you're already doing well by keeping irl/4chan separate. In a very real way, this was a lesson taught by those early on the internet.

Separate personal/business. Both are important, but compartmentalize. Of course the corpos and three-letters already have you connected

Hot take: "juice" is overrated. If you don't have fun underlying gameplay, all you're doing is polishing a turd. You can't trick players into having fun.

games are a hierarchy of things
at the very bottom is the juice, like molecules
the primary gameplay puts them together into strands of DNA
which wrap into larger and larger outer loops

the juice is the jump
the gameplay loop is platforming
the secondary loop is levels
the tertiary loop is worlds

juice is the little elements of interaction between the player and the game
the gameplay loop is the action, the strategy, the dopamine
the secondary loop provides structure to a session of gameplay
the tertiary loop provides structure across sessions of gameplay
they are all important parts of a game

I don't get this attitude to be honest. I want my game to be good. I want it to be fine dining for people who want it. Eye opening for people first experiencing it, and comforting for people coming back. The idea that gamers and the like are the enemy I need to overcome is weird and alien to me. My biggest opponents are myself and my family. The former for being a wreck of hesitation and the latter for constantly using me as a support beam without letting me cultivate my own skills.

Given the values I have instilled my game with, it would be ignoble to create them through ignoble behavior, since I would be weaving a story that has no real world currency even if it's fun, like modern trpgs

Reaction time is useless.
What matters in action games is muscle memory and prediction.
A game that tests your biological limit on reaction timing is a trash game, but luckily most devs figured that one out.

This. Gamers don't mind the difficulty, it is what makes a game into a unique medium. There are posers, and inclusivity crowds that do, but only AAA business can pander to them, with limited success.

The important thing is to make difficulty a bog to navigate, not a solid wall to hold up people. If you're stuck, Elden Ring has Spirit Ashes, jar bombs, elemental damages, to switch up your tactic if you can't beat something. Also level-ups so you can just make things easier for you.

How long has your game been on Steam? The platform generally gives your game a boost of exposure initially, and then either tapers this off or increases it relation to your revenue generation. Most successful publishers do not rely solely on Steam's promotion algorithms. It's a best practice to promote your game to the best of your ability on external platforms regardless of the success it organically achieves on Steam.

Best way to look at it is to try to think like an arcade designer. You want to take the question of difficulty in your game very seriously and try to apply it deliberately across your entire game.

In the arcades, the business model required that games had a coin turnover rate.
If the game was too easy then people could just stay on the game all day on the same credit and the machine would never receive another quarter. However if the game was WAY too hard, like so hard that it just steals a quarter from the player, they'll get frustrated and say the game is bullshit and won't put in another quarter. You have to find a happy medium between these two states. But don't be afraid to pump the gas on difficulty a little bit either.

How would you implement armies on a Skyrim/Oblivion like? I want people to have the option to have their character travel solo, in a small group, or lead armies, but I feel that letting thousands of characters all on screen marching in formation and fighting each other in a premade perpetual world would kill performance.
Would a good compromise be having some soldiers guard a baggage train that acts as a spawner, alongside any performance preservation truck I can cram into the background?

Trying not to get discouraged but I have three game projects with Kasha in various stages of completion. Two are in prototype and one is in active development.

This is all with the main goal of getting to my 'main event' game GigaMaidens, a fighting game about giantesses, which I've had on the backburner since 2010.

I'm focusing on Kasha for now but I really want GM made. I'm not getting any younger, I'm turning 38 in December and it's eating away at my morale. Hope I can keep it together.

At 32x32 size, most styles basically boil down to whether you're doing japanese style with chibi proportions (bigger heads and eyes) or western style with smaller heads and eyes but more action figurey looking

But a part of it is also probably people following the same popular tutorials.

Well no worries dude at least this is just a hobby and you've got a career, a wife and a house... right?

It would be very sad if you were a lifelong neet, and were fixated on making a franchise of multiple games, simultaniously, around a newgrounds flash game lookin-ass character, AND a giantess fighting game? At this age while not being cris.

