this will not be better than actual code for gameplay focused games for the next 500 years.

But in a surreal, exploration focused adventure game, this could literally be genre defining.
>Like AI Dungeon, but in a 3d minecraft style dream world. Anything the supercomputer can imagine is created, and ready for you to explore. Non-Euclidean Geometry is the default.
And imagine that but for a horror game.

I had a dream that From Soft made a 4-player Dark Souls game that whose scale of grandness or whatever you want to call it was somewhere between Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. You had four roles, where someone would play the sword and shield knight guy, someone plays the dexterity guy, the mage guy, and the big armor heavy weapon guy. It was called Soul Quartet. Maybe someone should make that, it would probably be fun.

yes. In 3D Dwarf Fortress you can have limbs cut off.

and yes, it is temporary if you find a healer or engineer. Certain Healers can grow your limb back by the power of God, and Engineers can make an advanced prosthetic from ancient precursor technology.

There are different flavors of ancient precursor technology.

Making a game is hard. Making a 3D game is especially hard. Making a AAA game takes almost a decade, unless you're just recycling the previous project every year like Assassins Creed and the like. Hey, maybe I should do that.

Not in this current game industry with all the layoffs, maybe. In a better job market I could probably leverage my transferable skills and experience in CSM development, to try and get in. But I hear it's very hard to get into EA and similar companies, and that you have to know someone. My sister's mom is an accountant at a company where a guy on the board of directors claims he knows all the cool people who worked on Halo 2, so maybe I have a shot.

What's the engine? Unity? That engine allows you to download older versions from their site, and you can always back up the older versions yourself. I don't see the downside to not updating. Some (not all) professional dev studios don't even update their tools until the project is complete unless absolutely necessary.

my game is going to get very strange in the end game portions.

I'm talking players being able to lay in bed and then enter a lucid dream state where they rewrite time.
>>
>>498323813
that's not true at all, judging by how many games make it big with bastardized PS1 graphics
>>
so basically, my RPG's trajectory is this:

1. You can go the normal route. Mundane weakness to mundane strength.

2. You can go the supernatural route. Mundane weakness to Spiritual strength. Where you can bend reality.

The player can completely miss this aspect of the game, I don't care if no one finds it.

The mundane classic hero route will be what most go for.

Would it be better to make a 3D model of the boss and do some arc-sys type magic to make it look 2D? I am figuring that the animations for the movesets will require a lot of tweaking during playtesting so it would be annoying if I had to animate traditionally.

the "AI" bubble has officially reached NFT levels of retardation, as in, AI evangelists are now as insincere or outright stupid as crypto evangelists by the time NFTs became a thing. this year you can really tell who was reasonably optimistic before and who was a cynical grifter all along. the latter are marching on in lock step.

>Right now it can only simulate existing games
no, it cannot. it's not simulating jack shit. it's auto-completing a video feed one frame at a time. there is no understanding of game mechanics. machine learning is completely the wrong tool to drive game logic. you can actually drive some limited parts of a game's presentation like a fluid simulation or an upscaling algorithm with machine learning and that's cool. there are already "AI water" assets for Unity and Unreal.
the pattern of useful machine learning is clear: PARALLEL COMPUTATION, APPROXIMATING something otherwise EXPENSIVE.
now look at CSGO: trivial to run on a cheap CPU, heavily single-threaded, needs to be precise and remember exactly what happened. can't guess and make shit up, that would ruin everything.
"whole game simulation" is a retarded idea. game loops are the opposite of what ML excels at.
>you're lucky to even get double digit FPS
you will get more realistic graphics at a better framerate. you won't get a game.
>the concept exists and is proven to work at a fundamental level
example of the wishful thinking this "AI" bubble has fostered. "the concept" is a failed idea from academic paycheck stealers.

it's especially hilarious that they are using a multiplayer game as training data. I guarantee you the developers behind this are NOT delusional enough to think you would ever be able to play their """game""" against other players. they chose CSGO for its limited play spaces and repetitive player actions, good for convergence.

