Finally finished the Kolosten chapter, and it left a mixed impression.The story was great. I liked how everyone finally came together to kick Otto's ass, everyone was at their peak performance, Durandal being Kiana's sister legitimately surprised me, and the final boss fight was really cool. The only things I didn't like were Sushang (has to be the most pointless character in the entire game), Mei helping Kiana through a magic Zoom call, and Kallen getting saved anyway. Overall, a solid story. Otto's 15-minute-long walk to the tree would've made Kojima proud.The gameplay was ass though. It felt like the developers looked at Genshin's huge success, went "hey, we can do cool stuff too!", and birthed the most boring fucking thing in the entire game. The sidequests are as numerous as they are braindead, the visuals look like a cheap PS2 game, the leveling system feels dumb and pointless until the last third, the enemies are weirdly tanky (making the sidequests even more of a chore) and the movement is complete jank (especially compared to the similar APHO, which plays smooth as butter). Thankfully, from what I've played so far, Elysium Everlasting felt like a big improvement.

Dang, the whole Elysian Realm storyline was really good. Almost all of the characters were interesting (except Kaplas, he was kinda dumb), the drama was solid (especially everything to do with Pardofelis), and the gameplay was very fun, both the Realm (it's fun to see the first iteration of what became a staple in all Mihoyo games since) and Elysium, which was a huge improvement over Kolosten. I also loved seeing how Elysia slowly wore down Mei's edgetard persona and made her act like a human again. Although now Elysia feels like the real key person in Mei's story, and not Kiana, whose relationship with Mei was never shown in such detail and intimacy (the St. Freya chapters were all kinda barebones in that regard, except the Nagazora breakup). Kiana now has to become the next Elysia for it all to make sense.The only two major setbacks were Miyuki Sawahiro popping out of existence at the worst time possible (although it made me check out the Chinese VO, which was neat), and the the translation being absolutely godawful. It was clearly translated by multiple lazy tards who didn't even bother communicating with each other, so there are issues like a thing being called different names in different places for no reason, typos in every other sentence, etc. Reading some of it was rough. I really expected things to get much better at this point (after all, other Hoyo games are translated perfectly fine), but no, it's just as shitty as it was in 2016.But overall, an incredibly solid effort. At first I wasn't sure about the entire story taking such a huge, long swerve, but it was worth it.

I want to rant a bit.Look I don't mind bringing Kiana back with a new battlesuit even if it's Chinese themed, mainly because she is my favorite character and it's been 2 damn years since her last battlesuit. I do also like the event.Still everything feels a retcon. 1 year ago we got the anime chapter which gave a "closure" to Kiana with a song asking "Will we ever meet again" and Kiana ending the song saying "We will definitely meet again". It was obvious that Kiana was coming back someday even before this song but still, it hasn't been even 1 year since part 2 started. It feels way too soon.Another thing is the "cutscenes" instead of the animated shorts. Hear me out, the cutscenes aren't bad, the animations for them are very good but still they lack a lot.They are mainly made using the game character models(for Vita VS Sparkle and Kiana's cutscenes the textures have been upgraded compared to Sena and Songque) and this can cause visual problems in some frames.The SFX for the last one was also very lacking. Except for the beginning, in the second half when Kiana plays the drums, we can't hear the drums being hit even though Kiana is strongly hitting them.Animation wise they are very good, no complains about this. I don't expect an animated short for an event but I don't feel like the last one was finished at all, mainly because of what I said about the sound effects and some frames showing part of Kiana's face and looking very weird. Are you telling me no one noticed that? Really?Oh one more thing about the last animation, look at the NPC's. There is 1 type of NPC for 300 characters at least. If you watch it only once there is no problem because it goes so fast that you can't see them but if you re-watch and pause, it feels wrong.Also for some reason Fu Hua Garuda has become Fu Hua's daily version of herself. I'm pretty sure this is because she doesn't have a "normal" new model and as I said the CGs are made using the character's game 3d models but still.

I do think there are ways to make everything more interactive if they make maps with every bridge and for example for the hyperion mhy could add "rooms" with each room being one thing(for example 1 room being full of pictures like Mario 64 and each picture being 1 chapter)but, another room for equipment, etc. This is just one of the ways I thought of and I thing it's still better than make the new players know "this icon does X, that icon does Y" - The old models are very outdated(characters the most but maps and landscapes too). I understand that mhy doesn't want to rework on them but this is the truth, HI3rd was their first 3d game so it's very normal that mhy has improved a lot a long the way but you can see the difference even between part 1 beginning and part 1 finale characters. And the ones that notice this the most are new players, who see that and lots of them think "this game is not for me" - The yapping at the beginning of part 2's first 3 chapters. This is very deadly.

The side effects of her abilities have dulled her taste senses so when she's sitting at a bar she's approached by a memokeeper who starts distracting Acheron with conversation while trying to peak at her memories. Acheron immediately grabs her wrist and is visibly angry. The memokeeper laughs and tries calm her down and reveals Kiana is alive. Acheron is shocked but then says "then my memory wasn't.. ". Memokeeper tells her Kiana isn't the same anymore and can do something about her memories and senses as they will get worse with time. She gives her the planet name and Acheron decides to journey there and find her. Maybe this explains why Swan was beat up because this has happened to Acheron before.

I just realized something. In retrospect, the reason why Mei's character development felt so shitty is one chapter in particular - the one with Owl and Ana. And I have a theory on how it happened.MHY wanted Mei to become an anti-hero who violently pushed Kiana away and needed to find her way back step by step. But the Chinese players must've started shitting on Mei for being a bitch, and the writers got spooked by that reaction (even though it should've been anticipated and welcomed). So they decided to get through Mei's "journey" ASAP, and squeezed it into a single chapter where Mei basically encounters her own mirror in Owl - an overprotective asshat who's ready to "become a sinner" for his Herrscher gf, which only gets both of them killed because Owl was deaf to Ana's wishes and blinded by his saviorfagging, so nothing of value was achieved. Mei looks at the corpses, silently goes "oh shit, he's literally me", and right in the next chapter, becomes Kiana's snarky (but totally trusting and loving) long-distance gf. And that's the shitty part - the story is so rushed, you'll blink and miss Mei's entire "character journey" from LotF to New Atra because it happens in, like, 5 minutes, and everything else instead focuses on Raven and Elysia's gang. All because someone in the writer's room couldn't handle Mei being controversial for 5 minutes.

I don't get why HI3 didn't use 2.0 as an opportunity for a proper overhaul of everything. Remove the decrepit systems (the low-res startup popups alone make the game feel ancient in hard-to-describe ways), simplify the grind, simplify the leveling, update the gacha system, trim the UI, tie the new story tighter to Star Rail for that audience to come over, give newcomers cool old S units for free (they're getting replaced entirely with 2.0 units anyway), optimize the controls, make modern console ports (especially the Switch, this is the one fucking Hoyo game that could handle it), make the 1.0 storyline easier to read by implementing the manga properly instead of sprinkling in old website links out of fucking order, update some of the oldest models and characters. Then relaunch the game, calling it something like Honkai Impact 3rd Reborn, and rake in the cash.Instead, Part 2 somehow only makes things worse for the newcomers by dumping itself on them from the start while they're still untangling eight years of legacy crap, coded like the finest Italian spaghetti.
