I'm DONE with your GAMES, valve. You put me in herald after over 5 thousand hours of playtime, how fucking dare you. I'll let you know that I was almost 4k in the old rating, and now you put me in fucking herald? I'm playing my ass off every single game, my game is insanely advanced compared to the shitters I play with. Your calbration system is fucking retarded and I'm not going to just sit here and take you putting me with the worst shitters in this game. Over 2 thousand fucking matches and herald? You make me sick.

In case someone's wondering, Deadlock is very consistently losing players and if this keeps up will be completely empty in two or three months, maybe sooner if cumulative effects start kicking in. Then Dota will only have to survive the initial launch spurt, but with a 3k average concurrent player count this will probably not go well.

>a guy who really liked Deadlock but abandoned it after seeing the way Valve treated TI and Dota, and also finding out how tiny Valve actually is from the employee number leaks
>>
I don't remember asking.
>>
>>499641380
It's clear by now that Valve is a tiny and destructively mercurial company. People both here and on reddit identified Deadlock as the cause of Valve's treatment of Dota. This means the collapse of its player count is a crucial thing for Dota and is therefore on topic for this thread.

The enemy team has a Morphling with a Manta Style. Two Morphlings are approaching you.
What is the chance that one of these two approaching Morphlings is not an illusion?

Then they would have no trouble maintaining the battle pass and TI's grandiose stature. They had all of the prerequisites for this - both TI viewership and prize pool kept increasing every year. Without being intentionally destroyed by Valve, TIs of 2022 and 2023 would have a similar prize pools to TI of 2021 and maybe slightly smaller viewerships (due to not being in Europe). TI of 2024 would once again set an absolute record in viewership and if Valve so desired would also have something like a 60-70 million prize pool. It would be talked about as the absolute pinnacle of esports everywhere and both Valve and Dota's prestige would rise.

Instead, they said they don't have enough resources to both keep the battle pass and create events, and we now see how that went (no working servers and enormously delayed crownfall).

I don't know, I'm not a Valve employee. However even if we assume it's true, Valve could have developed some sort of targeted retaliation mechanism (such as publicly revealing their demands and presenting them as "entitled millionaires" to the community), instead of destroying the event.

Valve could literally write themselves into gaming oreeven sports history by keeping up the expansion of TI and its production value.
>>
>>499645178
That's part of the reason
>>

>>
>>499644351
No. This situation is slightly different to the monty hall problem
>>
>>499647694
I'm not an OG fan, but I will note that Wisp was available for all teams to pick. One of the reasons it's mentioned so often is due to juts how unorthodox this is for a hard carry.
>>
>>499643601
alright thanks, I don't know how to itemise.
>mostly magic
I needed armour that game did you watch it or are you just looking at the end screen?
>>
>>499648245
oh and I don't know what positions "tanky" heroes can be played sup. I felt we needed something like bristle so that is why I played him.
>>
>>499647694
Because what matters is OG were the team to recognize just how powerful it was. It doesn't matter if a hero is overtuned if no one realises and actually figures out how to use it to its potential.
>>
>>499648043
>>499648512
Yeah I fucking know, I'm talking about people who think it's paramount to rushing desolator on CM.
>>
>>499648245
Just looking at the end screen, Tiny was the only one that deals significant physical damage and he starts off dealing mostly magic damage and even by the end with a full phys build he did roughly 60/40 phys/magic, an early pipe on anyone on your team would've been huge and you had like 4 natural pipe carriers and no one bought it
>>
>>499648419
You needed disables, not a single stun on your team and barely anything else cc wise
Something like shaker or tusk would've made more sense
>>
>>499648978
I'll do tusk then, what other CC durable supports do you recomend?

supports definitely didnt get this much gold before

pre rtz economy
>everyone is pretty poor but carries less so because they would kill jungle camps every now and then, and then go right back to brooling or taking objectives
post rtz economy
>after rtz figured out you can just kinda keep killing jungle camps forever, carries become gigafed every game
>mid becomes a carry role to take more advantage out of the broken jungle gold
>games become based around controlling the jungles, throttling the enemy's gold gain and then eventually pushing hg with gold advantage once the difference is big enough

after that it has been a series of jungle nerfs and kill/assist/comeback gold buffs to bring supports and carries closer to one another. 7.33 made things even more retarded since jungle is no longer a controllable objective and carries can just farm wherever