Why transfer to a new engine? Unless it's one of those requirements where you need a new version since I vaguely recall that at least one console and mobiles games demand recent API's or whatever. No way can I update for that. I've tried in the past, I'm stuck in Unity 2018. 2019 breaks stuff.

What am I supposed to do when they're so demanding? Just make the whole game's art assets first, find relevant music, buy the sfx that feel right in my imagination, and learn programming so much that I can code the whole game in under a years time once I'm ready?
>>
>>498328697
All the lemons who dogpile on yandere dev are pseuds themselves who don't understand shit about programming and are just parroting social media posts. A subgroup of these same people who also happen to be game developers quietly do the same terrible antipattern shit in their own games.

Problem 1: Money, be the best and you get to be at the top raking in huge stacks of it
>all the cpu and gpu manufacturers are racing to the top
>never slow down to make sure stuff is of good quality and stable
Problem 2: Gamers wants max graphics/Triple A wants to outcompete all the other Triple A
>triple A probably develops on the highest end of all equipment
>extreme graphics + poor coding are feasible since it runs on the top end gear so max focus on art to outcompete the other triple A companies
And just like that, rather than stall and make sure stuff is well done, whether that be the development of GPU's not requiring tremendous amounts of electricity. Which in the US is getting a little too close to a wall outlets limit. Or for that matter making game's right so I don't have a freaking 1+ minute load time in Witcher 3. I hated that so much I got paranoid and would save frequently so I wouldn't have to redo all that stuff again.
>>
>>498330259
Big publishers make money with marketing because gamers are retarded sheep that do what they're told to do. It's way more difficult to do that as an indie.
>>
>>498330321
You are correct, but you're talking about the professional games industry where people know advanced graphics programming techniques and more or less understand where their variables live in memory. Ironically these people are not the problem as they know a lot more about how their programs run than your average unityslop.

The games industry uses a bunch of outsourcing often in low income nations with questionable skill levels. That's a big reason why big budget games have become so shit in the past decade or so. They're programmed by amateurs with maybe someone relatively skilled responsible for parsing together all that spaghetti code into something that resembles a game.

i've had too many indie game's get worse over the years or just outright suck at running. even when i had a cpu/gpu combo released after those games released. Arma 2 or 7 Days to Die struggled to work. seriously? just how poorly optimized are they to not be able to work that well? worst was when some years down the line other games in constant development started becoming massive lag fests and not worth playing. the dev behind Unturned sucks at optimizing and somehow made it worse over the years, from functioning and only getting laggy when I built large structures to just outright being laggy without me building a thing and going to what felt like <10 fps. I wouldn't of desired a new PC as bad if these game's weren't so poorly optimized. The irony being I proceeded to play them for a combined <5 hours since getting the new PC and went back to playing my usual indie games.

Well yeah that's why Windows sucks and why most software is terrible. People who code it suck.

Yeah it turns out you actually have to know what you're doing (or gain knowledge until you know what you're doing) to get good results. You can cover it up with pretty art or a good story, charming characters. With just that, you can create a passionate fan base. But it's still a mediocre product if the product itself doesn't run well. You should have higher standards for yourself so that you can say:
>I have a lot of fans who love my game world and story and characters, AND the game runs well instead of running at 24 FPS on a modern computer

>$44.99
I just know the lapdog fanboys will make any excuse for this while crying and moaning over a game being 9.99 and not offering 100 hours of gameplay. The most recent low price seems to be before full release, at 5.99.

How many of these devs are pulling this stunt the moment they have a make it game? Seeing this and seeing many gamers defend it so hard with all manners of excuses while hypocrtically looking in disgust at unpopular indie games just asking for 9.99 really makes me want to make a great game and flaunt it in front of them pre-release, just watching them beg for it and then release it at $44.99. They'll buy it, these types are always the same once the horde mentality consumes them.

