That’s awesome! The puzzle grind is such a great way to improve — and hitting 1800 is already a huge accomplishment! Getting to 2000 will definitely take some focused effort, but I’m sure you’ve got the dedication to make it happen.

Are you focusing on any specific type of puzzle (tactics, endgames, etc.) to push your rating higher? Or just trying to tackle as many as you can to get those pattern recognitions locked in? Would love to hear how you're approaching it! Keep up the great work!

I have obtained an Esserman ball. Evidently the inflation process for these requires a 24 hour stretch period before completing inflation to the full dimensions. I have inflated to 60cm and will blow it out to the fuil 75cm tomorrow evening.

This evening I will play blitz in my normal chair. I can feel how suboptimal this seating position is. The ball is in the periphery of my view. "soon" it says.

>>
>>520225131
There are specific tricks that you can use for king and pawn that take away a lot of the work of having to calculate everything manually. Things like the rule of the square, critical squares for blocked pawns, that one thing where pawns a couple files apart can "protect" each other by threatening promotion, etc. It's been a while so i don't really remember much, but check out the chapter 4 of the Soviet Chess Primer. It focuses specifically on this and it's incredibly useful

That was me, yeah I finished it long ago, for all my autistic ranting about some solutions it was a good book if a bit on the easy side, I still have "combinational motifs" by blokh on my desktop since december but I haven't touched it yet cause I wanted to focus on the weakest parts of my game first so for now I'm just lazily doing warm up puzzles on lichess
meanwhile I've read simple chess and I just finished the sixth chapter of silman's endgame course which was already too much for me so I'm done with it for the foreseeable future, I found both good and useful

just played some clown in 10+0 who played 90% of moves in less than 2 seconds and his longest think the entire game was 12 seconds, I looked at two of his other games and they were the same just blitz out random threats and hope to win on time, he's not even a blitz/bullet main he plays mostly rapid and his rating is around 1950.scam so not total shitter territory
I'm so irrationally angry that he almost got a draw out of me that I don't even feel like playing anymore, I really need to quit 10+0 it's a degenerate time control

They all behave the same way too: blitz out the entire game making shitty but not terrible moves so that I get a material advantage while they get a time advantage, then continue playing hope chess as quickly as possible in the hopes that I'll blunder something under time pressure, and finally resign a few moves before checkmate because their egos can't handle it.
I make sure to trash talk those subhuman gay retards.

it was probably the best way for him to play a large amount of games against various opponents. if he was alive today, he would be like "oh wow, i just play the move and the opponent replies instantly, i don't even have to wait a week between moves, holy shit the future is amazing".
>>
I'm stuck bouncing between 1850 and 1950 lichess. I mainly play 3+0 but I really want to push to 2000.

Like what can I do to get that final push? I always heard tactics do puzzles but I often see people with a puzzle rating of 3000 and Elo of 1200. I've gotten to 1900ish doing minimal puzzles

Should I study a chess book, switch to 10+0 for a while, or something else? My opening theory is decent I only have trouble when they play something like the hippo, or any passive opening. My highest win rate opening defending against gambits by not only taking the pawn but then keeping it.

I've sometimes thought it would be really fun for the refutation to automatically be played out in puzzles if you get it wrong.
So you play the move you calculated for 10 minutes and the computer literally mates you (or takes a hanging piece, plays a resourceful defense, etc.)

Two knights defense. If they go knight attack (Ng5) you play the normal gambit line. If they play d3 and O-O, you can play h6 and g5. This is all sound and played by masters.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 (4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Na5 6. Bb5+ c6 7. dxc6 bxc6) 4... h6 5. O-O d6 6. c3 g5
>>
>>520328207
I only do that against the Reti (kidding).
>>520328254
That h6 then g5 thing looks good. It could be a good switch up since I don't usually move kingside pawns that early unless necessity calls for it.

I’m trying to learn the English so didn’t go easy and tried to play the best moves. He blundered early of course so the game itself is not very interesting but the mate at the end was nasty.

