Sonic as a franchise will be fine for the foreseeable future. The movies do well enough and the comics, while of questionable quality, will keep going under a new publisher if anything happens. It's the console games that are at risk. Sonic averages 2 to 4 million sales on a game, sometimes with or without extra shilling. All it will take is a few misteps and the budget for them will be slashed again.

Frontiers seperating cyber-space and open-zone is a tacit admission that they couldn't figure out how to make Sonic in an open-world format. I think the only thing that makes sense is having one massive level with branching paths and missions set in the open zone with waypoints you have to hit. Just make that shit like 500% denser.
