So, what do you actually do if you want to make a game and can do X but can't do Y and don't have money to hire someone?
I get the feeling that people who would be alright with working on a game for revshare already have their own ideas and want people to work on their own game instead, and people who are looking to work on someone else's stuff want an actual job to get paid. Are you just fucked?

Yeah you are kinda fucked. I tried collaborating with other people, but finding the right person wastes a LOT of time, they can flake/ghost you after 3-6 months at which point you have to start all over again. I don't have time to play gacha with random internet strangers. The 2 man team who made Void Stranger met on Newgrounds where they talked about their favorite games, hit it off, then after a couple of years being friends they finally started working on something together. But I didn't have the luck to find someone like that here.
My current course of action: try to make a fun/decent selling game that hyper focuses on X and ignores my weak-point, Y. Then using that as leverage I team up with someone else who has released a game that's more Y focused. As we both have games under our belt, and confirmed we have the work discipline to finish a game, it'll be easier to find a common ground and team up. Or just hire someone with my profits if the game sells well, whatever, you don't have to make your masterpiece from Day 1.
The only reason I post in these threads is hoping I find someone who has the same tastes as me, and wants to make similar game as mine, and we'd become dev buddies. People who post here as an advertising method are retarded.

>>
>>503477992
>People who post here as an advertising method are retarded.
With that attitude no wonder you don't have gamedev buddies to collab with
>>
>>503476980
You first discard the idea of working on "your game" or "someone else's game". You start a collaboration where the exact game is left undefined, but the goal of the project is agreed upon. Most likely, you would collectively agree to make a game that gets all participants rich. Then you brainstorm how to do that. Then you divy up the work appropriately.

If you have a very strong vision for what the game looks like, then you need to work alone, and pay for anything you can't do yourself.

>will POE2 be good? is it worth paying 30 dollars or 60

Ofc it's gonna be good. The problem is to see if it's gonna be the next arpg of the decade (poe1 beats d4)
If you are asking, you are not a poe1 player. in this case, yes it's worth because you also get 30e worth of mtx. With that money you can buy some stashes and in theory don't buy anything else, ever.
In poe you need money only to buy new stashes: in 1 you can play for free till the endgame (if you reach it); in 2 we can't really know. But it seems all purchases translate between poe 1 and 2, so you can also try poe1 with stashes and have an easier time.
It's also worth it because it seems this beta will run for maybe a year, if you have hype.
Third, since this is a beta you can play and fail without pressure, every new poe league it's a race

Making a game with a buddy (he's doing the art) I'm trying to get him into game design as all his ideas are bad due to lack of exposure to good games (he wants us to add quick time events because he played the old god of war once and liked it... we're making a 2D game).
What games should I have him play for him to have better opinions? I gave him animal well, and he's getting into it way more than expected, this is a good sign.

>try to make a fun/decent selling game that hyper focuses on X and ignores my weak-point, Y. Then using that as leverage I team up with someone else who has released a game that's more Y focused
This is actually similar to what I'm planning, but not the same. I already had some 3 dudes ghosting me, so now I'm working on a demo on my own. I'm an artist and if I tried to make the whole game with my spaghetti code it'd take forever and fall apart sooner or later, so I'm using an engine with visual coding to make a short playable segment, but I won't be able to use it to make the whole game.
I'm hoping this demo will serve both as leverage and to really show what the game is supposed to be like. But my biggest problem right now is that I don't know where to post it once it's done, and I'm like 90% finished.
>>503478476
>If you have a very strong vision for what the game looks like, then you need to work alone, and pay for anything you can't do yourself.

>he wants us to add quick time events because he played the old god of war once and liked it
Anon let me stop you right there. I hear this and I know that you have first hand access to pure unfiltered retarded normie sovl. Now us, everyone itt, cauterized that part of themselves a long time ago, and that's why our games do not sell. We have no idea what the normies want. We think, QTEs? In a 2D game? That's retarded. But in reality, that's the kind of thing that is potentially going to produce a game that sells millions precisely because it's the right kind of retarded.

