Back to back 2-1 with WB, the trophy eludes me again today. It's been interesting that almost all of my WB decks have a decent amount of sac. Not sure if that's just my style or if it's intended. Sole loss was to another WB deck, one game to screw and the other just to card advantage. Amulet may be too slow, I had a rough time with it this run. Or maybe it was just the lack of infestation sages. I went back and forth on the number of soul shackle zombies vs angel of finality, I'm not sure which is better overall. I ended up leaning towards angel, I think that was the right call. Against more aggro decks I think I would've swapped them out for zombies, but it never came up.

Tough runs today, another 1-2. One opponent had a curve of three rares in a row, another I simply got outplayed. I was just short of going monowhite here, I think I would've if I had enough cards. Cat collector + dazzling angel is a great synergy, especially when you've got beastkin ranger out. The hydra is too slow, I probably should've ran something else over it, maybe a bite down or the wolf.

Yeah, you get to sideboard with your drafted cards. How early you decide on colors depends on the set and your preference, usually by the end of pack 1 I have at least one color I'm running for sure, and have an idea of what my second will be, if it's not locked as well. But I know other people prefer to stay open even during pack 2. The sideboarding is usually more about shifting cards around for certain matchups rather than specific cards. Like this run I swapped out a healer's hawk for bite down when I was against a UW fliers deck. Last run I added seeker's folly because I saw my opponent play a lot of X/1 creatures. But really, I just prefer bo3 because it help soothe my ego, losing a game to land shittery doesn't feel as bad if you get a chance to redeem yourself and still save the match.

The search for a trophy continues. Shame too, this one was very close but in the penultimate game I got them down to 1 life before losing to topdecked removal, and in the final game they dropped an Arahbo and I didn't draw any of my own damn removal. I don't know why I thought arcane epiphany was 6 mana, it's actually pretty good. The gutless plunderers were great multiple times, picking out the best draw out of the next three is good shit even if not real card advantage. I feel like a lot of the archetypes are just bait, there's five threshold cards in total in the set and the only common is trash. Similar deal with morbid and some others. Obviously there's other advantages to be gained from self mill, but

We're so fucking back boys, got a 3-0 to cap the night. God bless Alesha and her giant dick of value, one game she brought back double digit mana worth of creatures. Stromkirk bloodthief also won multiple games, and worked well with syphoner/nighthawk. I don't think I ever cast my 5 drops, which was probably for the best. On the other hand, frenzied goblin was a disappointment and I cut it after a couple games. Having to attack itself to trigger the ability means it usually has to be reserved for alpha strikes or when your opponent only has one creature left.

Results for day 3:
One 3-0, five 2-1s, and two 1-2s. for a total of 15-9 today and 50-19 for the whole set.
Net total gems is -4k gems today, and -3250 for the whole set.
Currently at 93 packs, and 116 rares drafted.

Day 3 impressions:
I did awful today, not happy with how I performed. I can think of a few specific times where I misplayed and threw away a 3-0 or 2-1. Part of it is probably due to me cramming more games than I usually do in these past few days, part of it is just me being dumb. I think I've gotten a handle on the drafting portion of FDN, it's mostly the piloting portion that I need work on. That said, overall I've still been doing well so I'm not too upset. I'm more or less already at the point where I can complete the set if I just complete the pass, but I want to keep going and try to improve my record a bit. Might not be tomorrow though. Looking at 17lands, it seems BG is performing the worst in the set alongside UG and UR, which I'm surprised by. G has been falling down in my rankings, but B has been quite good. I think the signpost is also quite good too. On the other end, there's BR, WU, and WB in the top spots currently, which does align with what I've seen. It's good to be on the board early, like most recent sets you really don't want to fall behind because games can end quick. Bit surprised, given that it's a core set and I figured they'd want things to be slower, but hey.

I've never interacted with drafting before, it just never sat right with me that you spend all that currency to get in and then you get blown away game 1 and you're just SOL. I also assume if your card knowledge is low, you basically will never make it past 2-3 games and again the currency is wasted. Am I wrong in thinking that?

You'll have a rough time if you're not good at the game and unfamiliar with the cards. It's one of the most skill intensive formats. Plus even the best drafters will have streaks of bad luck, so on Arena that means taking a hit to currency. But if you're good at it, over the long run it's far better to be drafting than it is to buy packs. And unfortunately the only way to improve is to practice, and that means spending currency or money.

I'm not particularly good at drafting and I don't do it regularly but I'd argue that if you average less than 3 wins, you're better off buying packs and brewing in constructed to get a sense of what makes a balanced deck because the drop in rewards from going 3-3 to 2-3 is so steep. There might be skills you can only acquire through drafting that'll get you from 4-3 to 5-3 but I think what you need to get from a losing to a winning average is just a solid foundation(ha!)al understanding of deck building. Drafting is a lot more fun than Constructed.
But yes it's expensive if you're new.
Ideally you are already good at Magic fundamentals, then you listen to a bunch of resources, research the set, and use data so see which cards are good to give yourself an advantage before you draft.

