Can anyone explain the point of this?
Why would I want to add player slots to my game. For your family members to play on the same console? That doesn't happy anymore, right
>>
>>521234110
It does, poor families will often share a console and get more hours per game than well off families. It's worth adding if you're making a family safe game but if you're putting gore and sex in then skip it because that's probably an adult only thing.

Careful with making useful systems diegetic. The main menu of a video game is usually separated clearly from its running suspension of disbelief.

>the smart posters realized gamedev is a waste of time and went on to go do something else with their lives
The smart posters left, and anyone not smart is here. Got it.
>the remaining posters are delusional retards with rotten brains
So me and you are both delusional retards with rotten brains, because were are both here.
>making a (good) game takes a lot of time and effort, and for very little reward, often zero money and excessively negative reviews
No arguments here. It's funny people here constantly complain about the work they choose to do. Did anyone here know what they were signing up for when they started?
>only unemployed degenerates and autistic third worlders have stuck around ever since valve changed the promotional algorithm and forced indie devs to actually market their games individually instead of just relying on steam to give them all the free promotion they needed
So everyone who is here is an unemployed degenerate, or living in a third world country. Interestingly enough, you are here making posts.
>gamedev is a hobby for strange isolated autistic degenerates, and a business for corportate psychopaths, hence the namefag discord freaks, or the skinnerbox dopamine slop marketing enthusiast freaks
Schizo babble, but sure.
>nobody inbetween these categories sticks around
Nobody her is not in the above categories.

So this poster is a isolated autistic degenerate, delusional retard with a rotten brain, who is unemployed, living in a third world country, namefags from discord, and only produces dopamine skinnerbox slop games for the highest chance of success in marketing.

I've wanted to make a very small scale text based rpg as a side project for a while. I'm aware of both Twine and Ren'py being incredibly beginner friendly but how often 99.99% of games made with either look exactly the same (I know you can go out of your way to adjust general ui and people just don't bother) really bothers me. Am I better off attempting to learn Unity/Godot rather than these more focused tools when my main issue is basically just gui autism?
>>
>>521238236
Learning, ideaguying, and prototyping can be fun. Production work on a high quality game that people actually want to play is not inherently fun. It's hard work. If you're still having fun, that just means you're not yet working hard enough on something complex enough.

if you have a car, get a job delivering pizzas, especially if you're in a decently populated area.
Don't work at a chain store like Dominos or whatever, do a local place that's a little bit more expensive than other pizza places in your area

Then try and work on weekends as much as possible. I make around $150-200 on Friday nights, and around $400 throughout the week just on tips. It's not bad considering I only do that for 20 hours each week, so it's not even close to full time.

>But what if you end up having to deliver to some dangerous neighborhood or place with pitbulls?
Pick a place in a good area. The usual suspects don't tip anyway, so you'd be wasting your time working in a ghetto area.
Also skip college towns and places with old people as populations.

Ideal area for pizza is a white middle class area with lots of stay at home moms, and grandma's who babysit their grandkids.
My best tips are on Friday nights from drunk wine aunts. One lady gives me $20 each time I deliver to her.
It's always cool cus she looks like pic rel and she calls me "hun" or "sweetie"

basically, if you live in an area where the middle aged women look like this lady, then you'll get good tips.
If you don't, then it's really hit or miss (I also delivered pizza during college and didn't make that much money)

I build a networked inventory from the ground up, actually two one server authoritative and one client, it was not easy for me (avg retard who can't write a single line of lua) splitting, stacks, dropping, pickup, chests inv, scene transitions, persistent saving, dropping bags with stuff inside and having other players pick it up, and then I realized I forgot to test with two devices, so when I thought it was working perfectly It was broken for everyone else.

hi new to this board and thread and I hope this is the right place to ask & talk about making games:
ik how to do basic game coding, very basic not anything big. however, i am really good at making plots and coming up with ideas a lot. and i had this idea running through my mind and now i really want to make it come alive. but the idea I have is about an indie eerie/psychological horror game, pixelated style where you play as a child, trying to solve the disappearance of some girls in town. there’ll be multiple endings as well.
i want to make it a game where you’re in the mind and eyes of a child (what would a child really do?), struggling with grief, that leaves an impression, and will emotionally wreck you (somewhat). would anyone play a game like that?
I wanna find people that want to contribute with it too and help or at least run it more by someone, but idk where to find such people

