Yeah, I see these EA flops as basically kickstarters that didn't get their funding. The devs of them were hoping that support for their game would appear out of nowhere. When nobody showed up they slowly get disenchanted before they give up. This leads to less people buying EA games and the cycle continues. If you want a kickstarter, then run a kickstarter with a demo. And make the funding goal something real like $100,000, not pansy shit. If you want a patreon then make a patreon. Don't make an EA release that you hope people will buy to pay for you to make the game, that shit never works out.

Gotta search for it. Find the current position in the tilemap, loop through tiles moving outward from that point until a hole is encountered. Treat each loop around as a ring around the player so two holes of equal distance from the player can be detected and some logic can "choose" between them. TileMap has get_cellv() and local_to_map() to get information about tiles and relative positions, loop through tiles within a range limit to find the holes, etc.

If I was in that position I'd cut the scope big time, I need a bare minimum amount of reviews to actually go the full scope. Unironically my early access page only shows the bare minimum of additional content. More content is planned but only if the game does well enough. Though if my customer base is really small I might just ignore adding the minimum content and just hitting the button to push it into full release.

I'll be transparent and I'll tell you why I will most probably not.
Your choice of your Main design is very bad for a number of reasons, your response can be boiled down to "it's my game I don't care". This kind of attitude is what I don't accept. Because there will surely be other case of bad polish, bad design and overall bad choices that will be answered in that way. When after X years you will release to 20 reviews don't ask yourself "how this could happen".
If you dev for you, your players will be very very few. It's also overall not good design. No one here is a miyazaki(gibili) or a tarantino, that can make it's own vision and will find success.
Otherwise we won't be here.

Also, lemme just point out your defeatist attitude on chara design. Your chara design can't be better? Really? How much did you study animation? Did you study chara design for the same amount of time? Nigga pls.

There are a lot of ways to do it, a RigidBody2D is suited to what it looks like he's already trying to do. If you feel differently then share, don't just cry about it. Area2D is for detection, RigidBody for moving physics-enabled objects, StaticBody for non-moving collision-enabled objects, and CharacterBody for collision-enabled bodies without physics.

That ShapeCast shouldn't be necessary. You should be able to enable physics on your Tilemap and set up the layers/masks correctly to not need it. In Godot 4+ every tile has a separate body.

Blow is demoralized because he started out in the very early days on indie gamedev where almost anyone capable of making a competent video game was rewarded with success. Back then competition was nonexistent since there weren't a fraction of the resources that exist online now. Even after you'd made your game getting it on the Xbox store or Steam was a difficult process in of itself. If a new indie game was released it was worth writing about in all the big games publications, you got free publicity by just existing.

Nothing is guaranteed anymore. Just being able to make a game doesn't immediately grant you recognition or sales like it did back when Braid released, and JBlow is struggling to come to terms with that. Given his massive ego, I also believe it's been difficult for him to accept that he and his work aren't household names anymore. The current dominant consumerbase for videogames (gen Z) don't give a shit about Braid or the Witness. He's not entirely back to square one, but he's lost a good chunk of the name recognition that he was seemingly hoping would sell his future projects.

It's not that bad, I'm not a shader guy, I wasn't sure if I could do it before I started making it.

First I made a sprite of a single coin. In the fragment shader, doing `COLOR = texture(TEXTURE, UV);` shows the single sprite.

If you do ``COLOR = texture(TEXTURE, UV * 7.0);` and the texture is set to 'Repeat', you get a 7x7 grid of coins. They're really small, so to counteract this, I scale the sprite times 7 so in the end each coin has the size as our original coin.

Then I just have a big matrix 'order' of 7x7 where each cell corresponds to a single coin. And in the matrix, I put the order the coin will appear. I just put those values by hand in a order I thought would look good, it's pic related.

Once I have that, in the fragment shader, I can use UV to know the coordinates of coin I'm drawing. `int(UV * 7.0)` for example gives me the column. So I just check if 'order[row * 7 + col] <= quantity'. If it it's, I set the alpha to 1, otherwise to 0. The higher 'quantity', the more coins show up. c'est fini.

There are some issues with this image. The triple-cone drill design is for boring into hard rock or substrate. In order for it to function, it needs to be protruding from the main drilling mechanism. Additionally, as a borer, the body needs to be able to angle behind and fit into the circumference of the boring head.

Some design modifications I suggest:
- Give the machine a neck with a mechanism for rotation (jutting out from the body)
- Add treads to the arms so the machine can push itself along when boring
- maybe add treads to the front / back of the legs for fast movement or pushing
- The boring head usually turns itself, so there needs to be some kind of mechanism on the neck
- add mechanism for the eyes to pop out from the side when its not in boring mode

Overall, cool design.

I'm trying to figure out how to do the turns in a multiplayer dungeon crawler.
I want to do simultaneous turns to start with, so with a party of four all four players can do something without the players having to pick what to do in sequence. That seems fine.
But when players aren't in combat, the idea of players having to wait for eachother still seems kind of obnoxious. Eg. you're just trying to walk down a corridor and another player is pissfarting around with their inventory. So maybe relax the 'every player must submit an action for the turn to progress' constraint. But then what happens to the NPCs on the map? If one player isn't doing anything and another player is doing things that kind of works. But if multiple players are doing things at once, it'll basically end up with each npc doing an action for each action of each player. I could partially relax the constraint and make it so the turn progresses while out of combat once a second if at least one player has submitted a turn so that if multiple players are doing things, then there'll be exactly one "action" carried out by the NPCs for every set of actions carried out by the party as a whole, but a player may "miss" a turn.
That seems like it could be fine while out of combat. "Combat" would probably be defined as "a creature has visibility over a creature it is hostile to". There's probably some funniness in any of these relaxed constraint situations where a player pissfarting around suddenly finds himself in combat because an npc walked up to him due to another player doing things.
This is all predicated on npcs doing things on while not in combat. Which I think is a given, a big part of nethack for me is how while I'm doing something on a floor - so are the npcs.

it's not hard at all to churn out unity shovelware with flipped assets and sell on your good gameplay. they're even doing it in unreal nowadays.
hand drawn art is also a lot simpler than doing pixel art when you're not an impostor putting out programmer slop. animating it with rigging engines is also super simple and cheap and a well known technique by now.
big games don't do low fidelity because it risks making their high investment high prod value game look cheap to audiences, thus leaving the niche open for indies more open to experimentation. thus it is an aesthetic.

It'd be easy to handle that shit with a loop and just define your input maps in a simple dictionary. I'm not denying that's the case for some people, but pic related literally just picked up game dev because of his brother and in 1-2 years finished a successful game. There are a lot more cases like this.
And even putting all that aside, I spent a decade working and have nothing successful to show for it so it's all the same for me anyway.

It makes me think that game making/game design talent might actually be a thing of its own, completely outside of programming and art. And it makes me wonder if I should even bother continuing on a path which I'm clearly not suited for.

You market and sell to gamers, players. If your players dosen't know your game exists, they can't buy it. It's simple as that.

A few early reviews don't help with the algorithm. Marmoreal proved that, with almost 20 day-one reviews, but no bonus visibility from that. Steam primarily cares about what percentage of users are clicking on your capsule when they show it, and what percentage of users buy the game after looking at the store page. You can't game it with a few reviews. Review count doesn't matter to the algorithm.

Marmoreal had something like 20 reviews for less than 100 sales on day one, which is a very unhealthy ratio. Compare that to Tricky, which is at 96 reviews for 1784 sales (see >>503298343).