Now your job, as the (hopefully) non-retarded half of the team, is not to fix your retarded ally. Your job is to prevent him from taking over the project while you adapt his normie desires into a coherent vision. You need to collect all the ideas your friend thinks are cool from whatever shit games he played on the PS2, like chunks of playdoh, and mash them up into a beautiful functional piece of nostalgiabait that all the other dads who played God of War once are going to love. If you're recommending him games, it should be for the purpose of stirring his memory of other childhood shit to dredge out and drop into your project.

You and I are similar. Dumbest shit I've done in my indie dev path was looking up 3D sculpting and animation courses meant for industry professionals. It would take me weeks sculpt, texture, rig and animate a single high-poly model. After 15 months of being a complete retard I realized I was as far away as humanely possible from indie solo dev. I wish Pseudoregalia was released during that time instead, so I could use that as reference for what level of detail to aim for instead of just going "hurr more details and realistic models == better".

B-blorb, what are you doing! Your pickaxe... that's way too big! What a silly guy.

Seriously though, it's kind of tricky trying to figure out how blorb would actually carry a tool. He doesn't have hands but that doesn't matter, it's not a matter of logic but aesthetics. I think slinging the pickaxe behind him would be the best, but it's hard to convey that in 16x16 for an artlet like me. I probably will have to just settle for having an icon above the head, because having a different sprite for each direction and tool sounds like a pain.

For unity devs:
Is there any way to setup shadow rendering distance differently per object?
Like, having buildings render distance from far away and characters only render theirs when the camera is close. I have a ton of small objects and if I set shadow distance around their performance cost then it's way too short for buildings.

Tried to manually turn off shadows for small objects at medium distance, which kinda work, but it look ugly since there is smooth fade out between shadow ON and OFF with that method.

>Playing games does not make one better at game design

What in the fuck am I reading, now I get why this place is called amateur general, do you guys even care about games? In my opinion the best things are created from people who take a look at the world around them, see things they fucking despise, and then go out to make something better. Real examples would be, git, minecraft or the obvious normie factoid lamborghini that even my buddy keeps repeating because he watched one tiktok or something.
I love games, I try out dozens of games each week, and frankly, I dislike almost every game I play, hence why I ultimately ended up making my own.
That being said, there are multiple approaches to making things and while I would love to say mine is the only real one, the honest truth is that I'm wrong and retarded, there is no "best" way to create something.
You shouldn’t dismiss other ways of creating things.

Indie games investing in marketing should stop, continue investing in your game instead, if it's good it will sell, if it's bad, and you had to market it, you are now a scammer.
The amount of Twitter accounts I had to unfollow after their game released and turned out to be shit is growing each day.

Not seeing a successful game called "Coffin" on Steam or Itch. You don't mean The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, because it was advertised heavily and successfully, they did quite a bit of marketing and it was featured by numerous indie-game websites before release and at the time of the Steam early-access release, so I'm sure you're not talking about that game.

So you were talking about The Coffin of Andy and Leyley? Maybe you don't know what marketing is. The fandom wiki was started 6 months before the game came out, at the same time the subreddit opened, at the same time the demo was released, which is when they started doing devlogs. That is marketing.

You're just trolling at this point, but for the sake of historical accuracy, Coffin's "demo" was not intended as a demo. It was a standalone game that blew up in popularity to the point of people throwing money at the creator begging for more. Coffin is proof that if something is good, it will succeed without the creator even needing to try.

>Coffin is proof that if something is good, it will succeed without the creator even needing to try.
Not that guy but I feel like using "good" here is not entirely accurate.
Coffin exploded in popularity because of specific qualities that makes it very viral-worthy i.e. gets people (especially artists and terminally online folk) to talk about and share it everywhere.
But there are possible good games, better games even, that don't have the same viralness to it. Some of my favorite autist games have had over 20 years of work put into them, and they're not failures mind you, they're successes but it was a very slow burn success built over time, it never exploded like Coffin of Andy and Leyley, and by your logic that would mean it wasn't as good as it, which is simply not true. It just doesn't have the same mainstream spread-ability factor. "Good game" is way too much of a catch-all term IMO because different games succeed for different reasons.

