It's a cheap move to advance the plot or character development at the cost of logical coherence. And of course, it's a disservice to those of us who appreciate the detail and lore of this series, this kind of thing feels like a slap in the face. It's as if the writers forgot that millions of people care about Metal Sonic, his legacy and what he represents in the Sonic series. And it's this kind of lame ass, hair brained writing that's made Western comics 5% of the market while manga is over 90% dominant.
