Congrats anon! I beat the first game on my 3rd run with a heavy summon-based build and I've been trying to get wins with other playstyles before moving onto 2 but I can't get anything else to work remotely as well. Apparently blaster wizards that just cast big damage spells are the easy mode choice and I've heard no mention of summons being OP, but whenever I start with anything other than Summon Wolves I can't get the run off the ground.

Fire is pretty easy in 1, get flame burst with the melting flame upgrade, then get searing seal. You precast searing seal so that when you cast flame burst in the next level it triggers and you do a ton of fire damage to everything. You need the holy and arcane redeals eventually for fire immune enemies.

Shadowed just got its first patch today. I added the options screen to the title menu, like some people here asked for, as well as a bunch of other minor QOL/bugfixes. I'm probably going to clean up things a bit more and then try to add mouse support next.

The game does look interesting but I have a few problems with it, or, rather, I have some personal problems that make me unwilling to play the game. Number one is the price, right now I'm not really in the mood to spend (almost)14€ on a game, but I'm not saying the game isn't actually worth that or that it isn't a fair price, number two is that it's in EA and I don't buy EA games on principle, for example I waited for Jupiter Hell's full release before buying it, but as in the first post, this isn't a dig at you, I'm not saying it is unreasonable to release a game while it's still in Early Access, I am sure you have good reasons for it. Number three is that I simply have roguelike fatigue and I'm not currently in the mood to play a game where hours of progress are wiped out because I accidentally fat fingered a key, this is further exacerbated by you mentioning in previous thread that you took inspiration from Infra Arcana(unless I'm remembering incorrectly) and as such the game is quite hard, but, once again, this isn't to say that making a hard game was a bad development decision, and I haven't even played the game so I can't really judge the game's difficulty accurately, I'm just going by what you've said and my experience with IA.

Every game where crafting/looting is a central mechanic ends with being crushed under a mountain of garbage items.

But 2 be quite honest crafting is a shallow mechanic and an overfocus on it is just a way to pad out gameplay where nothing else is there. it's why CDDA keeps adding making craft n' loot slower. There's nothing else in the fucking game.

Adding onto the other Anons point about the price. For me, it's $20.50 AUD which is a little bit steep for an early access title. The game does look interesting, but I don't know whether I'll enjoy the strong emphasis on stealth until I actually play it. I've added it to my wishlist, and it's something that I'll keep my eye on as it progresses through early access. But at the moment it looks a bit too experimental for me to justify dropping $20 on an impulse purchase.

The good old folding buggy, the entire reason I was raiding that town with my partner, since I needed the right parts for it.
No one really likes walking on foot to collect vehicles so one of these is great for carrying your survivor and all the general stuff you need to get a vehicle up and running. Once you do that, you can fold it up and toss it in the back.
I suppose you could always try towing them but I found the towing mechanics a bit janky in the past and haven't really bothered since then, other than to clear a path for my actual vehicle.

That's the thing, it's very easy to rush for. One or two libraries should net you the required skills, skulking around corpses for vests or SWAT armour, the hardest component to find early is superalloy but it's manageable. It's something you get week 1, week 2/3 if you are unlucky.
Afterwards you are free to mulch on all but the most dangerous enemies, you are better off skipping directly from your ragtag equipment you scavenged on your first few days to light superalloy survivor. And that hurts because you would be a fool not to do it.

The way it works, as the infection progresses, it keeps making random rolls, and if you hit a very low chance, it goes away on its own. If the progression hits the end, and the infection is still there, you die.
Taking antibiotics stops the progression, and gives you a bonus to your immune system rolls. So, if you got antibiotics in your system, it's not going to get any worse, but you still gotta wait. Might be a few days.

Quickness is your best stat for a ranged build and you want as much as possible. Photosynthetic skin is great for its price at character creation and it gives you as much QN as heightened quickness. When I make a gunslinger I always take both + adrenaline surge (you can activate it before using the bask ability to snapshot a higher level). With tons of QN and the pistol skill tree you dont even need any escape abilities since there'll be nothing left to escape from.

New anti duking mechanics in faction bases are great and stop a lot of common exploits.

