A person can't handle everything by themselves and when faced with grief, some people just give up and abandon themselves in the process. It's a very 'human' trait, in a game where everyone just 'sucks it up and moves foward', he's the one that couldn't do so and simply wanted to die because everything in the world was too heavy to deal with. It's pathetic cowardice yes, but also still sympathetic and does make me feel bad for him. Whether or not it was justified for him to cave in to his fears, and let the kingdom collapse because of his depression, it's a different thing. But it adds layers to his character that I find compelling

Custom encounters using empty slots seem to be working Ultimately all I had to do to get this working was stick all the same functions I was using to call battles in field scripts in the Plateau save point menu and use that while in fast battle mode instead, then there were 0 crashes. There's this dumb adachi themed mod menu hijacking the same interaction point that has something like this in it but the function calls in that one are wrong and will never load a battle because the discorders that made it never bothered to test it.

There's a number of test encounters that still work as well that use the grand cathedral dark room as the arena. This is actually the "default", like what would happen if you didn't specify an encounter map for an encounter in P5's encounter table. Some test encounters insta-crash the game though, I think it's because of the encounter flags that are set for them. This was something that made P5 very crash happy too

I think I understand however why I never got the royal academy to load. It looks like the map used in the cutscenes for Rella's heel turn is the same one used in the actual fight with Rella and Sogne. I was able to confirm the map ID for the academy is 414, which was a map that gave me an instant crash when I tried to visit it independently ingame. in P5 this was generally not a problem and you could run around all the battle maps with no collision, but I was never able to get a single map used only in a fight to load at any point in this game. It follows that a lot of those crashes I ran into were for map IDs dedicated to battle arenas that Metaphor doesn't have any handling for.