Rance is the closest you'll get but women don't actually play that, they'd sooner watch some video, read some manga or listen to ASMR. Rance is more just 'gets respect', and Rance is the pinnacle of its class so you wouldn't match it anyway.

If you doubt me and want to do your own research, look here: https://www.dlsite.com/girls/ which is the non-BL section.
You can narrow it down to just 'games' https://www.dlsite.com/girls/fsr/=/order/trend/work_type_category[0]/game/options[0]/JPN/options[1]/ENG/options[2]/NM/is_tl/1/from/left_pain.work_type
but I use the word 'game' very tentatively here. Even with this stretched definition of 'game' on a games site, 550 / 20,000 works are classified as some sort of game.
Some of those results at the top look very much like "a girl gets raped by some bastard" games.

It's been over a decade of shit-tier simulation-style always-online microtransaction-filled trash that I would forgive in a heartbeat had any of them been fun, but no, not one. A fucking $7.99 extremely incomplete early-access agdg game is genuinely the most fun arcade snowboarding game since 2012, and it's the first and only example to ever be released on PC. It stands alone, and nostalgiafags like me are going to be lauding it aggressively for years to come.

When I was growing up, right from elementary school until high school, I knew a kid. Stereotypical gay type.
The thing is, he had more contact with women than any other guy I know. It's not as if he was particularly handsome, average at best. But he was always with the girls and he got along really well with them.

That's what this is. You are appealing to girls.
When most people here make a game, they are appealing to what they like - what guys like. In order to make something that girls like, you have to be like a girl in the first place. There are plenty of games made by guys who act like guys that appeal to women but that's usually a minor part of the success and it only comes as part of the male audience.
Otherwise, hypercasual games / phone games do appeal to women but that's not porn.
>>
>>503505018
It doesn't. You need as strong a sex drive as possible, otherwise, engaging in anything sex-related it a crushing, soulless endeavour to you. We're talking "hooker smoking and texting while having sex" type of soulless.

What's the point of being so disingenuous? There's not a single artist who has spent countless thousands of hours pouring their heart and soul into a project and doesn't want to show their work to the world. The difference is that when the gamedev with a good game tries to tell the world about their game, the world is interested and word about the game spreads with minimal effort and friction. Meanwhile, the gamedev with a bad game has to fight an uphill battle, because the world simply isn't interested in their game.

Sure, maybe there is a god. It's not that unbelievable to think that this world was created by something.
The leap in logic for me is the belief that it's an Abrahamic god and that the bible is real.
A book that is about ~4000 years old when we know that humans (as a species) are anywhere from 40,000 to 6 million years old depending on what you consider a modern human.

The gamedev renaissance hasnt happened yet and here's why.
Remember when gamedev doubters would say that you'd be better off being a code monkey than a gamedev if you cared about money? Well where are those code monkeys now? That's right they're outsourced and out of a job.

AI taking over means that there'll be more people with time on their hands for better or worse. These people need to be stimulated and to escape the harsh reality that they live in.

This is where the gamedev renaissance era starts. The demand for that stimulation only provided through porn and games (or both) will increase exponentially. The ones who stuck out and honed their GAMEDEV SKILLS will be rewarded handsomely. You have to think about this LONG TERM and never give up!

You can't go low-scope with games. You have to go all-in. If you try to launch a B game you will fail. You have to go for AAA.
>Gabe and Mike and I were meeting regularly and one of the things I told them was that the Games business was a hit-based business, where only the top 10 games made any real money. At a time when thousands of games were being introduced each year, it meant that Valve’s first game was going to be a hit or it wasn’t, and given the dynamics of the games industry, if the first game wasn’t a hit, there likely wouldn’t be a second Valve game. Gabe and Mike had been talking about trying to launch a B product, something that wasn’t a hit, but that would be successful enough to support the company as it established itself, and I knew and made clear that simply wouldn’t work.