The move speed penalty for stamina is totally savage though and seriously weakens the viability of all melee builds. But maybe that's a good thing, there were a lot of OP melee builds going around.

Could someone add flying enemies appearing on the minimap? They have a shadow in tiles but no minimap indicator which makes it easy to accidentally walk too close which is often fatal.

Brazing/welding rods are too long, they can really be all kinds of lengths and there's no real reason you can't snap them in half. They almost always come in a 1kg box or tube.

Persuading NPCs to join you has become too hard.
One part of this is npc quests being harder, not giving us much karma, the difficult of gaining social skill, the severity of having to wait.

It would make more sense if players could just reroll npc requests like sewing, allowing players to push their luck and risk being attacked. There's also a trust mechanic that lets you kidnap npcs, I think it works, so why not add a dialogue option to rob/ kidnap npcs as a default?
You might do that to get npc assistance with a specific task like lifting a heavy frame, hacking a specific computer.

For some reason the rocks feral NPCs throw seem to do too much damage. Especially given their accuracy, and how much damage the feral does with a crowbar for example. It's only there to make them harder to duke with bars or pits.

Labs need more normal items in them. The old ones did, the new ones don't.

In no hope, item (especially vehicle part) damage should be added as a flat rate+margin. This would see hard to destroy parts (notably frames) in far better condition then the flimsy shit on them. They would then look far more like one damaged by players, complex parts like solar panels would be rarer, but vehicles frames and armour would be in far better nick

Anything that weights over 20 kg should stun. That would be furniture. Heavier cut weapons like axes, pickaxes.
Flashlights, weapon lights should blind enemies that have the can see tag. This would give them a lot more cqb value.
Now cable lengths work tazers should work like guns, and on a "hit" plug into the enemy. And the enemy should stay shocked as long as the tazer is within two tiles and powered. It would also meanyou could miss with the tazer, or try to use multiple tazers on the same enemy, which might be a technical take down on things like sludge crawlers.
Anything with a certain length should have reach attack. Things like long wooden poles. Wouldn't really do any damage to enemies but would let you break windows, cameras, curtains etc without getting shot.

Neutral NPCs shouldn't fire through your square, neutral enemies should Logically attempt to STAY neutral, thus avoid throwing grenades next to you, shooting or spearing through your square.

Personally I don't think there should be a distinction between a bandit and an npc. All NPCs should challenge you to disarm, rob or attack you if your rep with them is low enough.
Similarly you should be able to pacify Bandits either through a barter (give me $100 worth of stuff), intimidation. (Having an m249, being a warewolf), or faction rep.
This could see you leading a faction of Bandits who would attack you the second you lost your gun.
[Takes drugs] should probably be a trade tag, someone who didn't use or sell drugs wouldn't buy them either. Why does smokes want a barrel of meth? This would also make drugs a kind of bandit currency, a reason to approach Bandits might simply be to sell your drugs.

NPCs are still selling their primary ammo,mags and weapons. I think this has to do with poor npc weapon selection.

More NPCs should spawn in closed locations, inside labs, inside bank vaults. Wherever those falloutesque last stand corpses are found there should be a roll for a living npc. The silo general who has 25% head HP, the guy who actually got back into his bunker.

Could NPCs go prone if taking fire from an unknown source? Might make it harder to snipe them, but also possible to suppress them.

And your trading with bandits would be limited by how many drugs the bandits could take without becoming feral.

And the traits associated with drugs would make npc followers take them, so if your meth addict follower found drugs on the ground they'd just take them, become useless, possibly attack you. You'd have to try to detox them by locking them in a cabin or something

step one: install a bioreactor implant
step two: equip a jacked force braclet and activate it for permanent forcefield
step three: enjoy immortality. Half the enemies in the game ignore you since they see the forcefield as an impassable obstacle unless they have a ranged attack. If you somehow still manage to run into something scary you can just leave to the world map or use a recoiler since the whole "you cant do that when enemies are nearby" thing does not work when you have a forcefield. You really dont need saves after you learn how the game works since there's like a billion ways to break it.

TL;DR: There's no shortcut for true adventurers!


