I respectfully disagree. Not being able to sprint makes getting to that warthog all the more important and gives vehicles more value because of their mobility. And it helps prioritize positioning, so you don't have to run away when shot at because you wouldn't have made the bad decision to expose yourself carelessly in the first place. Not being able to sprint makes the gameplay more enjoyable.

It's just that as good as some of the 6 maps look, some of the really important ones look sub-par like Ridgeline. None of them quite look as good as Halo 3 maps either.

You know what's incredibly frustrating is all the assets are available to create something that looks like the left, but plays like the right, in an incredibly lazy and low effort way: you could literally just port Halo 3 and Reach maps and assets into a single engine, maybe mix and match some stuff like Halo 3 spartan models but the better looking Reach elites, Halo 3 AR model, but the Halo Reach Magnum model, etc.
And tune everything to play like CE, both the gameplay and the weapon layouts on the maps

but I've never seen a modder who was capable of restraint, modding always seem to go off the rails in some way eventually, and the stars would have to align for the multiplayer to become active

I think it's also a situation where a modder wants to show of his skills, flex how good he is as a game designer for the attention factor, so sticking to a homework assignment like "faithfully re-create Halo CE's gameplay" starts to feel un-glamorous halfway into a project and you get SPV3 or that Halo CE in Halo 3's engine project

Here's the lazy man's remake of Halo CE multiplayer

- Use the Reach engine(?) - seems like the best one, although I know the Halo 4 engine is basically the same but a little easier to use(?)
- Port the following maps
H:R Beaver Creek
H3 Valhalla (replaces Blood Gulch)
H:R Sword Base (replaces Boarding Action)
H3 Cold Storage (replaces Chill Out)
H:R Anchor 9 (replaces Chiron - this is the only one out of the 3 and Reach maps I could think of that sort of correlates: it fits the Marathon aesthetic and is a gimmick map)
H:R Penance (damnation Remake)
H3 Midship (replaces Derelict)
H:R High Noon (Hang 'em High)
H3 Narrows (replaces Longest)
H:R Solitary (Prisoner)
H3 Orbital (this one seems like a decent fit to replace Rat Race, having similar multi-tier layouts and claustrophobic inner paths)
H3 Citadel (replaces Wizard)
H3 Avalanche (replaces Sidewinder)
(this is the full original Xbox map list, but you have 12 more BTB maps from Halo 3 and Reach that could be used to fill in the places of the Gearbox BTB maps)
- For models/assets, use the Halo 3 Spartan (maybe use the CE armor pieces), H3 Assault Rifle, H3 Rockets, H3 Sniper, H3 Needler, H3 Banshee, H3 Scorpion, H3 Ghost, H:R Warthog, H:R Magnum, H:R Shotgun, H:R Plasma Pistol, H:R Plasma Rifle, H:R grenade models
(this fills the full Halo CE Xbox weapon sandbox, but of course you could use the H3 Fuel Rod, H3 Flamethrower, and H:R Rocket Hog to fill out the Gearbox sandbox additions)
Use Reach's Anniversary multiplayer gameplay as a foundation and tune everything from there to get it feeling like Halo CE.

It's so tantalizingly close to existing and yet so far

(oh, forgot to add: use the original Halo CE sound effects - that's what will really tie the whole thing together)

- There's a lot of maps in Halo's history that would play well with Halo CE gameplay. As BAD examples, I think maps like Tempest or Highlands have too much cover and not enough space for vehicles despite being BTB maps. They would need retooling (mainly removing a lot of cover objects and opening up vehicle space). But on the other hand, Powerhouse is a fantastic map that could fit comfortably with Halo CE's gameplay. Halo 2's Relic would be a great fit both in terms of gameplay and aesthetics. It would take playtesting to figure out which ones actually ARE fun, and not all of them would be. But a lot of Legacy maps, and even some 343i maps could be great with Halo CE's combat
- Personally I think the Halo 2 Spartan player model is the coolest. Would be very preferable to have that in HD than to use the H3 spartan or even a Halo 1 spartan model remake.
- No reason not to have playable Elites. You've got the Reach and Halo: Infinite models to work with. Gun to my head, I prefer the Reach one, but Infinite Elites have a good silhouette
- Halo CE has Campaign weapons that aren't in the Multiplayer sandbox - the Energy Sword, Fuel Rod, and Sentinel Beam. Oh and I guess the Wraith. All were modeled in Halo 3. On top of this, Halo has had a ton of interesting weapons and vehicles. Not all would compliment CE gameplay, but a lot of them would. Reach Grenade Launcher, Halo 4 Railgun, the original Gearbox fuel rod, Reach Plasma Launcher, Halo 2 Brute Shot, Halo 3 machine gun turrets - you wouldn't want to add anything functionally redundant, but there's room for more weapons
- Halo 3/Infinite style Equipment is a possiblity for CE gameplay. Both aren't ideal, and some Reach Armor Abilities should be converted to Equipment, like Hologram, but Equipment is a good addition to Halo gameplay.

I've been playing online games since counter strike and TF classic. Halo since Halo 2 and other online games. Honestly most trash talking was pretty tame or evenly hostile. I swapped the skybox with the skybox from Halo 3 Sandbox. There is a force field effect between the playable area and the outside. It looks pretty bad, and I tried to show what it would look like if it were replaced with glass.

The Halo 3 Sidewinder remake Avalanche should look more like this. I swapped its skybox with the skybox from Sidewinder. I also desaturated the map. Sidewinder is actually many shades of gray, where Avalanche is more icy blues and greens. I increased both the black values and the white values to provide more contrast, and create more of the icy impression the original map gives.

Here's a comparison between Halo: Reach's Prisoner remake Solitary, how it looks on the left, and roughly how it should look on the right.
There is so much glowy blue shit all over that map. My guess is that the designers weren't confident in the strength of the basic Forerunner aesthetic, and they wanted to make it "extra" with all kinds of lights and wacky visuals like the rotating prisons standing on impossibly thin spines in the skybox, but the simple idea of the broken window with the ice and snow pouring in created plenty of visual dynamism without going overboard.

The geometry itself is ok. I'd personally remove all the gravity lifts, except the two inside the cave, and clear out some of the driving space, but the skybox leaves something to be desired. The general aesthetic isn't as nice as Sidewinder even if the layout is fine.

I just think it looks better. You're right of course, it's more correct, but Halo has always reminded me of surrealism, and later when I found out about it in my teens, the more geometrically precise Symbolist movement.
I think Halo's impact has less to do with how scientifically accurate it is, more to do with how so much of it is dreamlike imagery made plausible through its sci-fi veneer.