But either case, you can just open up the project manager window and "Run" games from there
Debugging godotsteam is more complicated, though, since you'll need a steam account for each player you want to test with. You'll likely need two computers (I have a laptop), another steam account, a store page for your game, and the ability to add playtesters via steam keys.
Then, you use something like SyncThing to keep the projects synced as you make changes on your main computer (shouts out to ivy sly)
It's a pain in the ass but worth it. Godotsteam allows you to totally avoid port forwarding or anything
>>
>>521278957
>Then, you use something like SyncThing to keep the projects synced as you make changes on your main computer (shouts out to ivy sly)
...why not just have a git? Yeah multiple system testing can be annoying, but it's also like extremely easy and basic to setup. I have 3 different systems I test on and both windows 10 and 11 just for myself and my partner has 2 machines as well.

Because git requires you to add->commit->push every single time whereas syncthing allows for synchronous changes, you just refresh your main ide (keeping the other build in project manager mode so you're not editing code) and it immediately makes the changes
>>521279650
Godot steam essentially wrapperizes the events from the steam api (connected to game, get game list, receive friend invite, connect to game etc.) into godot signals. You then have a working gd script file that reads all the signals and from there you can do what you want with them.
In my case, I then have a network controller that is basically a signal bible that actually communicates with the game, so:
Steam API -> steam.gd (godotsteam) -> network.gd -> actual game state
You can skip the network.gd part but I've found the steam.gd a relatively complicated layer that shouldn't get mixed up with your actual game logic that much.

This is all to say that you want a P2P or a player-"hosted" game, like flyknight amongus or shrimp game etc.
If you want a dedicated server for say, an MMO or some persistent server with a lobby system like a .io game, I wouldn't bother with godotsteam. Just use godot's out of the box shit and connect to a raw IP that's port forwarded (or reverse proxied if it's hosted on a virtual machine like it should be when you're in production mode).

I've had quite a bit of experience doing client-server-network design in GMS2 and Godot at this point. If any well-intentioned anons wanna ask me specific questions, you can follow the d*scord link here: https://gotad.io/ or https://egg-drop.io (both are offline rn) and dm the dev.

So I was contacted by my in laws out of the blue recently and they tell me they want to make a game. They knew I was a proficient coder despite being in IT, not software development. So here I am with my knowledge base of C++, C#, Gdscript and you know what engine we've settled on?
>Rpg Maker MZ
I am fine with the choice I guess. I dont want to be a snob about what boils down to a set of tools. That plus I've seen some crazy shit put out from it as well. They're lucky I just picked up Javascript right before too.

Anyways, they want to make some vanity project and that's fine too. I truly don't care. You know why? For the most part they literally feed me the assets as fast as it takes me to ask. Can't be happier working on this in that sense. Truth be told, I've been in several game dev groups and it's always felt like pulling teeth just trying to have any sort of coordination. I don't want to set a meeting to set a meeting to decide what color to shade a distant tree god damn it. If I gotta pull a Boxer from Animal Farm; an Atlas if you will, for these yuppy twats then that's I will do.

Thanks for reading my blog.

Happy for you, my man, but can't relate.
My mom has been trying to get into OpenGL for the past year or two, and every time she calls me and asks me how to open file in C I wanna do a flip (she refuses to use C++ because it came after her time) (she had experience with assembly and C when she was young, and did some computer work before it was hip and cool and I existed). Her attention span wanes and she either makes stupid rookie "forgot to call malloc" mistake, or just straight up tries to offtopic the explanation. Like - she asked me why she needs to compile a shader, and when I try to explain that "it's like a CPU" the moment she hears the word "CPU" she starts telling me about how northbridge delivers data from ram to CPU and how it's extremely efficient or something.
Sometimes I'm scared of calling her cuz I'm afraid she may ask me a technical question.

Yeah well the standard behavior in vector math is to check both x and y, not just skip "y" if x is true. I wasted 15 minutes on finding this.

>>521312845
Bro with your code (3, 3) < (-4, -4). You're comparing vectors directly, so it's assumed you compare the scalars, not their magnitudes. You wouldn't make an operator overload to check Vector.length() < Vector.length().

Every time you overload an operator you get seething users complaining about "but why is bitwise operator used for putting data on a stream waah waah". And they would be correct, this is not natural and not obvious. So is comparing vectors.
Fuck it, wanna compare vectors? I'll compare memory adresses of where the class located. Enjoy.