Based on my experience, the most crucial thing is, indeed, your backpack. Everyone has one (shortly after starting) and uses it extensively. Therefore, let me describe how I set up my backpack. For this example, I'll use the Hiking Backpack. It has many pockets, ample space, and is generally an excellent choice for the classic hunter and gatherer. It's crucial to thoroughly examine every backpack to use it effectively. Since you mentioned you want a guide, let's create one.

"i"nventory > Select Backpack (ideally with a designated hotkey not yet assigned) > "v"iew pockets. The Hiking Backpack has 11 pockets (let's ignore the maximum weight for now).

It has a main pocket with the largest volume of 50L and sufficient item length of up to 60cm. Nice! A medium pocket with 4L and 35cm and two smaller side pockets with 2L each and 25cm.

It also has three specialized pockets: two pockets serving as sheaths for various knives and short blades, each 1L and 70cm, and a pocket for your hydration pack or a bag of appropriate size, 3.01L and 30cm.

Additionally, it features four "Holster Pockets," each capable of holding only one item at a time. Two of them are quite bulky, offering a capacity of up to 5L and accommodating items between 20 and 120cm. However, using these pockets incurs a penalty of 3 on Encumbrance and generates additional noise when moving. There's also a risk of items falling out if attacked. The other two holsters have up to 4L of space and can hold items between 40 and 100cm. They also incur an Encumbrance penalty of 1 and pose a risk of losing contents when attacked.

Now, let's discuss a configuration that makes all pockets do what they are meant for. Keep in mind that once you've mastered the pocket system, you can configure it according to your preferences.

I go to the first pocket, the Main Pocket. Essentially, everything I pick up on the way goes in here. Press Enter to access the pocket's action menu. The hotkeys for each action can also be directly applied to a pocket. The most important is probably the "p"riority. I like to set it with a bit of leeway. High number = high priority. So, let's give it a priority of 10. This alone would be enough for a basic setting where your backpack will absorb everything until this pocket is completely filled, considering its capacities.

The next pocket is smaller. I want this pocket to be filled first due to its lower capacity. So, for "p"riority, I choose 11. This way, your character will first try to fill this pocket. Only when its capacity is maxed out will items move to the Main Pocket. This avoids filling the Main Pocket with lots of small items, preventing it from accepting more significant items later.

The next two pockets are a bit smaller again. I want everything that fits in there to go in first. Hence, I decide on a "p"riority of 12. This means we fill everything in these side pockets first. What doesn't fit may go into the larger Side Pocket, and only then will we fill the Main Pocket.

Let's move on to the specialized pockets. The "Sheath pockets," pockets 5 and 6, are meant for knives and smaller swords. Regardless of their priority, they only accept knives and swords. Therefore, I set the "p"riority of these pockets to 20. So, whenever we find suitable blades, they should go into these pockets first. Multiple knives can fit into one pocket. Also, the time it takes to store and draw items here is crucial. 40 turns are quite handy and help when quickly reaching for our Bayonet or Combat knife. Additionally, our Machete fits here too, allowing us to give the undead a new haircut.

The seventh pocket is for bags the size of a hydration pack. Ideally, you'd put a hydration pack in there, but you could also insert a large zipper bag. Be cautious, though, that if you fill the zipper bag completely with water, it becomes larger than the maximum volume of the pocket and will be transferred to the other pockets. So, it's advisable to actually insert a hydration pack. Suppose you have one within reach. In that case, let's explore another pocket action: Black and Whitelist. You can create a Black and Whitelist for each pocket—either the specific "i"tem that should (not) go in or a whole "c"ategory. You can set whether you want to modify the "w"hitelist accordingly or the "b"lacklist (you can see above the pockets if you are configuring the white or blacklist). Assuming we are configuring the "w"hitelist, we select the "i"tem Hydration Pack from the list. Now, exclusively only this item can be inserted into this pocket. The same goes for entire "c"ategories. And likewise, the "b"lacklist functions in reverse.. Additionally, we can set the "p"riority to 25, as we want to make sure our hydration pack, if we ever take it off or want to insert another one, goes into this pocket.