I mean, making a fighting game is bad enough because nobody plays fighting games outside of the established franchises, but making an extremely specific fetish themed fighting game is a sure sign that you need some type of psychological intervention.

input lag is the time between an input being pressed and the result actually being displayed on the screen (or audio I guess)
if your input processing is happening within the frame (and if it weren't, you'd be dropping frames) then there is no additional input lag from the code being slower. You're polling at the start of the frame and responding to it by the time is being rendered.

signals are retarded thoughever, they're like events but less useful. So if you want an event bus you have to write your own.

In order to trigger a method from a signal you have to have a reference to the object that fires the signal. Which I don't think is that useful. But Juan put it in the engine as a whole thing for some reason

If you needed a cash injection you could probably start an auteur AI porn patreon.
I know these exist but video generation is really good now, and there might be a niche in long-form videos where instead of a disjointed 5 second clip it's a coherent narrative with "cinematography". AI voice acting too. I'm positive it could generate some good money.

I'm not gonna do it myself because I don't want to attach my name to things like that but I'm throwing out the idea for any of you who would like to.

GM, thanks for all the kind comments yesterday.
Let's see this thing through to the end.

>Moku

Intriguing menu art.
Options are there but no video settings to adjust.
A 2D adventure RPG with survival mechanics? It supports multiple players, could actually be fun but no way to test.
A small intro for setup and we're left stranded on an island, bleeding, only a rusty pan as our weapon.
The game has tooltips indicating controls which is good but some of the control schemes seem ambiguous, especially the stick clicks with the arrow seem to indicate to pull down instead of clicking.
The loadout and status screens are rudimentary and hard to tell what is happening.
The pixel font for the button tooltips is all mangled.
Pause menu looks cool and has a map of the whole island, seems pretty yuge.
While the background music is nice it doesn't really match the tone of the game (placeholder I guess), the game also lacks SFX, no footstep sound, no ambient, interacting with most objects has no feedback.
I like the day cycle switching animation, it's well done but goes by too fast, you can't really look at the art.
A lot of the pixel art seems too simple compared to things like trees.
It's not clear what the 3 bars represent at the top.
The windup on each attack makes fighting a struggle, enemies hit pretty hard right out the gate.
It's best to avoid fighting early on.
Not really a fan of how the player character looks, the mirror to change appearance is a good idea.
Sometimes there is a bit too much info at once, the tooltips also should be condensed to not show a full sentence across the screen.
Overall, this is shaping up to be a pleasant game, I can see there's lots of work put into its systems already not many faults I can find besides the art being really rough atm. Since it shows the song name at the bottom consider adding a button to skip music tracks.

>Ninja Game

Been meaning to play this for a while.
No intro, menus are basic, no options to config anything.
Language option immediately changes language.
Doing the tutorial there are two paths to pick, only one should be available otherwise one could miss some stuff.
The controller tooltip image is too small imo (changing to crunchy graphics is a bit better).
There are a lot of controls and mechanics to be aware of, it might take some time to get used to.
Jumping while guarding still has a static animation.
The ambience is top notch, the footsteps, the hit sounds, every object and surface have distinctive sounds, very nice.
The dropkick is way too fun to use.
While there is no setup or story of any kind it's fairly obvious what you need to do if you played games before.
The slapstick humour is top notch, the enemies eating your bananas after you're dead is so funny.
Selecting and using items during combat is not ideal as you need to move away from the sticks.
The tactic to die and then revive once the danger is gone is awesome.
I'm having a lot of trouble remembering how to grab and knock people out so I just go guns blazing every fight.
Overall, fantastic game and idea, lives up to the fantasy of being a ninja, the style is charming. My nitpicks with it are the controls, how many moves you have to learn, selecting items is a pain. The game could really use a bit of setup down the line for why we're doing what we're doing, maybe voices for playable characters would be nice. It probably needs a bit more life, especially the environments, hidden stuff to find or collect. Dev should keep leaning and pushing further on the slapstick, but not so much that it becomes overbearing, a sort of very serious humour could do well I feel. Pitfalls is that it could quickly get tiring and repetitive without that, needs something to break up the monotony of the environments and combat, maybe some mini-game?

how do you set up some basic DRM thing with steam where it at least checks your steam ID and whether you own the game when starting it? for example even without something like Denuvo, most games attempt to open steam when you open the exe, if they were bought on steam. But for some indie games, you can simply copy paste the install folder, uninstall and refund the game, and then play it anyway because it's just an exe in a folder that calls nowhere else. you could do that with void stranger for example
>>
>>538510776
I wouldn't worry about that until 50k wishlists. and even then almost every game gets pirated, so it's not worth the effort.