>>
>>499651536
You left out a huge change which is salve, clarity and mangoes are now limited so a support doesn't spam them on CD for the core as used to be the case, you rarely see a support buy a salve or clarity for a core now you actually now see cores buy it for themselves

Dota but all females are anthro

The problem was their play style being centred around map control and winning the game early which became much harder after the map change in 7.33 which is why they started to lose after the update

Like getting aghs on dark willow
>>
>>499653223
You can look at their Riyadh 2024 run. They defeated Falcons there and 5-0 Liquid.
>>
>>499652265
thats a fairly recent change and didn't really do that much, aside from bandaid fixing the bigger issue which is personal couriers and mangos. pros were about to discover the game just completely breaks if you just spam ferry mangos on a support hero with a good spammable nuke. it still does, but you run into the stock limit thing. but for the most part, supporting STILL comes down to "buy more regen than the enemy support and spam more spells".

supports unironically used to be richer in the laning phase because they didn't have access to mangos or even the team courier that often, so they'd end up making more strategic purchases with their gold like boots and shit. but now all you really should buy are mangos and salves until you win the lane
>>
>>499653558
Yeah they start in the upper bracket and face one of the two easiest teams essentially getting a free pass, they beat Falcons who have only won one tier 1 tournament and beat Liquid who at that stage had always lost to GG
>>
>>499653912
Falcons won 4 tier 1 events by then and had a second place finish on top of that.

>>
>>499665123
Dota has heroes which allow you to have an especially noticeable impact on the game, but they require strong commitment due to complexity.

Typical examples are Arc Warden and Meepo mids. They both allow you to control several units at the same time, but in very different ways: one creates a perfect clone and the other several imperfect clones.

"When we recognized this, we made a deliberate choice earlier this year to run an experiment: to take some of the resources that would normally produce Battle Pass content and instead put them towards more speculative updates, including features and content that couldn't fit into a Battle Pass. While work is still in progress on future updates, the first of these has shipped: New Frontiers and patch 7.33 couldn't have shipped as they did if we were focusing all our efforts on producing Battle Pass content."

For this reason you should probably learn russian before starting Dota 2 because you will be mass false reported by other players for not speaking russian and will be penalized because Dota 2 punishments are based on the amount of reports not on if it was true or not so be careful not to upset your teammates or enemies or else your honor level will go down and you will get a temporary ban and locked out of chatting until you get your honor level back up.

Ti of 2022 only had a lower prize pool due to Valve starting the process of killing TI by splitting the battle pass into two parts. It was also visible in venue selection (it was known as "mall TI" in the Dota community), terrible production issues and no true sight. This is all too much to be a coincidence.

Valve knew that this TI was universally considered as a failed one, and it's 95% guaranteed that they introduced the swag bag to make the killing of TI more palatable to the community.

You don't sound like a Dota player at all, considering you're not even aware of the issue here. The point isn't being unable to find a game, the point is the search getting stuck on "confirming match" and artificially extending the queue time 3-10x.

>so the event was extended, not delayed

No, it was DELAYED. Valve described its motivation on killing the battle pass as focusing on M O R E updates and game events. Old acts of crownfall being extended again and and again and again and again means NEW events DON'T HAPPEN.

As for the rest - there's absolutely no explanation for the intentional killing of TI. It's possible to fund it both with and without a battle pass format, for example by making small contributions from all skin sales throughout the season. Destroying the event is an absolutely deliberate move by Valve.

> It's possible to fund it both with and without a battle pass format, for example by making small contributions from all skin sales throughout the season
they had a compendium available to fund ti2024 prizepool, if you felt compelled to contribute
>>
>>499670209
>>499670065
>>
>>499670339
A battle pass is like purchasing a treasure chest. 2023 and 2024 compendiums are like purchasing a plastic bag with cigarette butts, used gum and candy wrappers.

