For the longest while I was playing on easy just to learn everything
AND because someone said the AI still gets a small eco buff even on normal, not sure if that was true or if it still gets that handout in the current patch since that was way back in AoW4 launch
difficulty settings expanded since then to be more modular, and I got really used to enjoying the combat. Forced myself to play mystic potential culture and not rely on auto-resolve
now I'm a lot more confident in the game but still mainly just setup power fantasies for myself. Like, half my created civs are all underground societies since underground feels so fucking good after the Giant Kings dlc

I've been unfocused, because of a comment a friend made a while ago. Basically, he claimed you can put everything into D&D alignement, and I've been struck trying to put the different Battle Realms clans into this chart, because at first glance, it's simple:
- Dragon is Good Lawful,
- Serpent is Evil Lawful,
- Wolf is Good Unlawful,
- Lotus are Cunts.

But it doesn't work, because, in the case of the Dragon: at first glance, they're all honorable and chill as fuck, but when you take a look, the archers and spearmen are humble warriors while the Samurai is proud of his skill, but they are still all fanatics ready to murder the fuck out of you violently just you even present a danger, they won't wait for you to attack first.
So does that really work?
>>
>>538209241
>he claimed you can put everything into D&D alignement
that's retarded, people have been arguing over alignment for decades
people can't even agree to what alignment Batman would be, anything more complex than a saturday morning cartoon character isn't going to fit neatly in a 3x3 chart

None. The change from 25 was just that they wanted pop numbers to be high so it looked like planets had lots of people.
So next update they'll probably multiply the number by another 100. Then your new colonies will start with 10,000 settlers and your capital will start the game with 500,000 pops.
>>

Anons keep saying this but it doesn't seem as bad, to me. It slows down in late game, as it always does, but it doesn't repeatedly hang for a moment like it used to. Pop calculations seem to be done monthly rather than daily, like they used to.

Yes, mechanicus are less combat-inclined, but them being able to fight so well would raise the question of why they aren't the frontline of the Imperium instead of, well, the marines.
Here's a cutscene from this very same game series that shows how strong they are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa6F-DuVmIo
>>
>>538347341
>warriors only beat space marines because they outnumber them
ok
Also, consider the following:
it all depends from dices, so don't rely on freak accidents and lucky streaks to jauge of someone's strength. I once had a squad of termagaunts absolutely analhilating a squad of these dark eldars wyches in a single shooting phase.
>>
>>538347478
>because they outnumber them
They get back up after being shot. That's what gives them the "near-unstoppable metal tide" reputation that they had when they were a new faction. That's why the only surefire way to stop them is to deactivate their tombs/monoliths before they ever wake up.

But even in gameplay they're tough to kill, hence why they move so slowly as a balancing measure. Dawn of War Winter Assault's final mission is portrayed as, and plays out like a fucking nightmare because of that. It takes an imperial Titan just to stop a local mob of them... and now they're jobbers?

How do we solve the DLC problem?
>>
>>538469158
Hmm. Based on empire score fighting Alex looks like it'll be tougher, but logistically easier since your empire's core is right next to him. After a you capture a city of two from him you should have a relatively "safe" front line as he'll be attacking into lands that have no real effect on your production.

Lizzie'll be a bitch to fight solely because of distance. Wittenberg will force some attention west when you really want to expand into Daegu/Newcastle to bring the war on her turf. Luckily all the hills should help defending their initial push, but that's a lot of distance and chokepoints for you to cross to get into her core.

Either way, blood for the blood god.

>cant help but to play Aurora on lowest possible research speed because i hate the idea of some military models/generations not seeing combat
I hate that my fucking brain started to be this fucking autistic.
>>
>>538516581
It's the same thing for me when I play Rule the Waves 3 (which is coincidentally also a spreadsheet simulator but with quasi-RTS battles as well). I have to turn research speed all the way down because otherwise I'll end up constantly replacing and refitting ships because I got a new fire control or whatever, but even then I still use the separate option for slower heavier than air research because I want to play with big gun ships that tend to get sunk by planes pretty quickly.
>>
>>538516581
What if all weapon and armour upgrades were +# instead of a new laser, plasma, phaser, doomray?
All ships would effectively upgrade at once, regardless of design.
>>
>>538517275
Weirdest part is that i didnt use to be like that.
When i played Civ i was perfectly fine with the idea that the earliest combat units wont see much combat before upgrades, that they are merelt something that i meant to be obsolete soon and is purely for guarding early cities or defences against barbarians..
And now when i play Aurora i feel like i miss something when my 1st tier engine, conventional armour, barely can call it a warship corvette havent seen at least 10 battles.
Like i know that many warship types irl also never saw actual combat and got obsolete and replaced by newer shit but after few "missed" tech levels like that i get such intense restartitis that i mostly just restart the entire game...
Perspective of clearing the entire tech tree paralyzes me despite me never actually doing that in my life.
>>538517971
Thats exactly how it works in Aurora.
>>
>>538517971
That would be boring. It's much more interesting to get new components and then design ships around them and refit old designs with new stuff. The trick is getting the pacing right. You want new stuff often enough that you don't have to wait ages but at the same time you don't want it often enough that building existing designs feels like a waste cause "I will have the X soon anyways"

