Fourth for I'm posting spooky pantsu in honour of the Anon who posts spooky pantsu
Gotta say, being flung into a tiny train car with three zombies and finding out LT opens the map instead of bringing out your pistol is pretty scary. I think combat tutorials shouldn't be in horror games.
some of the outbreak concept art is funny
Not really feeling re2 remake. Game fell off a cliff after the police station and was surprised how little was done with Leon and Claire. Going through Claire's story now and it just feels tacked on.
>>498881232doing her story now as in claire B?because it literally was tacked on, capcom said they weren't gonna do the zapping A/B scenario thing and everyone exploded so they rushed a B scenario
>>498881728Yeah, Claire B. Guess that makes sense then. Shame as I was really looking forward to her scenario.
>>498880085Why do they look so silly.
Are SH1,3, and 4 worth playing? Remake was my first introduction to the series and I found it pure kino
>>498883213japanese are silly individuals>>4988838571 is, in my opinion, the best in the seriesif the graphics don't scare you away you're in for a fantastic game3 was also really good4 was really good for the first half then goes "hey you're on an escort quest now being chased by a guy with a gun also your apartment doesn't heal you and you've got to deal with haunting spookeries also you have to retread the entire game over again"
>>498883857Absolutely, and I don't know why you didn't mention original 2. It is obligatory.Would also love to know what newcomers think of 2 after having played Remake first.

Did a writeup for a lot of my issues with SH2R (this is despite playing it for nearly 30 hours as well), if anyone is interested you can read the full thing- it's close to 5000 words so I won't copy and paste it into 20 separate posts:https://www.backloggd.com/u/BurningRed/review/2025650/I'll just share a part of it that I think sums my feelings up.>Immediately in the remake we see a failure to capture what his (Takayoshi Sato) FMVs could.>The opening FMV of Silent Hill 2 is odd. For such an otherwise conventional game in its narrative, its presentation here is offputting. An odd man looks in a mirror, eyes cast entirely in shadow, most of his face along with it, and he runs a hand over his face- not over the skin of his face though, more waving it in front, and the key aspect here is how we see James. The first time we see him is in the mirror, not an actual image of himself. Then, James pulls back and releases a deep sigh, collecting himself. It’s such an odd scene to start with, and the developers of the remake clearly thought so as well since they changed it.>In the remake, you see him examining his hands, a glimpse of his jaw and lips as he gulps, water on his hands and face from the sink, he rubs his hands, and you get a good look at his side profile as he raises his head, the shadows far lighter. Even the hand gesture is reduced to appear more normal. It’s a completely different scene now, and not in the dumb way some people say like “You know something is wrong with James now!”- no. You were always meant to think James is weird, but this removes so much depth and detail, the intentional presentation, it adds significant emotion to James when originally his face in the mirror was like an odd void, he was someone you questioned immediately, and now you just recognize him as worried or upset or traumatized.

>>498931369>Is the whole review just complaints about the cutscenes not being a carbon copy of the originals? My point there was how the difference in cutscene direction misses the point of what the originals were going for completely.I'll break down the contents of my review I guess. >Paragraphs 1-6Explaining some merits of SH2R and why I knew from all the way back in 2022 it would be perfectly fine and probably a relatively standout horror game for the 2020s, with the point being I wouldn't have been this invested in saying something had the turnaround on the game not been so extreme to the point where everyone is jerking it off for not being the worst thing ever made.>Paragraphs 7-13Explaining why Silent Hill 2 is so significant to many people and many game devs involved with the franchise and what a lot of the western games failed at in their imitation (this part is skippable, it's more calling Sam Barlow a retarded fraud than actually talking about SH2R).>Paragraphs 14-25Examination of where the game succeeds (James' expressiveness, art, understanding the nightmare and rules of originality (why I brought up the western title)), and then where the game fails in relation to these aspects (cutscene direction, narrative presentation and pacing).>Paragraphs 26-35Discussion of the voice acting and the intent behind the original, and where both HDC and the remake fails, as well as a look at how Angela's characterization (as well as James' in relation to her) is completely changed for the absolute worse within the remake.>Paragraphs 36-42Seething about how people complaining about remakes is purely performative and most people do just want a video game where they beat up monsters with a stick and solve easy puzzles, but simultaneously want to sound intelligent and like they care about art.>>498931918Thank you for considering.

>>498906898The idea of playing through a Bloober game is actually pretty scary to me just not in the way that they intended.
>>498926491I read the whole review, and I agree with pretty much everything, I'm just probably a little more negative (you say this review is only 75% of your negativity so maybe you actually are more negative than me). The new Eddie intro in the movie theatre doesn't impress me because it's just another example of Bloober feeling the need to "add" more symbolism to the game which ultimately detracts from the experience (and you touch upon this later in your review too). There are so many moments in the original game that were impactful because they were just normal moments, not to say they had no meaning but they just felt like they weren't drawing too much attention to themselves and felt more authentic. In contrast every character, place, puzzle, and moment in the remake has some odd reverence to it, as if the developer's are making a game based on their memory of Silent Hill 2, and it results in the game just feeling wrong. Some may think new players wouldn't have an issue with this because they no memories of the original, but I've actually felt this before with other remakes. I never played the original RE4 but I played the remake, and while it was an enjoyable experience, I always got the feeling that I was missing something, that the game I was playing could not stand alone as it's own work but was doomed to always be a recreation of another work. I think it's possible for remakes to be art, but for them to do that they need to take the right approach. A good remake (in any medium) needs to take the idea and spirit of the source material and find a new way to express that. The problem with video game remakes is that every developer approaches it as "let's just make the same exact game but better (because technology is more advanced now)" and that approach is fundamentally anti-art. Anyways, great review!
>>498941768>A good remake (in any medium) needs to take the idea and spirit of the source material and find a new way to express that. But this is literally what SH2R does and the main reason why the new cutscenes get shit on, because "REEE they are not the same exact scenes, with the same lines of dialogue, the same delivery, and the same cinematography". They very obviously tried to differentiate themselves enough from the original material. Whether they succeed at "evoking" the same feelings or not is up to the individual. But to say the did the exact same thing with better "technology" is simply absurd.
>>498941768>I never played the original RE4 but I played the remake, and while it was an enjoyable experience, I always got the feeling that I was missing something, that the game I was playing could not stand alone as it's own work but was doomed to always be a recreation of another work.Autism
reminder that Zero/Fatal Frame is the best october series to play
>>498943006No, SH2R does not try anything new. It's the exact same cutscenes just slightly changed, and obviously they are going to be worse because they are not authentic, they are just imitations. Remakes should take the general idea of the game and approach it as if you making it from scratch, like it's a new work of art. SH2R has the same structure, story, characters, cutscenes, and environments but worse. The devs do not want to make their own work of art, they want to "upgrade" the game they played 20 years ago, which is not a good approach to making art. Even the original SH2 devs working on SH2R wanted more changes but Bloober wanted to "stay true" to the original because they are not artists, they cannot create a new experience of their own.
>>498944747The SH2 director seems happy with the remake, I think you're just projecting.
>>498944747So in order to be a good remake, to you, they should have changed the structure, changed the characters, changed the story, changed the cutscenes, and changed the environments. And then put 'Silent Hill 2' in the box and sell that to people.Hmm... what a curious approach. Not sure how you'd sell that to Konami though.