>Bullet The Wizard

Another prototype game, this time shooting wizards with an MP5.
Still a very basic game of survivors-like.
Reached wave 20 before I had enough.
The wizards tend to clump up together so you can just coral them in a bunch then rotate the whole time around the bunch and shoot them until all are dead.
In the previous version you often accidentally picked an upgrade while shooting because it appeared out of nowhere, now there is a level up text before getting to pick an upgrade, however I still sometimes picked one by accident.
The way to do this it seems is to pause the game for a bit with nothing on screen but the level up animation so the player has time to come to a stop, and only then show the upgrades for picking.
Of course this is still a prototype but my ideas for it are more of everything, more enemies, more weapons, drops, items, explosions, things to collect, more environments, more music, more SFX. Go all out. Shooting is the main course so make it the most appetizing as well, weapons should feel visceral, too boring atm. Maybe come crazy movement like bunny hopping or wall running could make it really stand out. That's all I have to say really.

It's really not. Like anything it takes time to build a following and the skillset to sell something to that following. As in, expect at least 2 months of work minimum to get your first dollar, and then a couple more months to go past the 100 dollar mark unless you literally win the viral content lottery somehow. Everyone thinks "oh I'd make money easily if I prostituted myself" but 95% of OnlyFans accounts make less than $1000 a month so you just end up whoring yourself for minimum wage.

Take as example:
3 people tell you parry timing is too tight
You increase it

What version did they play? Is it still to tight? Maybe these 2 are just bad? Maybe they got influenced by prev 3 people reviews?
It can be confusing for creator what is actually being reviewed.

the whitepill of this is that there are so many people out there looking for entertainment, that if you manage to develop a niche community of supporters, you'll at least make enough money to continue funding development
so that's a plus
if you don't think your game has mass appeal, discordmaxx immediately

>the basis of marketing is "just make something people want lol"
not really, it's more like "make the offer seem so appealing people will run to buy it"
in that example of the incremental game, if you can make the game seem like it's a really good incremental game then people will buy it, but it's also good if you can actually deliver the feeling of it being good (it doesn't have actually be a really good incremental game, but it gets more complex over here, just see apple's marketing and how they can make people hyped just because they've added a dark mode or changed the UI a tiny bit lmao)

This is also what I found. As much as people like to shit on 2D, it's just so, so much faster to implement environmental interactions. I'd love to go back to 3D but it'd have to be as part of a collab so that we'd have enough people to actually make enough interaction content to make the world interesting.

that's a good point, the importance of value proposition is definitely something i forgot about
but, in my opinion, even in those cases, companies like apple still have a general understanding of what their consumer base generally prefers
if apple came out and tried promoting the technical details of the software and hardware of their phones, people just wouldn't care nearly as much as if they promoted something more visual and superficial
>apple promotes their new computer chips and faster processing speeds
>crowds snore, low interest
>apple promotes new phone colors and UI updates
>people lose their minds
i think you're 100% correct in that it's necessary to make the product your proposing seem "worth the money", but there still seems to be an element of "people care about X much more than they care about Y"
in the case of game development, your game can have super fun mechanics, great writing, cool characters, and a unique premise, and still underperform compared to a mobile game with flashy visuals, anime girls, and a battlepass with paywalled unlocks

my belief is that it's still possible for games of all genres to find success, but the more unique your game is, the longer it'll take to develop a supportive userbase
meanwhile if you develop something designed for mass appeal based on available data, you can almost immediately garner the, shallow, but still financially viable support of the general population

it's basically make your dream game and work for long term success, or make a data-based cashgrab and advertise it as aggressively as possible for short term returns

