I'm sure for some people, being out of the spotlight was a point of contention, but it totally ignores the objectively shit quality writing DT had in general. It regularly forgot that it was a video game story. In other words, there's boundless potential to SHOW, not TELL. But it barely tried to do this. For example, at the beginning of the expansion, Wuk takes you around to those stones and tells you about all the cool shit her dad did in the past. Instead of showing this through a cutscene, or letting us PLAY it through some flashback "you will now play as X" type thing, they just dragged us from stone to stone while Wuk droned on. It was like this in so many cases. When we built the weaponized train, they could've let us play the on rails shooter leadup to the dungeon. There's an on rails shooter built into the game already, literally just reskin the gold saucer game. But no, we got a fucking cutscene showing everyone else having a blast. And that's just on a surface level. There were so many moments, more than I can even remember, where a character would say they were feeling a certain way, or indicate that they believed a certain thing, but the proof of those claims just wasn't there. It was so lazily done. I think the most glaring moment was when Bakool Jaja became a good guy. From the player perspective, BJJ has been a mustache twirling villain until now, with basically no hints that there was a good guy underneath. He unleashes flaming terror on a village. He kidnaps people. He's awful. And he only changes his ways when he's beaten in combat and has no other path forward. This shouldn't be some redeeming moment, but the game keeps beating you over the head and telling you it is, and then like clockwork it comes out with a sad backstory like that excuses everything. An ounce of editing. A dash of foreshadowing. Anything. Anything would've made it better. IDM being a side character, just give me a good story

And they didn't even do it by showing, they just had characters tell me it over and over again. I don't take issue with BJJ changing. I take issue with him changing in the laziest way possible. If they'd foreshadowed BJJ's backstory at all during his mustache twirling bits, or had him hesitate at all before doing any of that evil shit, or showed him being kind to his men (he literally leaves one of them behind at one point when the dude's tired and begging for a break) or did anything to make us wonder if there was more beneath the surface than a comic book villain, then his transition into good-guy would've felt more believable to me. Hell, you know what would've been cool? If right before releasing the fucking fire demon, he paused and hesitated, but then for just a moment the screen flashed to a dark room with a pile of those jars with him standing at the top like pic related. And then he makes up his mind to do the bad thing. This creates doubt for the viewer, because now we're wondering a) what we just witnessed, and b) what else is going through BJJ's head. Instead there's nothing like that, so his change comes out of nowhere and feels forced/fake.