>>498941768>The new Eddie intro in the movie theatre doesn't impress me because it's just another example of Bloober feeling the need to "add" more symbolism to the game which ultimately detracts from the experienceDidn't mind the addition because most of these remakes just add for the sake of adding, like I said. At least what I saw there was relevant and meaningful to the game's themes and motifs.>In contrast every character, place, puzzle, and moment in the remake has some odd reverence to it, as if the developer's are making a game based on their memory of Silent Hill 2, and it results in the game just feeling wrong.Yeah, it's hard not to notice that. The hospital box is now a big centerpiece, "There was a hole here" is on the disc art and a mandatory visit, stuff like that. It's much more a game about remembering the big SH2 moments rather than actually getting what SH2 was.>that the game I was playing could not stand alone as it's own work but was doomed to always be a recreation of another work.Absolutely. RE:4 often uses the original as a crutch, whether it be to lift from or excuse itself. Story is boring? Well, it's just trying to "fix" the RE4 story. Here's this throne Leon can sit in, but it feels horribly out of place and arbitrary here. I really didn't like it.

>>498943713As much as I liked them (specifically played 1-3 for PS2 and mask of the lunar eclipse for wii, all emulated), I really didn't like how they wouldn't let me pick harder difficulties until I'd already beaten them on normal:>find normal too easy>have difficulty feeling scared, because I can just blast through the vast majority of the game with only the cheapest shittiest film available>complete game and finally get to play on a more challenging difficulty>still have difficulty feeling scared, because I already know what's comingAlso regarding the first one, I feel like it needed more exposition regarding who Miku and Mafuyu are, and why their relationship as siblings is important, because from what I recall it really didn't give any at all and just expects you to keep chasing Mafuyu through the mansion just because.This made the "good" ending (in which Mafuyu escapes with Miku) actually feel less satisfying to me than the regular one (where iirc he refuses to leave for the sake of keeping Kirie's spirit company): I'd been given reason to feel sympathy for Kirie, whereas I didn't know anything and thus couldn't feel anything regarding Mafuyu, so him leaving only made me feel bad for her tortured soul being left all alone again.They did at least seem to have learned their lesson on that matter for the second one Mayu ;_;
>>498959147Thinking about them again has given me the urge to replay them now; it's been like 6-7 years, so hopefully there's a lot of spooks I've forgotten about.I suppose October really is the month for them after all.

>>498973829It’s cool. Had a bunch of stuff removed and altered from the original game (just like Barker’s other game) because the studio where they kept all those files burned down or something so the actual end product would have likely been some substantially more solid but what’s there is a pretty serviceable shooter with a neat story and horror elements. It’s a pretty good peer to FEAR I feel
>>498990589>>498990873>>499018137All he says is>As long as love lasts, foreverWhich can mean anything. It most likely means for as long as he loves her, while she goes through the disease again, like how James fell out of love with Mary during her disease and how it changed her as a person which made it easier for him to kill her.
So, somewhat (in)famous SH "lost media" is the last three chapters of The Boy scenario of the Play Novel, but I have a genuine question.Has anyone just ever tried to ask key staff on the Play Novel about it? Japanese people tend to be open about finished projects they contributed on, and Takayoshi Sato had renders of the FMVs he did for SH2 on his personal site (basically his resume) up for years, so it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone could find their personals or a linkedin equivalent. https://www.mobygames.com/game/23523/silent-hill-play-novel/credits/gameboy-advancePeople of interest seem to just be>Nobuhiro Masakura (CG Direction & Design)>Mihoko Hirayama & Yukiko Satake (CG Rendering)Though I don't know if the Japanese side already tried getting in contact about it. I know there's a small contingent aware of this, but most have written off Play Novel's sub scenario, both due to past seethe about the game in general, as well as the fact that the scenario just isn't that interesting (he just meets Alessa and then dies pretty much).
Playing re3r. Why is it so cheap and awful? Some ideas were nice,, but execution overall is lacking.
The long hallway scene at the end of SH2 describes the moment James "gives up" on Mary, or in a way, "kills", or at least contemplates killing her for the first time, your choice. James brings her flowers at the hospital and she acts very bitter towards him, telling him to fuck off at one point. And he does exactly that. As he is now walking down the hospital hallway, Mary immediately regrets her words and begs him to come back between cries and sobs, but James is not heard again in the scene. The only other "long hallway" that exists in the game is the one at the end of the hospital, where you are with Maria. In there, Maria is trying to catch up to James, but also running from "James", who has decided to kill her. Remake kind of fucked the hospital chase scene because Maria was running in front of me during the chase, and it looked stupid in the cutscene, kek. Might've been unintentional. However, they made the hotel hallway long enough for you to be able to have James keep walking throughout the entire conversation. In the original, you would reach the door at the end way before the end of the conversation. I thought that was a good touch.
How hard is it going for 10 star ranking in the original Silent Hill 2?
>>499033270Because it was handed over to Capcom’s B Team with substantially less resources to pull from so their main team could focus on Village or whatever and it also had a tight development window
>>499034974>However, they made the hotel hallway long enough for you to be able to have James keep walking throughout the entire conversation. In the original, you would reach the door at the end way before the end of the conversation.I guess it's nice on a quality-of-life level but wasn't it an intentional choice for the hallway to be shorter than the conversation? It's another subtle way the ending is decided, whether the player cares enough about Mary to want to listen to the whole conversation.
>>499035618In remake, if you run through the hallway, you reach the door by the time she finishes telling you "Are you deaf? Don't come back!"In original, this happens when you just walk, then you have to stop at the door if you want to keep hearing the conversation. In both cases, I think the length of the hotel hallway was deliberately calculated to match the timing of the conversation.I think it's nice that you CAN have James keep walking through the end of the conversation in remake. It really feels like you are intentionally ignoring Mary as she cries for help.