You meet a beautiful woman with complicated name, she explains that unique letter formations have magical power, as with each phrase spoken premordial power is being freed and as such common names have no power. She then teaches you couple uncommon syllabes and you can 'cast' them on common words to give them power. Now your gameplay involves speaking with common women and casting new syllabes to hypnotize them into sexual deviants that gradually change their names. You can find women with uncommon syllabes in their names and learn them while also learning what kink this combination grants. With more syllabes you can twist common women into nymphomaniac slaves with the most uncommon names. You expand your vocabulary of powerful combinations and these modify women's appearance and desires - big boobs, aheagos, quick climaxes, fixation with fellatios, you name it.
Do it right and you have millions in your bank.

Update() happen whenever the graphic engine update. 60 FPS -> 60 Update() call per seconds. 3541FPS -> 3541 Update() call per seconds.
FixedUpdate() happen whenever the fuck the *physics* engine decide to update. In ideal condition it's just once every few frames, since the physics engine to run at a constant "framerate" unlike the graphics engine who tend to update as often as possible.

Most code should go in Update().
FixedUpdate() is reserved for shit that will interact directly with the physics engine. It's not mandatory tho, it's just to be sure that your physics calculations actually do something: no point recalculating an object's speed 240 time per seconds if the physics engine will only check it 30 times per seconds anyway.

Sadly I've found that's the only thing consistent among our type, we're totally inconsistent about our preferences. Let's compare notes like real perverts on the internet do because I have no fucking clue how to make a game that caters to onomatophiliacs if we all like different things. Met a Kaela Novacek once, she introduced herself with her full name in a thick Generic-Eastern-European accent and I damn near pissed myself. There's a bartender near me named Lyric Andova, which would be extraordinary if they were a woman rather than a large exceptionally-scary black man that looks like a fat 600lb Tommy Lister with the permanent Friday scowl pressed deeply into his pudding-boulder of a head; nice fella though, good bartender. My top 3 celebrity names: Dichen Lachman, Rosamund Pike, Ivana Milicevic. Tolkien's elvish names rock my socks, Arwen, Galadriel, Elara, Elenwe, Tinuviel, lost.

All us devs know by now that getting a degree in gamedev is utter bullshit and a waste of time and money but devs were never the market for gamedev tutorials or assets. The market was always targetting newbie devs and hobby devs.

I'm certain anon's game will have several hundreds of reviews so long as he achieves this quickly enough, it's not exactly the kinda game where he can drag out development like Project Zomboid. I can even see it hitting 1000+ reviews. Bocchi doubters in shambles. It's the first agdg game in a long time that's showing actual potential of breaching the 1000 review mark while being a new game as well rather than some 5 years in EA game.

Oh it's this guy I remember seeing his thumbnails on a few demo days. I take it he realized for feedback this place isn't really all that useful. He got a few comments on demo day but otherwise what's the point? You already know what you're doing with your project, if you can catch a bigger audience elsewhere to play your game, that's much better feedback than getting 10 comments once every 2/3 months.

Understandable if he left I somehow just don't have the time to play many demo day games. There are still game's from this last demo day that I haven't even gotten around to trying out including those I really want to try out.

Unironically they are paying a third party contractor to give them instructions on making a soulless click farm. Having a company shows that you have ambitions beyond working for an employer, which is a bad thing from the employer's point of view. Also having a company that failed shows you failed, which is also a bad thing from the employer's point of view.
Every year your don't work for an employer is a negative mark in your resume. Accumulate employment gaps at your peril.

