What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as A Hat in Time, Animal Well, Baba Is You, Balatro, Battle Brothers, Cave Story, Celeste, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, Dead Cells, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hades, Hollow Knight, Hotline Miami, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Monster Train, Noita, Nuclear Throne, OFF, OneShot, Rain World, Shovel Knight, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, The Witness, Void Stranger, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

thank god, I sat here for over an hour with my own OP ready to go, lazing away. Was terrified it'd be vandalized again. Coulda spent it playing vidya but I aimlessly scroll most days anyway.

Speaking of normal, how fucked up is the steam group?
>>
>>536192364
Dead as a doornail.
>>
>>536191668
i am one of the first scavposters here, and i've been posting on /indie/ for the past 4 years or so, and i want to say that the is in a pit where any kind of normal discussion is it is nearly impossible because it's stuck between two polarized communities, and the closest i've got to a normal conversation about it was here. it absolutely deserves attention because it's genuinely a well made and innovative game, as long as you're willing to look deeper than the exterior, it could've been also easily sold on steam in EA with the current amount of content, and yet, it's free and is of higher quality than kusoges occasionally posted here.
there's just no place to talk about it publicly, and it's saddening, because i can definitely see it carving out it's own niche on the market in the nearby future
>>
>>536192950

>>
You don't own your Steam games
>>
>>536193089
Worse, you don't own your bank account.
>>
>>536193074
well, the vandalized thread revealed that there are quite a few people willing to talk about them in this general, so remember that every time you reply to somebody there's a change they're a furry
>>
>>536193181
You don't even own your money as long as central banking is a thing.

It seems you need to unlock something called "trade deals" with the town's people. And as you sell more stuff you unlock more perks.

>furries are so destructive that they can't have civilized conversation about their own shit
Lol. If the vandalized thread proved something, is that furries are disruptive of the general's harmony and should be shunned. The last thing /indie/ needs is furry drama.

i had decent dialogue both about the game and the niche it occupies, both out and in the vandalized thread, and more often than not - the least civilized part of the discussion was somebody telling me to kill myself because i discuss a game with anthropomorphic creatures.

No, I believe it was a meme addition for a forum poster(Tallgeese) back when the game had like 5 players.
They are trash, but if you sell them you'll get around 300K which is a lot in NG0, especially since you can go straight here as soon as you finish ch1 and have access to the whole game world.

Okay I got a stupidly specific question about Starsector. A while back I encountered this fucking thing, poorly drawn because of course, in a bounty mission and I just grabbed it via console because it looked amusing. Recently though I realized that I have not seen that bounty in my mission lists anywhere, and also when I went to look at mods that add ships and whatnot in Starsector's mod page (which this fucking thing certainly must have come from, as far as I can remember that's the only place I use to get some mods to the game from) I could not find any mod with this specific fucking thing in it. To provide a bit more extra besides the poorly drawn design, it had like 2-3 built-in drones, built-in missile launchers and an omnidirectional weapon slot right in the middle of the ship. Anyone who could point me to the right direction where this fucking thing originates from would be much appreciated.

Don't mind the shitstirrer, I enjoy your Scav posts. Said this before, the physics remind me heavily of Plazma Burst (1 & 2) games, a sequel for which (2.5/3) I've been waiting for since 2015. While I'm more interested in Gunsaw as it shares more similarities with PB (Eric Gurt, PB's creator, even recommended it), Scav looks like an interesting project to keep an eye on too. Like a procgen version of that with heavy survival elements. Reminds a bit of Noita as well.

How come human are persistence predators in the wild, but said persistence approach literally NEVER work in video games? Whether it's Valheim or Sengoku Dynasty, the animals can just keep running indefinitely 5ever.
>>
>>536220410
Probably because humans in real life aren't persistence predators.
>>
>>536222164
humans are very adaptable and our hunting strategies usually incorporate a number of different approaches, and persistence hunting is one of them

And humans can survive on a vegan diet. Doesn't mean that humans are herbivores.
Persistence hunting was only recorded to be somewhat successful on very specific climates and terrain. Notably not anywhere near where early humans settled and not in the type of woods that Valheim and Sengoku Dynasty have.

Because making hunting a walking simulator, while an efficient use of personal energy, would be dreadfully boring to play. Like you're effectively asking why more game dont have a hunting mechanic where you walk a path for hours, occasionally seeing animal tracks, until you reach thebutterly exhausted animal and kill it effortlessly as its too tired to run away once more. Doesnt take a genius to understand that wouldnt translate well into a format meant to be entertaining to the player, so in turn dev will almost always opt for a more proactive system as to expediate the process.

But I do get your point, and prefer it when the enemy (wether it be an npc or animal) own stats and functions work on a level comparable to ours which even the field out, make the whole process fairer and more enjoyable. I mean getting your shit kicked in by an npc who can just swing a 20 pound club constantly without rest aint the same as getting your shit kicked by an npc who need to manage its own stamina so it doesnt find itself exhausted within arm reach of the opponent aka you. Same reason why I prefer fps where the enemy die easily but so do you.

this is the one in the bottom left corner.
since it's already given that X = 1 and Y = 2 from how it starts and both rows and columns contain 2* A that makes both sums =18+2A so A doesn't matter and B has to be 0.

The shields don't regen fast enough to out-tank a huge nest of behemoth worms forever, but I did have to sit still here for about five seconds to drop to half health and I was able to move fast enough to escape with little to no trouble. The lasers aren't doing enough damage to reasonably kill them within a decent time frame, but it's killing stuff eventually with 30 of them working together.

What the fuck? Anyway, using legendary prod for Kovarex is a bit of a waste due to the way productivity works. It takes the result and removes the base cost from it. So for Kovarex you get 1 U235 and no U238 from productivity. It's pretty much the only case where that applies in vanilla.

I installed 3 mods:
>Unlocks all crafting tiers early
>10 levels of crafting (Normal + "+" versions of each) to make the entire system more complicated
>Shattered Planet
One of the three mods added a researchable upgrade for most machines at 2x the original research cost, which lets you build a +2 module slot upgrade of that machine but in exchange it runs slower. I'm guessing it was Shattered Planet Honestly I'm really liking how the three mesh together but that's probably just me.

