DCSS: where to insert lore messages

Orc:2 shops are the central strategic inflection point in the game. Therefore clearing Orc:2 is an accomplishment that should be rewarded with a lore popup marking the end of part I.

Why does Orc have so much gold? Despite the rough dirt suggestive of mining, orcs are not dwarves. They are raiders, not miners, and the racist cult of Beogh only exacerbates this. Many species of delver will take satisfaction in ending the orc scourge that plundered the countryside from the security of their dungeon fortress.

Lore popups can be triggered by picking up runes (or pseudo-runes if the branch lacks one). The latter may be disabled from autopickup for players uninterested in plot.

The second universal inflection point is the first entrance into a ziggurat. The save should occur prior to entering, so that one may reconfigure if needed. Reaching the top of the ziggurat should be rewarded with lore revealing backstory on the Orb's dark masters, with each successive zig cycle revealing more.

There is no reason for lore to remain consistent between races. The Dungeon obviously has interdimensional properties and plausibly spans worlds. This enhances replay value, encouraging exploration of all races. Lore should also vary by speed and completion to encourage different playstyles.

There is currently no intrinsic reward to collecting runes, beyond the minimum required to unlock gates. This can lead to players not even bothering to pick them up, which is obviously immersion breaking. Therefore each rune should give a small permanent bonus to a stat that fits the branch theme.

For example Lair should give two HP, Spider a little stealth, Orc one Strength, Elf one Int, etc.

Zigs are optional. By "universal" I meant that zigging is a similar stage for every race. Build paths "timelines" converge at Orc:2 and again at zig. For the intervening branches, the sequence varies.

One could make an argument that clearing Zot:5 should count as a save point, but I think some races prefer to delay Zot longer than others. It would amount to a save before the Orb run, which I think cheapens the tension too much.

Unrelated: maybe rune branches should give a stat point and non-rune branches a lesser boon such as a small amount of HP, MP, MR, stealth, etc.

Rescue operation did not go without unfortunate casualties
Some mutant woman (Apis) started fucking up the other survivors once they were let out of their cages and Charlene managed to kill her only after Apis killed 2 innocent people
For some reason they dont want to come out of the camp so i smashed my way in with the car, damaging it heavily in process
Sadly for me, these were women so i have 2 men and 2 women survivors. Sailor moon girls are gone, now we're just a band of survivors


Also, after giving ranged npcs the command to just go wild and don't aim they started to actually shoot and it's not like they're missing everything either, only like 1 out of 4/5 shots

Early game has gotten a lot more interesting in my opinion. 1-tile corridors are basically gone, and resting and berry spam got nerfed hard, so you have to be even wiser in positioning and more resourceful. Can't say much more than that since I play permadeath.

I unfortunately have to use debug to teleport my 2 melee NPCs because despite telling them to move into a certian position so they don't get fucking killed they just refuse to listen and charge into the enemy

The NPC needs to have the skills required for the construction recipe, as well as the necessary tools and materials either in his inventory, or within a few tiles of the construction site. You need to stay around and watch, if you walk too far the area he's in will be unloaded and there's no system in place to let him keep working like that.
NPCs also automatically assist you with all construction tasks and batch crafting, cutting down the required time. They still need the skills, though watching you work will train them.

I can't say I've gotten far as a permadeath player myself in the new patch but the difficulty doesn't bother me too much.
You can't position yourself behind a choke anymore but you can position yourself in certain ways that give you a slight upperhand, depending on how the enemies path towards you. It gets even more complicated if you have knockback/immobilize abilities and traps are involved.
They're been slowly tweaking certain mechanics to make the game overall a bit less brutal since the update, so I guess we'll see how it goes.

Take some time to explore, the innkeeper at the southern inn sells traps. Once you explore both the mill and the southern inn then you're generally level 2.

