>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as A Hat in Time, Animal Well, Baba Is You, Balatro, Battle Brothers, Cave Story, Celeste, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, Dead Cells, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hades, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hotline Miami, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Monster Train, Noita, Nuclear Throne, OFF, OneShot, Rain World, Shovel Knight, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, The Witness, Void Stranger, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

I'm trying to enjoy AI War 2, but god damn the AI is, ironically, really fucking stupid. Weak ships are more than happy to dive out of the forcefield bubble and get instantly vaporized, but if I enable stop-to-shoot, they'll stop before they're even in range and just sit there doing nothing while getting pummeled.

Depends on the day. I feel people do play games more often than not, but there are a few characters I can think of, who you can easily trigger into schizo posting for a bit. Though some of it is at least game related
>>
>>537243698
Try Empyrion before No Man's Sky if you haven't yet.
>>
>>537243885
Interesting, I'll consider it.
Thing is I'm just not a fan of procedural generation in these types of games. I'd take a single solar system game with lots of handcrafted content plus some procedural filler that would probably be necessary to make it work over a million billion planets any day.
It's fine for games like factorio or Vintage Story, where the goal is less on exploration and more on building your base at least for me. But when watching someone play Starfield for example I couldn't help but notice how none of the places felt "real".
Case in point Satisfactory has a handcrafted world but I honestly couldn't care less, since exploration isn't the goal of that game.
>>
>>537244206
Empyrion (especially modded) has a shit ton of handcrafted POIs to raid and explore on different planets, unlike NMS where literally every planet has the same POIs and every planet feels samey due to no meaningful gameplay mechanics and limitations.
Empyrion is also pretty big on basebuilding, since you build vessels out of lego blocks including your capital ship that's your primary home and does everything. In a sense basebuilding is far more important than in MC/VS. In those games a dirt hovel is sufficient and the rest is just aesthetics without function.
>>
>>537244206
Maybe try the Minecraft modpack Blightfall? Exploration and base building in equal measure, on a handcrafted world.
>>
>>537215292

As an unrelated sidenote, im kind of shocked how good vintage story is, like superficially its a minecraft clone but the mechanics within and their interactions were a breath of fresh air, the prospecting reminded me of the good ol days back when I learned how to do triangulation on a map and the depths of thing was surprising, liked how you have to do multiple things to unlock metal forging, every new addition to your base feel like an actual upgrade or improvement.

What is Persona even about? All I know is that it has been running for a long time, peoples shoot themselves all the time for some reason and you fight oc donut steel version of mythological beings, both from real life religion and fictional literary verse.
>>
>>537270905
its an anthology like final fantasy where each game does its own thing, shooting yourself only happens in P3.
but generally yeah its about living a double life as a regular guy who goes to school but also has to fight demons using his persona, a manifestation of your psyche which is based on mythos and fiction. its half "slice of life sim visual novel" and half "JRPG where you kill god"
>>
I have 600 hours almost in my summer car and my god no other driving game has felt this good
>>
>>537270905
>What is Persona even about?
JRPG set in modern times, typically you're acting as a hidden force for good using "personas", aka literally summoning manifestations of your personality and spirit represented as mythological creatures and figures, and a giant cock riding a chariot, in order to fight some evil force that usually winds up in you fighting god or something by the end of it. Technically anybody can awaken their persona and fight but most don't.

Shooting yourself is only in the 3rd game and it's not *actually* shooting yourself that's just how they summon their persona there.

It's really fun. Only played P3, P4 and P5, but the improvement between them is noticeable, P5 especially is really fucking good.

It's a game where you play as a teenager and at night you go do teenager stuff like shooting yourself, jumping in TVs or armed robbery. But it's ok because you're the hero. Also you're friend with igor from frankenstein and you use stands like a jojo character except they're demon except they're not they're actually the idea of demons in the collective unconsciousness except some are not demons they're just fictional characters. Also the butterflies are watching...

no, it's more of a soldat but tactical and with a lot more physics
ttks are very low and it's easy to die in open areas, so you have to use everything for your advantage, while weapons have recoil patterns based on how they actually push the gun hitbox in your hands
the only real progression is unlocking additional characters by swapping into them mid-level

Is there a way to download workshop mods in this day and age?

