Finished another quick (6-7 hours) playthrough of Romancing SaGa 3 (not the one that just got remade, that's RS2). This time I decided to build a minmaxed team that could defeat the full-power final boss while also playing the game exclusively in Commander Mode.Commander mode is an alternate way of controlling your team where you give up the ability to choose each action for each character but gain other bonuses instead. Characters regain some HP each round or are revived with 1HP if knocked down. You can use powerful formation skills that involve several characters attacking at once and do not consume the same type of skill points that your other skills use. If you're not using a formation skill, your main character can instead use a healing item each turn so you effectively gain another character in commander mode.You can just tell your units to attack with their skills and you can remove their weak skills before the battle, so it's generally advantageous to use Commander Mode. Another option allows your team to attack preemptively with basic attacks ~80% of the time, this is effective when combined with formation techniques.My team is composed of strong characters with high LP. Nora has a shield, Robin attacks twice with the Silver Hand. I removed the tornado spell from Bai Meiniang and gave her HP Drain instead so she doesn't wipe my team if she gets confused and keeps herself healthy when I command my team to use skills. She does fairly good damage with Blades of Wind due to the formation bonus and Archfiend shield.Ward has the Dragon Sword, Everfrost Blade, and a shield in his inventory. He also has the Flame Mantle equipped. This way he can attack first with Monsoon Slash, can block with his shield, and is immune to heat and cold attacks.

And in the final battle you have one less combat unit if your main character is busy commanding.Here's a minmaxed team without commander mode, this time designed to speed through the game (~4 hours) with suboptimal equipment and defeat the weakened final boss. This formation boosts the speed and attack of the three characters in front. Just wanted to say I managed to play through another chapter of Tokyo Xanadu. The first chapter that struck me as kind of odd, with its very heavy focus on the idol stuff to the point that it felt like some folks at the studio were such big fans that they felt like it was necessary to include enough adoration towards it to cover an entire chapter for it. I know it was centered around the one related character, but still, it felt kind of on the nose.Also I hate, HATE when I start feeling like this game is a very solid 9/10 and then it drops those dungeon floor layout where you don't know which ones are dead ends and which places you need to backtrack to, and rooms that include platforming that do not have enough targets to keep the combo going so you just inevitably lose a very great sub-200 combo right before crossing that threshold. Saatana.Still, the story is finally taking some necessary steps towards cool stuff, so I'm really looking forward to what happens next.