My melee characters get the best armor i have
My ranged characters just get helmets and kevlar vests along with minor protection like pads. Only Tawana has a survivor suit because im low on leather. I will fix that eventually
My character is running around with Kevlar vest, helmet+firefighter PBA mask/ballistic glasses (currently taken off) and rest is cosmetics because she's stylish and likes pretty clothes. Never engages in melee. She has Cindy and Clyde for that
Rest of the NPCs are Bunker dwellers. We're building a community here. If something bad happens to my main party i'll start recruiting people from the bunker or if i want to just change the party around
For now most people that stay in the bunker are survivorlets and would not make it outside in the wasteland or would have a hard time but they're still useful around here

the issue with the plate armor is that the coverage only works on 19/20 attacks, so you're vulnerable to ye olde peasant archer swarm strategy and can eventually get chipped down

the medieval weaponry is pretty universally godlike however
rapier, broadsword, longsword are simply incredible if you have their martial arts, and most of the other weapons are at least good
I haven't spent too much time messing with the non-sword weapons like the Lucerne Hammer (it swings too slow and I don't have the martial art for it)

In BN you could construct a grid connector and then attach the car to it with jumper cables to recharge it from building solar panels.

Night time is generally safer if you can see a little bit (not foggy, good moon), but if you carry a light you become a beacon. Zombie dogs can also sniff you out even if you think you've lost the zombies.
Fire is OP, just ignite some paper on the ground, stand next to it and 1v1 zombies, even if you miss they will burn and you wont.

It really sells fantasy of a class. It's not just small stat increase and equipment set like in crawl. When you pick Bulwark you are block of armor with a shield and skills translate to that. You can push it into antimagic or magic direction but at the end of the day feeling of being armored sword and board warrior stays there. There is also lot of theory crafting every class has a lot of skills and equipment is like in diablo2 where every piece has a lot of egos. So you can fine tune things to squeeze a lot of power out of every build.

Holistically, the ending of the game isn't that bad. But as an update, it doesn't fucking add anything. It quite literally adds a lore dump / conclusion to the story, and nothing else. No new dungeon, no enemies, no mutations. I really wonder why gamedev (well, software in general) ends up hitting some glacial paces towards the end. Tomb of the eaters is really cool, huge dungeon, and was added like half a decade ago. In the 5 years since, they've not even come close to adding anything as substantial.

With some more spoilery points below:
You finally ascend the spindle and get to see what is at top. After a few rooms, you enter a transit system which reveals a new, massive space platform with various structures, habitats, and decay. The "twist" is, you literally can't go to any of these places, and the few places you can go to are a couple rooms and just lead to one of the various endings. If it didn't have that map, I would feel significantly less bad, but as, it just feels like a massive chunk of cut content. Honestly, all 3 of the main CoQ dungeons are super memorable and engaging, and not sending the game off in a final massive dungeon feels really shitty. It could be a teaser for DLC as well (and honestly, I love CoQ and would gladly pay for that), but it just feels really shitty teasing DLC when the actual "final 1.0" update added basically nothing.

I think the lore conclusion is fine. I wish it had expanded on a few things, but CoQ was always a game that withheld more lore than it actually gives.

I think you basically have it. If you keep playing the story, you should encounter a 3rd floating slot.

Grinding up eater's nectar / metamorphic polygel is pretty straightforward, but not necessarily the fastest thing.

Getting double muscled would also go fucking crazy, but getting a specific mutation on true kin is pretty annoying and tedious.

The most successful and fun run i had in dda was spawning in the middle of a giant city (didnt change map settings, it was just big).
Then i was living on the 4th floor of an apartment making bombs and SUPER noise makers with 300 volume.
I set down the noise maker at night alongside a gasoline fire and watch everything BURN.
Eventually i escaped the city(came back though because it was home). Got a laser rifle from a science tower, killed a skeletal hulk and blew up a bandit fort.

How do i chase those highs again?

In FrogComposband I was grinding Castle 64 for loot, recalled to it, saw a group of Keeper of Secrets, thought they were too dangereous so immediately teleported, they followed me and killed in one turn. 600ish HP, 126 AC, 36 lvl monk died in a single turn. I'm seething

they further split (Ranged) Weapon Repair Kits into Laser, Rail and I think Microwave(?) Kits in Quasimorph, which is kinda shittier for my lazy ass
but then they added several properties to both Armors and then Materials to enhance upkeep, like Synthetic and Aramid
a bunch of consumables were added, I think cold statuses too with drugs that treat Hypothermia and Frostbite
new renderer looks very good though, and enemies properly show their current directive and if they noticed you or are investigating noise

Boy, you weren't kidding. I spent entirely too long preparing my roleplay playthrough for the ascent just for a few empty rooms and purple prose monologues. The worst kick in the dick was finding two weapons with unique mechanics, but only having a pair of half-hearted cherubs there to use them on.