If it goes on long enough, you might gain enough perspective to know when to abandon a doomed project and hit the rest button. There's a huge difference between doing that and learning from your mistakes (maybe it was a failure to scope properly), and being someone who just keeps starting new projects because he can't commit to anything.

1.3k triangles for what is essentially a static cube on top of another static cube is terrible
this is a model made by someone who thinks models have to be airtight with no clipping because they don't know any better
picrel is basically your exact model with no textures
you do not need all those extra quads, you don't need whatever the fuck is happening in those weird trapezoid sections on a completely flat surface
the galvanized(?) edges is a good idea but you'd be better off just making those separate meshes and clipping them in instead of trying to force the entire model to conform to that topology
it wouldn't be that bad if the model had more nuance but it's very flat and has almost zero characterization
if the model had nuance to it

I take your points and would definitely use something like that for a top down/isometric, where detail wasn't so important, but my game is first person so I definitely wanted the cornerstones to break up the silhouette just a little. Provide some character. Yeah I could make the cornerstones separate objects but I'm trying to form good habits now in simple hardbody objects so I'm not complete dog shit when I have to create stuff like complex organic models (higher poly animals/people etc). While you're showing off, do you have any of those you'd like to share with the class? All in one object with topo visible for us to assess?

Artfags are trannies and you can successfully ignore them. If regular players like your game, then the artfags will draw "fan" art of your game anyways to hop on the latest trend. However, you should consider your characters as an extension of the work you're trying to create and the living breathing soul of your game.

If you're going to do this hard work anyways, then you might as well try to do a good job, right?

yeah it's just tough to know how to be more "holistic" about art in games. I think minimalism of n64 games is ideal but I literally don't know how to do that same level of detail with modern graphics, I don't want to make low poly and I don't want my shit to look like empty soulless testbed terrain. Tempted to ignore thinking about art beyond "replacing placeholders" I think games as art is a huge meme, btw.

Honestly dude if you’re into the art side, it’s worth digging in and experimenting until you find that sweet spot between minimalism and modern detail. I would take time off from regular dev work to just draw or model and prototype the art itself. You don’t have to go full low-poly to get that N64 vibe so maybe look into stuff with flatter textures or stylized lighting that’s more suggestive than realistic? You could go for something that feels minimal, but with a modern edge kind of like Journey or Inside, where the style is super simple but still atmospheric.

If “games as art” feels overhyped to you then don’t even focus on that but just build an aesthetic that matches your vision and the rest will follow. You do have a vision, right?

That's brilliant, I'm thinking about going this route.

Yeah absolutely. Vision is why I'm so caught up on this aspect of dev. It's hard to think of what I want because it's a very minimal kind of style, I don't want to do anything over decorated, but I like stuff that has a "post low-poly" look. Something like Shadow of The Colossus or maybe even FF11 level of detail, sparse but still appealing.

I'll probably do more art stuff, until I figure it out. It feels like an easy thing to fuck up.

it's a boss battler, but there's also a settlement development phase between the battles. So you have events that can happen in your settlement, the items you get in the hunt can help unlock new technologies. There's permadeath for characters, so you need to raise new possible hunters on your settlement, all while keeping a close count on the amount of resources, or else everyone on the settlement just dies and you lose. So if you take those settlement mechanics, and just do a regular monster hunter boss battle for the hunting phase, you have a very solid survival horror boss battler in a video game form. Also, because it's a videogame you don't have to do all the bookeeping yourself, which is probably the worst part of the board game.

