Rogue Trader is more like a tv show. It has episodic adventures, an interesting cast, and the writing is mainly dialogue. With some editing it would be suitable for a set of scripts for a 24-episode show. Probably best split up over two seasons, with the escape from Cumrag as the first season finale

Nah, this slop was botted as fuck

Just look at the activity around the game to understand that this is true.
It’s not being discussed anywhere, videos about it aren’t getting views, and no one seems interested.
Games like RT and WOTR are discussed FAR more often, despite having a much smaller online presence. People are watching guides and builds on YouTube for those games, not for BG3.

Everything points to the fact that BG3’s online numbers on Steam were inflated by bots.
>>
>>538493634
make sure she's unarmed. if you are using turned based, then check what level of auto burn reduction you are using. higher levels of auto-burn require more actions(highest level requires 2 movement actions and a casting action)

If I'm being truthful, half the BG3 posts in this general are mine and I only make them when I want a quick (You). I have literally never seen that game seriously discussed here, its always used as bait. Kineticist makes you interact with the auto-cast functionality of the game that is entirely optional for everyone else (except Magus I think). Read the descriptions carefully and there's some good guides if you are still confused. Burn is a weird mechanic because it is both a penalty and bonus.

What do we think about Owlcat's zone/area design in Kingmaker where they made some areas that you're supposed to visit early also have high level enemies that you, realistically, have to come back later to deal with? I vividly remember the corner with either 2 bears or owlbears that were much higher level than the rest of the area. I don't remember Wrath or RT ever doing anything similar.

Is it a good or bad design choice?

They aren't broken for half the game. 1 attack a turn, which you will miss, until you unlock the good stuff. Unlimited greases is very strong, but not broken in the context of the game.
>>
>>538520051
> I control a C'tan shard
Too overrated. Many of them have already been destroyed on the battlefield, including by small Space Marine forces.
Its power level is lower than that of a Primarch, and a Solitaire is roughly equal in strength to a Primarch, so a shard can easily be destroyed by Nocturne.
>>
>>538519836
Kingmaker has the worst encounter design out of their games.
>here's the dungeon full of venomous insects at level 2
>here's a boss that chucks a fireball at your lvl 3 party first thing after cutscene
>here's a wererat ambush behind 30 dc trap
>here's a nigh unwinnable solo companion duel
>here's another one
etc.
>>
>>538519836
The timers do make it feel really fucking annoying to go all the way out to a place and then have to turn around because you can’t do an encounter yet.
>>
>>538519836
RPGs that don't have impossible or extremely hard fights scattered around that you should probably come back to later aren't immersive at all.
Wrath does have a few. Particularly the bonus fights in the Midnight Fane are better to come back to later.
>>
Even if you know how to deal with them swarms are still rage inducing. Kingmaker’s early swarm cave was like them crafting the ultimate encounter to get people to uninstall their game.

Firstly, he couldn’t do anything about the Eldar invasion, which swept through your protectorate in a bloody wave.
Secondly, he didn’t stop it, only delayed it, and only because Maw is already a barely navigable hell. Once your Rogue Trader dies of old age, your protectorate will be brutally reintegrated into the Imperium.
Not to mention, if the Golden Boy himself decided to show up earlier in person, no Nomos would have stopped him.
For an iconoclast, the only good ending is cooperating with Calcazar. In all other cases, everything you’ve worked for will be destroyed.
>>
>>538520481
The dungeon is much easier if you're a sorcerer with Burning Hands (thank fuck I usually first play a mage walkthrough in these kinds of games) OR you know to pack Molotov cocktails. Ratnook Hill is a high-calibre dick move I give you that. Of course it all depends on nuance: the implementation, moderate use, etc... But consider the opposite: A perfectly tailored theme-park experience where the world is somehow in total lock-step with the player's progression. That is very much *not* what I want.

Smoulderburn is a bit of a dickpunch but there's also indication that bad things went down and it would be unwise to sleep there, but yes that's mostly an asshole-DM moment.
I would defend the Technic League event though, especially because it's one of very few times that they (or any CRPG creator, really) offers up a "Losing can be interesting" scenario and I really love that. That was a very kino moment to me and really kept me engaged in the early game because of how cool I thought that story beat was after I lost to them, but then tracked them down.

Because it is. Anything that doesn't feel like roleplay is cheating. Stat dumping, using turn-based in RTWP, doing full respecs of characters that canonically are a certain class, its all cheating.