Not sure I agree that the lore stuck the landing, but I agree that it withholds a lot. It just withhold enough that I can't put a finger on why it feels so empty.

Its morning of day 3 of me living in the top floor of an apartment with seemingly no safe way down.
I went out at night on day 1 to try burn some zombies, but 0.H changed fire and now it goes out faster (for the best, its still very strong). I got hurt very badly.
All surrounding areas look like picrel, and ground floor of the apartment is covered too.

Is my only hope to burn down a building at night? Are zombies attracted to light alone if i throw a glowstick out the window to give me an opening?

I've had fun with horse drawn carts in CDDA. iirc I was typically running in the high 20mph range. You can always slap on another engine too, but be careful about going too fast. If the horses can't keep up with the engine speed, they will get mulched by your car

What's your character like? If you are in decent shape and have some kind of weapon then you have plenty of options. For example slowly clearing out the building. First you clear out the hallways, then you clear out the rooms, and then bada boom you have yourself lots of food, lots of loot, and a decent base. I started out in an apartment in my current run, and was lucky enough to get wasps in the building that helped me to wipe out everything, after which it was fairly easy to wipe them out. But there is a stratagem I used there which might help you out here. If the apartment has a parking garage, you can lure zombies in there, easily have them lose sight of you, then scream to get them into the back of the place. From here you can either kite them out one by one, fighting them at your own pace, or just leave them in there and close the garage doors so they won't wander out. If you really don't want any risk of injury then I have one more option for you. First train up some throwing, then search some bedrooms or trashcans for a talking doll, disassemble some flashlights to get amplifiers, and get a solder which are fairly common in apartments for some reason so that you can make a noise emitter. Then at night use the fire escape, a great way of getting around the building in general, to get to the second floor activate your noise emitter and throw it as far as you can then bingo, zombies moving at least 30 tiles away from the building giving you plenty of room to escape. I started a new run with almost the same start as that, shattered sky challenge start.

I do have a soldering iron and solder, but i dont have electricity. There is a solar panel across the road, but i dont have bolt turning for it.

Apparently 0.H included damage for objects falling. Maybe i should just break a window, shout and throw out all the bookshelves and seats i find.

I cant move big stuff like bookshelves out the window, but 60 glass shards and 20 spoons do wonders when falling from 5 stories up.
I can slowly kill them this way, then come down at night to finish them off.

I think the old wiki showed them functioning the same way as any other engine when harnessed, with all the usual strength, load, whatever characteristics. You can always add more horses, but I usually found the space required to harness and shield them from attackers to get a bit unwieldy.

So i made a nailboard, dropped it, no substantial damage. I cant activeate/place it in open air either.
However, i can go to the north fire exit of the apartment where its quieter. I placed one down there and it killed like 6 feral humans. I've made 2 more boards and im going back to place more.
Throwing glass shards out of a window meta is gone, now traps are my new best friend.

I was thinking of putting them in chokepoints to deal with zombies filing in. You might not be able to get enough nails for that to work though, I just checked and a nailboard trap costs 20 nails and you don't get many by just bashing things.

Update, i have placed 6 nailboards in a zig zag pattern by a 2 wide chokepoint. it manages to get everything except the swat zombies. Night is still too dangerous to go out, as i wander the roads and im too injured to fight anything that jumps me before something else i didn't see comes up behind.

Update to my nail board gameplay, i've gone out at night to light a nearby crack house on fire, no loot of note lost. The smashes of the roof collapsing draw in the zombies and it should be hot enough to burn the corpses to ash.

I discovered the Youtube channel "Rogue Rat" recently and in his current CoQ run he accidentally broke an oath, freaking up a whole lot of faction relationships possibly because he auto-riffled through a unique creature that was considered as trash by the game, just after performing the water ritual. He managed to find a (blank?) shrodinger page that could correct this.

Feels like you mostly out of luck if you don't find such an item, some random NPC admired by the targeted faction or a love injector to try forcing a water ritual (what I will try to do next time at Bethesda Sussy with the trolls)
