By the time SL was releasing the "borrowed power" debate had been raging for a few years and we'd seen both good and bad implementations of it but when players addressed concerns about how retarded the covenant system was the devs just went "suck our dick we'll fix it retroactively halfway through the expansion and you can take it" which is what happened. The covenant crap was fucking god awful at launch and all the meta power systems (covenants, Torghast currency, leggos in general, conduits, soul bind crap, etc) was the worst it's ever been in terms of needless power systems stacked on each other. Torghast was a pretty objective failure, navigating the maw was fucking dog shit, and even as something as simple navigating the zones was uniquely bad because they all required you fly back to Oribos). The patch cyle was also dogshit as well. Took six months to get Korthia which genuinely had as much content to do as this throw away .7 patch island does and then a glacial advance of nothing as we waited another 6+ months for Zerith Boreass.