That's a great idea. I think I would like that as a toggle option. Sometimes if I get a puzzle wrong I want to try to figure out why my move doesn't work first. Other times my reaction is just "WTF WHY DOESN'T THAT WORK?" and angrily turn on engine to see why.
>>
>>520337735
>trying to play the best moves is disrespectful
I have to disagree on this one
>>
>>520351127
But what is the best move if you're playing someone bad. If a win is 1, then any good move is 1. So the best move is the 1 that makes your opponent not feel bad about himself.
>>
>>520351548
Never play intentionally shitty against a weaker player. You can agree on piece odds or time odds before the game if you want to tilt it for competitive parity. When you play shitty it puts the other player in a lose/lose situation. If they win, they only won because you let them. If they lose, they lost to you playing like an egotistical jackass (even if that wasn't the intent). Only do this if you dislike the person and want to insult them.
>>
>>520351762
No, you're pushing it to the extreme. You can play well and win, but you should also be aware of your opponent's feelings.
>>
>>520352079
I have been in this situation a few times with family and friends. Maybe it takes someone with better social skills than me to manage this nuance. Whenever I try to play a little worse on purpose it comes off as arrogant.
>>
>>520351548
Not playing a beautiful mate because you think it would be 'disrespectful' is an insult to the game of chess, I simply can't endorse it.
You think Morphy would ever play for a prosaic win against a weak player because he didn't want to offend his opponent? Not a chance. NNs make their greatest contributions to chess by having brutal tactics inflicted upon them

I understand why Esserman bounces now. There is no need to bounce when sitting on these pilates balls. You can balance them easily and sit stationary. However, when there is distraction or any kind of focused concentration, the ankles start flexing and now you are in bounce mode. It's almost entirely involuntary.
>>
>>520366253

Pawns in the center (e5 prioritized, it's harder to get in if you miss the chance), kingside knight out. Most importantly: if e4 has been played, Bc5. Otherwise, that bishop always goes on d6 aimed straight at g3 ready to execute something like this if the chance arises >>520282481. Offbeat passive players tend to not have a good understanding of the "never play f3" principle, so this gets me some pretty brutal early wins very often. And if g3 i just chuck my h-pawn at them going for the kill straight away.

All a passive player wants is for you to go for some inoffensive system that allows them comfy, thoughtless development. To take advantage of this, you should be developing every piece already making preparations for an early attack. Even if he's careful and doesn't blunder into it, he'll likely have to make concessions to avoid being crushed out of the opening and you will net a nice advantage.

As the other anons say, two knights. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.O-O Bc5 7.Re1 O-O 8.Nxe5 Qh4 is a nice line against 4.d3, and if they don't try to take your e pawn you can often go for a setup involving Be6, f6, Qd7, long castles and try to pawn storm them.

>>
>>520420176
problem saar?
>>
>>520420895
No the saving grace of the women's wcc is they aren't as consistent with the slurping. Saving grace for entertainment value. There are often a ton of decisive games specifically because they are statistically more likely statistically -according to several decades of data- to make one move blunders like Wenjun did in this one.
>>
>>520423019
You say this as if the last three open world championships didn't involve shoitloads of blunders. Maybe the women do it a bit more, but the men are hardly playing like engines.

Is the player base on .com better than lichess? I get fucking bodied on .com compared to lichess. My rating is much higher on lichess while playing the exact same format on both (10 minute rapid). I do notice that I get hit with traps all day on .com that I am too peabrained to avoid I guess. More cheaters is a response someone could make, but I've never had points refunded.

It's just due to the differences between the sites in terms of how the rating calculation is done. They use slightly different systems and starting rating for new accounts.

>>
>>520494586
Don't think i'm the guy you're talking about but i'll give you some helpful resources.