There's basically no way the imperium wouldn't be super chill with your protectorate. Yeah some puritan inquisitors would make a fuss but Calcazar would basically convince most radical inquisitors that you're on the level and as long as you're not being too heretical with your iconoclast:isms then it would be way too much effort to amount to any serious crusade launched on your ass. The Imperium wouldn't expend the resources necessary to take down a C'tan shielded radical inquisitor friendly protectorate that still worships the Emperor and pays its tithes.

BG2 is on-rails except for the very early game where you just get a ton of quests every time you turn a corner. Irenicus is also way over-valued as a villain.
BG1 is a satisfying open-world feeling adventure that captures the spirit of tabletop, and has a much better overall narrative that slowly emerges as you advance in the story.
BG2 character interactions are over-valued as well, and typically just come down to their caricature single trait hammered home with very little actual reactivity.

But it is extremely massive, under constant attack and with limited resources. Not to mention very corrupt and you're friends with a lord inquisitor who supports what you're doing. Relying only on themselves, they either had to build something new and different from the Imperium or fall to the horrors lurking in the darkness.

If Big E knew that some normal human pulled off a better deal than what he has going on with the Void Dragon (if on a lesser scale) hed be pretty impressed and then have a fucking anneurysm the rest of his Imperium forced that person and his star god son to pack up their toys and go home

Except it's not on-rails. You get to choose when you do what you want and you can stop to do something else at pretty much any time. You also get to choose *how* you do something, as you are generally given multiple story-driven options in conjunction with your excellent, expansive list of ways to go about things in the IE. Except there are more in BG2 because it's an evolved form of BG1. If it makes you "feel" like you should hurry on to progress the main story, then that's just a good job on BG2's part. Character interactions are a drop in the bucket. The game was made to be played with zero NPC companions. Everyone in the BG1 vs BG2 camp is so stupid. They are two different games made to be different so you get two different experiences. And thank God for that.
>>
>>538529501
>What happens
Plenty of things. Random little events, encounters, bits of quests here and there. I'm not going through it all.

>Were they truly essential to the story?
Of course not, but this is part of making a world that feels open and close to the tabletop experience.
Not everything in the world has its eyes on the protagonist, the geography of a region doesn't shift according to some story playing out within its bounds.
Head right to Nashkel then right to the bandits then right to the city if you'd like. Or, have some side adventures, if you prefer.
>>
>>538530281
By plenty of things do you mean trash mobs surrounding one point of interest in a big empty map
>>
>>538529834
Okay then I'm probably mixing it up with the generic iconoclast ending where it says it will take the fleet decades or centuries to reach your protectorate.
>created dimensional barriers
>cut the Koronus Expanse off from the Imperium
>left in isolation
This part seems a bit weird, no? Surely the C'tan could allow navigation through his own barrier, right?
>>
>>538530109
>Except it's not on-rails. You get to choose when you do what you want and you can stop to do something else at pretty much any time
That's a little disingenuous, it applies to any RPG. But, aside from the early game, so setting off to Spellhold and afterwards, is a pretty linear path.

>Everyone in the BG1 vs BG2 camp is so stupid. They are two different games made to be different so you get two different experiences. And thank God for that.
Completely agreed. I love both games of course, but I do think BG1 is an overall "better" (though the idea of a total order on the space of games is stupid) game, and certain elements of BG2 are over-praised.

I don't know too much about the Tau lore but wouldn't that strengthen my point rather than weaken it? The Tau is a very small empire and much weaker than the Imperium, no? >That's a little disingenuous
It is disingenuous to say BG2 is "on-rails", mate. Spellhold and the UD are such a tiny portion of the overall content in the game. You choose when you enter that portion and how long you stay. Then, *after* the UD, you can take your time doing whatever you want until you decide to end it. You can finish all the quests you'd like and you can even *return* to the UD if you want. Then you can choose to finish the campaign, but it's still not even "on-rails". I don't think you understand what that term really means.
>>
>>538531409
I don't really mind that though, the ending slides don't really contradict each other. It would take them decades/centuries to get through the warp storm AND then would have to figure out a way to cross the barrier. It's not like they would see the barrier created by nomos - if they could even see it at all - and be like okay we won't invade then without even trying first.
>>

Finishing quests after the UD and returning to the UD makes about as much sense as piddling around the Deadfire while Eothas is making his way to Ukaizo. Yes I'd call it a bit on-rails. Not strictly bringing the player A->B->C but if you actually follow the story it's very much like that.
Sure you *can* fuck around, but it makes much less sense than the fucking around you do in BG1.

Most CRPG channels have long abandoned BG3 because there are only about 2.5 builds in the entire game that they cycle through repeatedly.
In games like WOTR, there’s practically infinite room for build-crafting, with builds that feel great from level 1 and others that start breaking the game at level 15 but do it better than the rest.
That’s the charm of a game with deep build-crafting.

