I'm gonna be honest - along with OMORI pressuring the player into choosing the good ending lest Sunny kills himself, the whole DUET cutscene doesn't strike me as anything but very blatant emotional manipulation either. Every mention of it I saw was followed by fans talking at length about how thoroughly devastated they were left by that moment, but if you look past the Feels and focus on the Reals, what is there to be devastated about, really?The (supposed) purpose of the cutscene is to show Sunny placating his depression by recalling the good times he had with Mari and his friends... except that is exactly what he's been doing via Basil's photo album throughout the entire game. That's what Memory Lane, which you have to go through right before the final boss, was there for. And just like the aforementioned two, the good times showcased in DUET are glurgy, meaningless fluff.

Because we all know that severe depression can be treated by thinking happy thoughts, right? tfw the powerpoint slideshow was so cringe that even the depression decided to peace outMaybe I wouldn't have been as harsh if the story had Mari kill herself instead of it being a cover-up for manslaughter. Maybe then I'd have been able to see the tragedy. But given the context of the plot twist, all I can see is a coward and a liar soothing his well-earned guilt over committing a serious crime and lying about it in the most laughably melodramatic fashion possible.

OMORI in particular is heavily dependant on your feelings. Omocat even said it themselves, that feels had a precedence over reals. The story is as solid as a wet gauze, but it tries every trick in the book to pull at your heartstrings, with an easily #relatable character, different kinds of "emotional" music (from the scary to the supposedly touching), and a morality so protagonist-centered it pretty much blinds you. I've seen OMORI fans defend the game, and their favorite argument is to say, more or less, that they relate to Sunny, that the story resonated with their circumstances, that they cried so hard at the final scene because of the feelsy music that is supposed to be cathartic. Add an allegedly deep theme like "is it okay for a killer to forgive himself if he feels really really really really really sad about it?", and there you have it. If the game manages to hit you in your emotions and empathy, you're sold.But if you fail to connect with Little Mister Killer, well. The story no longer offers you any appeal, and you're left scratching your head about the logistics of the twist and how cruel the narrative is towards anyone who isn't Sunny.But yes, obviously, no one wants to write a bad story. Omocat didn't want to write a story that encouraged you to run away from the consequences of your terrible actions that traumatized everyone around you because feeling sad is enough of a punishment. But She did. Because she is a hack who are more concerned about huffing her own farts than actually thinking about what they're saying.

When Sunny wakes up in the morning, Hero reveals that he completed all of the former’s chores on the list his mom left for him even though Sunny himself never asked him to do that. For the record, Sunny’s chores take him three days if he chooses to stay inside on the first day, yet Hero somehow finished them all before Sunny even woke up. Because Hero is just that perfect and awesomesauce, igNot only this, but the game has this tendency to show that friends should help each other… by having friends doing things for others without permission. Kel forces Sunny to stay at Basil’s. Hero does Sunny’s chores for him. The gang decides that Basil just needs his friends by his side while he’s crying in the bathroom because his grandma died (which you’ve explained in detail why it’s a horrid breach of agency). I don’t like this. Friends helping friends in need is one thing, but this is barging into other people’s privacy and boundaries, and we’re meant to see it as cute and proof that they have such a strong bond. It doesn’t help that these people haven’t been close in four years, and evidence suggest that they don’t even trust each other that much (Basil and Aubrey).
So when you lose the fight with Omori, you will be given a choice whether to "continue" or not. This is the choice prompt that will determine the ending you get.Choosing to not continue will lead to Sunny letting his depression take control of him and throwing himself off the hospital's roof, which is the game's bad ending. Horribly inappropriate music choice and the hilarity of Sunny falling for two minutes aside, the game expects you to take his suicide seriously even though the very act of suicide has been treated as a harmless gameplay mechanic required for story progression (Omori has to stab himself in the gut to wake Sunny up and escape certain areas in Black Space) up until this point. Not only that, but this is the ending you get if you agree with Omori's viewpoint that Sunny is irredeemable. The game esseintially pressures you into choosing the true ending - you must forgive Sunny for his crime or else he's going to kill himself out of guilt, and you wouldn't want a little boy to kill himself, would you? You're not a remorseless monster like that, are you? It's emotional manipulation so blatant I'm astounded that people consider it competent writing

I think what sets JatPM’s execution of the “kid uses dream world to hide from his problems” premise apart from OMORI’s - and arguably makes it better - boils down to three things in particular:1) The game’s completely upfront it’s all a dream. It’s stated as such on the game’s Steam page lol. It doesn’t try to pull out the rug from under you for a cheap “Gotcha!” by making you think it’s an ordinary RPG and then thrusting you into a different setting after the first 10 minutes, which leads me to the second point2) It’s all a dream - JatPM doesn’t oscillate between two wildly different settings the way OMORI does. What brief glimpses of Jimmy’s IRL predicament and his family’s reactions to it we see are filtered through his dream world (e.g. Jimmy’s hospital room being seen through a telescope in Central Hub near the end of the game, the Nexus Point locations)3) Finally, the aforementioned predicament is a lot more believable than Sunny’s. I don’t know about y’all but I found the story of a kid struggling to accept he’s about to die of cancer and his family grieving his impending death to be considerably more compelling than the story of a kid who threw a tantrum, killed his sister and then destroyed his friend group by lying about it to save his own ass