Pockets 8 and 9 are the bulky and noisy "Holster Pockets." Generally, I don't want items stored there. Therefore, I "d"isable the auto-pickup feature for these pockets. This prevents items from being stored there when picked up. Please note that you can still store items there. Use "i"nventory > Your Backpack > and then the "i"nsert function when standing on or next to the item of your choice. This way, you can decide whether to store long tools or weapons in your backpack, ignoring this feature. 150 turns to draw or sheath from this pocket is advisable, for example, if you want to keep your Warhammer (120 cm) there, as you would draw it anyway before a fight. In this case, I would set that "i"tem on my "w"hitelist and give the pocket a "p"riority of 25.

The last two pockets also belong to the bulky "Holster Pockets." However, with less Encumbrance and no additional noise. I would also "d"isable the auto-pickup but give them a higher "p"riority than the preceding ones. This way, your character will try to fill these first when using "i"nsert, for example.

If you've set a hotkey for unloading containers (I think it's not preset, but Ctrl+u is a good choice), you can toggle the auto "u"nload feature on and off for each pocket. This might prevent items from being unloaded from a selected pocket. However, since I use the Favorite function "*" excessively for this and other conveniences, I don't use this feature. So, if you favor all items that should stay with you, you can simply use "," during a "d"rop to drop everything except your favorites. Unloading loot was never so easy and satisfying ;)

You can "S"ave, "A"pply, or "D"elete presets for each pocket to quickly set up your Whitelists or configs on other backpacks, for example. However, since, as you may have noticed, I am a big fan of adjusting my pockets, I don't use this feature.

If you have another pocket inside one of your backpack's pockets, you can also configure it here.

Please consider the maximum weight limit and all limits for all pockets. If exceeded, you risk losing items. For example, if you have a spear strap in your backpack, it could take a suitable weapon, exceed the limit of your backpack, and have both the strap and the spear end up on the ground.

If you want to configure all pockets at the same time, use "i"nventory > "i" and go for it.

If you made it this far, you are now capable of configuring all your wonderful pockets according to your wishes. I find, it significantly adds to my immersion when I know how my backpack/pockets are packed. I think every hiker among us knows how essential pack order is when going on a trip into the wilderness.

If you want melee to be viable you need to build the game around melee first.
Making ammunition cheap or free is a basic problem.
Making ranged attacks just melee attacks but from 10 tiles away will often just make melee pointless.

I’m tryna do my first ascension on nethack and keep running into issues. amulets are almost impossible to identify. potions seem easiest to identify by just quaffing them after dipping in a unicorn horn. rings face a similar problem to amulets but lesser. Scrolls same thing and for all of them I just try to stack scrolls of identify with a magic marker. furthest I’ve gotten was ghennom but only because I got lucky and got a wishing wand. How do I get gud at this game? I really want to get further

Noted. After thinking about it I realized that burgeoning is the perfect skill for a coward build since a coward build is probably the only thing that can keep you from accidentally killing yourself and make it viable long term. So far I'm leaning towards phasing and burgeoning and maybe force wall and corrosive gas as backup. Force wall plays well with gas and burgeoning since you can also use it to trap enemies in them.

That being said, I kind of want to make a farmer build now:

I know no one plays DCSS anymore, but the new Dithmenos is super good for summoners. 20% chance to get an extra summon every time you do anything (with reaching because you have a polearm) and if it procs on a summoning spell it's a 50% chance to summon another thing that has constriction. Worst part is that you don't need to visit him after finishing the quest. I found it weird since he is the one that gave you the quest and the followups, was expecting it to be early access curse of unfinished content and that he will say nothing to finally finishing everything. Was not expecting his sprite to change or for him to instantly attack.
Fucking hell, it made me care and still does hours after finishing the game. It wasn't out of the blue either, he did say that the curse made them all more aggressive and smarter, him being really smart and peaceful a unique situation. Probably for the best, the current endgame is entering a wizard tower and beating it, while the full game plans to have eight of those. Yeah. Game is good but it needs more of everything to really suck you in.

The bitrate on the vid is pretty low but this is where I'm at with the gold pile thing.
The gold pieces fall in sort of slow motion and after a few seconds they lock their position so the don't slide around.