This video is long but very good for getting started. Works for all chess skill levels.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK9eXu7RmdI
After that, you can train your blindfold skills more by playing against the computer right here. (Very important: go to settings and set "enter moves by keyboard" to yes, otherwise the buttons will spoil you on available options which is not very good)
https://chessinsights.org/blindfold/

Practice often and you'll slowly start getting better and more accurate at visualization. This will give you incredible gains in calculation skills even in your normal games. I don't recommend playing more than one blindfold game a day though, it is INCREDIBLY mentally taxing and you might end up burning out and giving up like i did.
>>
>>520503878
can i play bullet tho
>>
https://lichess.org/training/RjTL2
the puzzle itself is nothing special but I find it so cool that at the end the engine is like "keep your shitty bishop I'll just play g4 g5 g6 and there is nothing you can do about it"
>>
>>520507515
I should have specified I mean after 33 qc2
>>
>>520507240
No, bullet should be avoided completely because it gives you brainfog in regards to calculating and visualizing, as it conditions you against the act of stopping to think. Blitz is fine as you'll still be having plenty of quick thinks during your games which will work out your "calculation muscles" so to speak. Don't play while tilted though. If you find yourself booleting through a bunch of 3+0 games without giving a fuck, stop and go do something else until your mind is clear.

another unremarkable puzzle but it's really weird how this ends a move to early
my understanding is lichess puzzles only end when the side you are playing as would have more than one winning move regardless of what the opponent does but in this case after 57. c5, b3 is the only winning move so it should be where the puzzle ends, right?

official reason he gave was "personal reasons", but according to Norwegian TV 2:

it's probably a coincidence and tabloid is trying to stir shit for drama. i'm thinking either they didn't let him bring his coach and camera crew because of the anti-cheat measures, or he actually had a personal reason like death in the family. idk, time will tell...

In Fischer Random I always feel like I don’t have a single clue what I’m doing in the opening but when I do a computer analysis, the engine ends up liking my moves anyways.

does anyone care to share what their thought process is during the opening phase of a fischer random game?

I may push a pawn if the queen or a rook is supporting it and place a knight on a square that defends the pawn. The bishops are often placed very awkwardly and it makes developing them not clear.

Is it possible for an adult starter to reach 2150-2200 FIDE? That’s all you would need for a Finnish Chessmaster title, but I should probably just give it up now before I go insane at whatever the ceiling for me is
>>
>>520669632
just be yourself
>>
>>520669632
extremely unlikely, unless you've had some experience in other similar board games as a child. almost all adult starters plateau at 2000 FIDE, see Hanging Pawns as a prototypical example. he has a lot of knowledge and continues to grow in that area, but he still misses 2 move tactics and blunders when he isn't thinking consciously. it seems like after a certain age, you just can't grow your intuition and everything else you build on top of it, all the opening and positional knowledge, will have a natural ceiling.

some say you can avoid this by starting with 100k bullet games to build that intuitive foundation, but the jury is still out on that.

Play a lot of tournaments OTB and see online as your playground for improvement. I don't promise anything, but at least you can get good. Also, hire a coach on Lichess (prices vary) and let them tell you your mistakes and how to fix it... generally they help you with opening/errors in one's mental process, etc... have you ever played OTB?

I used to play as a kid (I considered myself fortunate if I went 3 or 3.5 out of 5 in a tournament), went to a chess club where I learned basic opening principles and how to back rank mate and such. I read Bruce Pandolfini's Chess Complete once or twice a long time ago.

I get really frustrated and angry when my opponents fall for a cheap tactic and then I get caught on my backfoot trying to defend against some really strong counterplay. It doesn't feel like the competition should be this fierce at this rank but maybe I'm just retarded.

same reason the soviet used to be so good, state founding plus the game is super popular there and taught in school so any talented kid gets found and supported right away, indians have much lower average iq than soviet obviously but there are some many of them it doesn't matter
also pro chess player is a great career prospect for third world shitholes, while firstworlders with the skill set and work ethic to be super gms can make much more money in other fields

