Exclusively focusing only on one side is just being ignorant, and can easily lead to misunderstandings. If you only care about what you see on-screen in the games you play first-hand while discarding/ignoring any of the manual stuff or Sonic Channel stuff or anything that Sonic Team themselves say and write behind the scenes or whatever, then you're "claiming" to only value what you see with your own eyes... But that isn't true, because relying only on what you "think" you see will easily lead you to misunderstandings just like reading the manuals but not playing the games would. You need both in order to have the complete picture of what Sonic is. I study what the written profiles say about Sonic. I study what the cutscenes say about Sonic. I study what the gameplay says about Sonic. I study what everything surrounding the game canon, and even other stuff around it if-applicable, says about Sonic to gain the full picture as clearly as I can.

Deadly enemies become harmless kittens unable to inflict even minor injuries to him for no reason at all. Then, that enemy will turn around and give someone else a character-defining thrashing. By the end of the game, you’ll be lucky to even have the villains still against Sonic and his views, as the narrative will try its hardest to make even the bad guys fold to his empty platitudes.
