I don't think it completely takes away from the human tragedy. It has the potential to do that of course. Watering down the entire issue to "Innocent humans manipulated by a demon". But that's not exactly what happened. A desperate man invited an alien warforce onto the ship and was well aware of their potential cruelty while Maria was still alive. The fact that he thought he could get around that is still an act of human hubris.