I have this anxiety that we only have like 5-10 years before AI reaches insane capabilities and the opportunity for small creators to succeed in any form of art will vanish forever. It’s like what happened with physics, nowadays any significant discovery can only happen within giant corporations. No one’s going to make a major breakthrough in a garage anymore.

Meh, I come from a math and Mathlab environment. I mostly used C++ until Godot, where I just made my own vector classes and implemented how I expected them to work. If I wanted to compare magnitudes, I'd compare magnitudes, otherwise scalar seems like the normal choice for a 2D vector.
Maybe I'm a bit biased for expecting this to be the default implementation, but I'm not the first one to be tripped over by this.
https://github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/9284
https://forum.godotengine.org/t/comparing-vectors/26704

Anyway it seems like I stirred the horde. I'm sorry for daring to question the Godot implementation, please don't ban my Github, Twitter and Discord accounts from the Godot communities!

>his column-major arrays are indexed from one and he thinks the only thing he's learned is supposed to be "the standard"
Godot is C++ and follows C++ standards. The issue you linked even says that Godot treats a vector compare the same way std::vector does:
https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/algorithm/lexicographical_compare
>>
>>521320226
The lexicographical standard is purely for comparing sequences (arrays), which is useless for 99% of cases when comparing Vector2's in a real use case.
I get that under the hood the Vector2's implementation is a fixed size array of 2, which is why they went with it, but it'd be like returning Vector2.length() always 2 (instead of the magnitude) because Vector2 has 2 values.
Anyway an odd choice for sure, but I wasted more time arguing with you guys than actually working around the problem so I'll stop here.

I wonder if the implementation was actually the other way around, and I complained on why it's not like the C++ lexicographical_compare, if people here would have reacted the same, or actually agreed "yeah you're right anon it should have been the other way". It's weird that somehow everyone in the thread agrees that Godot has the perfectly correct implementation when it could have gone either way kinda like with little and big endians. Feels like engine tribalism.

>>
>>521321821
I'm the anon who said that from a pure-math perspective, there is no standard definition as to what a comparison between two vectors should result in. Godot chose one of the possible behaviors to go with, and it's not wrong. They could've also just chosen nothing and not implemented the comparison operators at all, and IMO, that would be better. It's your fault that you're too retarded to just read the docs and see what it does. Instead, you made some incorrect assumptions and then made a fool out of yourself.

Yes, not having it implemented would have been infinitely better than having it implemented the way it is right now. Its current implementation is technically useless for any Vector2D use case and practically outright detrimental. Had it not been there I would have known to just individually compare the scalars directly. Unity seems to have done it this way, I guess I chose my engine poorly.

I think we will get senior-level AI in less than a year to 3 years from now.
They just need to build infrastructure for "AI time chamber", then lock them in there with iterative requirements until they learn to write maintainable code. Then a layman want to fix a bug or add a feature, whatever it is they would do it in seconds, not exaggerating.
It's billion dollar industry so it's coming sooner or later.

Not that anon, but right around the time that /weg/ dev got doxxed, Fagoon went quiet for a couple of days and in his stead there was some guy posting his AI generated pedo pictures right around the same timezone, who coincidentally ban evaded after every ban just to keep replying in the thread to other people (the same way fagoon does).
I guess it was a coincidence that he had his exact same posting habits, at the same time, and was never around when fagoon was posting, even though the guy is otherwise insufferably posting every 20 minutes when awake.

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning you at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with an employment gap that big.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.
>>
Skill issue.
>>
>>521336289
Hi Eric, when are you launching your new game?
>>
>>521335449
It's not the runtime fee that bothered me, it's them retroactively changing the ToS for old users and old versions of Unity. If the jewery pushes them that far then there's absolutely no limits or morals to what they'll do.

Okay, you raise a fair idea
>Pong's gameplay depends on the ball reaching the left and right sides of the screen
>Nowadays screen resolutions are fuckall and they are even more different if you run the game windowed or you have a system taskbar taking space
>A larger screen would mean that the ball takes more time to reach each player
>You need to make the gameplay the same between different resolutions
The "just restrict the resolution and make side art" really only works in retro / 2d games. and this gets worse in 3D games because you could restrict player movement but then they still are rendering stuff outside what would be the default player / render area, and side art (2D element) clashes harder with 3D elements

So now that I answered your nothingburger bait "you think too big because you don't deserve good things" reply, where do we go?