If someone reacts to this in a neutral way, he would be among the people with the most positive reception, since most thought it was outrageous or downright insulting.
>>
>>499670815
the battlepass format was extremely poor for the consumer
hiding content behind a paywall, forcing you to spend money on things you didnt want
prestige fomo bullshit be damned
>>
>>499671169
Irrelevant. If Valve doesn't like the battle pass they could fund TI in exactly the same way they operate now, but they decided to kill it off and this almost surely started in 2022. Again:

>They had all of the prerequisites for this - both TI viewership and prize pool kept increasing every year. Without being intentionally destroyed by Valve, TIs of 2022 and 2023 would have a similar prize pools to TI of 2021 and maybe slightly smaller viewerships (due to not being in Europe). TI of 2024 would once again set an absolute record in viewership and if Valve so desired would also have something like a 60-70 million prize pool. It would be talked about as the absolute pinnacle of esports everywhere and both Valve and Dota's prestige would rise.
>>
>>499671626
you might not care, but it does matter since hats are what made the battle pass desirable
expecting whales to over contribute to the prizepool year after year to see number get big isnt a great way to sustain the game
why should i be expected to spend $500+ dollars on hats for ti every year

what do we think of the new ESL announcement? kino or cinema?
>>
>>499672139
I'm not talking about the battle pass anymore. Valve can set the prize pool at any level it wants by tweaking percentages of skin sales throughout the season.

The future I described isn't just possible, it's EASILY possible, but Valve simply refuses to act to make it happen. Valve can write its name into gaming and even overall sports history through ever growing TI prize pools and ever expanding production value (ceremonies, more main stage games, having a special extra large stadium for finals, having subsidized tickets to help more people attend, true sight, etc) but they DON'T ACT.

First of all, look at the bump Dota had at the beginning of crownfall before Valve started its delays. Second, an event like a video game having its 60 million prize pool finals on a 50k large stadium would make the news everywhere. Third, this is large enough for Valve to increase its fame and clout even more than it already has.

But what Valve achieved instead is Dota players starting to wish death on all of Valve's new games and killing Dota's most important event.

The prize pool is merely one of the components of the experience and it wasn't the only thing Valve destroyed.

In case you didn't know this, Valve attracted Dota 1 players to Dota 2 specifically by advertising it through TI 2011. Perhaps association with Valve will turn out to be fatal for Dota after all, seeing as how they treat the game during the last months (which is very likely connected to Deadlock).

The point of people going on walks isn't purely recreational, work related or a form of exercise. It can be all of the above, sometimes even at the same time.

TI too was a carnival, a source of Dota's prestige and an ad at the same time. We don't know what will happen now that it's been destroyed, but it's quite likely that the viewership will keep decreasing as more and more people realize what Valve has done.

I myself only realized that at the very end of TI 2024 and almost immediately dropped everything Deadlock related. I literally expected act 4 to release between TI"s group stage and playoffs and fund it for at least a couple of days. And I also remind you what crownfall was SUPPOSED to look like

DotA Allstars was like chess. You could learn literally everything, and all the mechanics had an underlying sense to them (eg, orb effects, slows based on same WC3 skill not stacking, etc), and it created very deep gameplay. Dota 2 is much broader but in reality it's such a nightmare to balance and everything is so arbitrary and randomly changed that there's no sense of cohesion to it.

It was easy because there was big red text on every orb effect item and ability. It was also part of balance. Viper, for example, was very strong in the early days of DotA and giving him access to shit like Skadi and Desolator would have been very powerful.

Ironically Edgar Allen poe made the same criticism against chess you make against Dota 2. In the book Murder in the Rue Morgue he argues that checkers is a better game than chess because it's actually possible to learn every single line, so it becomes a measure of skill rather than a knowledge check like chess.

>>499713505
Chess only has 6 different pieces, all of which only have one move with the exception of en passant and castling. Dota has 129 heroes, all of which have 4 abilities, 10 talents, multiple facets, an innate, varying stats and stat growth, aghanim's scepter and shard abilities, and and almost infinite list of possibilities when it comes to items.
>>
>>499714058

That makes no sense since knowing every board state and possible move is also another knowledge check.
>>
>>499714491
Soon (2025)
>>
>>499714981
The point is it's possible to know it all, so there's the implicit assumption two "pro" plays already know everything when they play a game. At the point it's no longer a knowledge check. Thats the argument being made.