I'm going to throw out a heretical opinion and say that the "fanart" collages are actually bad for the community.
First, it's not actually all that useful for morale because it's not really fanart, it's basically a participation trophy.
Second, having participation trophies distracts the community from its actual goal: making good games. Participation trophies encourage participation for the sake of the trophy instead of focusing on making better games.
Third, making participation trophies does not improve the strength and health of the community. Good intra-community interaction should be trying out and giving feedback to each other's demos, in the pursuit of the goal of making better games. Spending time on making and talking about the participation trophies takes time away from the real community interactions.

That said, if anon wants to express themselves creatively by making participation trophies instead of working on their games, it's not like anyone can or should stop them.

i don't know exactly what you mean by this, but my nephew plays roblox a lot, and told me the most popular games normally use bots to inflate their player count, and pay large amounts of money to secure top placement on the "look for games" page
i also did research on the mobile games market, and the advertising budget required for big games to become and remain successful is absolutely gigantic
steam used to be a good platform to escape from this, since cool indie games were relatively easy to find, but now it seems like the steam promotion algorithm makes it difficult for more "humble" studios, people who don't want to spend tons of money or time building up support for their games, to reach the same level of popularity
thankfully itch is still a good website, i find tons of cool obscure games on there that i absolutely would not have found on steam

I managed to compute the SDF of the dungeon on a compute shader. At least I'm mostly there. Still some coordinate offsets to tackle. That's an important technical foundation for using the SDF for both ambient occlusion and SDF-based lighting and (soft) shadows. Doesn't look like much, but it's a big step. Using a compute shader with the proper resolution of the grid means it'll be lightning fast, making it possible to easily recompute on every frame for full dynamic lights

>Slide Game

Smol game window.
Game name is whatever.
Has a toggle for fullscreen and audio.
Splash/logo don't really match the palette of the rest of the game and menus.
Why isn't the PRESS START as sharp as the rest?
Pressing new game leads us instantly into game, no instructions for any buttons.
Pause menu exists and has the needed options.
Art is reminiscent of Zelda gameboy games.
Pressing R will reset the character back to the start of the room.
Pressing E or Enter to interact, it seems if we don't move we can still read books even if the book icon has disappeared.
Similar to Zelda it should play a little SFX when you fall down.
Room is reset to its initial state if we fall.
The page numbers in the books could probably be smaller and made within the pixelart (or removed) so they don't throw you off when reading.
Book and page art could be a lot nicer with ornaments and more detail.
Ran into a bug where a slide sound kept playing until I pressed R.
Controller isn't supported (essential for a game like this!).
I think I locked myself out in one of the rooms and had to restart.
I think the songs need better fade in/out transitions.
Overall, charming little puzzle game with potential to be a hit. It needs to soften some of its rough edges, the story/lore isn't that intriguing, it needs cute little button prompts at the start to show the controls, needs a nice recognizable logo (and name!) to aura farm on social media, needs a cool intro and setup before entering the game, some extras you can unlock, something to keep you engaged and playing. Pitfalls could be the repetitiveness of constantly doing puzzles, good in short burts, as well as how long the game is.

Higher tiers of foliage are only available in higher tier maps, and can be used for higher tier potions. I feel like it will not matter to the player if the mesh looks unique, since the game is top down and the color difference will communicate that it is not the exact "same".

fair, but i do believe the odds can be skewed in your favor if you're willing to investigate optimal marketing strategies
i assume if you can reliably identify themes that resonate with a viable audience, and can identify an effective method of informing this audience of the existence of your game, even if your game is slop by all industry standards, it can still find success
but this procedure is generally handled by publishers, not developers
i'm just saying, if your life was on the line, you'd probably be able to replicate at least a fraction of the success of these sorts of games

it's a game that looks like a studio ghibli production. it was made by 2 experienced devs 3+ years. the video from 3 years before release looks more or less like the final game, so it was probably longer.
gross revenue was around $300k, so assuming 3 years of development time, each developer earned around $30k/year from the game. that's less than burger flipper money.

