Both Tails and Knuckles are overshadowed by Shadow. Amy as well, due to "Sonadow", but that's lessened by Shadamy also being a popular ship anyway, because in that case, it's SONIC being overshadowed. But in regards to Tails, "Shadow" completely stole the role of being a "second Sonic" with a yellow aura racing against Sonic in multiplayer, and having virtually the same abilities/techniques as Sonic. It bugs me how often some people may just default to Shadow when they want there to be a "player 2" in Sonic's adventures. It's not just about Shadow being Sonic's rival, it's also making Shadow into Sonic's "sidekick" or "partner", in a way where the only two characters that matter are Sonic and Shadow.

But that's just Ian Flynn writing Tails fan fiction in a game Sonic Team made that once-again just has Sonic as the sole playable character while Player 1.5/Player 2 is just stuck on the sidelines LITERALLY "VIRTUALLY INCAPABLE" of doing anything even when he wants to! It's not until the DLC where Tails is playable again... and they gave him wrench attacks. Throwing. Wrenches. Not even the Tail Swipe or even that arm cannon blaster he has in this very game...