In contrast in chess, unless you are playing a common line known to both players, theres a good chance one player takes an obscure line they've studied and win off their opponent's lack of knowledge.
>>
>>499715890
beta argument
>>
*shoots you in the head*
tough luck kid, with a bit more knowledge youd have been able to calculate the dodge
>>
>>499716143
Poe is basically saying if you don't know every line in checkers, you're a retard, while you can't know every line in chess so it's just a game of who does more autistic studying. He's calling you a betafag for relying on obscure lines to get wins.
>>
>>499716810
t. probably got huskar'd mid
>>
>>499715890
>it doesn't count for checkers because pros on both sides know all the moves
That's not how it works. You are describing two people with perfect knowledge playing a mathematically solved game as "not a knowledge check" and then in the same breath complain that in chess you can be outskilled because somebody had a pocket strat that the other guy didn't.

They're both knowledge checks. The nature and context might differ but they're still just knowledge checks. Poe's just being a sour grapes fag who seethes because he can't win at chess. Like a r*ddit support main that can't win mid lane saying dumb shit like "2k MMR support is better than 5k MMR mid because I'm not an autistic right-click mainer" or some shit like that. It's projection.
>>
>>499715890
>>499717376
The logical corollary of this argument is that the best game is coin flipping, because there are only two possible outcomes from a game comprised entirely of a single move and for which no amount of knowledge can be of benefit.
>>
>>499717479
>The logical corollary of this argument is that the best game is coin flipping
No it isn't, since coin flipping is entirely chance. The actual logical corollary to his argument is that the best game is tic tac toe.
>>
>>499713641
what a slut
>>
>>499717479
It's the other way around. Coin flipping (or any chance based game) lets you cope when you lose by saying shit like "I wasn't outskilled, I just had bad luck". When you get outskilled because of a strat you didn't know about, you seethe and rage and hate yourself and mayeb the game. Because you're objectively inferior. Poe, as described, is channeling DSP going "woooooooow how was I supposed to know that?" and then getting mad when told to git gud or study more chess books. So according to his argument, the best games are mathematically solved games where you can figure out, or memorise, the optimal sequence of moves so you win no matter what. Like checkers, or I dunno, tic-tac-toe, othello, etc. where you can pretend memorising all possible board states is skill (and not a knowledge check) as long as it's not as complex as chess.
>>
>>499717376
>That's not how it works. You are describing two people with perfect knowledge playing a mathematically solved game as "not a knowledge check" and then in the same breath complain that in chess you can be outskilled because somebody had a pocket strat that the other guy didn't.
The entire point of the argument is that in checkers its actually possible to have perfect knowledge, while chess is too "big". It is "how it works". Simply put, he's saying games based on two players having perfect knowledge are better than those where it isn't possible. I don't personally agree with his argument but whatever, that's his argument.

However you're just arguing semantics about the definition of "knowledge check". Thats not an actual counter argument against Poe's sentiment.

>>
hmm it seems the enemy team has used every ability in their arsenal on our support
perhaps we should run away and allow their cooldowns to come back up before we fight properly
>>
>>499719424
The line he's drawing is very clear. He says that any game that measures who is better based on knowing more about the game and calculating the best line is inferior to games where both players know the game completely and instead have to rely on analyzing their opponents. When a game is played where everyone knows the game 100% (checkers, professional poker, etc), the game play stops being knowledge checks and instead about analyzing your opponent, arguing semantics about what a "knowledge check" is, is fundamentally misunderstanding his argument.
> To be less abstract —Let us suppose a game of draughts where the pieces are reduced to four kings, and where, of course, no oversight is to be expected. It is obvious that here the victory can be decided (the players being at all equal) only by some recherche movement, the result of some strong exertion of the intellect. Deprived of ordinary resources, the analyst throws himself into the spirit of his opponent, identifies himself therewith, and not unfrequently sees thus, at a glance, the sole methods (sometimes indeed absurdly simple ones) by which he may seduce into error or hurry into miscalculation.
>Whist has long been noted for its influence upon what is termed the calculating power; and men of the highest order of intellect have been known to take an apparently unaccountable delight in it, while eschewing chess as frivolous.
You're just not a man of the highest order of intellect.