>>538516581
Try parallel research, it helps with this problem by "batching" few techs at a time making upgrades more natural and easier to perform.
>>
>>538510685
What problem? Im okay with games that have one or two dlc's that are of decent size. Only games with huge amounts of dlc's are a problem in my opinion.

Game idea: Coral Reef city builder.
You play as a sentient coral reef and have to grow tubes n shit and get fish to live in them. You have lots of specialised "buildings" to attract different species of fish. They're both population and resource because they have to eat each other.
It's also important to maintain an attractive look so you can get human tourists and collect their dropped cameras, phones and cash to upgrade your tech tree.

Maybe it's because they have been the top dog for so long they don't dare to take risks to make something truely new.
>>
>>538654435
That makes no sense, as civ 7 has the most significant changes since 1UPT, if they wanted to play it safe they would've stuck with the formula or copied a better received game than Humankind.
>>
>>538654435
Thats exactly the opposite of what they did though.
They took big risks, fucked with the formula too much and people hated it as soon as they announced it and people never stopped hating it.

That on its own was bad enough, the game releasing extremely stripped of features, polish and mechanics and coming off more as a "le fun competitive pvp game between le friends" than a legitimate 4X game was also bad enough of its own

Both of them together was an absolute carcrash
>>
>>538654435
I think you are confusing risk taking with complacency. They took enormous risks by deviating so massively off the most successful game in the series so far, even daring to copy a flop of a game with "bet we can do that better (we can't)" attitude. They were complacent because though thought they could release a broken game and fix it with DLC but even if the game wasn't heap of trash on a technical level and had polish of civ 6 it would have still been a failure because the risky core features they decided to go with were just bad.

On a more optimistic guess, natural turnover as old creative teams move on/retire and a new team gets the helm. It was nearly 9 years between 6 and 7, and they've obviously taken notice of how Amplitude has made its splash in 4X. They're juggling bold new ambitions, trying to keep franchise legacy/traditions, and responding to/aping other mechanics put forth by their competition.

But also keep in mind that basegame Civ is vastly different from final product Civ. They're going to change mechanics a lot as the years go by; hell, vanilla Civ V had powerful infinite city sprawl that got nerfed so hard that Brave New World Civ V has to deal with "Go Tradition, Go Tall, Five Cities Max (generally) or get fucked by happiness penalties." And that was only within 3 years. By the time 7 is done with the game will be hopefully be in a much better state.

Lastly, to paraphrase Sid Meier himself a lot of Civ players will find and stick with "their" Civ game. Whatever entry has mechanics that jive with them best will be the one they come back to regardless of whatever the newest/flashiest entry is. I'm guessing that small thought leads to Sid allowing a lot more risk to be taken with editing the formula, even if it's beyond the team'a abilities.

In the game I posted the problem stems from me not having a large enough economy to support a big enough army to actually attack him. You could befriend neighboring civs of the enemy to wage war with you but this game I was just too far gone to make an actual dent.

Extremely late reply but they changed the AI at some point and modelled it around the things so-called "competitive" players were doing. Not sure how much of that splashed over to the campaign but I do recall the highest difficulty AIs becoming annoying and necessitating organized build orders based on the map you were playing.
>>
Is there a point to using liberation wars? Won’t the ai just embrace one of their factions and basically negate the entire reason for going to war?
>>
>>538868983
Pretty much. The point is taking a large part of their territory with colonies in it, because that part will become a new loyal vassal empire with your ethics to you if you status quo instead of achieving the war goal.
>>

It's simpler then making a brand new vassal out of sectors and painstakingly gifting systems to it

Depends on how hyperspace works in a given series, I guess.
I was thinking it's more like pumping natural gas and oxygen into a turbine.
Except the supply of both is about as big as the universe, and there's no exhaust.
>>
>>538902775
Getting into hyperspace usually seems to take a lot of energy in most settings. Maybe you could charge your batteries while you were in there.

