Gear has a compounding effect as it let you get more loot faster and get to better loot areas sooner. Also your gear always maintains some value when you get an upgrade so for example going from a 1 div amulet to a 3 div amulet in reality is only 2 div cost when you have sold it off.

My only real grip with the game is leveling through the campaign. There's no good reason why every mob needs to have max movement speed and just molest you the moment you enter their los and then if you happen to die it all respawns. Everything else suffers because of this since there's no way to deal with it besides grinding so you can get better gear to level your next character.

Half the zones that I habitually leap through in PoE 2, I do so because the mobs are annoying fast fuckers that swarm you if you stop. One solution is not stop. They'll slow themselves down with their pathing and eventually they'll get caught up by map chokepoints and other mobs.If keeping players from skipping monsters was a real concern then stuff like Leap Slam and Disengage wouldn't exist.