Yeah I've gained much better understanding but ehhh it feels like a ngmi game so development is definitely slowed by that fact. Now I know what I should do next time
>plan it a lot more and detail it down with semi specific milestones
>list estimated completion times for the various things
>think more carefully on what to make and which idea is also most like to /make it/
Oh and at this point abadon a game that feel like it's ngmi it within 1.5 years. I'd say sooner but I'm not super great at developing at high speed so I'd probably be stuck devving for a while before it reaches a state where I can tell if it's worth it or not.

yeah, but the mechanics are all painted with a survival horror aspect. The game is mean, if you don't do shit right you'll just get a game over and have to start again. Also it's not a dungeon crawler. There are no maps with objectives and a bunch of mobs. It's like Monster hunter in that sense, you go on hunts to find and kill the bosses. It's all about the boss battle.

I would add to this that if you really feel like a project has no hope but you still like it, come back and start from scratch when you're older with more experience. Saving the important projects for later means that the important stuff is going to be done by someone who has a lot more experience and thus is more competent of seeing that vision come to life.

In an rpg, outside of stealing and lockpicking, how can you make dexterity/agility based characters fun and interesting? In most games they are relegated to sneaking and stealing and stuff, but I really can't think of ways to make them fun. Other archetypes (even warriors) I have an easy time with making interesting, but agility evades me.

So the way I have it set up involves a second render pass. You render to an offscreen target, then the second renderpass uses edge detection and renders to a swapchain target.
I'm not sure how much control you have over the way things are rendered >>498337334, but with some modifications, the glsl might be helpful.

I'm not the guy who posted the models, to be clear, but I've rendered similar stuff before. Anons keep saying its a wireframe, but a wirefram would show you all the triangles, not the edges of the models.

It's just the demo, the EA is out there. And I did "self-snitch" after the game got accepted and after an update. It's just that I was lazy and retarded 'nuff to not check the requirement for the Next Fest and realized way too late that a demo was required for it.

If your game is good, you should really focus on Steam. If it's game jam slop then itch is a nice way to cope with being mediocre until you start spamming their forums complaining that people won't download your game.

You don't really think about it when you want to join at first, but there are a lot of extra things you have to do like joining the jam's discord and interacting with people, then when everyone posts their games you have to comment on them and give a rating or critique.

I don't really want to do that stuff right now. I'm more interested in trying to make something good, because we mostly haven't figured out how to do that in the indie space when compared to things like Chrono Tirigger and all these other things that indie devs cite as their LE RETRO INSPIRATION LOVE LETTER TO

But I'm an ESL and /lit/izens made me realize I'm too awful at it to have a chance. I'm 29, way too old to start doing something else.
>Honestly though, chin up and start working on something else. It ain't over till it's over. Just try not to dwell on it too much.
I can't. I'll just be repeating he same mistakes over and over again. I'll project hop and will end up doing nothing. I have to finish this project or at least try it, then start over anew. It's a sinking ship and nobody's going to play it. But I enjoy working on games or in my case on "prototypes".

I ain't going to give up. But you're right, I need to start over and do things the right way. Or at the very least, try making something that's playable and that works. No other engines. Just Unity and simple stuff.

Celeste is a quintessential and disappointing manifestation of the current indie game zeitgeist. Of course it has to be pixel art and of course it has to be a 2d platformer, and of course it has to be a metaphor for being a transgender or whatever. This superficial garbage is like anti-art and is only praised by retards who listen to game journalists and the youtubers who parrot game journalists.

Most people lack the capacity to know what is good. There is like a program in their brains where they hear someone say that something is good, and other people are saying something is good, and they want to be a part of the hard and feel valued by the herd because of evolutionary reasons where you don't want to stand out because you get picked off by wild animals predators. So you hear a bunch of people say something is good, and you go and try it because you want to fit in, and what do you know it doesn't make your computer catch on fire when you run it so it must be good. This is the vast majority of what people call "good" and it's not just in games, it's in everything from food to ideology. Once you see that part of the nature of reality you literally cannot unsee it.

Hopefully you guys are trying to make better games than Celeste.

