The "aggressive gods" were aggressive only in the sense when you speak of wars between gods or whatever their aggressive side naturally comes out. Christianity actually mostly spread by winning battles ("wow, their god is kind of strong too, we should add him to our pantheon!"), subsuming other festivals and gods ("hmm, there's no reason we can't pay lip service to this foreign god, he might pitch in after all") and being extraordinarily fucking intolerant of any other godsIn reality they mostly took advantage of the holes in the disorganized nature of pagan worship but Christianity only really succeeded in getting people to stop thinking of them as gods rather than halting pagan worship altogether.