>>499111704- The truth is, I hated you...I wanted my life back!- James...if that were true...then why do you look so sad?that line really drives homes the bond these two had. no matter how much it may have degenerated in its final days the love was always there even in death. it's not even entirely selfish reasons. it's pretty heavily implied that mary wanted that as well, to not go through the suffering and pain any longer when she was on borrowed time anyway and the fact that she doesn't tell james that wasn't a factor in what he did at all essentially confirms that.
>>499120614stop stalking me you utter subhuman.
>>499179759It's one of my favorites but gameplay wise it is very flawed. No other game has given the sense of impending doom that this game has. The concept of switching characters over the course of like 3 days at various hours is good and really strikes home how bad things can get so quickly. But the gameplay is rough and if you go in blind you're gonna have a bad time. Siren 2 has some qol changes but its definitely one of those walkthrough required kind of games and not usually in the good way. You replay various areas as different characters usually in diff times to create some kind of butterfly effect that one person doing something different helps someone else in a way you can't foresee. But it has several rube goldberg type situations, maybe dont play on the harder difficulties unless youre a masochist
>>499180660>that line really drives homes the bond these two had.Well I wasn't denying that, I think that's part of what makes SH2 so depressing, James obviously loved his wife but it had taken such a toll on him he decided to kill her to end both of their suffering. The events of the game take place *because* of his guilt over killing Mary (I'm not saying this like you don't already know that by the way), even if Mary's forgiven him he still doesn't feel justified over what he did (and in a way probably makes him feel worse). >it's pretty heavily implied that mary wanted that as wellThat may be, but I don't think that being what she wanted had much to do with James killing her, of course he hated seeing her suffer but he also wanted it to end for himself which was why he ultimately did it, it was more a murder than it was a mercy, hence his guilt and desire for punishment. For me In Water will always be the "true" ending, that "one thing left to do" vibe feels the most appropriate

James steps onto the rooftop of Lakeview Hotel. A woman in a floral dress stands by a window with her back toward him. Hearing his approach, she turns and rushes toward him, arms outstretched for an embrace and calls out his name so sweetly.Without hesitation, James pulls out his pistol and fires a single shot right into her forehead.. She collapses, but moments later she pushes herself up, wiping the blood from her face, an eerie grin spreading across her lips."Oh... I guess my little trick didn't work on you." She sneers revealing herself to be Maria.James mockingly smiles back while twirling his pistol." Granted you got her clothes, hair, and amazing rack, but there's no hiding that stench!" He says as he points the pistol back at her."Why do you still reject me? Mary was a devout to the Old Gods. I was born from a wish. Her wish to give back everything that disease took from you. You're not just denying Mary's love, but the love the Gods want to give you. " Maria scorns then her expression quickly changes to sadness " I can be the Mary you always wanted. I won't ever hurt you or make you feel bad."James intensely looks at her and says "I'm not so desperate I'd date a demon. You may have her face, but you will never have her fire. The Sunderland clan exists to purge the world of darkness. I am going to kill you and Silent Hill. If you want to look like Mary I can smother you like her. After I'm done bashing you with this lead pipe you and I are going to have a nice long pillow talk."

If someone like this was in charge of Downpour, it could've changed the trajectory of the entire series.
SH2>SH1>SH3>SH4
horror games for this feel?
>>499244728I'd say SH1=SH3. Both play to their individual strengths perfectly, and both have fairly equivalent weaknesses. All of the first 3 installments are masterpieces, so ranking is hardly needed even if we agree SH2 is the quintessential ideal of a psychological horror game.
>>499207934Pretty sure there are certain enemies that will get back up no matter what, like after progressing a little bit in a puzzle or something.

>>499256629>everything he wasn't involved with got fucked upWhich parts specifically come to mind? I haven't noticed anything glaringly bad besides a few minor complaints like Angela not looking 20 years older than she is, or the nurses not being nearly sexy enough.
The theory that James is stuck in a loop and the remake is just a different loop to the original, and that's why things happen differently or in different places, gets more real the more notes you examine and the more you pay attention to dialogue. The "memories" are called "glimpses of the past" and not just fan service.https://www.gamespot.com/articles/silent-hill-2-remake-answers-a-decades-old-question-which-ending-is-canon/1100-6527114/>All these tidbits and pieces of information suggest that Silent Hill 2 Remake isn't a remake per se; it's another trip through the hellish loop for James, and everyone else. And in fact, every time you play the game is another repetition of that loop.
>>499257020Angela's design was one of them. The nurses actually have nothing to do with that. The whole "sexy nurse" idea is something more from the films, Origins, and Homecoming, the focus of the nurses in SH2 is on their femininity in relation to their bloated heads, per Ito who designed them. The issues are the following>Overall pacing and separation of scenes (small things that build up and change the reading of sections of the game, like having James leave the opening washroom in a cutscene, or not letting the player interact with Angela's staircase)>cutscene framing and style (noticeable in every FMV with the lack of distinct heavy shadows)>voice acting and performances (none of the characters sound like they're supposed to)Among others, but all of these are key issues with the game.
>>499257135>The "memories" are called "glimpses of the past" and not just fan service. They are just fan service since they hold zero relevance beyond getting an achievement.

