youtubers who parrot game journalists. Most people lack the capacity to know what is good. There is like a program in their brains where they hear someone say that something is good, and other people are saying something is good, and they want to be a part of the hard and feel valued by the herd because of evolutionary reasons where you don't want to stand out because you get picked off by wild animals predators. So you hear a bunch of people say something is good, and you go and try it because you want to fit in, and what do you know it doesn't make your computer catch on fire when you run it so it must be good. This is the vast majority of what people call "good" and it's not just in games, it's in everything from food to ideology. Once you see that part of the nature of reality you literally cannot unsee it. Hopefully you guys are trying to make better games than Celeste.
>>498351182>would you consider working on someone else's game and rev-sharing? A team?I'll do it for free. Seeing how I ain't that good or decent at anything, it's the least I can do. Yeah.

>>498351547Indie games started out as this wild west of creativity, where anything could happen. But now, even indies have these unspoken rules, like you have to be quirky and low-budget looking to be authentic. You either play to the indie expectations or risk getting lost in the noise. Artistic integrity often means ignoring trends entirely, which is at odds with the current indie culture that thrives on them. If you're genuine and want to make something genuinely good, make something that feels timeless, like it makes sense regardless of what era you play it in. Something that archeologists will dig up 1000 years from now and say "this is a good work of art" rather than "this was another derivative work that is only a product of its time and nothing more"

(i.e. imagine a game with undead enemies, and if you throw a healing potion at them it damages them. but there's absolutely no reason to throw potions at any other point in the game, the mechanic exists just for this.