When pro teams pick their heroes in a tournament, are players locked into heroes (like when you pick a hero in a pub) or is each team picking 5 heroes and then theoretically have the option to decide who plays which hero after all heroes have been picked?

The latter. If you watch a pro game, you can see them slowly assign themselves to heroes after picking is finished.

Valve is tiny (based on the employee number leaks), destructively mercurial (the whole TI situation, killing Dota by literally denying it working servers for weeks) and absolutely inept at reading the room (Artifact, Underlords, focusing on balance changes for Deadlock instead of matchmaking and hero models, killing TI and zeroing out the goodwill from patches and Crownfall by doing so).

It seems like being tiny and never communicating/lying during communication is their baseline modus operandi. There will always be a danger to Dota until they fundamentally change their approach.

Multiplayer games played for fun and entertainment died with the advent of Streaming and general Ebeggar culture. Its not exclusive to Dota.
Zoomers and NEET milenials started thinking that 500 more mmr, one more medal,1 more division, 1 more clip, will give them better odds at getting some spotlight time; as such multiplayer games stopped being about enjoying the gameplay or enjoying the mechanics and systems or even enjoying getting better at the game. Its about getting attention which you hope you can monetize.
Issue is, overwhelming majority of players are also skill-less hacks, as such they look for shortcuts
> cheating
> win trading
> smurfing
etc.

True moba shooter is just a bad idea. It doesn't match. Having to aim while also doing all the macro shit is too much.
>But smite!
Smite is league but auto attacks are also skillshots. It's not a true shooter.

Market is also fucking saturated beyond belief. Valve and all other devs need to invest into parts of the gaming market that doesn't have so many competitors. Valve is even retarded enough to compete with THREE of their own games (dota as moba, cs2 as comp shooter, tf2 as hero/class shooter).

Both Storm and Void spirits are more intuitive, if you want a high mobility mid.

Memewatch is a good example of exactly why mixing a shooter with MOBA elements is a terrible idea. Because either the primary skill element, aim, dominates the game like it does in Memewatch with snipers dominating the game 24/7 unless Blizzard fucks something up while overcorrecting, or aim is secondary to other mechanics so then the call of doody kiddies refuse to play it because it's anti-skill or whatever other whiny complaint they'd like to make. To be fair, they're not wrong about that when it comes to Valorant and its twinkling star shit, among other things. But you get the idea. They're conflicting avenues of "fun" or "skill expression", and both camps can't be happy, especially in a competitive ranked environment where teammate competence also matters.

I didn't play Deadlock but I'm not holding my breath for it to turn out any better. After Memewatch, I gave up wanting to play any pvp shooter game forever. I'm not an 18 year old Korean who's had 5 years internet cafe experience, so trying to put up with the stresses of playing any competitive shooter is just asking to be miserable. There are better games to play that don't require irl stat checks like reflexes+perfect mouse aim precision while spending 90% of the game behind a corner because you can't pop a smoke yet. Or constantly having to aim for 20+ mins or however long a Deadlock game is before just getting tired of it. When you queue up auto-attack commands when doing shit, you get to take mental breaks even if you're still glued to the screen, but that's not happening with a shooter.

I get why Valve and Icefrog have this intense urge to make a game that combines the two genres, but it's a doomed concept. The worst part is that I can see them getting their feelings hurt and resenting gamers for a few years like when they made Artifact. Sucks.
>>
>>499805475
Overwatch is like team fortress then. Not a moba.
You don't get levels or items.
>>
>>499805475

>>
>>499806374
once the event was extended those dates were no longer relevant
there is a difference
>>
>>499805475
unironically the best parts about deadlock have very little to do with the combining of the moba and shooter genre. i'd be willing to bet that most people playing deadlock would've dropped the SHIT outta it a long time ago if the game didn't have such fun movement mechanics and interesting concepts like an actual honest to good meele system that isn't just "mash button to finish the enemy off"
>>
>>499805863
>NOW ENTERING: CIRCUIT ROYALE
it's just dogshit in ow2 because you now have no real ability to engage her in sniper maps since dps can't really dive on their own and the tank trying to take her off is literally feeding since there's only one. this didn't really happen in ow1.
classic blizz balance

