I suppose I might as well link Steam too, because there's always something on sale there, but Steam doesn't start its Halloween sale until Monday.

I had a tradition of playing a bit of Costume Quest every October, but I finished the main game last year and I'm not really loving the "Grubbins on Ice" expansion. It's okay, I guess, but the Halloween aesthetic isn't really there.

Also, I don't know what's up with the frame rate. MangoHud reports 30 FPS and frame timing feels like shit after it loads a new area, but then it goes back to a mostly smooth 60 FPS if I pause and unpause the game. Very strange.

So I've beat Nier Automata on my Steam Deck.
Honestly, it wasn't good: combat for 2B is just 2 button spamming, for 9S is a never ending hacking game. Story felt like it was written by a complete hack, visual style of this game is mostly in gray colors, soundtrack is somewhat decent. 5/10

What do you mean by accurate? if you mean issue with colors then its a chroma subsampling issue. You need to specify yuv444 chroma subsampling and full color range, although a lot of tools dont give you an option for that so the best option is to just save the image in png format which is lossless.

guys how can i change the language from the linux version of gog installer? for windows version, it's the typical rectangle shaped interface and you get to choose language, if creating shortcut, etc.
but for native linux games you cant?

I'm looking through my GOG library (in a web browser) now, and most of them say "Language: English" with no way to change it. I did find one with multiple languages, but each language selection has its own offline installer.
If you want a different language, and the game doesn't come with multiple languages that can be selected at the in-game menu, then you might need to find the installer for that specific language. When there are multiple separate versions of a game, it looks like GOG splits them up into multiple offline installers rather than providing one installer that asks which language to install. At least, that's the case here. This game is only for Windows, by the way, so it's not a Windows-versus-Linux thing unless there are some games for which only one language's version was ported.

gog games usually have a drop down menu during installation that lets you choose language. you have to go into settings before you click install, in the same screen there also lets you choose the directory and if you want to create a shortcut or not.
i've seen only one game where the language was a different online installer.
i dont know why the native linux version doesnt have this choice.

I'm confused with how adaptive sync works on Wayland Plasma. It just doesn't seem to pick up some games and makes them flicker like crazy. Turning on the frame counter on my monitor shows the refresh rate changing non-stop. Workaround I found is to open the application settings and force adaptive sync to off but surely there has to be a better way to handle this?
>>
>>500118260
If you turn it on it should work only on Fullscreen applications.
When turned to always it should work with any application.
If you're on AMD setting "3D Fullscreen" power profile should also help.

>So I've beat Nier Automata on my Steam Deck.
>A B C G W
You didn't beat the game.
>Story felt like it was written by a complete hack
I agree NieR automata is the worst game out of DoD1, 2, 3 & the NieR subseries but still: you didn't beat the game.
>visual style of this game is mostly in gray colors
Yes, that's intentional. It's part of the overarching narrative and plays into the state of the world post gestalts, abominations like emil, replicants, aliens, machines & androids. It signifies the complete lack of humanity as this is where humanity has been crushed by the gods; this ties into DoD1's ending D. You're supposed to see only the vegetation where the world has been reclaimed by nature and red used to signify the corruption, (manah, red eye disease, logic virus, N2) again tying back to ending D. Additionally black, purple, red & pink for mako, white, yellow & sand bleaching for WCS and as a result of the sun being static this is a joke in universe from N1 but pushed into world design for N:A.
I'd shit on you for not beating the game and not getting those themes but that would be needlessly patronising beyond the pale as it does require knowledge of the previous games and themes.
Finish the game anon, D & E are there waiting for you, watch a video of what's left of rein and read the additional parts if you want. Maybe it won't filter you quite so hard next time.

Oh and yeah the combat sucks. It's a minimal ARPG, it's slightly less clunky than NieR, a bit of an improvement in some ways over DoD3 and miles better than DoD1/2 but it's still not that deep compared to say a full fledged character action game. If you look at it as what NieR was supposed to be, taking influence from KH then you can see he kinda got what he was looking to do for that game realised by taking on Platinum but I still really prefer DoD3's gameplay. Valid criticism there for sure.
>>
>>500118260
>It just doesn't seem to pick up some games and makes them flicker like crazy
depending on the monitor, that's how adaptive sync works.
>Turning on the frame counter on my monitor shows the refresh rate changing non-stop
what framerates are the games running at? again if it's running within your monitor's adaptive sync range not at a locked framerate then it's working. If it's running at a low framerate then your monitor is doing low framerate compensation which is a requirement for newer freesync monitors that technically 'multiply' the game's framerate so they go into the monitor's adaptive sync range. I'd look up "$MONITORNAME freesync flicker" in your prefered search engine.
>>
>>500124884
It's San Andreas and it runs at 30 FPS, so I don't know why it's trying to run higher than that.
>>
>>500126787
Because 30 fps is below most monitors minimum refresh rate so it doubles or triples the refresh rate to match game's framerate.
>>
>>500129825
>below most monitors minimum refresh rate
adaptive sync range
>>
>>500126787
look up what your monitor's adaptive sync range is. i don't know a way to do it on linux, but on windows you'd open amd's control panel, go to the display section and hover over your monitor.
>>
>>500132829
it seems like it can go down to 50hz. but is there really no way to tell programs that if they're trying to go under that, then don't use adaptive sync?
>>
>>500133061
i think adaptive sync is a global thing, not too sure. it might not be any better but there's an enviroment varriable for kwin to force tearing although i'm drunk, it's 2am and i do not remeber it at the moment lmao.

>hasvk 0%
i remember the ace attorney collection wouldn't render characters on older intel graphics because of missing vulkan extensions, while on windows using dx11 it worked.