Workshop downloader fails for most (all?) games due to steamworks API being a nigger.
Smods apparently no longer works, the AWS instance hosting the files just returns a no key error.
>>
>>537367448
Workshop downloader works for me, it's just hit or miss because anonymous downloads are a per-game basis and the devs have to opt in to it. Smods is also working fine. Checked them both as I was typing this.
Sounds like you're just having a skill issue.

Alright, what one of you mentioned Space Station 14 (& 13) last thread? I recently picked it up too and holy shit, I can't stop playing it, don't have any good clips to share though. Unique in a crazy good way, rounds can be insanely tense, insanely funny, or very memorable in other ways. Theres so much stuff that can go wrong that makes it exciting.

What I like about the game is that it's gatekept not by it's players, but by it's mechanics. Have never, ever played a game like this, I've been relentlessly watching tutorial videos, testing out stuff in a SP server, and reading the wiki. There's not a learning curve, there's a learning cliff face, seems to filter out most of the tards. You really, REALLY gotta study up on the games mechanics and systems

Though there's still the they/them crazies and SJW babies to content with, it's not in your face, if you're not some stunted /pol/ack you should be able to ignore it. Plus, the main devs don't seem to be fans of ERP so those degenerates get weeded out. Though I'm hesitant to recommend it because of the sheer scale of learning the game, still very enjoyable.

Watered down, oversimplified job simulator at that
You don't have:
>proper intents that are replaced by shitty combat mode that completely destroyed the depth of unarmed fights (combat-focused servers used to have 4 intents + 4 combat stances + blocks/dodge switch + character specific combat abilities)
>watered down engineering that barely has any real consequences if you fuck it up. servers used to have 3-4 different power generation methods, that could always be assembled from the ground up, heavily modified and sometimes even combined (e.g. SM to TEG gas exchange) with a complex wiring system (32 individual states in which every piece of wire could be, with multiple wires per tile)
>non-existent station lethals for sec that completely kill any kind of suspense of doing crime because you know that shitsecs literally can't kill you lol
>bay virology (5 stage viruses with dozens of different effects that require specific actions and knowledge in order to create lethal or helpful infections) or tg botanics (growing intelligent trees that are controlled by other players as your servants or selecting a fruit that instantly stops your heart if consumed). if you have those - they're extremely oversimplified and nerfed to disallow fun
>extremely boring sci that doesn't actually require you to acquire any rare materials for research, do actual experiments or disassembling alien technology. it's just an idle game that makes numbers go up
>maxcaps nerfed and designed specifically in a way to make them impossible to make without notifying admins
>no integrated circuits that allowed you to create absolutely insane shit like fully automated drones with custom logic, simple computers or smart bombs

I've wanted to try a playthrough with much harder settings and longer months, but the game balance just doesn't seem to be made for it. I imagine that I'd get to steel super fast and then wait for absolute ages for the first winter with the best gear and then get bored. I could set durability lower, increase food requirements, fuck with spoilage time, and more, but I feel like it would just increase tedium rather than meaningfully make the game harder. I've never had the creativity or drive in any game to make a "nice" looking base or build things just for the sake of building them. I'd always use cheesy tactics and bare-minimum effort almost every way. Am I supposed to pretend I don't know the best way to do things and purposefully gimp myself, to make up arbitrary checklists of things I need to do before I am allowed to progress?
How the hell do you guys play games like vintage story or even minecraft and decide to keep playing long after you've gotten the best gear, a functional base, etc?