>Anyway, using legendary prod for Kovarex is a bit of a waste due to the way productivity works. It takes the result and removes the base cost from it. So for Kovarex you get 1 U235 and no U238 from productivity. It's pretty much the only case where that applies in vanilla.
I'm not sure I understand, please explain it to me with clear language.
>>
>>536324050
>I'm not sure I understand
prod bonus is applied to the net output from a given recipe, not the gross output
the net output of kovarex enrichment is 1 u235 and -3 (functionally 0) u238, so that's the bonus output you get every time the prod bonus bar fills
>>
>>536324050
Alright so a little bit of history, when Kovarex processing was added to the game there was a major bug that caused it to duplicate EVERYTHING you get from it when paired with productivity. Basically with 20% prod you'd get 41 uranium 235 and 2 uranium 238 every 5 crafts. That was obviously not intended and way too powerful. Literally the next day Wube removed the ability to use productivity for Kovarex until they found a clever way around the issue. 2 years later, they changed productivity so that it wouldn't duplicate the catalyst. Basically if a recipe gives the same material as it uses, the game will take the product minus the cost to determine what you get from productivity. In that case it's 41-40=1.

nta, but if my math isn't off if you slap legendary productivlty into everything the entire fuel cell-> fuel cell recycling-> kovarex enrichment process is almost net zero but not quite?
It's like they knew what they were doing and don't want you to have infinite energy for nothing...
though it's like -3 u238 for 20 fuel cells in total so might as well be infinite if you have a decently sized uranium field.
and if you remove the legendary prod from kovarex it's -4 u238 for 20 fuel cells? yeah. definitely not worth it. unless you are swimming in prod modules.

That's why I'm extra upset about the clusterfuck regarding Subnautica 2. I've already been very skeptical of it and frankly some of the things they've showed so far (for instance the base building) I dislike quite a bit. But now I'm not even sure what to expect of it quite frankly.
It almost makes me want to get into gamedev and make my own Subnautica knock off that I've been having some cool idea for for a while now. But I'm aware that I'm vastly underestimating how hard something like this is or how much time it would take to learn all the necessary skills especially alongside all the other things I'm currently learning in my free time

They really blew it with below zero, first by trying to make it into a narrative driven game (failing completely to understand the appeal of silent mc from the first game) which was so bad and hamfisted they retroactively changed it all during production hence why the story feel all over the place and certain voiceline between the MC and Al-an feel off or make no sense chronologically. At first it was all about the sister who was painted as muh victim, but what she did was literally industrial sabotage of planetside colonies and installation without proper evidence of ill intent from Alterra, so her redemption arc got canned and she is now just a comment when passing by some cavein where she died. What came afterward was a mishmash of plot points that never really went anywhere, many remnants of the previous storyline.

It was basically a subnautica game seemingly made by peoples who never played the first and completely missed what made it beloved.

Yes, I'm still in disbelief about this. The Sunbeam crash scene is probably one of my favorite moments in any video game I've every played because of the restraint it showed of not having your AI make a witty remark or some objective marker popping up. You just stand there in the deafening silence of the aftermath, left along with your own thought. It hit me hard even on the second and third time seeing it.
Also the premise to Below Zero was kinda absurd. Stranding yourself on the planet semi intentionally is so much less interesting.

Seekers of the Storm had a very messy release. It took some time, but things were fixed.

For once, Gearbox learned from that mistake and there's another expansion in development, Alloyed Collective. They even brought back Ghor (one of the original Hopoo devs, who worked in both ROR games) to ensure things are right this time.

I do worry about Gearbox's future if Borderlands 4's releases and is shit (there's been bad signs since it was announced). I worry that if shit goes wrong, it affects ROR2.

Good advice. I've been playing shorter games lately because I can't be bothered sinking into something, but you are right. If Holllow Knight wasn't too long I'd be up for it more but I'm a completionist fag too which doesn't help
I have been half in the mood for cuphead, which has also been in my backlog. Now I'm between the 2. I prob wouldn't play Silksong after release anyway, but it might be nice to finally understand the hype. I've always liked the aesthetic, it's just a shame it's been so aped over the years it probably won't feel as fresh as when it released. Thatt's the only drawback of being years behind on a backlog

Are romhacks and mods allowed? Because I'm sure I got a fat 3 digits hours out of a few them and it legitimately makes me think about how insane those people are for wasting so much time for no monetary compensation, just out of sheer personal satisfaction and deliver an insanely high quality product that pushes the base game to a whole new level. Aside from that, I quite enjoyed the Liquid Measures 2 and 3 flash games, their expansions Dark Fluid and Poison Pack included. Picross Touch on Steam is also a comfy game.
I didn't vibe much with it, but I highly respect what it is going for (essentially an optimization / high efficiency simulator) and has about 80 hours of free content. The very definition of a game for autists, clinically diagnosed autists. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1141290/Tactical_Nexus/

The existence of copycats are irrelevant if you've never played them before playing the original which set the trend, and realistically there aren't many HK inspired games out there, definitely no more than 5. Anyway, if you end up enjoying Cuphead, then check out Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy, which is pretty much a chinese version of it, great artstyle, great music and great bosses.
>>
>>536427186
I don't think they fit exactly since they're mostly based on a regular game already existing. It's a bit murky in my mind. Like, where do we draw the line? Thief campaigns that are longer than the actual game, do they count? What about The Dark Mod does that count? Nehrim and Enderal? Factorio overhauls that take 1k+ hours to complete?
But excluding them would also be hypocritical since very few projects are made from purely open source tools. In fact holocure was made using gamemaker which is only free if your product is non-commercial and not on console.
I guess I can add mindustry to the list since the game is FOSS and a complete product.

The thing that caught my attention the most in your post was
>"I can't believe this game is free"
I feel like that's a pretty high level of emotion to have, which is hard for free games to achieve, specially outside of roguelikes. But then again maybe you've just meant as a literal statement, rather than a expression of intense emotions, as in "why is this or these devs are not charging 10 or 5 bucks for this game?".