>>499259114Wrong. Explain, then, things like the original Coin cabinet being destroyed. I'll wait.>>499257969You aren't even meant to "interact with Angela's staircase" in the original. I mean what interaction, even? You get hurt by flames which James can't even see as confirmed by his remark 30 seconds earlier, and justifying it by "James sees it as a magical invisible wall" is lame.Same with how many fags complain about the "I'd never kill myself" line being removed, even though 30 minutes later you can get an ending where James does kill himself (and it seems to be even more likely in the remake, seeing how many people get In Water as their first ending). Not to mention it's likely that James went to Silent Hill to kill himself next to Mary's body in the first place, and this scene takes place after the reveal when he is no longer in denial.
>>499262168>You aren't even meant to "interact with Angela's staircase" in the original. I mean what interaction, even? You get hurt by flames which James can't even see as confirmed by his remark 30 seconds earlier, and justifying it by "James sees it as a magical invisible wall" is lame.Yes, that's a significant interaction that informs the type of character Angela is and how James views her- the flames of her trauma literally prevent him from following her.>Same with how many fags complain about the "I'd never kill myself" line being removed, even though 30 minutes later you can get an ending where James does kill himself He's meant to sound unsure in that, and he doesn't truly understand what he wants or how he feels until after he fights Pyramid Head until PH kills himself (themselves?)- that's the moment where he truly knows what his destination will be.>that picWhite Claudia is a drug. "I can leave by not leaving" is meant to mean he's staying in the past and deluding himself, which is what occurs if James drinks the white claudia for the Bliss ending.
>>499263889Why would James want to follow Angela...? There was never that intent in the game whatsoever. Especially after that scene.

SH3 remake-Heather will wear shorts and long sleeves-she will be a redhead instead of a blonde-Harry Mason will be replaced with James??????her full name will be Alessa Sunderland Mason or ASSMAN for short.
>>499301126>and long sleevesNah she'll be wearing a white tank top over an orange tank top
>>499301447when did the trend of wearing 2 tank tops start in videogames?

Is this the best place to discuss the remake or /v/?
>>499323583If they were human, were the flying enemies people using jetpacks?
>>499323970Bunch of people on /v/ like the remake but there's enough schizos with a hateboner for it that they will drown any thread with shitposting until they move on to the next big thing to hate. So for now, here probably
>>499324752Maybe they were really good climbers with machetes
>>499324752maybe those were just some really big birds
>>499323970>/v/Good discussion in that cesspool is very, very rare. Every SH2R thread I’ve poked my head into has had schizos in them.
>>499324928Are we going to pretend that there isn’t schizos on the other side of the issue that’re saying that the old game is garbage in every way and that Bloober ”fixed” SH2? I get the hate for TORtanicfags that just want everything to be a trashfire but the shilling going on is also unreal.
>>499331865This. The amount of faggots twisting themselves into knots when you point out the objective flaws of the remake and turning around saying the original either wasn’t that good to begin with or was trash is absurd. I haven’t seen a major release that had me convinced there was a shill campaign going on for a long time but this is it.
>>499185745james just got mad because he was unable to cope with their suffering and then he eventually killed mary via suffocation. >he also wanted it to end for himselno he just feels guilty for succumbing to his own madness that made him end mary's life.
So how much did they change Maria in the remake? Does she still interact with Laura like in the teasers?
James is interesting because his actions stem from both selfish resentment and loving mercy and trying to lean too hard in one direction or the other is boring to me

I'm thinking about buying Tormented Souls since it's on sale, how is the game? is it any woke or just normal Survival Horror like we used to have during the glorious PS1/2 days?I skipped Hollowbody because of all the random lesbian plot thing.
>>499365289it's a good game but if you're gonna cry about woke i'm sure something will upset you in ityes you should get it
>>499365289It's a good, fun, old style survival horror with fixed camera angles, tank controls, many puzzles and a dumb story, but you sound like an undesirable person so I hope you don't enjoy it
>>499365352>>499365453I honestly don't mind competent and well written female characters, but I kinda avoid Western games lately, since all the DEI fiasco stuff happening in vidya.I guess I will give it a try, because I love fixed cameras and puzzles. I didn't mind AI: The Somnium Files "diversity" too because it was well written and I love that kind of VN Horror.
don't care NPC
>>499365734please don’t kowtow to them, i promise these aren’t the kind of people you want to be buddy buddy with, your concerns are pretty valid given the state of this shitter industry, i can’t speak to the game you’re asking about but wherever shit like that is found the quality usually reflects it

>>499385446I wouldn't consider this cuck behavior, the situation is fucked but your son now has a sister who has a different dad than him, I wouldn't want to split them up either. They don't have their mom anymore and it seems the least you can do is keep them together.
>>499386194This, its fucked to punish children for the conditions of their birth, leaving someone who cheated on you is justified but splitting up siblings who already have a family in tatters and their mother is dead is just a step too far for me.
>>499386194nice try 1980shadowwolf enjoy raising another man's daughter lmao
>>499386412I thankfully not stupid enough to have sex, let alone get married, but the price of having kids is that your wife and your children can now shame, embarrass, and disappoint you. >>499387002So at no point what is best for the son comes into play? Your just doing the male version of what the woman did, putting yourself first before your children. The son most likely has some sort of bond to his half-sister, even if its that he just wants her around for the sake of having some sort of consistency in his life.