Yeah, I'm sad how fast you can progress after your first playthrough, once you know what you're doing.
On my current world I've decided to stick at least a year with each "tech level" so I won't bother with copper until at least next in-game spring, so I can focus on agriculture and maybe build a mound as a megastructure for fun.
Also I want to migrate every time I get enough new tech, just because I hate tearing down old builds but also don't want my bronze age mudhut next to my medieval cottage.
>with much harder settings and longer months
maybe just settle in harsher climates if you want a challenge?
>make up arbitrary checklists of things I need to do before I am allowed to progress?
>How the hell do you guys play games like vintage story or even minecraft and decide to keep playing long after you've gotten the best gear, a functional base, etc?
I mean it is a mindset thing I think. I totally get if that's not your thing, but I derive a lot of fun from making nice looking and time period appropriate bases and sacrifice functionality for aesthetics.
Though I'm glad about how VS at least has more incentive to build stuff over MC. Like in Minecraft at least when I played in Beta 1.7 you could get a functional base in a 3x3 square plus any room you need for storage. Everyhting beyond that was just you being creative for shits and giggles.
But in VS if you build a blacksmithy, it has an actual purpose, since all the crafting stations, molds etc do take up space so it does make sense to build an extra room or building for that.

Is there a good arpg/roguelike? I used to do "ironman"s all the time in Diablo 2 before I knew what a roguelike was, before the concept existed. A game that had that kind of gameplay loop would be crazy if done well.

Shing megame tensei, as far as I know, was a series of games about demons and gods in eire dystopian urban scenarios where they have became common place.

Then, someone had the brillant idea of a making a jrpg about teens going on adventures in everyday urban scenarios to appeal to kids, they adapted the SMT lore to it, gave superpowers to the teenager characthers and slapped pop songs all over it.

Many of the supernatural demons based on mythos from SMT, now are materializations of some characther personality that can be summoned by the teens like stands in Jojo bizarre adventure.

To be honest copper should be a priority just because of the access to pickaxes, also mining is a good way to pass time during winter because you dont freeze to death in caverns or underground due to higher ambient temperature, and even simple copper armor is better than nothing if you try to hunt bigger animals like bears or mooses. It just unlock so much stuff that are just a straight up improvement. Aint for no reason copper forging took off so quickly during the early bronze age.

Of course of course. But it's a bit of a self imposed challenge type thing.
I just found out that my save is soft-fucked by the new update anyways. So it looks like I might be restarting anyways.
Everything seems to be perfectly fine, it's just that it's a little obvious which parts where generated before and after the update and it looks kinda ass.
I could mess around with pruning some chunks to try and fix it but I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

That was me, assuming you're playing 14 given you mentioned the devs dislike ERP. You're very right about the game having a crazy learning curve too, I've played it for awhile now and I still have yet to try medical as all the chemicals and dosages make me freeze up. Security is nothing compared to med despite what people say, convinced most people who play medical are actual doctors or chemists lol.

If you're just coming to master the games mechanics and systems, I'd recommend trying engineering, or security, or both. Sec is more RP focused but you gotta be half decent at combat and can't be some guns blazing tool that gets the whole department labeled as shitsec, and engi is fairly complex top but not as bad as medical, gotta keep track of the power and specific wires and the atmosphere if you take that role.

>survivalcraft slop
List of recently played survivalcraft slop that I played and is very good to okay:
>Icarus
Retarded setting, but charming. Addictive gameplay loop, both in roguelite and persistent world modes. Reminder that only 3 DLCs offer actual game content and the other DLCs are just decoration.
>7DTD
They turned it into some kind of roguelite mission based looting minigame, kinda meh and crafting recipes are a pain until you dump some hours into the game.
>Len's Island
Looks good on paper, kinda meh and uninspired gameplay loop and settings.
>Force of Nature 1 and 2
Very addictive gameplay loop, 2 maybe be longer than 1 and grinding in turned to eleven. But lots of QoL stuff and nice setting.
>Nightingale
Very nice setting. Okay gameplay loop carried by its art and design.
>Valheim
Don't understand the hype. Gameplay loop is very gated, building is meh and graphics are doodoo. Still enjoyable though.