Basically, it's an addicting game that can be used to communicate without the prison's knowledge. 2 things that you really don't want in your prison.

Let's start with the obvious:
No game makes you smarter. Some puzzle games and others like TBRPGs can be fun because they won't be an outright insult to their players' intelligence but they won't make you smarter, unless you are below normalfag tier 100 IQ retard. Games are casual entertainment for the masses.

I don't think you can get smarter with a hobby like gaming, but if you were smart you'd get your kicks out of doing stuff like studying how the platforms your games run on work, examining how the games work, writing modding/other tools for games, reverse engineering or even porting games, writing guides, writing your own game engines (if you have time for bigger projects), etc. Not just playing the games, that's not stimulating enough for an analytical mind. Maybe this perspective can give you some ideas.

Games can be good tools for teaching the simplified basics of certain fields in a very intuitive and simple way. (The prime example is of course KSP and orbital mechanics.) Enough to form an intuitive grasp of the fundamentals that can aid in further learning of practical applicable knowledge. But you have to be acively wary of what you learn from games; understand which parts are valuable and which are downright misleading bs or white lies for children at best.
But increasing one's knowledge is different from increasing one's intellect. Games don't make one smarter unless he already has a curious mind which applies to all of his pursuits.

I'm planning to do something like this, but on water. I've been connecting large lakes with canals for sailing, but two of them are separated by a mountain. Mining a tunnel big enough for a boat is going to take forever, so I'm thinking of using bombs.
Unfortunately I'm out of flax and it's already winter, so I'll have to postpone it until next year.

>Games are casual entertainment for the masses
This is a baffling thing to say in a general mostly dedicated to games that aren't even made with mass appeal as a design goal, plenty of video games aren't even made mainly for the purpose of entertainment.
Video games can be no less intellectually stimulating than a complex documentary or novel.

There is "The World in the Mirror" that is just an empty, "infinite" grass field with no enemies or resources to gather.
I say "infinite" because the portal world actually teleports you back closer to the center when you approach the edge, giving the illusion of infinity.
Flathill portal world is fairly safe with good amount of base spots away from the giants, if you can stomach the foggy enviroment.

But you really shouldn't build any permament bases in the resource portal worlds like Flathill or the Train, because if you are inside the PW while portal reset happens, the world you are in won't reset and won't replenish the resources inside.
You can build bases there, but you just shouldn't stay in them during reset nights.
>>
>>536519383
One is basically flatgrass from gmod, I dont remember all of them, but most hostile anteverse allow building in them and the player structure stay between resets iirc, so if you can guess where its safe then its free real estate.

Cheats make the game easier and / or faster. If it does neither, it's not a cheat.
>>
>>536529539
Legendary and epic quality items make the game easier. Everything of a quality higher than the base has increased stats, LITERALLY making buildings faster and requiring less of them to make the same output from any given input. Not only does every building he have craft multiple times faster for less resources, he also was showing off legendary armor that had more space in it for upgrades which he also made legendary. You cannot obtain any of the things he is posting until the endgame, and he has chosen to make getting these items significantly easier by using a mod that allows him to increase his odds by a significant amount which the devs specifically disallowed because it would too easy. This guy is a cheating faggot in denial and it's no wonder he doesn't post at /egg/, he'd be laughed out of the thread instantly
>>
>>536530081
>Legendary and epic quality items make the game easier.
>More yapping that ignores time taken vs "benefits" gained
Only if they take the same length of time to obtain and do, which they don't. That alone completely destroys your entire argument, if doing it the "non-cheating" way takes 100 hours, but doing it the "cheating" way takes 300, that's hardly a cheat that's modding the game to have a different experience.
>>
You are not responding in good-faith and I refuse to continue. I am upset because you are blogposting a game I enjoy outside of the general in which primarily it is posted in, with cheats that ignore the progression of the game. I'm upset because you are giving a game which I associate with a lot of interesting and high effort posts a completely garbage reputation to anyone in this thread that even slightly cared to follow along with a few of your posts. You are blogposting a game that you aren't good at while using cheats and then loudly exclaiming, "I"m not cheating, and I'm not reading your post pointing out that I am cheating!"

The main argument against quality from the start has been that the time you have to invest in it to get results is too long. I don't mind that and want to play with it anyway, despite how inefficient it is. It's fun for me, too bad for you.
>>
>>536533095
Without mods you cannot get legendary modules or anything legendary before beating all planets. Cheating like this kind defeats the whole point of the game.

I'm not paying attention to the cheating accusations going on here, but let's take a step back and ask if cheating really ruins the experience? I'm firmly of the belief that, if done in moderation, it can improve one's experience instead.

Played ARK in SP for 1k hours, and I used the console all the time, and boosted rates for gathering/leveling/breeding etc. Did I cheat away the gameplay loop of tame creatures, build a base, breed better creatures? Nope, I streamlined it, maybe something was taking too long so I used flight, maybe that perfect dino was taking too long to find, so I used a external program hooked to my save file that read off the best dinos and their locations, little things.
Was it cheating? Yes, but I was still playing ARK and engaging with its mechanics and systems, and overall having a better time because of how I played? Abso-fucking-lutely. As long as you're engaging with the games systems, what does it matter if you cheat a little to speed things up if you're still playing the game?

Ark is intended to be like rust where you are supposed to play on a large server full of people with a group to progress. The game has singleplayer for some reason and it's a massive piece of shit where you are basically required to learn console commands to avoid bugs that can fuck up your save

Investing a lot of time and effort into getting endgame gear might not be convenient, but once you have it it will affect progression through the rest of the actual game. That's a cheat mod, would be considered such in any game with linear progression, you are not getting the intended experience. There is no reason to deny it, it's not like cheats make you a bad person.
>>536532051
Factorio is probably fine for this general, and a bit of blogposting keeps the thread going, its generally a good way to learn about new games. Don't see how posting modded gameplay would damage the reputation either, especially when the use of mods was mentioned so we know it's not necessarily an accurate representation of the actual game.