4-500 elos can barely play the game, nevermind purposefully do a tactic

This is the issue with the entire thesis of the 'habits' training philosophy. The goal is to gain meaningless points on the computer screen when the real goal should be to learn chess. This is the problem with zoomers, instant gratification without any real work. They don't want to learn chess, they want to watch the stupid number on the screen go up. This is also why they cheat. Theres just this constant embellishment of the complexity of chess like its this intangible megalithic amalgamation of incomprehensible mechanics and strategy when in reality its just not. A 500 elo player looking for a fork or skewer is not going to turn their brain into liquid, it is entirely feasible and reasonable to prescribe.

it's weird that people act as though 500/600 isn't a rating milestone that an absolute beginner would demolish in their first week of playing just by becoming comfortable with how the pieces move
Targeting improvement videos like 'habits' to that range just seems a little strange. Somewhere from 800-1000 would make more sense as a starting point.

Hey I've been bitten by the chess bug and want to get better
Earlier last year I was randomly challenged to chess by a colleague who floored me
Since then I've beaten a good chunk of everyone in my office - but I'm only sitting at 550 elo on chess.com
I only know one opening, the London and tend to lose every black game
I'm at 1400 - 1500 rating at puzzles
And I can beat any sub 1000 but but struggle once they get to 1250

What's bothering me is when I review my games the 500 people I'm playing against seem to be pulling 1500 moves
How do I improve? Any suggestions?

Do tactics. Lots and lots of tactics. Also play longer games(10+5 and above) and analyze after, both the wins and the losses. It's literally all you need to reach around 1800
Also drop the London, it's shit

chess.scam bots are insanely overrated by design, also playing them hurts your chess
don't do it
> pulling 1500 moves
assuming you mean the "game rating" thing in the game review those numbers are meaningless and also inflated by design pay no mind to it
>How do I improve?
everything the other anon said+ lookup opening principles and stick to them, plus learn basic endgames at least how to mate with king and rook and the basics of king and pawn vs king endgames, for puzzles uses chess tempo or pirate a tactics book for beginners never guess force yourself to calculate to the end
if you feel like putting some effort I heard good thing about "play winning chess" by Seirawan or if you realy want to try hard read the soviet chess primer
this play list might also help
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao9iOeK_jvU&list=PLIoUX4ry8XlvbHprhXtCjW4Ins4oIIaiK
but really the most important thing at that rating is just not hanging stuff and taking what your opponent hangs, tactics should help with that, also try to do a checklist of the possible checks, captures and threats for both sides before moving
>>
>>520750257
i'm guessing he will wait for all the influencers to say its because of cheating and then he will come with the real reason to ""own"" them

Hans Bros what has happened to us :(
>>
Hello /chess/, >>>/vg/vrg/ tourist here
Reminder that over there we are regularly playing chess in vrchat and that next session is today at 21:00CEST/19:00UTC (~2h from now)
We'll play 1h of chess before switching to mahjong, but people who wants to stay for chess can keep the instance alive if they want to.
> I don't have VR and what's the point?
You can play without vr as well, we use vrchat which also have a non-vr client. The main appeal is to play with different people in a virtual environment, which means you can talk (or type if you don't want to use a mic), spectate and move from table to table.
The table implementation also have (in-game) replay, so you can analyze the game afterward with your opponent.
> What do I need to be able to join?
Basically to make a vrchat account and to have the game started (you can just install it from steam), I recommend to make a direct vrchat account rather than using your steam account for in-game log in as it makes joining easier.
I will post an instance link when the event starts, while logged in the vrchat website you can click on "invite me" and you will get a notification in-game to join the instance.
Besides maybe getting familiar with the controls you don't need anything else really
> How do we play? (time settings, ...)
We usually play with 10min +5sec, but it's up to the player to set it up. The timer reaching 0 says "gg" but doesn't force to end the game, so you can agree to ignore the timer if you prefer
> What's the skill level?
According to the other host the average /vrg/ chess skill ranges from 800 to 1500 chess.com
> NA hours when?
NA chess instances are on 10pm EST on Wednesdays

My apologies, I didn’t mean to be too harsh on you. I simply hold a grudge against Magnus for being such a normie.

I publicly hold certain politically correct views but I do this to blend in with society, who knows if it’s the same with him.