This job sim game's aren't actually like real life. If trucking or working in a grocery store was like this, then I doubt many people would be disinclined to waging. The problem is dealing with other humans that are either on a power trip or have no manners. The game completely removes that from the equation. You think I'd have quit that job I had if you removed those two issues? The job sucked but that part of the equation makes it far worse. A game like this not only removes that but makes it feel like you're accomplishing something that would take years in real life. Oh wow I'm a millionaire after 1 in game year. Real life, more like after you waged 50 years as a cashier while living with mom and dad. Though I don't really play these games, just assuming the reasoning behind it with what I'd see it as from my pov.

nta but I think having a unique perspective is the true mark of a creative person.
Perhaps this has happened to you: someone mentions something about a thing you are familiar with that would have never crossed your mind in a million years. It's both new and relevant which are the conditions for creativity.
This can be seen if you ask someone to draw a well known thing like a building from memory. Their drawing will focus on whatever caught their attention or, in other words, their perspective.
Stardew Valley is like this, it makes some elements from Harvest Moon less noticeable while placing more attention on others. It's the result of a unique perspective on something that already exists.
>>
>>503529937
>the market changed a lot
The market is always changing but the most played games are still highly derivative.
>>
>>503527721
It's probably more accurate to say that people take less risk as they have more to lose rather than as they get older. Most people gain stuff over time and therefore have more they can lose. People who don't accumulate stuff will actually have less to lose as they get older and can take more risks. This may be why the most famous examples of people who "made it" at older ages tended to be considered total failures before they did.

If you're looking for financial success, you're far better off stealing ideas from existing games. I don't mean flavor-of-the-month thing like VS but look back at what players liked about games from 15-20 years ago and combine those features in appealing ways. I suppose that's creativity too, and a far more sustainable form than having to come up with a new YOMIH or Balatro every couple of years. No one can do that.

Why? $100k is so much you don't even need to become a gamedev, you already made it if you simply wage long enough. You don't even have to wage into your 60's when you're making that much under 25.

>>503520857
Ugh I remember seeing a vid just like this shilled to me. Pretty sure it was this one, I'm so tired of this clickbait "look at me i hacked my brain into falling for the trap of loving to code" as if it actually worked and the brain isn't going to realize you're trying to trick yourself kek. Alright boy's odds this guy never completes a successful game?

>>
>>503521198
woah i'm a brainlet and suck at both but coding is much easier than art. art doesn't have the do x and you get y result. sure sometimes code doesn't work as it claims ahem unity documentation utterly useless in some things. but art, wew it's not as simple as put pixel x, y, z into (0, 2), (0, 5), (1, 2) and behold you've got pixel gold. if art was that easy i could just do commissions with high prices and just like that i can subsist off commissions while neet devving at the same time.

It's comforting to know that even if I flop I can still have people post weird shit about my game

I want to get into modeling in blender but wondering how texturing works? Can I just paint on the 3d model with like a brush if I want to?

you can, but don't do that first, watch tutorials on texturing first.

You can use your real name and simply have the steam page with a made up username/company name that doesn't even exist or at least isn't incorporated. I'm not using my real name on the actual page shown to the masses.

i like it here. there's no reason to post my game on reddit. those people will offer cheap applause for them updoots. on twitter it is pointless since all i'd be getting as replies are other devs, it becomes useful when it's actual gamers and not other devs but at that point the people talking to me are fanboys and fangirls. that literally only leaves this place and few other places i will not entirely name.

>>503490678
now let's see it delete it's twitter account permanently, i want to see it live by its words.

new to gamedev?
I'll help you out:
you cannot use any game older than ~2019 as a good reference of the current market. Even then, there are trends from 1-2 years ago that have already died.

that's amazing, I've never known you can customize your page name.

I'm still starting with itch.io tho, you can link your credit card directly to it instead of going through payment platforms, fuck paypal, fuck swing. paypal already locked my account forever with my highschooler pocket money in it.

there are many ways. i would go with having inactive collision boxes and link them to a state machine that activates the collision boxes during their proper state

pixel art platformer is a stretch, that was a popular genre only when pixel art was the norm.
but if you and I had 3 years to make it, and you chose to go all out with innovation on 10 games while I decided to make a morrowindlike, chances are I'd be far more successful.

Lol, lmao
That's just a remind that after a flop 90% of agdg dev disappear and are never seen again.
>you now remember that game with spurdo main
>you now remember lil red
Never give up my ass

The only one that are still here after a flop are that frog shotacon dev and dungeon watchers dev. And even if they are persistent they don't wanna learn how to make a successful game
>>
>>503538654