>Investing a lot of time and effort into getting endgame gear might not be convenient, but once you have it it will affect progression through the rest of the actual game.
It takes the entirety of the game. The way quality in Factorio works it's such a long an laborious process that I will be at the end game by the time all my quality shit is done and taken care of, the only differences being that getting to that endgame is going to take a hell of a lot longer (I'm currently running on about 0.8x miners, or 80% of one miner, because that's all I can afford, vs a normal player who'd be using 50 miners at this point.)
It's not like everything is entirely unlocked, not by a long shot. I still have to go through the entire game to unlock T3 modules, Electromagnetic Plants, Foundries, Bio Labs, Stack Inserters, Cryo Plants, Fusion Power and more which would literally put me at the same point anyway and all are more useful and powerful than legendary quality basic type buildings. I'm literally just doing it because it's fun, not because it's powerful. Normally you never bother touching quality for more than maybe a few solar panels and bits of personal equipment, as you only unlock it fully at the end of the game and even then statistically it's inefficient compared to not using it. I like the mechanic though and want to force myself to be fully immersed in it.

Oh, also one important piece of context I should have added:
For the most part, legendary versions of buildings / whatever just make then do the same thing but faster. That's it. An Assembly Machine Mk3 which is unlockable around when you first get the chance to start doing quality simply makes things automatically when provided with materials, and a legendary version does the same thing but faster.
Compare to an Electromagnetic Plant, which does the exact same thing but gives you +50% extra output on everything you make completely for free but it's unlocked in the late-mid game, and the only downside being it has a smaller pool of stuff it can make and you need to go get the Foundry to do the same thing but with other items. Either one completely mog a legendary Assembly Machine Mk3 without needing any quality at all.

Quality's not even always a good thing, the entire reason I died earlier is because I put legendary engines on my spaceship and they turbo boosted me into a bunch of asteroids far faster than they could be shot down. Had to replace them with a single normal quality engine to go slow enough to stay alive.

Are you honestly surprised? Motion twin are anarcho syndicalist, it takes them literally years to start any project so they had to create a regular company (evil empire) to take over. The office drama is rather infamous. Evil empire and motion twin have had several conflict with the law over all kinds of things, including employment discrimination, harassment, etc. Motion twin has officially cut their link with evil empire as a PR move (it's still fully controlled by motion twin employees and owned by them so I'm not really sure how this qualifies as "cutting ties").
>>536549078
>Its weird how they try to pass Evil Empire as the original devs
They're the original devs more or less. Motion twin and evil empire are basically the same company. Motion twin can't handle having more than 10-ish employees without them fighting so they made a traditional studio with a top-down structure, fully controlled by... Motion twin employees. Basically "we're anarchist but we love wage slavery! Everyone is equal (but our wage slaves are less equal than us)". A kind of anarcho-aristocracy if you will...
There is an absurdly large amount of misinformation and disinformation on them online, likely from mistranslation and the fact that employees constantly contradict each others constantly.

Its a mod for mgs5, available on moddb, which allow a ton of customization to the game setting from heli frequency, frequency of armored or better equipment, or better sight (ie last time I played I gave them "realistic" sight so I had to be very careful when sneaking toward a base because a guy with binoculars is going to see my sorry ass from over a km away if I aint careful. Genuinely improved the overall experience in my case.

this is a videogame discussion general, not a release radar board
i would've agreed with you if not for two things:
discussion variety about those games you've mentioned far surpasses the one you would usually find in stale generals with few exceptions
and
they don't take nearly as much space as you would like us to believe, with quite a lot of discussion of other games happening in parralel
another thing worth mentioning is impartiality and larger demographics variety. when you come to egg, you expect to see factorio autists with thousands of hours. when you are here, you can get opinion from somebody who doesn't even play the game

finished echo point nova DLC
it's more gimmicky, the map is larger and more open (original map was about 8km in diameter and was scattered on islands so picking up speed was more difficult, this one is about 20km but you can easily reach mach 1 pretty much anywhere right from the start if you're good enough, making traversal overall faster than in vanilla), but the start is much quicker. less scans and content (just 2 leviathan fights, but the ones that are in are great), but extra content is more gimmicky which keeps things fresh. level quality is on the same level as vanilla i'd say, with few exceptions that are a bit rough, but there's only like 2-3 scans like that out of 30.
took me about 7 hours to complete, while the vanilla took about 10

>Who cares that he's cheating in a single player game?
I mean, I still don't see it as cheating even 1% unless you can explain what advantages I'm gaining on one machine that somebody else can't beat by building four regular ones? Anybody not doing quality stuff can build a big factory that outperforms mine 20x over using the materials they've saved from not doing quality, while I've spent 100 hours gathering the materials and stuff to build only a handful of machines so even while each machine runs faster than a normal one, there's so few of them the bonus becomes irrelevant.
Quality is better than normal only when space is concerned and the only time that matters is your personal armour as you can't wear multiple of those, and I did all of my combat without the help of any quality related mods so I didn't even get that advantage.
>>
>>536586712
>I'm gaining on one machine that somebody else can't beat by building four regular ones?
they also produce 4 times the pollution having to deal with more biters.
not to mention the bigger footprint needing to expand more having to deal with more biters.
not to mention quality drills/pumpjacks having less resource drain making your fields last longer needing to expand less having to deal with less biters.
legendary drills make your ore patches last SIX FUCKING TIMES as long. The bigger drills from vulcanus are gonna be even dumber than that.
>Quality is better than normal only when space is concerned and the only time that matters is your personal armour

Walls with flamethrowers are 20 miles out from my base with full roboport coverage, I literally do not give a shit if I get attacked by two biters or two thousand.
>not to mention the bigger footprint needing to expand more having to deal with more biters.
I have an insane amount of unused space.
>not to mention quality drills/pumpjacks having less resource drain making your fields last longer needing to expand less having to deal with less biters.
I've 50m in claimed resource patches I'm not using.
>legendary drills make your ore patches last SIX FUCKING TIMES as long. The bigger drills from vulcanus are gonna be even dumber than that.
See above.
>and your space platforms
Quality got me killed on my space platform as I mentioned, until I re-revised the entire setup multiple times.