>>537420209
Does the box work with chickens and pigs? If so hype if not shit. I can't be fucking asked to fence in chickens again.

>Retarded setting
Yeah that's what's been putting me off for the longest time, but maybe I'll finally bite. I just always thought it's a "your ship has crashed" type game and that's where the high to low-tech blend comes from. Was a bit disappointed to find out it's because you can't afford more high tech
>Nightingale
hehe, that's the on I was referencing in my original post. I've been vaguely interested in it since the first trailer, just not sure if it's worth my time and the mixed reviews aren't exactly encouraging.
>Valheim
Never quite clicked with me and also I'm the guy who constantly posts about not liking procedurally generated worlds in these types of games so that's been blocking me from playing that game too. I even got Enshrouded thinking it's similar enough to Valheim but with a handcrafted map, but that game has all sorts of issues to be honest.
>graphics are doodoo
I disagree on this though

Out of all the ones I recommended, I have more hours played in Icarus and Force of Nature 2. The maps are beautiful and handcrafted in Icarus, no procedurally generated.
I really really recommend Icarus if you like open world survival slop.

>I'm the guy who constantly posts about not liking procedurally generated worlds in these types of games
This genre practically gives itself to procgen worlds.

Also some more I played but earlier this year.

>Raft
You WILL get tired of fishing for resources. If you can stomach that it is a novel twist to the survival genre. Hope you like the sea.
>Forever Skies
It lags as fuck for some reason. Didn't finished it. Very few POIs so they are recycled a lot. Kinda meh. But the idea was good, maybe future updates makes it not lag as fuck.
>Nova Lands
Is survivalcraft enough to warrant a play. It is small and cute with a rather grindy mid to late game. Worth a pirate.

Post any other open world survival craft slop and we will see if I played it, and if not is always nice to add more of these games to my endless backlog.

A lot of the difficulty removed due the need to streamline the experience, you can still do things out of order but with less freedom than on PC, alot of Disco Elysium's content is segmented in "levels", meeting cuno is content that is tied to the hanged man level, as long as you are in that level you can't explore, while the day one exploration content is a level in it of itself and once is done, unless it's plot relevant you can't wander around again you just skip right into the content without travel
Torque dork for example (the thought) is unlocked just by picking the physical build and interacting with Kim's car.
The art also is less... bizarre? Because the PC game has the 3d world to give you a look of how characters look normally, they can use weird ass portraits, here everyone is depicted "properly" to how they actually look like

It's not that bad once you get a few nets on your raft. After that you only really need your hook for digging underwater. But, yeah the early game sucks.

>This genre practically gives itself to procgen worlds
Yeah I definitely see the appeal, but since The Forest and Subnautica are my entry to the genre (and the only games in it I've played), unless you count Minecraft and Vintage Story, I guess, I maybe just set myself to feeling like that should be the norm not the exception.

>Raft
I've almost bought it on a few occasions but it's the thing you said, I wondered if it wouldn't get boring too quickly since I assume you're literally stuck in your base for the majority of the game. Then again maybe that's the point if it drives you to constantly tweak your raft until it's the best it can be
>Forever Skies
Recently tried and refunded it. I was really put off by how blocky and ugly your airship looks. I don't think I blame the devs, I can't imagine it being easy making a modular building system for a vehicle like that, but it still didn't quite click for me.
Which is unfortunate because I really like the concept of mobile bases. I was absolutely in love with the big sub in subnautica.

>Taming deer

Pretty sure that IRL you cant really tame a deer, they're just too big and brainless. Like imagine a wild hare the size of a small horse, now try to contain that, the enclose would basically be a 20 feet high pallisade. Probably higher, as I worked with european fallow deers as to cut their woods (it was in a safari where we had to transfer them to a winter enclose and for it to be safer for them we needed to cut their antlers lets they would gore each others in panic, in fact the year I worked there 2 died from goring during the process) and these guys, which mind you are about half the size of whitetail deer (basically the deer everyone in NA know) l would jump so high they'd be able to put their head over the corridor walls to the squeeze chute, which was a good 12 feet above ground.

