Not gonna be working on OSF for awhile, but yesterday I got a lot of work done for the collision. Pic related is a visualization of all the Sonic 1 collision data drawn onto the screen with a script I wrote. There are artifacts and some messed up tiles because of scripting errors, but I'm nearly halfway there in terms of porting all the original collision to OSF.

I fixed the collision drawing script. As far as I can tell, this image is a 100% accurate depiction of Sonic 1's collision data, drawn straight from the binary. Some of it looks a little weird, but every tile I've manually checked has perfectly lined up with a corresponding graphical tile.

Those of you who decompiled the .pck files of previous OSF releases might have noticed that level graphics were stored like this. This is so bad. It's a bunch of wasted space and memory, and it was done like this because I was lazy and retarded. Future versions are going to build the levels with 16x16 tiles, which will be tedious but the benefit here is that each 16x16 tile corresponds with a collision tile, so I won't need to place the collision tiles separately. And, ideally, I can just build the original level layouts by writing another script to parse the binary storage of those layouts in the ROM.

For OSF, I'm soon going to do what I did for the collision data, except for the actual layouts of the terrain in every level. I want to avoid having to manually create every chunk by hand; in Green Hill Zone, there are 64 chunks, each comprised of 256 tiles, so that'd be 16,384 16x16 tiles. Of course, about half of that is empty space, but that'd still be thousands of tiles that would need to be manually arranged for GHZ alone, let alone the other zones. If I can write a decent script for this, the graphics and collision of every zone can be automatically ripped straight from the original game. Work smarter, not harder.