So again, what advantage do I have in my current game that I couldn't have done while just using all normal quality shit?

I presented no arguments (that was my first message), but to answer your question - if they let you unlock things faster than the default progression then yes
>>
>>536603482
Then it's not cheating by your own definition, as default progression would have finished the game ages ago and enemies evolve to be stronger over time, so all it's doing is making the game harder.
>>
>>536604607
Him being retarded and needing 100 hours to get off nauvis doesn't make those mods any less cheating.
There's an big difference between stuff that adds new content and overhaul mods and
>Unlock legendary this early
>Give every building extra slots
>Allow quality mods in beacons
And who knows what else this shit does under the hood I can't tell from screenshots.
>>
>>536605070
>Him being retarded and needing 100 hours to get off nauvis
I could play normally and do it faster, but quality is fun even if it's worse
>And who knows what else this shit does under the hood I can't tell from screenshots.
There's big tradeoffs:
>10 quality levels, effectively have to go up 9 tiers for legendary instead of 4 to get legendary
>Quality has big effectiveness falloff past 100%, even 1000% quality is not as much as you'd think
>The whole process in general takes forever and quality modules slow speeds down even further, hence why it's taken 100 hours to get just 5% of my base to legendary quality
>>
>>536604607
>Then it's not cheating by your own definition
but I only said that ''bypassing default progression = cheating', and by that definition it obviously is cheating (not that you should care about it, it's a singleplayer game, so as long as it makes things more fun you should play like that. personally I dropped the game after vulcanus because of the quality autism)

>>
>>536606595
NTA, I can see why you think it's reasonable but that does not account for the breadth of what people mean when they say 'cheating'. It is not necessarily the effect of "bypassing default progression" that counts as a cheat, but the act of doing so.
For example, in Terraria there are dyes, which let you change the color of armor. Some of these dyes only become available after defeating late-game bosses (and doing a minor quest). I could mod the game, so that they can be bought at any time but for a ridiculously high price (like 10,000g). Thus, farming to get them early would take so much time and effort that it would actually be easier to proceed through the game as normal. And once obtained, the dyes are purely cosmetic, with no affect on gameplay. Plus, some of the basic early-game dyes look better anyway.
But a mod to get the dyes early would still be a cheat mod, because they are a reward in and of themselves. Getting a reward without progressing through though the associated challenge is cheating. Even if we experience more of an early-game problem, which makes the game more arduous overall, it still means changing the game to receive reward without doing what is normally required to earn it. The value of the reward, or amount of effort involved in bypassing normal progress do not change the fact it is a cheat.

A very important part of Hollow Knight for me was entering a new area and being amazed by how cool it looks and a trailer can ruin that initial sense of wonder really quickly.

Ignoring the fact your legendary level is absolutely retarded compared to vanilla, huh?
legendary mech armor normally only has a grid of 15*17. yours is like 5 tiers above that. so not only did you unlock legendary early. you unlocked like legendary+++++ early.
Show the stats of one of the buildings man, because they are also probably a shit ton stronger than vanilla legendary which makes your garbage even less comparable.
if all your shit mods would add something of value that justify all this bloat but instead you sit here going "muh quality" and make a handfed base on fulgora.

I'm not passing judgement or making an accusation. I'm just telling you that that is the default, non autistic, normal consensus opinion. People create rules in their heads and if you go around The Rules™ that is considered cheating, the word 'cheat' exists to describe such cases.
I did not understand this either until getting a friend to join my Terraria world in MP and gib some dyes which he called cheating. Turns out the word encompasses more than just making the main game easier for yourself.

DCSS is much more streamlined, for good and ill. Nethack is really complicated in ways that are honestly kind of silly. Like, you can dip a sack in a can of grease to get a greased sack, that will protect its contents from getting wet, which will ruin scrolls and spellbooks if they're just in your inventory when you fall into water. And if the grease is cursed, it has a 50% chance to fail, and gives you slippery fingers when it works. Reading about the weird interactions is fun, but I have no idea how I'm supposed to figure any of that shit out in game.
On the other hand, Nethack has a much simpler dungeon layout, and smaller floors.
I haven't played it nearly enough to say what the "best" version is. You can download the official build from https://www.nethack.org/v367/downloads.html. If you want to feel like a linux wizard, you can ssh to nethack.alt.org. There are tens of forks that add more stuff, but I haven't played any of them.

You use them in vanilla space age because a legendary mech armor is 15x17 and since every equipment is even sized except for belts, you have 1 column and 1 line left. The line can be filled with belts which is the only odd sized equipment in the game (3x1) and the column can be filled with batteries.

>How do oven work?
you put in a heat source, whether that's convection through the exterior (fuel in a chamber below) or direct hot air (natural gas combustion or a vent)
this creates a high temperature environment which heats the food you put in, making it tastier and more easily digested if you do it the right amount
how exactly the heating changes the food is pretty complex but not really important for the question of how ovens work

You can wing it for the most part and there's an in-game help section, but the game can be pretty obtuse about information.
Or even if it does give the info it's not where it should be. Like you can find what your attributes do in the help section, but it really should be apparent just by looking at them in your character screen.

There's a DLC that adds one more level (which was originally cut from the game but later reintroduced as DLC). Haven't seen you posting screenshots from it. Yep, I like it. Too bad I've played the original a billion times. Proper modern controls finally away from the pressure sensitive mapped to a button like the hd collection, man that shit sucks and ruins that version. Looks lovely, runs alright not great. It's literally an exact remake, no expanded areas or anything which is kinda sad but fair enough. The only thing I'm really disappointed about and it's mostly my own misunderstanding, I somehow got the impression from vaguely reading the prerelease stuff that you can use the radio while in-game, like the camouflage quick change. Nope, it's just a shortcut that takes you to the old radio screen, man I wanted to listen to the optional ones while I'm doing stuff but that's not a thing...