My DD64 fan art, just missing the colors.

I tried to get all 85 entries in this picture. I didn't actually play all of them, just a couple that really interested me, so unfortunately some of the characters are taken from their game's banner art (I didn't want to dwell too much on it and I think this makes it easier for anyone to recognize all of them). Some games like Hypercoven feature one of the enemy characters too. I couldn't get everyone in sadly, due to them having almost no art or not being a good fit overall. The ones who didn't make it are honourably mentioned here:

Not games/early prototypes:
>TS WEBGL MULTIPLAYER
>FIRST GAME
>DUNGEON CRAWLER TEST
>DTF
>Chamoisee-Canvasback Prototype
>precomputed occlusion culling demo
>Bullet The Wizard
>JTF Prototype v.00000001
>MRPG
>doroboarashi onara shizopidoras

Real games that I couldn't get to fit:
>Dombia
>Project King - Prototype
>Cross Box Online (WIP)
>Journey Zero
>Mirrored Tanks
>Ultra Plane
>Planets For Sale
>Castella
>Heart of Evil
>GlitchPick
>Rixer
>Shanghai Gold

I hope I haven't excluded anyone, if I did, sorry, maybe I can add you to the collab when I color it.

>DefendAlice

Simple menu, credits button is antisocial.
Background music starts only after clicking a button.
Buttons are crunchy, options have the settings we need.
The Snake character doesn't seem to do anything.
Why are there so many buttons to open up the pause menu?
The art could really have benefited from a bit more effort.
What are the yellow squares for (the fruit I'm guessing)?
The fraction numbers don't make sense to me.
Lots of music variety, all sound good.
Didn't really understand the condition for getting a boon.
The boons screen really needs some art, the slot machine rolling is a great idea to expand upon.
That one planks on your back upgrade is more of a liability than any help.
Game is surprisingly engaging.
Overall, this has the makings of a successful game, the gameplay loop is immediately captivating and understood, there's good feedback to hitting the enemies, bouncing them against the walls is fun while also representing the danger of straying too far. I can see this game doing well, it needs really good art and controller support and that's already halfway to success, the needed systems are there.

Have you consider + and -
Great controls options because if you want to go up you just press + and if you want to go down you press -

Check camera rotation on the horizontal axis. If you're looking down invert the controls.

yes so relative to the player camera right? so if the left and right is relative to the camera, why isn't forward and backward?

Thanks for the review dude.

A lot of these points have been raised by others in the Itch comments. I've responded there in detail. tl;dr: you're right

Going to start building the fourth zone now. Looking to have that ready (and maybe more) for DD66. Eventually aiming for 8 zones each a similar size to this demo, hopefully will have enough variety to keep things engaging.

It's really best to do this ASAP. Like one of the first things you do in your game ASAP.
>menu
>loads levels
Well, if your game doesn't rely on a lot of [DontDestroyOnLoad] singletons it can be pretty easy, but it depends a lot on your game's architecture and how you do levels. In general, keep the number of scenes you load additively down to a minimum as in my experience scene management and game architecture in general gets a lot harder if you start caring about having multiple scenes loaded at once. So ideally, IMO, you should be able to run your game with a basic raw ass LoadScene() call.

All that said, my general game architecture these days:
>bootstrapper scene
This is an almost completely empty scene which ONLY contains things that you set as DontDestroyOnLoad, and things that will stay running the entire course of the game. For example, things that save and load player data, or whatever your scene management class is going to be called.
>main menu scene
What it says
>game levels
Ideally, you can structure your game such that you load individual levels, and all the things required to run the game at that level are built in (with a lot of prefabs for shared things like e.g. a player controller). The cleaner you can get away with loading a level and having it be totally self-sufficient, the easier it will be to develop your game.

I've been doing this for a long time now, and I think people with fancy ass scene loading shit are the midwit meme. My game on Steam has a crazy complex loading system, and I deeply regret it, and have come back around to the Unity tutorial level of "Just do a hard SceneManager.LoadScene()" as the best, cleanest, most developerproof method of organizing a game.