>>499380120Anon, Godzilla has been classified as being horror from the original 1954 film. SH2 Remake is better than whatever Kojima would've shat out with P.T.
>>499427216Hard disagree, Genius Kojumbo’s Silent Hill would’ve been great.I really didn’t like the remake too much but it’s definitely Bloober’s best game, I wonder if that survival horror game they’re working on (Chronos or whatever it’s called) will be better or worse.
>>499427216>the same thing again but worse is better than something fresh and inventive
>>499427216PT was pretty cool as a tech demo and/or a short game I don't think you could squeeze an 8 hour game without it getting boring. I find that horror games that are short and sweet tend to had more impact than the 30th jump scare 4 hours in and you've acclimated to the "horror".
>>499429107>but it’s definitely Bloober’s best gamethat bar was literally laying flat on the ground so not saying much
>>499427216Definitely not. I mean, it’s not really possible for anyone to say now, but P.T. would have had Del Toro’s and Junji Ito’s guidance to curb Kojima’s signature autism that got out of hand if he didn’t have anyone around to tard wrangle him, we have pretty much no clue what the rest of the game would have looked like but I think all things considered it would have at least been a memorable horror experience. Saying SHR2 Remake is better than some hypothetical game that only exists in our minds isn’t saying much.
>>499432860I think a lot of the older games are spooky because of the graphics. That era of gaming (ps1, n64, dreamcast) had a lot of uncanny valley in games for kids as much as they did in games that were intentionally trying to be scary. Not to mention that, in my opinion, as much as people shit on the Boomers, they actually knew how to write stories and media.
>>499416258Ive heard some mixed stuff about SH4, but I hope you enjoy it.Im considering installing Duckstatiom to play SH1, but I'm kinda worrying if its too complicated to set up the whole thing
>>499432860Most short horror games have next to no gameplay and no replay value so I can’t say that I agree.
>>499433848Well that is what made PT cool and unique, there's nothing more unnerving than thinking you know how something will go and it goes completely differently.
>>499433801Duckstation’s super simple to set up. The only normalfag filter would be the bios file but anybody that actually knows how to use the internet won’t have a problem finding a download link.
>>499433989>Slenderman is an OverbloodI feel like I've seen the make-up of the cosmos and found that its held together with God's cum...
>>499433967PT wasn’t good just because it was short, anon. It was good because it was a well paced horror experience, it didn’t wear out it’s welcome. Silent Hill 2 (OG) was also well paced, it had next to no bloat or padding, and that game takes like 8 or 9 hours to beat on a first playthrough. One thing I will say about PT is that while I think it’s scary, I don’t think it’s a very good video game (obviously it’s just a teaser, but lots of people maintain that it’s the greatest horror game ever made when it’s mostly a well executed trial and error walking sim with a few minor puzzles). I also don’t agree with what Kojimbo said in an interview around that time, he had the Amnesia mindset of “giving the player a weapon makes games less scary”. Like sure, making the player feel helpless is a good thing, but if, like 99% of the other horror games that don’t have combat, you just run and hide from everything for the whole game, that’s going to go from heart pounding to tedious real quick. PT didn’t suffer from this because it was only an hour long. There’s no cost to running away and hiding, no tension. PT is very scary on a first playthrough, but I’d say it’s closer to being a “experience” or an interactive movie than a video game. And I know the irony in me saying that, it’s Kojima, but at least his other games had mechanical complexity. Death Stranding had some scary moments and you can defend yourself in it (maybe that shows that he would’ve walked back his “no weapons” take in Silent Hills? who knows).
>>499439114pipo will guide you anon
>>499439798> (maybe that shows that he would’ve walked back his “no weapons” take in Silent Hills? who knows).I seriously hope so. Holy shit. If that quote is real it makes perfect sense that the whole game would have played just like the demo, it would have released probably some time in 2015/2016~ which is definitely around the time every horror game wanted to be a hide and seek simulator and copy Amnesia/Slender. If it released today it would definitely almost definitely not be looked on as favorably as it was back then
>>499441048As much as people are kinda "meh" about Amnesia now, it actually refreshed the Horror genre at the time when every Horror game was becoming "spooky call of duty" or a resident evil clone.
any good itch.io horror game recommendations?
>>499432860>I don't think you could squeeze an 8 hour game without it getting boringThe full game wouldn't have been like the teaser, as Del Taco and Kojima said. The teaser was just a teaser, to evoke some mystery, create buzz, and then drop the huge reveal. Honestly, I think it would've been a shitty SH game in terms of franchise themes and ideas, but it probably would've been a more interesting game than any SH title after 4.
>>499446123Voices of the Void.
>>499441048I’m going to have to apologize for saying that, because I literally can’t find a direct quote of Hideo saying that in any of the interviews.I thought it was in this onehttps://web.archive.org/web/20150322074611/http://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2014/09/26/digital/kojimas-terrifying-world-unknown/#.VZWcQvlVikrbut it wasn’t. It just says>Kojima has made it clear that “P.T.” and “Silent Hills” are not related. “P.T.” is a one-shot that allowed him to try to scare gamers in new ways while utilizing the Fox Engine. The idea to make it playable — “P.T.” stands for “Playable Teaser” — was born out of a desire to deliver the first-ever interactive teaser in lieu of the normal route of releasing a few pictures or videos.>Though he was deliberately vague, he suggested that “Silent Hills” will be enhanced by elements that were not in “P.T.”>“In the trailer for ‘Silent Hills,’ Norman Reedus is the main character, and in ‘The Walking Dead’ he appeared as a strong character. But in horror, if the character is strong, it’s not scary,” Kojima said>“Because the player and the game are synchronized, if a person is easily scared, and the main character is strong like Snake, then the fear factor is lowered.”All he said was that the player isn’t strong, not that they would be defenceless. The only “source” I could find for the no weapons thing was the fucking Silent Hill wiki. Sumimasen, Kojumbo-san…
>>498872513Hi guys, sorry for the long post I am here because I need your advice.I am living a rather stressful period, bad things happened, like really bad.Horror has always been my escapism, and I loved horror videogames back when people knew how to make them.Right now I would love to buy a new game for my xbox x (I don't have a PC, i know). But everything seems bad nowadays, I don't want to buy a remake, I would like to try a new triple A horror game, but the only thing out is Silent Hill 2, I even considered the idea of buying a ps5 for it, but it seems a stupid waste of money, especially considering that many people seems to be disappointed.I was thinking about DAYZ and its new expansion, but honestly the game is no good for my mind. The feeling of emptiness I have when I get all the gear I want is soul crashing.1/2
>>499451041I was thinking about the videogame of "a quiet place", doesn't seems to be bad, from what I saw it is a cheaper alien isolation (with the monsters insta spawning when you fart instead of actually running against you from across the map)...not so sure about it still, did you tried it?I bought Space Marine 2, it wasn't bad, it made me feel something at times, I like the sense of commanderie, but I find the gameplay quite basic, and the plot annoying (Titus being bullied turned me off, it is honestly a trope i detest)I pre ordered STALKER 2, but i need something to keep my mind away till november.Love you
>>499451041>>499452031I’m guessing you’ve already played Resident Evil? If you haven’t, you should.AAA specifically is a tough ask because the only game that comes to mind for me that’s come out recently (that aren’t RE or SH) is Alan Wake 2, and that game has a mixed reception, especially from people who liked the first one.If you don’t mind indie games, Darkwood’s on sale for the xbox right now.
>>499450061Silent Hill went from being the horror game with existential themes, (the closest IP to an Italian Giallo) to generic blackrock goyslop, and I am very frustrated about it.Also, and this is a Japanese problem that may not be because of our retarded western culture. Why does all japanese horror games turn so over the top?Like the atmosphere of the firsts RE, in which the treat felt somehow real got destroyed more and more after each new game. The protagonist went from policemen, believable in their role to dudes punching boulders and doing gun fo.
>>499452635I played the 4th years ago, I would like some new experience. Also this "remake" trend hits me in the balls, because I used to play with my brother and now he is dead and It hits me when I play a game and i am in the exact same place i used to be and now I am old, miserable and worse my brother isn't there.I am getting better, but I need new things. I am resisting the urge to buy the remake of "the thing" which we enjoyed a lot.I honestly hope that the feeling is not gonna hit me with stalker 2.We need new IP guys, i need them a bit more than you but we all do.
>>499453654have you played either of the Evil Within games?
>>499453654I agree, I hate the constant remakes, but sadly they always sell well so there’s no reason to not make them.RE7 is in first person, you might like it. It’s by far the scariest RE, much less action oriented than 4.
>>499453871Too much over the top (i know i am a bitch about games, but i am an old fart and i got picky)
>>499453203>Like the atmosphere of the firsts RE, in which the treat felt somehow real got destroyed more and more after each new game.It shifted with 2 because that's what was best for the series goal- to make a franchise. You try to offer a distinction between the likes of RE5 and Vendetta, when RE2 already was proposing the idea that these viruses are intended to make superhumans, had shit like the secret rape and murder dungeon, and the bottomless underground lab just a bit outside of town.At the same time 2 was being developed (and a short while after it finished), all of these were already in late planning or full development:>an audio drama about Umbrella mowing down entire towns to capture Sherry>a game where you see the mass production of the t-103 from RE2>a game where you actually see the superhuman idea through two antagonists in CVAll of these were in development, and after RE2, Kamiya's idea of a natural continuation was Tony Redgrave (literally designed as 'cooler Leon') raiding Spencer's castle to fight him hand to hand (Spencer is an immortal God on Earth by the way, RE5 fucked this up by making him a feeble old man despite earlier materials already asserting that imposing image of him). This was the natural progression of the series. The "horror atmosphere" of RE could not be carried into a sequel where the mystery was already solved and they wanted to continue that core narrative and style.
>>499452031>I pre ordered STALKER 2 I wish I could be optimistic about this but knowing what we know I really don’t want to take the chance
>>499452031>I bought Space Marine 2, it wasn't bad, it made me feel something at times, I like the sense of commanderie, but I find the gameplay quite basic, and the plot annoying (Titus being bullied turned me off, it is honestly a trope i detest)It sucks because I pre ordered SM2 expecting great things but the gameplay is just so… stagnant and unsatisfying. Not at all like the original where you could keep fighting without issue since your health regenerated with successful attacks, now you feel threatened by every little thing instead of a hulking super human who’s supposed to be mowing down mooks>>499453203>Italian GialloI should really give those movies a try. But yeah, not sure what the hell they were thinking with Short Message.>The protagonist went from policemen, believable in their role to dudes punching boulders and doing gun fo.Like >>499457207 is saying, money talks, each RE games was selling better than the last despite the ramped up action, indicating that that’s what people wanted, and so they delivered. Likewise, when RE6 received backlash, they dialed it back with RE7 after a multiple year hiatus. RE was always a homage to Hollywood action movies, taking inspiration from things like Terminator, it just wasn’t as overt in the first games.
>>499459016Profondo Rosso is the most importan of the genre, the one i recomend. It aged poorly in terms of special effects, also the soundtrack is not very Silent Hill, it is more 70s, but later the genre, and the prog rock group "Goblin" will release music that really gives me some vibes, even if silent hill has more industrial machinery related sounds. >>499467614>not very daring are we, anons?huh? im agreeing with you. their body of work before the remake is… questionable, to say the least, and to be frank this still doesn’t really prove they can make a good game since all they had to do was copy and paste (and *still* fucked some stuff up), im inclined to err on the side of caution concerning any of their future releases
what do you guys think about re0? i just beat re1 cause i like rebecca chambers and wanted to see her in a game but ive heard a lot of bad things about 0. also ive seen talk of it getting a remake as well? idk how good the remakes usually are for these games so im not sure if i should wait for that