Is this what Kenshi is? I thought it was an RPG with heavy party management in postapocalyptic setting.
>>
>>536789497
It has "RPG elements" by which I mean it has a bunch of increase-by-use character stats and skills.
It can be a solo character game, but you can also have as many people as you want. The only limit is how much you hate yourself and how much clunky micromanagement + grinding you are willing to suffer.
Other than that it's just an empty survival sandbox (the world is not procgen slop though) with extremely sparse authored content like character dialogue or quests. No story/plot of any kind, not even deep procgen storytelling in the style of DF/RW.
And it's good.

Outward is a more traditional RPG... with backpacks.
Rain World is a faggy art game / animation tech demo.

I'm gonna say the closest thing to Kenshi is actually the original concept for STALKER's ALife before publisher demands messed it up. Just a sandbox with roughly a thousand independent actors constantly simulated and living their life, and you're one of them with no special powers. No scripted setpieces, no quests, no main plot to follow, just an endless sandbox with an "endpoint" (wish granter / cat-lon) that isn't really a finale.
>>
>>536791894
there's some story stuff about the first empire iirc but thats more lore than a plot yeah
>>
>>536789497
I tried it a week ago, wasted like 10 hours on this jank. stopped when I read that you can't kill unconscious enemies (and have to let them lay there, rest, get up and run away) because the dev is autistic and if player can do this, he'd have to program enemies to also do this (even though you can't enslave enemies or eat them like they can)
to answer you question the picrel AI summary is as retarded as they and its users tend to be
>>
>>536792474
Yeah, there are scattered pieces of lore, worldbuilding, scarce information. Stuff that takes you through progressively harder areas and eventually leads to Cat-Lon's exile.
Quite similar to the original STALKER concept, except you are the only actor chasing that information instead of every stalker trying his luck on the same task.
>>
>>536793117
this is the first I'm hearing of the stalker thing and it sounds like a shame it got canned

>>
>>536792808
Anon, be aware this is a solo dev 12 year project that came to fruition, and he started work on a kenshi prequel. So just go check the moddb for it, there are tons of genuinely good qol mods that add what you want.
>>
>>536793564
>the idea for the newest one?
No, I mean the game concept as it was around 2003-2004 before THQ got interested and became the publisher. A few years before the first game's release in 2007.
STALKER went through many iterations and ideas before release though, but that was the final concept at the time the game was pitched to publishers.
At first the game didn't even have anything to do with Roadside Picnic / Stalker.
And the first iteration of the Stalker idea was going to take place in Crimean NPP rather than Chernobyl NPP.
>>
>>536792474
The one detail in the world building and vague comment from skeletons that I liked the most is how its heavily implied the huge lasers in Venge are actually the second part of a planetary defense satellite system, and the fallen satellite nearby aka "the eye" is the aiming satellite that got sabotaged into a catastrophic reentry, but rather than destroying the system it bugged out and constantly fire at what it assume is the target the "eye" is looking at.

But the world knowledge has devolved so much only skeletons remember. Neat world building imo.
>>
>>536789497
>like Outward
Outward is a completely different type of game, firstly it's an open ended ARPG with tons of build variety, then it comes with light survival mechanics. Excellent, excellent game that I would highly recommend, though there's a few mods I'd recommend even a first timer, let me know if you want my recs.

Kenshi though is even more open ended, there's lore and characters, but no storyline. You have to make your own fun, no guidance by the game, Outward sets you along the right path, Kenshi plops you into the wasteland with nothing but some tutorial docs. It's gameplay reminds me of Total War but with characters instead, but you're not controlling hero units, just bums who need to be trained with the games insane grind. Seriously, you need to game the grind for Kenshi if you want to make meaningful progress, increasing the XP gain rate in the games modding tool isn't a bad idea either. I'd hesitantly recommend it, it's not as good as people say, endgame is lacking, squad play is a nightmarish grind, and it's even more of a wiki game than Outward is.
>>
>>536794879
I loved Outward, character building is very fun there, I tried so many builds. It really needs UI enhancing mod though.

MP2 had a really nasty spot. It was right after an early boss that unlocked the ball boost. The fight itself was kinda hard and you had no HP and upgrades that early. When the fight ended there was no light zone in the arena and the only healing was whatever the boss dropped. In that situation you had to figure out how to use the new ability on the area to escape with whatever health you had remaining.

>You physically can't get "spoiled" to the point of being unable to enjoy the game.
I personally derived a lot of enjoyment of finding new areas with new aesthetics in HK.
So if someone showed me a screenshot from the most interesting looking part of each area and some enemy designs that would have definitely reduced my enjoyment of the game and I'm assuming it would be the same for SilkSong

But I still think it's silly this video exists. I assume there is a market for it, hence why the guy made it, but if a person needs a video to explain to you on how to not click on shit related to a game and maybe reduce your exposure to online spaces where said game might be discussed they're a bit of an idiot.

Brutal doom on one of the highest difficulty, some of the later room in base doom definitely werent balanced with being potentially killed so easily and at times I felt like ripping my air out, but the catharsis when finally beating a tough as hell room was worth the effort. >difficulty selections
What is the /indie/ opinion on this as a concept?
You see a lot of post about hard-modes and such, but I always prefer when there is just a standard difficulty. It removes any doubt as to the intended experience and makes things more rewarding.
With multiple difficulties to chose from, one level is going to be the 'best' experience and all others will be inferior. So you have to guess, and face the chance that you get a less enjoyable first time with the game. Plus, the games without difficult selection are generally more polished and balanced.
It is not so bad in cases where there is just one 'hard mode' explicitly intended for players who have mastered the game, because the overall experience can still be designed around 'normal'. Three difficulty levels muddy the waters, more than that is cancer.
The ideal implementation is challenge modes like >>536846689 which introduce a specific twist to the standard gameplay and organically change the difficulty.
>>
>>536883691
> but I always prefer when there is just a standard difficulty.
i second this
I would rather have a singular polished and balanced difficulty than half a dozen of poorly balanced choices. Time spent adjusting different difficulties is time not spent making the core of the game better.
And i prefer when hardmode is completely optional and doesn't require you to start a new campaign or anything like that. You just switch it on in settings and there are no score/story/campaign differences - game is just harder.
>>
>>536883691
"intended experience" is always Normal Mode. "Easy" mode adds cheats to (You), and "Hard" mode adds cheats to (You)r enemies.
>>
>>536889095
The problem is that the modern normal mode is typically just an easy mode and the mode actually named easy is braindead retard mode.
>>
>>536889840
No, the problem is that Indie games nowadays don't have Easy mode, they have straight-up invulnerability mode instead. Which is fine, I'm okay with cheats (even if it's not fashionable to call them that), but I would prefer more fine grained control than all-or-nothing.