Depends on a lot of things.
Maybe the cost is mostly the initial opening, maybe it's mostly for the actual high-speed travel, maybe it's how long it's open, maybe it's the size of the rift...
I could see something like this.
A solar panel station mostly in hyperspace collecting the intense light. (and possibly other electromagnetic energy)
A cable goes through a very small gate and connects it to a microwave antenna in realspace.
>>
>>538910537
Isn't that more or less how the zero point modules worked in Stargate? Tapping energy from another universe and moving it to this one?
>>
>>538910783
Yes, but also no.
>>
>>538888236
Stratified. Also for some reason it was only the Enforcers who got that penalty, no other specialist or other job.
I did fix my issues by finally giving up and giving the species residence, raising up amenities and happiness enough to counteract the unhappy faggot factions for now. Lets me funnel out my main species pops to better worlds for them too. Though the enforcers thing was still an issue afterward until it suddenly magically disappeared.

>>539055713

>>
>>539052572
I think it's more to do with how tileless maps support more tactical and less strategic gameplay but making it easier to code is certainly a factor (especially making the AI easier to code). You aren't really supposed to focus on precise positioning of your units in 4x rather on production and overwhelming the enemy with a superior tech or proper counter.
I'm sure there are games that don't have tiles (like Aurora) but they are going to be pretty niche for that reason. RTS or total war or I dunno table top wargame simulators probably cover that niche better.
>>

Total War is probably the most popular "non-tile" 4x series.

"But our STOOOORY! Think of our amazing original STOOOOORY!"
Much like Elder Scrolls, Stellaris sits on it's throne not on merit but a near complete lack of competition. and it itself keeps sliding into STORY mode more and more so who knows how long that'll last. Wouldn't be surprised if they made a Stellaris 2 and it tried to grab the Endless Space 2 audience instead of leaning in on what made Stellaris popular, and you know they won't nearly be on ES2's level.

Space elevators (at least the conventional ones) have to have their center of mass above the geostationary (so practically the counterweight station has to be lot higher than that). A typical design has it going up to 3 times higher than geostationary (36 000km) such as 100 000km, for reference the circumference is only 40 000km. That being said only the part that has it's center of mass below the geostationary will actually fall down if the cable breaks, the rest will fly up and escape the gravity well or settle in new orbits. That could be almost all of it if it breaks just below the counterweight station or almost none of it if it breaks near the ground station. It should be noted that for Mars geostationary is lower than the circumference of the planet and same generally holds true for all smaller planets where an elevator is even possible with relatively little magic.
Basically the most likely problem spots either result in no cable hitting the ground or enough to wrap the planet several times (which it would due to the way the cable stays in tension essentially the entire time). Anywhere in between is possible due to things like meteor impacts on the cable or just random breakage as well.

He meant Endless Space 2 but I'll bite. The game was damn good, just so different from how RPGs are done that people have a hard time grasping how to even play. And it was probably too ambitious for the tech level and team scale leading to weird or repetitive design elements, and by the time those were upped the series had retreated into being a theme park esc game that loses features from game to game.
Everyone that "gets" it generally loves it, and it's nice to see younger gens appreciating it.

>>
>>539312285
So this means Stellaris is good now?
>>
>>539320343
If you didn't think so before then no but I do get to gleefully fuck with the AI.

Personally I think the biggest problem with Stellaris is the players inability to influence things across the galaxy when you get to the galactic politics phase. Like, you end up cattled in by people with closed borders while your friends get genocided on the other side of the galaxy.
>>
>>539320671
In my games, diplomacy becomes practically impossible because all the weaker empires start bending over and offering their eternal vassalage to bigger ones. You can't negotiate with them any more after that. If one person decides he doesn't like you, all his allies hate you, too. Wars wind up being you against 10 others.
Fun if you're going warlike, though.
>>
>>539321381
Theoretically this should allow you to stop them doing that, united the smaller ones and turning the bigger ones against each other.
We've yet to see if it actually works though.
>>
>>539321381
exacerbated by the biased spawns, there's going to be 1-2 empires on the other side of the galaxy without any neighbours so they can easily expand to immense size quickly, meanwhile the spawn algorithm will box the player in. so inevitably the mid-sized empires near the player will bow down to the massive ones on the other side of the galaxy that are too far to do anything about early.

I think there's a mod to disable this, you will need like 50% more starting empires for the same galaxy size for it not to feel completely empty though

Is X4 a 4X?
>>
>>539364568
By the time you get to mid-game, yeah. It morphs from a space sim to empire management. Well, it can - you can play it however you like - whether you want to control 1 ship or 10,000.
>>
>>539363920
it's okay I managed to rope the baras into ganging up on them after they bullied the greys
>>
>>539364223
I would say the mod that is most required is the one that unnerfs the player shipyards, that change kinda screwed up the entire economy just to nerf the player.
there's also the complete galaxy overhauls and rebalances which you might want to check out too.

modded or not the game is pretty shite honestly, I think some of the older X games are probably better if not nearly as polished.