Late start today, but got a 2-1 that was almost a 3-0, stolen only in the very last game by my opponent topdecking Arahbo, cathar commando destroying my valkyrie's call, and then bake into a pie, in the precise order needed while I was drawing lands. Still, a decent run for this list. I was on W pretty early, but didn't lock in on B until much later, sometimes late pack 2. This contributed to my lower number of playables, having to run shit like crypt feaster. I find that WB is very reliant on the removal suite, you'll often have the most removal options but if you don't draw them or waste them and run out, then you're kinda fucked. The good lifegain payoffs are all uncommon or above, so you'll usually only have a small handful. This is true of a lot of the archetypes in the set, it feels like the focus is more on the fundamentals of what the colors bring to the color pie, which makes sense for a core style set.

foundations is actually just bulk rare and mythic galore, the draft environment might be fun but there is actually just 0 good cards in the set

Another 2-1. I did not like this list at all, so I'm quite fine with that record. One of my matches was pretty much won both times by my opponent getting fucked over on lands, so I guess that's luck on my side compared to last run. On the other hand, I drew archmage of runes exactly zero times, so who can say. Overall though, I'm still sort of down on U. It's not my playstyle and beyond that I think it's genuinely weak this set, outside of a few key cards. It's also not very flexible, since the archetypes feel scattered. Mill doesn't help your ramp, spellslinging doesn't help your fliers. Yes, there are a few synergy cards that bridge the gap, but for the most part they're pretty weak. Stuff like mocking sprite and tolarian terror need a lot of things to align in order to work out.

The quest to improve my record is not going well, this run landed a 1-2. Similar to other decks today, it's been pretty janky. This one has way too many 3 drops. Got taken down one game by an electroduplicate, of all things. Here I got plenty of lifegain without the good payoffs, which echoes what I mentioned a few runs ago. Not much to talk about on this one, I got beaten fair and square, you just gotta power through the bad stretches.

RNG giveth, RNG taketh. Got my 3-0, off the back of a very bomb heavy draft. Both R and B were very open, which I'm glad I recognized early. Even went for 18 lands, though I don't think I actually needed to. Not much to talk about on this one either, for the complete opposite reason. I definitely misplayed one time that I can remember, but this run was way too loaded. I'll note that I've been seeing gorehorn raider go very late a lot in these past few runs despite R not always being open, which seems weird. Do people not think it's a good card? It seems like a top tier common.

Am I wrong for feeling any Commander with Blue Counterspell access is basically stupidly broken on brawl? The amount of free value they get seems insane.
Online the rhetoric I see is "bait it out" but like...how? I'm playing Green and even with ramp they're not dumb enough to counterspell a so-so creature. They wait for actually relevant shit (like my Commander)
And in the long run giving them time seems to lead to a loss because of the shit they set up

I actually started this run last night but went to bed halfway through, we got the 3-0 though. Hatcher sadly never popped off, but crawler was invaluable and help win a lot of games. Faebloom trick is of course a beast. Run away together is actually quite good when paired with helpful hunter, basically a 4 mana bounce that cantrips and those have been Standard playable at times. Plus you get to break up that cost into separate chunks, and it lets you chump block. Rogue's passage also won a couple games here, which I was somewhat surprised by, given that a lot of my creatures were already evasive or small.

FDN conclusion:
28 total runs, with a match record of 61-23.
28 trad draft runs costs 42k gems, and the gem rewards from all runs was 38,500 gems, which comes out to 3500 gems spent.
Had 9 trophies, which is almost enough points for a play-in qualifier entry.
Before opening packs, I was at 134 rares and 22 mythics, some of which are from the starter decks.
After opening all packs, I'm at 226/240 rares and 41/80 mythics. I'm up 19 rare WC and 7 mythic WC.
There's still like 30 more FDN packs to go in the pass so that'll fill out the missing stuff and then some.

Altogether, that's the set completed for 3,500 gems. That'd be 17.5 packs from the store, we can even round it up to 18. Took basically three days to do it, though that could obviously be spread out. Performed slightly worse than in DSK, but the extra free cards from the starter decks made up for it.
Once again, buying packs is a scam. Good luck in your runs, draftbros.

There's plenty of sets where blue is weak, though if you flat out refuse to play it at all then you'll run into trouble. FDN is actually a pretty good example. Unless you're in UW or have dreadwing scavenger or a few other key cards for UB, blue is fairly weak.

That's why I don't like Traditional Draft anymore, the rewards aren't good (unless Play-In Qualifiers are worth much more than I'm aware).
I'm 20 drafts deep so far in Premier and the game count is 91-52.
But I'm breaking even on total gems spent, if not slightly ahead.
Trad Draft has better gameplay and you win more because the games are easier but losing gems when you go 2-1 sucks too much.

A play-in qualifier entry is 20 points, or 20k gold or 4k gems. A 3-0 gets you 2 points, the equivalent 400 gems. So if I was planning on entering then I'd be slightly above breaking even as well. Plus as you said, trad draft has better gameplay so I would prefer it just for that even if the EV is lower at my skill level. I think trad draft is also just the fastest rate of acquisition as well, I do enjoy draft but I'm not a perma grinder and I wouldn't want to play it forever.

First of all, that's a 70 card deck. Unless there's a very specific reason for it, people run 60 card decks in constructed. Second, typical 60 card decks run 23-26 lands, depending on their curve. For your 70 card deck, you have 21 lands (with mana rocks listed with them for some reason). The overall list makes it pretty clear it's not a competitive deck, which is completely fine, but it also means your judgement of the game is questionable at best. I highly doubt you have no mana issues with it, I somewhat doubt you even have this deck at all.

People who play magic seriously don't buy packs, they buy singles. Even if 4 copies of a card are really expensive, like $20-40 for each copy, it's still cheaper than buying boxes of randomized packs and not opening anything playable for one of your decks you want to play.

I feel like the algorithm likes when you make fresh decks