It wasn't supposed to be bait. A rail shooter is a reasonably small game. People make them all the time for 48-72 hour game jams. As you point out yourself, 3D Pong has the exact same issues, and you'd know how to solve those issues if you just follow a few tutorials. Instead of asking stupid beginner questions before you even begin, you should Just Like Make Pong.

>A larger screen would mean that the ball takes more time to reach each player
If you're writing this, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how video games work. The ball does not move around in screen/pixel coordinate space. It moves around in a separate "world space". What you see on screen is a window that looks into that world. The size of that window does not affect what happens inside that world.

Okay, I'm just too jaded and this thread has too many retards with bot-like responses.

>People make them all the time for 48-72 hour game jams.
I don't participate in game jams, the only rail shooter that I can think of that released as of late on steam was some starfox clone.
Also checking itchio, most of them restrict the resolution right away as they are gamemaker like, browser games or even pico games

>The ball does not move around in screen/pixel coordinate space. It moves around in a separate "world space". What you see on screen is a window that looks into that world. The size of that window does not affect what happens inside that world.
I know, but a lot of game logic works directly and depending on the viewport / camera, the simplest of all, crosshairs as those are always dead center of screens. I think it's fair to say what I said for sake of simplicity.
I'm thinking that the player position is just a point on the screen, after all, you do not leave the boundaries of the screen.

Imagine Space Harrier, you always play that game with the same resolution / screen ratio / screen size. Harrier !!NEVER!! leaves the screen.
Now, if you were to make an entirely new game (not just a remake) in modern systems and not a console or an arcade cabinet where screen sizes are always the same, how do you balance the game? How do you make sure it works in all systems equally?
Is that even a concern? Should that be a concern for an indie game? Maybe just say "fuck it, play on an ultrawide if you want" and let players have fun? Make it an option so you can have The Intended tm and free form?

the model looks very boxy as well, so you should push and pull the verts to exagerate the sihouette, especially around the waist and knees. why not add more verts? even a shitty engine like godot will easily render this, and you don't get any retro points if it looks shit.
Also you should rig the model now if you haven't already. Only pros who know what they're doing can get away with model->texture->rig. Noobs must go back and forth.

I requested a refund after about 45 minutes. The concept is cool and I don't mind the old graphics, but this game becomes a 'party movement' simulator more than a healing simulator. Your AI party won't avoid telestrations at all and the UI makes it hard to know when you're healing an ally or damaging an enemy.

I lost to the 2nd boss twice not because I oomed or got unlucky skills, but that the boss requires most of your actions to be focused on moving your party around the room to avoid his attacks. Not just you, mind you, your party.

If you don't mind that or even enjoy commanding all your AI teammates in real-time, then this game could still be for you, but it's not for me. If/when they implement movement into the AI skillset of your team, then it'd be a cute $10 game. But right now it's far too technical like a Dark Souls but with poor movement ability.

Can you imagine just randomly becoming a millionaire overnight like that? One random streamer plays your game and boom, 100k sales. You're set for life, never have to worry about food or rent again, can buy your family whatever you want for Christmas. I bet you even walk differently on the street just from the sheer lack of stress or urgency in life. Ever notice how these things don't happen to people like you and me? I wonder how it feels like. We are problem solvers. "Solving the game", i..e making it easier and faster to solve is what rewards our neurons the most. If you allow near complete amount of optimization of the game's challenge then players will do it and then find themselves bored.

(Same thing is happening with society by the way.)

I'd say never give player choices without tradeoffs. That's why I don't have difficulty levels in my game. The player can choose to play in a way that's more or less difficult but they'll pay for it with more or less XP and better or worse gear.

I really don't like difficulty settings. In my first game I had only one difficulty, in my second game I gave player choices in how they want to play (high difficulty encounters offer high rewards and better gear). In those two games I had players complain the games are too difficult and unfair. In my third game I adjusted difficulty dynamically with some random spikes to shake things up. I had least complaints about difficulty in that 3rd game but I also had the lowest playtime so who the fuck knows.

Reference I'm going for.
Clouds are obviously moving way too fast and the ground texture is too big. Aside from that the alpha is the trickiest thing to work with, because it needs to be pretty transparent close to the camera (bottom of screen) and stop being transparent somewhere towards the middle-ish. Maybe a deeper blue sky color would also help?

I don't know why the other anon is being mean but you might want to look into how skies work. It's very possible my phone is fucked up but from this it looks like it's going more saturated from the centre than from the top. Reflections also get a bit more diffused too. Salt flats have have ground that will absorb some light so think of the reflections like recycled light. If you recycle something, it ends up losing a bit of intensity in the process.