>>539364141
first games controls are horrible and the graphics are way too tiny on a modern high res monitor.
second game is streamlined, easier to play, probably lacks some late game depth idk. the recon system is completely inexplicable and every fleet is tied to an "officer" capital ship.

both games are truly strange.
>>
>>539368685
>the older X games are probably better
X4 should be the best. Everything is there, and better than the other games.
But yeah for some reason it just doesn't feel right. There's something about it.
Sometimes I wonder if maybe the galaxy is just too crowded. But it's not like the others were any less so.

no actually one of the problems is the galaxy is completely separated. every faction is in their own little perfectly safe bubble where nothing ever happens and they never interact with each other. terrans and borons are particularly isolated.

I think this is a consequence of having to add a lot of them as optional DLC.

So I went full cloning on ascenscion and that back up clone thing is weird as fuck
My leader dies, the back-up clone spawns, but there's a new election anyway.
Everytime somebody on my council dies and gets replace by their clone I have to manually reassign them to the post.
They're also worse than the original due to the stacking clone debuff.
I really don't see how this is on par with going purity and just getting leaders that can easily be 200+ years old

The interdimensional NSA provides a very balanced 10 Influence and 50 Endgame Echoes, the special resource of this crisis.
Which is just as well, because the only other realistic way to gather it that I have right now is vassalizing other empires and turning them into disarmed "Security Zones", which is not very good guy behavior.
With 2000 echoes until tier 2 unlocks we'll be here for a while

How did your first contact events with your neighbors turn out?
Those can seriously influence starting relations
Also not just ethics, but their govt personality will also determine how open or aggressive they might be. Like, Democratic Crusaders just straight up hate everyone not democratic
Then there's shit like if they took Emnity Tradition early they'll do everything they can to try and start shit with neighbors
Theres a bunch of small factors that can just land you a hatin neighbor. Xenophile diplo tricks can help prevent it, sometimes

Hello, the next /vg/ League will start in about 2 months but before that, signups for friendlies will probably open SoonTM since they're usually at the end of September. Here is the list of teams who competed this past VGL, and if there are any teams you'd want to see /civ4xg/ play against then let me know. Teams will most likely be limited to 3 friendlies. The team page is here https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//civ4xg/ and at the bottom of the page is an infobox with links to the other teams if you want to read about them.

It's a fairly short time between now and when friendlies usually are so I was planning on using the same roster as was last used 5 years ago since I already have those 3D models ready. Between friendlies and the actual competition, I'm planning to open a roster poll where you all can vote on what players you'd want to see on the team. Until then, if anyone has a suggestion on players you'd want to see on the team, give me a (You) with them and I'll add them to the list of candidates. At a later date I'll post screenshots of all the players, the team's kits, music, and other details like that if you guys have any feedback or suggestions for those.

...engine-wise, it's shit, the game seem to be loaded in some weird internet browser window, so pressing F12 opens the console.

How is the latest update of Distant Worlds 2?
>>
Any news for the next OP?

No clue, haven't played it and currently waiting for Stellaris and Soase 2 DLC's to drop.

Now I fancy a nice calm game where you just trade with your neighbours instead of waging genocidal hyperwar.

One thing about DW2 i hate is how fucking resource hungry it is..
Biggest galaxy literally requires 16 cores and something like 48 gb ram...

damn, managed to turn it around this much and they still won a score victory
feels bad

still felt good to finally break their back after spending half the game fighting back and forth over that bit to the right of the galactic core

I could have gotten diplo victory if the bulrathi weren't selfish, I paid them like 10 trillion credits to vote for me but they didn't. I even voted for them to try and prevent the meklons from winning a score victory, but it was off by like 5 votes.

votes being population based favors the meklon far too much since they still have like half the pops in the galaxy even with that tiny bit left

I really hope there's a mod to fix the spawns because this is just dumb

>that tiny ass galaxy
Its even worse when you remember that each "system" there is just one two planets tops..
Only Aurora has a proper scale for this shit.
>>
>>539591728
Millions of star systems just completely ignored because they had no solid planets.
>>

>muh scale
shoo, enjoy your lategame lag and intractable micromanagement paradrone.

a lot of systems have 4 planets, and you can make even more out of asteroids with lategame tech.

gameplay wise this is about the right scale for 5-7 players.

SEEEEEEEEEEX

I LOVE SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEX

NTA but you can do scale and limited systems by setting it in one sector or star cluster, rather than the entire galaxy.
Then distances and travel time seem more reasonable, too.