>>
>>498351547
Indie games started out as this wild west of creativity, where anything could happen. But now, even indies have these unspoken rules, like you have to be quirky and low-budget looking to be authentic. You either play to the indie expectations or risk getting lost in the noise. Artistic integrity often means ignoring trends entirely, which is at odds with the current indie culture that thrives on them. If you're genuine and want to make something genuinely good, make something that feels timeless, like it makes sense regardless of what era you play it in. Something that archeologists will dig up 1000 years from now and say "this is a good work of art" rather than "this was another derivative work that is only a product of its time and nothing more"

Lower the res of your textures. It's too high res for having no normal maps and no specific texturing to account for the shape of the object. When they used textures like that they were way lower res. It looks off when it's that high res.

Standards evolve over time. Low-poly should just whatever can run on low-end devices. Today, that would just be whatever runs on Intel integrated graphics and mid-tier $200-300 android phones (wouldn't bother going for lower than that, since those kind of people can't afford to buy games).

The texturing part is not that difficult, at least I've done some similar stuff with a drawing tablet in Blender. You can literally draw on the model with a pen. There's much better software for it than Blender, though; Blender's tools are fairly lacking.
The hard part is the actual drawing, I can't draw for shit. All I know are broad, dark strokes with subsequently smaller, brighter strokes on top.

You don't even need tessellation. So long as you're not being retarded, a $200 phone/laptop can render several hundred thousand tris (some over 1m) at the device's native resolution + refresh rate. That means if you dedicate about half your tris to the environment and half to the characters, you can easily have 10+ 5k tri character models in a scene.

In my experience with using the WIN32 API, I've noted that I only need a handful of functions from the headers. Therefore, simply writing the function declarations in a custom header, then namespacing said header off is a) feasible and b) handy.
As a plus, I dont have to deal with the ramnifications of being unable to name a struct "Rectangle" because windows.h did it first.

I had two.
One of them was some fanservice which I desperately wanted to add but it really didn't fit at any point.
The other is a mechanic interaction which I thought was cool when I first came up with my game idea, but as I fleshed the gameplay loop more, that fun mechanic interaction became awkward and didn't fit the rest of the game, it's a one off thing that exists for the sake of it and feels kinda janky. (i.e. imagine a game with undead enemies, and if you throw a healing potion at them it damages them. but there's absolutely no reason to throw potions at any other point in the game, the mechanic exists just for this. This isn't my situation but just a similar case for it.)

Children calling functions on parents is bad practice usually, but I guess you already know that so I'll skip this step.
Where and when do you call the function? If it's inside the child's _Ready function, then it won't work for example, because Children get _Ready first when they enter the scene tree, and their parents are set up later, so the parent might not be initialized yet.

In Oblivion I used to love collecting shiny coins and gems, I filled my shack with them and the blue stones that shine. Was very pretty.

I was always pissed that Skyrim changed the look so much. Oblivion looked really pretty and kitsch.

ArmA 3. The biggest hurdle was learning how to define a GUI with their system but now I can make.pretty much any mechanic good enough to test ideas.

Cris and Fygoon are like 2 specific internet archetypes.
>Insecure self hating weeb that tries to be superior and acts traumatized over SomethingAwful tier ideas of weeb culture
>Hides under layers of irony and smugness while influenced by basedjak culture and spews words like "tranime"
One will make his own Class of 09 and the other will end up like whoever hacked ChibiReviews and tried framing him as a pedo by being the one to put CP on his accounts only to accidently making him easy to get caught.

While you spent hours making midpoly models
I have already made three n64tier models
While you agonize over crunchy textures
I have used blurry 32x32 anti aliased texture cubes to texture 5 of mine
While you spend a month creating a perfect rendition a 1x1 square mile out doors area
I have already created an entire city in N64 style in that time
I am N64maxxing my output, while you are spending 5x the time I do less than a tenth of my ourput

I hate the look and feel of Japanese games. the character design is very off putting. picrel just makes me want to open Excel and do my budget. I'm sure these characters have compelling back stories and interesting personalities but I hate them. especially the blond man protagonist. this goes for resident evil 4 too.