>>499807004
so you admit that the acts were delayed then? the event being extended should hold no power over when the acts themselves would be released if this wasn't the case, chomo.
>>
>>499805695
I did say "mixed with MOBA elements" since it's hard to argue it's a full MOBA. Because Blizzard is the master of diluting concepts and implementing them half-assedly in an attempt to pander to everyone but still everyone equally instead. Or TF2 is closer to a MOBA than you'd care to admit.
If Memewatch is this bad with only a couple mechanics mixed in, imagine how much worse it'd get when you go all-in.
There was also Battleborn but I can't comment on how good/bad it was since I never touched it.

>>499805863
Sojourn has dominated the game's meta since OW2 release. Every time Sojourn drops out of the meta, Blizzard buffs her for like three patches straight. Widowmaker is old news but also, she's actually still decently relevant. Literally powercrept by Sojourn, so you don't see her much. Blizzard's great solution to addressing all "widowmaker op pls nerf" complaints that have been out for years: release an even stronger sniper. Blizzard goes out of their way to suck sniper cocks. They nerf everybody and everything else to pretend they care about balance but they always refuse to touch the snipers unless it's by accident.

An analogy would be like if in this last patch, Valve refused to nerf Bracers so instead of doing the right thing and nerfing Bracers, they go out of their way to nerf STR gains and stats on every hero and item except Bracers. And that just creates 50 new problems and everybody's still buying 3-4 Bracers on every hero. And if illusion heroes like SD get meta because they can fight with fat 4k HP illusions, the illusion heroes will get hit with the nerf stick next patch while Bracers stay untouched. That's how it's like with Blizzard balance and snipers.
>>
>>499807480
>so you admit that the acts were delayed then?
not at all
the event being extended does hold power since the schedule changed

isn't dota one of the brownest games there is? dota really started gettign popular in the mid 2000s and wc3 came out in 2001. by the mid 2000s there were better games to play, not to mention ps3/xb360 were a thing.

I really like Venge's Arcana but $54AUD is just an insane price to pay for a cosmetic item in any video game. I play a lot of gacha games and you can almost always get the best shit free if you do your daily quests and are thoughtful with resource expenditure. Even with casual monthly pass purchases in some of those games I haven't spend $54 in total across all gacha games. Insane amount of money for a single hero outfit.

They are entitled retards that think they deserve to get one before someone else, or a player is being a retard and picked up a dropped token they can't use and refuses to send it to the team stash

If someone doesn't take a neutral item or upgrade to a higher tier they are griefing themselves and the team

Obviously
Mid players are giga-sweats who receive sexual pleasure from out playing their opponent in lane and dominating them in the CS, rune, and poke mini-games. You're a core but you have no support to babysit you. You're in the most isolated but also most open lane. You're expected to take your natural xp advantage and carry the midgame with it till pos 1 can take over. And you're like the only core who needs an equal amount of game sense as the supports.

For everyone who didn't read the thread - there appears to be an outsider/outsiders trying to defend Valve itt. They didn't know crucial Dota information and didn't even know where to look for Dota VODs.

I don't think Valve uses paid posters (like I believe Riot does), but it could be a spouse or a relative of a Valve employee.

I never said that once in my life. I'm the guy saying TI has been intentionally killed by Valve and that Deadlock failing is very important for Dota.

I fully dropped Deadlock myself for Dota's sake and there's ~0 chance I'll ever return to it no matter what Valve does from how on.

Never happened once. Again:

1 My opinion is the default one in the community
>>499695817

2 TI 2024 has lost half of its viewership compared to TI 2021 (the only one it can be compared to) and it's near guaranteed to get worse if Valve doesn't change its policies

3 The destruction of TI by Valve began all the way in 2022 by splitting the battle pass in two and likely internationally making the event have terrible technical issues + poor production.

it wasnt half, it was less than half but you must exaggerate to obscure your argument
the playerbase was smaller in sept 2021 than it was in sept 2024
we didnt see a surge in players as one would expect with the biggest ti just weeks away
