They said they think they made Skyhold too big and annoying to navigate but that was soulful to me. Hell, you could see them everywhere in DA2, scurrying about in low town and in the slums where Anders' clinic was. You could even meet one in Val Royeaux in Inquisition, an elven slave who dreamed about the return of Mythal after your mission in the Arbor Wilds, with his master scolding him because his thrashing and crying had woken him up.

The only companions we get some info about are Aveline, provisional Viscount now that Varric is dead, who brings Kirkwall's survivors to Sebastian in Starkhaven. No one else gets a mention, so you're free to imagine what you want - but all past companions' circumstances are now dire, because their homes are lost, they were unable to save them, so they're either dead, Blighted, or cooped up somewhere helping other survivors. Hardly the happy endings we envisioned for them in the past.