>>499475879i played it with a strat guide as a kid and enjoyed itreplayed it as an adult basically blind and i hated it. theres no fucking indication who will ever get captured and that sucks for fights. like one fight the girl got taken out and held by a bigass bug and at the time i only had a shotgun with 10 rounds and a knife on the guy and just didnt want to start from last save

>>499470298Avoid Rebirth like the plague. The Bunker is a solid return to form, definitely worth it
>>499479732Yes, but there actually was some eldritch horror shit going on. I think it was mostly the weird mother pimping her daughter out to people, while the mayor/businessman/hospital director(it's been a long time) chose not to expose it because they could refine the plant into psychedelics the tourists liked. After all is said and done, I would not be surprised if aliens imprisoned a cthlulhu in the lake before humanity was there and its bonds have weakened over a millenia perverting the local flora and infecting the minds of the citizens while trying to get free. I bet if someone dredged that bitch there's be something fucked up down there.I'm sure some lore purist would say I'm fucking retarded, but it feels like that's the most reasonably consistent common denominator across all the games. Alessa/Heather would just be the one that happened to be the most psychically capable medium for the thing. On the writing room floor, it's not that deep. It's a spooky lake town where horror has driven everyone out and then concludes in a classic japense style of fighting a "God". And everything else is window dressing.

>>499470298just got bunker today. idk why but I find the scavenging of resources really cozy. same for in the first game where u could light candles and place them around to regain sanity. it triggers something really fun in my brain that makea me enjoy having to figure out the best places to put candles and light the environment. im hoping u can do something like it in le bunker as AFAIK the monster doesnt like light, so being able to make rooms secure by lighting candles would be really fun and satisfying to me.i dont really get too scared of horror games, to the point where I enjoy them for the survival and scavenging aspect. the monster is just a device to add pressure and purpose to what im doing.
>>499486027From what I recall it didn't have steam achievements until a few years post-release (I don't remember exactly how long for), so it's possible that a lot of those people already completed it and just hadn't replayed it since.

>>499489376It’s about the same as any other modern emulator, there’s no real learning curve, you can use your keyboard or a controller, and you just click on what button you want to map and press the corresponding key/button. Some even have automapping but I’m not sure if Duckstation specifically does, I set my controller up years ago and haven’t had to fiddle with it since.
>>499414693Wasn't that bad. They unlock with the UFO ending so you only have to play like half the game every run.
>>499479732Lol, no, dude. The drug is just a product of the corruption that let Dahlia pump Alessa full of demon juice, which eventually let her open the portal to hell or whatever perma-fucked Silent Hill.>>499484829>On the writing room floor, it's not that deep. It's a spooky lake town where horror has driven everyone outSH1 is a good deal deeper than that. It was a town with roots in outright demon worship, with the realization of their efforts kicking off the horrors.I think a video essay I once watched on the game said it the best. Something to the effect of "most horror games have something really bad happening that you need to stop. In Silent Hill, the bad thing already happened." The game is begging for you to find clues on how it all went down. It's packed to the brim with contextual storytelling, and the few character interactions coupled with plentiful notes actually tell a pretty solid story.