They aren't. They're very simple, in fact.
Assuming all difficulties are unlocked from the start, pick either hard (for 3+ difficulty levels) or the second hardest available (for over 7 difficulty levels). its a managing game about a not-scp facility, you just send guys to work on the monsters (abnormalities) and send them to fight treats in the corridors, there are 4 types of work that your units can perform with the abnos and every single abno has its own lore and its own rules about how it behaves, these need to be learned by trial and error, observation and working with these abnos to unlock in-game info about them. Some abnos can escape from their rooms and your units need to fight them sometimes, playing around their gimmicks, besides this there are other monsters that spawn from time to time, that you also need to fight.

getting distracted for a moment or making one wrong choice can result in a bunch of people dying, restarting the whole day and losing a lot of time and progress. it takes ages to finish if you care about unlocking all the info about all monsters and some of the late game challenges/bosses are brutal.

Ill be fair with you its a bullshit meme area, the enemies are invincible, you gotta find some hidden buttons (3 iirc) to unlock the way out. The trick is to stay out of the water, any movement trigger inside water trigger them the fuck out and they're effectively invisible tarrasques.

If you want a cheesy base enemies literally cant spawn into just set up in the small maintenance room behind the forgemaster, it is small but is super safe.

How much freedom of choice do you need exactly? Because you're asking for a lot. As you have more items and freedom of choice in a game, the number of possibilities that the game dev has to account for goes up exponentially.

How close are things like the King's Quest games to what you're looking for, and other such text based adventure games?
>>
>>536889095
>>536889840
>>536890107
The real problem is that any of these could be true and you have no idea of knowing which it is. Depending on the game 'normal' can be for people new to the game, or new to the whole genre, or people who have never played a game in their life. And it doesn't help that sometimes thee 'intended' way is to replay the game on successively higher difficulties because the devs couldn't make an actual difficulty curve.

>no reason not to have a difficulty select or modifiers
Was this close to replying with some with an autistic spiel about hw that doesn't apply to most games but you probably know that and are not talking about those. You might like the Ace Combat series. They're the only reason that messed up wand works at all (assuming the chainsaw works)
Chainsaw sets the wand's cast delay to 0 when it is cast, so it has to be the last spell.

Do you remember seeing a "the gods are very impressed with you" message when messing with that wand?
Anyways, you're just making accidental wisps (infinite lifetime spells) out of the teleport bolts.
Reduce lifetime (-42 to lifetime) and teleport bolt (random 33-47 lifetime) sometimes results in -1 lifetime which makes the spell have infinite duration.

It's all management. You assign jobs to your slaves. You improve your slaves through training, drugs and surgery. You pick the most capable slaves for leadership roles. You spend money to upgrade your arcology, and amass reputation to unlock more upgrades.
At some point you'll hopefully discover the rules manager and learn to automate rote tasks, like sending sick slaves to recover in the clinic, and putting fat slaves on a diet. Unless you're into that, in which case you can put thin slaves on a fattening diet.
Once you're satisfied that all your slaves are set to do what they're supposed to, you end your turn and the game generates a massive report on everything that happens over the next week. You read or skim through it, and then you're given some random events like a slave got a nickname, or a slave has a bad dream, or some monarchy somewhere in the world has been overthrown and you have an opportunity to enslave princess.
There's technically things to manage other than sex slaves, like you're paid rents on your arcology depending on how much of it you own, but it's really just background. The game revolves around the sex slaves. I'd recommend enabling the security expansion mod, it adds invading armies that sometimes attack your arcology. The battles aren't playable, you just gotta make sure your army numbers are bigger, but at least it's something to upgrade that isn't just another sex slave.

At least when DEI is corporate you can chalk it up to some faceless board of directors making a decision based on sales, when it's indie, it's someone's unfiltered dogshit opinion. Gotta learn to bite your tongue and ignore it if you're into indie vidya, more often then not the dev is a nutter.

And remember this whenever DEI/SJW's/Woke/LGBT comes up. These people are their own worst enemy, they abet the hate and scorn they receive by constantly making a fuss and acting like moral-less degenerates, think the insane discord profiles you see.
Ever meet a trans person who's normal? Who you can't even tell they're trans? I have, good, normal people who just want to fit in, not make a scene. The moment this shit was made about pride and inclusion and not acceptance and fitting in is the moment it was doomed. Hate how it seeps into video games even if I'm able to ignore it without crashing out.
>>
>>537037321
When it comes to indie games, there are two types:
1) Type 1: utopia. LGBTQIA+ is accepted by default in the game world. It's easy to tune it out as long as it does not include clunky "what are your pronouns" every time heroes meet someone new, and there's no lengthy expositions.
2) Type 2: winning the conflict: LGBTQIA+ is not accepted, they are woobies against the evil bla-bla-bla-phobic strawmen villains. Villains are then defeated, lectured and then murdered. It's very obnoxious, and pretty much impossible to tune out. Even if you agree with the message, the way it's written is so insufferable that you want to argue by reflex.