All I’m saying is that if he’s going to publicly criticize Russia and Belarus why has he not said a single word about Israel?

Of course, I need to take a more level headed approach and understand the fact that Magnus Carlsen is a millionaire and he has financial interests to protect. I would most likely do the same thing in his position.

https://youtube.com/shorts/WrI9_9z85RY?si=L0T3ti149Sx_Pd9M

Here is what I was referencing. of course he is such a smug asshole about it, even though he doesn’t have the slightest clue regarding the nuances of geopolitics and the current war in Ukraine.

The Freestyle Chess logo features two knights with wings, symbolizing freedom and creativity. The knights are designed to resemble a winged lion, which historically represents dominion and power. This imagery reflects the essence of Freestyle Chess, also known as Chess960 or Fischer Random, where the starting positions of the pieces are randomized to encourage creative play and reduce the reliance on memorized opening theory1.

The designer of the Freestyle Chess logo is not explicitly mentioned in the available information.

Gukesh jeeted across the call centre stinkily, his eighteen-year-old grandmaster mind swapping chess moves for phone scams, spinning tales of fake viruses to gullible callers—“Just send $200, sir, and I’ll fix it”—all to fund his bizarre quest for cow dung, a Tamil Nadu superstition promising luck when burned, which he needed for a looming chess tournament since Chennai’s streets offered no sacred cows, though the outskirts did for a price; by week’s end, he’d hustled enough cash to trade for a sack of fresh dung, lit it in his backyard with a cough and a grin as the smoke rose like a prayer, and at the tournament, he swore he smelled its faint whiff while crushing opponents move by move—the Russian prodigy, then the rest—until the title was his, leaving the crowd cheering and clueless about the strange mix of deceit and dung that fueled his triumph, a secret he’d never spill

Are you retarded? None of these are "rich" kids or from "developed" areas. They just don't suffer from zinc deficiency, fluoride contamination, lead contamination, or high levels of inbreeding like the samples Richard Lynn picked to calculate Indian IQ.
The first study was literally done on a village in Lucknow district.
The second study was conducted in Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh, the second most backward state in India.
The third study focused explicitly on families earning less than 6500 INR (141.45 USD) per month in Chennai.
The fourth study is the only one measuring IQ among urban, middle-class Indians.
The fifth study again used village kids from Laxmisagar in West Bengal.

>This is Fujii and Nagase's fourth time meeting in a title match
correction: it's actually their fifth.

The opening was bishop exchange. As per usual in this opening, both players seem to be pretty booked up (they've already played over 30 moves). Nagase played a variation with a knight sacrifice on 53, that both disrupted the pieces in Fujii's camp and allowed him to make a promoted bishop. Fujii himself played a similar line recently as sente against Yasuhiro Masuda in game three of the Kio title match (that game ended in a repetition draw).

If you think that Bobby or commies back then learned runes to read books then holy shit you kids are fucking retarded… he was merely using the notation which would be in English, then all you gotta learn is do they use a word starting with ‘T’ for bishop? Then it’s Tg7… so hard!

And if you think Russian players use runes on their notation then holy shit again please enter reality lol. Have you not heard a Russian use English proper nouns while talking?

my guess is that it's because the game had reached a point where very few of black's moves would've been bad, so the difference between mate and just having a massive -8 advantage isn't considered to be that big of a deal by stockfish

comparatively some games you might have a mate and if you miss that mate you're fucked, so that would prompt the fish to yell

Hello future grandmasters. Don't listen to the media lies, I am alive and I did not resign because of the new security measures. That's ridiculous. I was in a bootcamp working together with Kramnik to get to the next level on the road to world champion. In the middle of it I realized that I didn't want to take a break to play some silly tournament in France so I continued working for 12+ hours a day on my chess and I will be back soon. My apologies to Buettner on not calling but I was simply too busy with my chess. If he truly loves the game as he says he does, then he should understand. I had my assistant write up the email and I was in a complete social media detox so I didn't see all the news and speculation until now.