>>499516178>>499529296CV is not in any way planned.Dusk Golem, a notorious liar going all the way back to 2001 when he made some shit up and published an "article" about the development of RE4, said that CV and Zero are getting remakes and CV had been in planning for several years. This is absurdly unlikely because the Capcom 2020 leak had nothing on CV- not even in the schedule which got delayed significantly. This leak also deconfirmed his idea that M-Two, a tiny support studio, was developing RE:4, but people still believe that for some fucking reason. >>499528605I am. The free version is already really good so I'd gladly take more.
>>499534626>>game wraps up the raccoon city sagaIt wasn't a saga. RE1 isn't even in Raccoon City, it's in a forest outside it, and RE2 doesn't focus on the city either.>>takes every mechanic and improves upon itNot really. It staples a bunch of shit on, sure, but what mechanics is it improving? It's not as focused on hoard combat like RE2, it doesn't focus more on puzzles like RE1, it's just new shit.>>literally perfects the formulaNo it does not. RE3, in fact, shits the bed past the halfway point with four increasingly generic in pacing and presentation areas, who are all woefully short and lack in true exploration, where your ending is chosen by a random choice near the end of the game.>>has a boss that's actually challengingThat was all the games.>>amazing areas, incredibly memorable sceneryNot really.Uptown Raccoon tends to blend together, with two areas that loop in on themselves right next to each other, and downtown Raccoon is mostly a straight line with side offshoots. And again, the second half is really short areas that lack in true depth and exploration.>>literally shows the final moments of raccoon cityI don't know why this is considered a winning point when RE3 was the game that establishes its destruction. You can even see side materials from post-RE2 where the town was still around. The nuking was just some shit thrown in last minute to make it seem important.
>>499535775>but you'll constantly hear people say "oh CV was going to be the real 3 but they had a deal with sony to make the third game on a sony system"This isn't true, but it doesn't excuse your own retardation in thinking the RE3 we got was actually supposed to be RE3.Here is your complete development timeline.>During BIO2 developmentCode Veronica, starring Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker, and Chris Redfield is in its concept phase for the next Sega platform.BIO1.9 & Survivor begin to enter production. 1.9 is a title about escaping Raccoon City while rescuing Survivors for points in a 'challenge run' type game, a la Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) to RE2's SMB1. Survivor is a first person gunkom tie in title. On the N64, Biohazard Zero enters production for the 64DD.>Towards the end of RE2's developmentDue to a line rewrite by Kamiya, the lead writer of Code Veronica drops Jill in favor of Claire Redfield.Around this time, BIO3 begins production as a title following on from the 4th Survivor scenario of RE2, focused on HUNK attaining a viral sample on a cruise ship. 1.9 & Survivor are still in production.Zero shifts from the DD to the N64 itself after the commercial failure of the DD.>After RE2 releasesCode Veronica is continuing on as planning.Survivor is continuing on as planned.Ship BIO3 stalls in development, and eventually the decision is made to scrap the game, with the producer, Kamiya, shifting to be director of the new BIO title for the PS2.Mikami, producer of the franchise, decides to keep BIO3 on the PSX and gives the designation to BIO1.9, and extends its development time by a few months. BIO1.9 uses Jill, who is the only protagonist available, to boost its appearance as a 'mainline title', and its original gameplay concepts are primarily pushed to a bonus game.Zero on N64 is stalled and put on hold. That is what happened.

>>499542075The Evil Within 2 was sort of open world and had exploration elements and side missions. Silent Hill 1 was so fucking good bros, i've been around the series my entire life but finally dipped my toes in and good god. I finished my run a couple days ago now but the game has dug deep into me, i listen to the OST and think about the game all day. Forgot what it was like to play a game that compels you so much, it really feels like a masterpiece. Gonna play OG2 and 3 next for sure, how do they stack up to the grungy vibes in 1? Everything in 1 was so rusty and grimy, what a fantastic atmosphere
>>499540339it's pretty short since it was made in 2 weeks for a game jam but it's still good, the control scheme is a throwback to tank controls so that might be difficult to get used to for some folks
>>4995515151’s definitely the rustiest but the original trilogy all have fantastic atmospheres. All of them are pretty grimy, and I’d like to give you the broad strokes of 2 and 3 (imo they’re even better then 1, and I love 1) but I feel like that would take away from the experience. It’s best for you to play them while knowing as little as possible.
>>499551651Sounds nice and short. Will keep my eyes peeled then
>>4995515153 will probably hit closer to 1, in story and vibes2 just says fuck it everyone gets a nightmare world why not let's bring the whole family

Is this SH2 remake the greatest horror game of all time?
>>499547706>Was the first one particularly long?It was one of the most common complaints back when it first released iirc, but I think people have since eased up on it in that regard, I personally think it was exactly what we needed back in 2014, I think it’s even longer than the second game too.
>>499562816I’m honestly getting sick of how every new indie horror that comes out is substantially shorter and more linear then the PS1 games they’re “inspired” by.
>>499562576if you have shit for brains maybe
>>499562576It's a phenomenal remake and it could've been the best of all time but it does more than a few things wrong with some scenes (even though I love them) and the way they use the music in general imo. Also I could've done without the modern "press X three times to operate" mechanics, even though it's not used too much it's still there and things like that don't enhance the gameplay more than they annoy the player.
>>499492583>a good deal deeperIt's really not. The blog posts in youtube format don't make it anymore valid than it is. It's weird how wrapped up in a game some people make their personality. "This game got me through some hard times" is one of the weirdest fucking statements I seem to see in the comments of every one of those video essays explaining the deep philosophical meaning of why a door knob is round. For the record, every horror setting has a bad thing that already happened, a bad thing that is currently happening, and the impending worst thing that can happen. Because that's what a basic compelling story has to have. If everything was hunky dory until the climax, there'd be no reason for anyone to care. I'm just saying people are ascribing too much meaning to a video game and just because they make an 8 hour video about it doesn't automatically give them credibility. IE: Conspiracy mythos. While a fun form of entertainment themselves, they're often just batshit.