James gurney and Marco Bucci got good videos on this stuff .

Looks super neat though!

Your game is somewhere between 1400-1800 hours of development by now? How close was I?
>>
>>521362114
The saturation might just be the 50% alpha + ground texture + sky texture messing things up around the center because I'm pretty sure it's the same sky color everywhere.

fygoon man you've gotta at least try make it look like you aren't samefagging. Also WTF is this new boogeyman of yours? Are the "liq discord" or "kannadev" or "grassfag" or that guy who sounds like "mcdonalds" no longer your favourite villains?
>>
>>521368695

>Doxroach

Uh oh, Doxroach meltie!!!
The Sparrow is going to get you.
>>
>>521368695
It's usually an overestimate. You sit down to work at noon and you get up at 6pm and you think you've worked for 6 hours but it's closer to 2-3.
>>
>>521369664
Keep talking like a fucking fag
>>
Why do the jannies not just ban fagtroon? How the fuck is he able to post the shit he does and only get his posts deleted? Is he really ban evading?

I'm confused. Who is the Doxroach. Is it fygoon or is it Betz? I genuinely can't tell.
>>
>fagoon thread was deleted
LMAOOOO
told you

>Doxroach is FUCKING PISSED!!!
How does it feel to have no power here?
>>521370535
Neither.
>>
>>521370535
fygoon is the only person saying "doxroach". He had a huge meltie about his pedo buddy YTCdev getting doxxed, and has spent the last month ruminating on ways to take revenge on /agdg/. He tried to doxx some rando a few threads back and nobody cared, so he immediately went into the classic fygoon meltdown mode and started making up nonsense about his (fictional) enemies.
>>
>>521369940
He uses either a ban evasion website or just resets his router constantly. He has no life or actual friends, nor does he even work on his game. One of the few things he does for entertainment in his sad life is try to stir up fights on /v/, AGDG, and the Discord.

The first time he got banned from the Discord was because he started complaining that literally no one was giving him attention. Eventually he's going to have to get a job flipping burgers or bagging groceries at Walmart if his parents get tired of him being a useless leech, and he won't have time left to samefag and play schizo in the threads.

I was in the car with my GF. We were driving back to her place to have sex after watching The Brutalist (2024). During part of our conversation, I said something rather obvious (I've forgotten exactly what), and she said, and I quote, "Who would have thunk it?". I immediately thought of LocalThunk and I just flipped out. I stopped the car and forced her to get out. I was gripping the steering wheel so tightly my large, muscular, hands started to bleed. My face was completely red. She (my girlfriend) looked really scared. Does this happen to anyone else?
>>
>vandalized OP
How about no.
>>
CP poster you know what to do
>>
Can we get a non-fagtroon one?
>>
So I'm nodevving today because I'm outside and touching grass and getting sunlight etc already hate it and bored so of course I brought headphones and mobile controller, and I picked a random game in my backlog, a gameboy homebrew game, and it's janky and obvs amateur, i literally hit Talk and if I'm off by a pixel I won't activate the chat or my hp will be 0.....but I won't die until I get hit again by the killing blow, etc

But I like this game, I'm cheesing through the bosses and for a Harvest Moon clone, I have to guess if plants are watered as there is no indicator if they were whatsoever, but it's fun, just goes to show if you focus on the mechanics, you can get away with alot

Here's the game
https://spicyfuse.itch.io/runiestory
Anyways, I'm going back to touching grass and psuedodevving*

*that's when I play a game and nitpick everything I can do better
>>
>>521359957
100% of jrpgs would be better without combat
>>
>>521372308
Chat, is this true?
>>
>>521370408
cuckbelt isn't a real belt, this is fake.
>>
Someone make a non fagoon thread or it's going to get deleted again...
>>
>>521372763
Kinda, JRPGs are basically VNs that pretend to have gameplay. The generic ones, at least
>>
>>521372763
Most jrpgs have very generic stories that would barely fill 5 pages if written out so they need to pad it out with grinding bs for +8 hours
>>
>fagoon and pedo posting already started
someone make a real one
>>
>>521372052
Jojo vibes
>>
>>521368650
I'm just glad he doxed that loser from /v/3
>>
>>521370535
Ugh Betz doxxed himself for attention to use the fygoon drama (we all hate fygoon because he's a shitter that's it) to promote /v/3
He always pulls some bullshit psyop to fuck with the thread, not surprised he's working with fagtroon.