Like you could bait it into semi-tameable status, but they could easily escape anytime.

That reviewer is definitely mistaking skill issue for game design flaw if he's getting roadblocked on the first expedition and fretting over criminal rep. Even if the player doesn't take any measures to hide illicit material, the rate criminal rep builds up is so slow that it would take in-game weeks (tens of hours real time) of non-stop failure to reach a state where the Inquisitor will consider imprisoning you. It's nothing like Cultist Simulator, where the game overs can kind of sneak up on you, especially if you're new.
I feel like this reviewer got a little 'tistic about the crime rep, and that the "game over" state he reached after failing the first expedition is that he just gave up.

Probably still a smart move on your part to hold off for more polishing though. Compared to Cultist Simulator, there's less difficulty in decoding the narrative or figuring out the esoteric systems at play, but there's far more resource management and growth management, almost like a city builder or colony sim.

Reindeer, while ill admit are indeed cervidea related to the whitetail deer, are a specific case, as they are far more adapted to tundra environment (aka environment that are generally very flat, a mix of grass land and very thick coniferous forests) so they are less prone to jump over things in their path. But I cannot deny the job done by the Saami are commendable and impressive, they effectively managed to semi-tame cervideas, like honestly I'm genuinely impressed.

There is something familiar about that look, or rather, that expression.

Very interesting, but I doen't think this discussion is relevant. Might want to rein it in a little. We should talk about something elks.

im giving up on rusted moss. the gameplay was fun and i enjoyed the story but im so sick of metroidvanias and the combat was such a drag. i only picked up this one because the atmosphere is cool and i love umihara kawase, but those weren't enough to get me to bother finishing.

I want to start an island-locked save in Vintage Story to encourage building and using the new boats
But I'm afraid I'll grow too tired of just islands too quickly and the worldgen probably isn't nuanced enough to allow me no generate a world that lets me start on an island group in a big ocean, but also has some big continent I could reach.
I think it's either or
>>
>>537506045
This kind of stuff honestly sounds like a cool use for language models in the medium term future.
I hate how companies want to shoehorn that shit wherever it fits because it's the new trend, but I think describing the kind of world you would want to generate in a survival game in natural language and have it spit out some world generation settings for you would be an actually cool usecase

I have a distinct memory of being a retard and typing "jungle island" into a minecraft seed and actually getting one

Yeah, but letters and even space influence the seed, so it still works, right? They don't have to be numbers, correctamundo?

>>537506045
Fuck man. I'm too stuck in analysis paralysis of finding a good enough seed. I think I'll just give up on the idea and generate a normal world. Maybe bump up the ocean setting a little and that should be good enough

>Remember Valdis story is a thing
>Wow, that was a poorly designed game
>See the same devs made a brawler
>Assume the combat will be good, like Valdis, and since they've had a literal decade to improve, its design won't be ass-backwards
>The combat is worse
>The boss fights (the one thing Valdis did right) are the worst I've ever seen in a brawler
>The design choices are even more actively malicious
Its no wonder these guys games don't sell at all. Its impressive just how far out of the way they go to make every single aspect bad.

I appreciate it, I'm curious what "design choices" can be malicious. Stuff like putting the checkpoint way away from the gauntlet preceding a boss?

Wanted to settle in this valley at first, but it's very hard to navigate, is full of bears and a spider? and has few resources.
I guess it's going to be boring old plains again, as always. But I feel like anything other than plains is a pain in the ass to settle in this game. Many of the hilly areas have such steep slope that you can barely build anywhere. Maybe I'll come back and landscape some of it one day.

Anybody tried pic related? Was going to pick up the Switch version but apparently the big patch that just came out isn't coming for a while, so I will probably get the Steam version to play on the Deck. If anybody has played it, how well does it run? Don't know whether the new update is extremely important or if the pre-patch version is good too. Thanks, pals.