>>499572038>press X three timesYeah whats that shit all about? was it in the original game? That should have only been used twice
>>499245229>>game for this feel? The architecture and colour scheme makes me think to an early Tomb Raider for PS1, the game had horror elements that made it spooky. The graphic, being less realistic truly gave you that edge.

Finished my first run of SH2R. Loved the hell out of the game, felt it was an excellent remake that brought an aging classic to modern generation. I do think the womens' faces were a little jank, but that's not too bothersome. I got the In Water ending, basically played like Doomguy killing everything and taking hits. Took me 21 hours, went slow and enjoyed the sights. Now I'm going to start grinding out endings. Found a decent guide that lets you stack endings up to the Lake Hotel, so you can crank them out pretty fast. There's a lot of hate for the remake, and I don't really get it. The issues people have seem pretty picky compared to the improvements, and I hope that Bloober does SH1 and 3 as well. One thing that stuck out to me is that when you fight the final boss (Maria for me), she glitches out and is replaced by a character model that looks a lot like Alyssa from SH3 and the movies. I wonder if Alyssa is actually trying to "become" Maria in order to leave and have some kind of life on the outside? Would be an interesting way to tie in the other games.

>>499606507>It makes a decent new installment actually possible.Being ok with slop will lead to more slop. Do you really think Konami wants to put in more effort than they have to when they know that people are perfectly fine with slop?
>>499609479And gatekeeping for perfection leaves you with a dead series. You want to spend the rest of your life never seeing another SH game? Even if this isn't perfect, a commercial success will show developers that there's an interesting, and more games will get made. They might be more your speed, but they'll never happen if everything is shot down. On another note; the part in the hotel where you leave your items behind. Do you have to take them back? Is it possible to complete the game without your inventory? Past that point there's only a couple of bossfights that you might be able to timeout.
How long until SH2 remake goes on sale? I'm not paying $70 for a video game
>>499611696>You want to spend the rest of your life never seeing another SH game?I’d be fine with that, but I wouldn’t have minded if Bloober made their own entry in the franchise instead of Silent Hill 2 but padded and worse. It was better than their past games and lightyears ahead of fucking Short Message, but that’s not a high bar. Surely you understand that big fans of the old games are going to be upset when the games that they love so much get replaced in the eyes of most people by what these fans see as a caricature that spits on the game’s legacy, right?

How do yall feel about the new endings for Silent Hill 2 Remake?
>>499668992The DLC was so fun and scary. It’s so based how they responded to chud trolls bitching about the game being woke after introducing a black protagonist by making an actual woke SJW nigger character and making him the laughing stock.
I just saw off-site discourse about the SH2 remake for the first time. Man, those remakefags act like our shitposters when someone doesn't give it an outright glowing review.>>499711696SH2 barely even feels like it is in the same series as SH1 and SH3 so I just tend to ignore continuity between them.

>>499738303It's not fantastic, but not bad. A lot of the level design creates frustrating moments where you take the intended path, but monster AI ruins your ability to actually progress effectively and you end up sitting in one place for several minutes while taking one foot of movement at a time.

>>499764307Oddly specific
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwLvcaDMhU8It's crazy because the remake also has Yamaoka using bells and pianos like this all over the place but I thought it was actually detrimental to some of the scenes, for example, when Angela is spilling her guts about her dad, and the worst offender, during the videotape reveal, they play this piano tune that just screams "ARE YOU SAD YET??? HERE'S SOME PIANO!!" at you, it feels so cheap. Like the music itself is not bad at all it's just the way it was used.
>>499781828Agreed, they totally missed out on a lot of the nuance and memorable application that made the soundtrack so good in the first place, it’s not just about having good songs, but also knowing how and when to use them
>>499777946A man has to have dreams and you always have to go fast.
>>499781828The cinematography and way the music is handled makes the remake feel too much like a manipulative drama movie for my tastes. I was particularly bugged by the scene where James has his final conversation with Mary. The simple far away shots from behind James felt much more impactful to me than the close up shots of James and Mary's sad faces with manipulative piano music. It took the scene from a quiet intimate moment that the audience is made to feel like a third party to and made it feel like a Lifetime movie of the week.

>>499867827Not as pathetic as Polish hill 2.Why are all horror franchise villains comically evil? Is it impossible to have a nuanced, not insane villain? Maybe something as human birkin?
Bloober won
>>499880059>Why are all horror franchise villains comically evil?Anon, the majority of horror villains are either literally insane people who kill and harm everyone around them because they are completely incapable of perceiving reality in a coherent manner, the sort of people who would kill millions of innocents because of vague bullshit that only their narcissistic god-complex obsessed asses can understand, or eldritch demons. There is very little room for actual nuance/non-insane behavior amongst them.

>>499880059I mean, they can have nuance and still be insane. John Kramer/Jigsaw probably the biggest example. But horror isn’t really the right medium for “maybe they had a point…” so of course most villains are just pretty unequivocally bad

>>499914909?
>>499915223>isn’t really the right medium for “maybe they had a point…”Y tho? Does horror needs to be campy and cheesy?
>>499903046Yeah cvx has the best story in an RE game and it's probably the longest RE. My main complaint with that game is that it's too long, some enemies are annoying and the island is too big you can easily get stuck on a 1st playthrough if you don't look up certain parts. Not too mention one of the bosses there will make you it's bitch if you don't look for its special ammo.
>>499915223>But horror isn’t really the right medium for “maybe they had a point…”I disagree, I imagine (because I have no source) that some excellent horror can come from someone who sounds reasonable, relatable or something along those lines. Why shouldn't the antagonist have a sound goal in mind for putting our protagonist through unimaginable torture, would it not be right at home in the horror genre where a regular person can't say whether or not he wouldn't do the same in a similar situation? The worst atrocities in real life are all committed by other people, I'm sure the perpetrators had something to say, would that not be right at home in the horror genre?
>>499918997The only reason(s) I'm waiting for a remake.
>>499919327You are saying to take some ideas or inspiration from actual mass murderers or other lunatics and wrap those ideas in a good story up?I don't think this has ever be done. Horror is usually cheap to produce, so it lacks quality.
>>499920614No, it was an example that real horror comes from people, human beings, and an antagonist doesn't necessarily have to be a lunatic
>>499920861Indeed. Lunatics feel forced. The pinguin from batman returns comes to mind.