This is the 2nd card that's done this within 1 month of use. Other one was a PNY card I bought for vita geimu last year. Gonna give up and download the game on my PC instead, that way I won't have to download it a fourth time. People say Sandisk is good but I've also had 2 Sandisk cards give out years ago suddenly.
My hope is eroded but I did get a chance to check out how the dock was for integer scaling and all, pretty nice. Was stuck in YUV for a bit and desktop in 4k30 instead of 4k60 w/ RGB. Had to change my TV settings from auto/enhanced to standard then delete stuff in kscreen but it works nice now.

>i'm curious if the performance would be better with this
Going to level with u lad.
If you're not on dynamic res, yeah, that's how it'll be. It's the same on NV hardware on windows too.
If you scale the performance based off of what consoles were running it at 720p-1080p dynamic res for 60fps and 1080-1440p for 30, it tracks roughly watt for watt on a 2080 and RX6700 vs the PS5 but WILL randomly tank in cutscenes or specific situations when a certain model or effect is loaded. For a 4070 that should be about 1.5/6x~ so 45 fps 1080-1440p dynamic. I haven't tried XVIfix on Linux yet, but that's able to remove the silly 95% dynamic res cap the game has too. I ended up playing the game at 900-1440 @ 30-40 to match roughly where it was on PS5.
I know it sounds stupid but because it scales pretty much watt for watt, just like XIV does, there's a little inefficiency there and more for upscaling too if choked on VRAM (4070 can clear it) but as of the recent patch it's extremely close. If you're looking for 60 fps that's a bit out of your range unless they scale back.

It's gonna take a bit before that game can be bruteforced in a static resolution god I hate that term already. This is why the industry should not be building games off of dynamic res and neither should they be building them around 30 fps caps like XVI. I got friends who won't play the game because they can't get 1440/60 lmao.
If you're scaled up vs where you are on Windows, any more gains will be minimal at best.

I just changed my GPU performance mode from "Automatic" to "Advanced -> Power saving" in CoreCtrl and my temps dropped 20C on medium load. I think my games run better too as I'm getting stable 60FPS now instead of 55-60 on heavy load.

How did you install the base game and how are you running the DLC installer? Specifically, are you just running Wine from the command line or are you using some Wine runner (Lutris, Proton, etc.) which might be using a different Wine prefix for the DLC installer?
Innoextract is nice, especially for some specific use cases -- e.g. when you want to extract only certain files required by a source port, or when you've scripted the game installation and you want it to finish without interactive user input, or when you want to install the game files outside of the Wine prefix for any reason -- but I don't agree with the other guy's
>Why are you even launching graphical installer?
because running GOG installers always just works in my experience and therefore should generally be easier than using a command line tool that you've never seen before. Innoextract may turn out to be the best way around your issue if that DLC installer is fucked for some reason, but as far as I know, there's no good reason that the DLC installer shouldn't be able to find the base game if you're using the same prefix into which the base game was installed.

i tried with steam, heroic, and lutris, creating a new prefix each time.
i tried to protontricks the .exe into the game's prefix, and also the equivalent. i've never had problems with this, i did it in the past.
i also tried creating a prefix then putting the entire game inside that prefix, then installing the dlcs in that prefix but it still couldn't find it. i think it has to do with windows registry keys because on online forums people suggested this but idk how to do it cause it was for different games

i run this game on windows with dlss set to quality and graphics all set to max and get higher frames than linux, ive tested on my dualboot and its wayyy smoother on windows. some areas dropped to 20 fps on linux and the same areas was like a solid 90, ik some areas are still a little iffy on windows with lower frames but nowhere near as borderline unplayable as on linux. even cutscenes with the fps unlocker mod have lower frames on linux, i think this game just doesn't agree with proton, nvidia card doesnt help but not sure amd is any better. denuvo might be an issue too.

Native DX9 on Linux. It's faster than WineD3D but I don't know how it compares to DXVK. Only used it on systems with no Vulkan.

Yes, but it's older than DXVK and as we have DXVK now Gallium Nine isn't updated anymore.

>native Linux builds of EFMB, Maldita Castilla, Gaurodan, and Verminian Trap removed from Locomalito's web site
Mucho fucking yikes. Good thing I downloaded them while I had a chance. Some zoomer probably complained to him that they were unplayable, but they work just fine if you supply some missing libraries, as is typical for old GameMaker Studio games. (Last time I played them, on my previous Linux system, they only complained about missing libcrypto.so.1.0.0 and libssl.so.1.0.0; and now, on Linux Mint 22, they need libopenal.so.1 as well. All of these can be found in Steam's runtime folders, though, so I didn't even have to go online for them.) The games should probably "just work" if played through Steam Linux Runtime, but copying the libraries and setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH works too.
The native port of EFMB actually works better than running the Windows version with Wine. At least when I run it in Bottles using the Soda 9.0-1 runner, the Windows version is missing some main menu and level transition music. (I assume that's Wine failing to do something, as opposed to the Windows version of the game just having less music. I'm too lazy to spin up a Windows VM to find out.)
>>

Okay, so the Verminian Trap port is slightly broken — and probably always was, considering what the problem is: pressing "Q" to quit or "R" to reset on the pause screen doesn't work, so I have to Alt+F4 to close the game. All the other controls are perfectly responsive though. How strange.

>>500500874
I bet it is using sdl 1.2 and has a corresponding library within the game's folder. Removing said library and making symlink to the system one from sdl12-compat package might solve the issue.
>>
>>500461558
To understand what a game does when you install it and might check for later you can back up the *.reg and then check the diff with the *.reg after running the installer. (Also may be a good idea to do this with the "find ." command output inside the prefix as well)

I have this in my bookmarks which looks interesting, but I never tried it. https://github.com/castaneai/wineregdiff
