They sure as shit didn't have an actual arc to their character, they're the same at the start as they are by final frame far and wide. It was always the digidestined who had to learn some mild lesson in order to use their digivice, or their crest, often with the digimon in question already exhibiting the right trait long before it happens. Biyomon was probably the worst offender of this, all she did was the exact same thing she's been doing since episode 1, and Sora treated it like some massive revelation.On the flipside, we have actual character conflict with the digimon in Tamers. Renamon wonders if Rika's even worth bothering with, since she only wanted power from the very start, and when Rika abandons her she almost decides to go with the Devas because of it. But she has an actual emotional moment and grows as a character, something that'll eventually carry on to her saving Impmon at the very end of the Digiworld portion. Guilmon has to actually grow to understand stuff outside of his simple mindset. Even Antylomon has to learn that humans aren't as messed up as she thought they were. Sure, Marineangemon and Andromon got shafted in this regard, no argument there, but we still got Impmon's full on start to end of show arc, there was development, changes differences. And obviously this meant the humans also had a whole bunch of character development, but what's distinct is it made the digimon get to have their own, instead of just being kind of there when it happens.Adventure just didn't give the actual selling point, the digimon, time to be themselves.

It was good, because you weren't familiar with anything like it at the time and related to at least one of the characters in the cast while dealing with your own shit growing up. It definitely isn't better than the rest though. It's still very rough, and you feel it going from ending to stretching out into more, which middles around a long time and doesn't have much of a vision for most of those episodes between the the destinations. The big wins are also mostly "destined" asspulls rather than anything remotely earned by the characters, and some of the characters hilariously end up becoming awful people like Yamato for the sake of some short-term mediocre plot shakeups. There's a couple of really impressive episodes by themselves that carry the entire series on their own, and as much as people love to be too cool for the meme dub, it played a large part in making it interesting at the time, even though that version erased some of the interesting aspects of the original.
How are you feeling about Shoto and Owen's character dynamic?