>>
>>537040343
In which context did they say that?
"Female Models" where in the game since the very beginning but I'm assuming you're talking about something else?
Also if they've changed their mind on that I would bet it's because they are a profit seeking company and they figured that the extra resources put into that would translate into more sales and be worth it. Not because the Jewish Lizard Elite told them to or whatever.
>>
>fake culture war discussion
congrats, you've fallen for the psyop. You are aware that the only people who couldn't be happier that you waste your time and energy being upset about how many gay characters are in a game, or that the game dares to ask you for your pronouns during character creation are the "elites" you claim to dislike so much?
Because while you think THOSE are real political issues they get away with shafting you left right and center.
I remember someone on here once called me a lefty for not being outraged at a game having Bodytype 1/2 in its character creation, I can't fathom how far gone you'd have to think like that.
>>
>>537041038
IIRC when Unity released and its multiplayer mode was just clones of the MC, they claimed it would be too much work to make a female character model and animations to add more visual distinctiveness.
They got clowned on because 3 Liberation had come out not too long ago and it had a female MC with a wealth of unique animations, while the Unity MC's animations were largely ported over from Black Flag/Rogue. And Syndicate, the next game in the series, had a male/female dual protag setup anyway.
>>
>>537041937
I guess it makes sense considering the multiplayer was such a minor part of the game Actually that just made me remember they had playable female characters as far back as the Multiplayer of Brotherhood
>Unity MC's animations were largely ported over from Black Flag/Rogue
Really? I remember Unity's animations looking completely different/ having lots of new stuff compared to the previous games.
But yeah, I have a hard time believing that a company like Ubisoft would lift a finger to do anything for any reason other than money or PR (which translates to money in the longer run)

Exactly. The pronouns things were still enough to annoy me, but otherwise, it was relatively light on the whole thing, and the genderfluid thing is an integral part of the lore, and is even highlighted by Odile as being unusual and specific to the country, with her explaining that in her country, bio-engineering would get you in jail.

Nah that's totally understandable, sometimes you want to play games for escapism and don't want to be reminded of real world issues.
The funny thing is just that from what I've seen many people who say "I don't want politics in my game" actually mean "I don't want politics I disagree with in my games" and then also by "politics" they just mean that there is a black playable character or a pronoun option during character creation or some trivial shit like that. Since they'll be more than happy to play games with overt political messaging as long as it's not something they are offended by.

I mean, I don't mind politics, but it has to be done in a subtle way. A game like Final Fantasy XIV makes it perfectly clear that diversity is strength but they never say it, they just have all kind of people pooling their strength together to defeat an Empire who looks down on magic, and there's an empire in the lore that is very fondely remembered for its approach of "everyone has a role and a thing they're good at", and the emperor is still almost worshipped.
Then you have... the worst example I can think of is that tabletop game, Vampire the Requiem, who has pic related. This goes beyond "fascism doesn't work in-universe because yadda yadda", this is downright virtue-signalling.

And I hate that whenever I complain about shit like this in my games, all the answers I get are "oh wow so you defend fascism hu???? well i'll doxx you and if i meet you irl i'll beat you up because being a fascist means you're no longer entitled to basic human rights".

No, small ships don't work outside of bullying the watch and even they have things that can hit you.
>>537048896
He asked for something combat effective. Melee ships, especially small ones, are an absolute meme and speed/evasion become completely meaningless past the DWG and OW when everyone starts getting powerd weapons. Unless you're doing seafloor PAC/Missle cheese with submarines, spaced armor and a shit load of CIWS are mandatory if you want to be able to fight anything more threatening than easy craft

>have no idea how to even start this puzzle
>? bombs could be anything
>figure out one single point of contradiction and it all gracefully falls into place
>best puzzle yet
>completing it unlocks all the remaining puzzles until the end
So this is where the game begins for real. If it keeps up this might not just be this years puzzle game, it could be alongside the all-time greats.
Anyway, what other brain-games is /indie/ playing at the moment, and are there any upcoming titles you have high hopes for?
>>
>>537098843
i think my entry point was
bottom row only has one wall so all its dudes are either hit by the left or right bomb
so the bombs in row 8 can't hit any of the dudes in row 10
so your two walls in row 9 are already set
same for the right column and top row. and left most column should fall into place too after this

Does this have NG+? I'm still on my 1st playthrough, but I plan on doing a 2nd one afterwards and don't want to deal with all the cumbersome grinding again. Even just porting over the skills would be a godsend.
>>
>>537114129
I have no idea, sorry. I was saying that in jest because I just crafted a complicated item and I was overjoyed.
>>
>>537114667
Thanks anyway. I'll figure it out when I reach the ending then, since I'm pretty sure I'm still somewhere around the early midgame. Fuck the Symphonists btw. I take regular trips to Flathill and these tanky motherfuckers ALWAYS get in the way. I probably have to set up some traps to quickly take them out, but that also requires grinding in the fucking world to GET enough mats for it.

Nah, you are thinking of a different one, the starting point in this one is the two inner columns which only have 1 wall each, so there are only 2 ways to stop the inner bombs from hitting each other.

probably also valid but i mean like this. which you can derive from the center bombs not being able to hit any of the outer bombs on the top, right and bottom. and from there the left 2 columns, then the top row, then the center columns and then pretty much the entire thing collapses. don't even need to look at the columns with 1s in the center.

replaying the og, bought a controller for the "intended experience"
it feels so ass, do console freaks really live like this?
I got used to it after a while and I have to admit it's relaxing to be able to sit back and not need a flat surface underneath your hands. But I still switch to the mouse and keyboard when the platforming challenges get hard.
>>
>>537147552
also why the fuck am I here, I was supposed to be on egg. motherfucker gave me the wrong directions.
>>
>>537147552
>it feels so ass, do console freaks really live like this?
Really?
I'm an MKB player who uses a controler for certain games and HK is definitely a controller game for me. Doing fine adjustments with a stick sounds a lot easier than by tapping a movement key, no?
>>
>>537147882
Most of the ass reaction was knee jerk because of the switch, I'm mostly ok with it now.
But it's probably too late to ever really be comfortable with it, keyboard feels precise and controller feels floaty and that's probably just ingrained in me by now.
>>
>>537147552
I feel like my hands are too big for a controller, I tried to play sekiro with one and it was very uncomfortable
kbd+mouse felt much better for that game, HK, super meat boy, anything really (except ryza, but I think the devs just gave up on kbd/mouse controls)

There are so many genshit inspired games in this mix all game show.
This shit ain't obscure and weird enough for me.