RT also has excellent build-crafting, but the game itself is too easy.

I actually prefer the skill breakpoints system over rolling dice for skillchecks. For example, in Fallout, you would have a speech check that requires 75 Speech skill, and if you had 50 speech skill, you couldn't do it. Likewise, if you did have 75 Speech skill, you wouldn't fail, you just meet the requirements and keep going. This still allows for build diversity and roleplaying.

I know dice rolling is a sacred cow and lots of people love it, but I actually think it's kind of stupid that I can be a thief will skill expertise lockpicking and 20 agility and everyone smiles and says "teehee you still have a 5% chance to fail :)" as if that's realistic or good gameplay. But if the lock just has a 20 lockpicking skill requirement, and you meet it or you don't. that better represents the realistic situation that a good lockpicker has just learned how that level of lock works and can apply his skillset. That's how life works.

This doesn't apply to combat, because in combat you're stressed and there's a time limit and everything is happening at once so there is a realistic chance that something goes wrong even if you're a master swordsman, you can still miss. But when you're just calmly staring at a locked chest or you're in a tavern having a good time talking to someone to convince, then

Related, something I wish more games would feature, is the simple "take 10" and "take 20" rules, where if there is no stress or time limit, a player may elect to take 10 minutes or take 20 minutes to lock in that dice roll without rolling, representing the fact that their character just takes it slow and approaches the problem methodologically and thus doesn't have to roll. This would solve my issue as well, but for some reason every game developer forgets this exists.

>But if the lock just has a 20 lockpicking skill requirement, and you meet it or you don't. that better represents the realistic situation that a good lockpicker has just learned how that level of lock works and can apply his skillset. That's how life works.
I think it's not as simple as that though. Two things come to mind: There really is a luck factor with 'chaotic' systems. Sometimes you're good at what you do and fumble, and sometimes you accidentally make something work that's typically beyond you.
The second issue is being a 19 lock-picker against a 20 lock. You have no chance in a million years. But then "magic happens" and now you're a 20 lock-picker, and now you can never fail.
Not to say what you're saying doesn't have merit, I also like those systems (about equally though with dice rolling, I'm fine with either, depends on implementation) but it's complicated and not as simple as "That's how life works."

>take 10
wait does that really stand for "take 10 minutes"? I didn't know that. I also like those kind of mechanics. Ritual casting as well, though more suited to tabletop where you can wave through 10min/hour instead of sitting with your character.
The passage of time in general is pretty fucked in CRPGs, resting during Lost Chapel/Drezen comes up a lot in here for one example. Finishing quests after the underdark in BG2 mentioned recently another.
I suppose at some point videogames have to draw a line as to what they'll consider out-of-scope and not part of the experience, where tabletop is a lot more flexible.

>>538540624
I can make guesses: Arue would be a half-elf CG cleric of Desna of course, Greybor would be a dwarf N slayer because do you think he'd not self-insert, Cam would be a human CE rogue with an edgy backstory who would steal from the party, Regill wouldn't play because that would not benefit the Crusade, and Nenio wants to play AD&D, specifically Dragonlance where she can roll a kender thief.

The very first blast of Halsin's seed into Shadowheart while you are asleep or leave them at camp, permanently changes her "scent."
This is a druid thing, he essentially completely marks her as his. Even though he allows you to be with her, the scent transformation is always there to remind both of you about his ownership of her.

No, you are entirely correct. Random skill check rolls is 100% garbage. While I have a no reloads ever policy when I play Baldur's Gate 1 or 2, I save scum failed skill rolls in Pathfinder because it is a garbage system. I has no comparison to random combat rolls because you can just attack again the next turn. And if the enemy saves against your spell you were counting on, it adds excitement and danger. A one time roll where you have a 5% minimum chance to fail is just garbage.
>>
>>538540671
>For example, in Fallout, you would have a speech check that requires 75 Speech skill, and if you had 50 speech skill, you couldn't do it. Likewise, if you did have 75 Speech skill, you wouldn't fail, you just meet the requirements and keep going. This still allows for build diversity and roleplaying.
Honestly? Stop talking.

>okay, it's not on-rails, but my imagination is too limited to like it
The story moves as quickly as you do. It's called Schrödinger's gun. Whatever problems you have with the freedom to do as you please within the game; know they exist entirely in your own head. If you can create them, then you can change them and imagine any number of possibilities. What you can't do is tell me that BG2 is on-rails because it absolutely lets you do whatever the fuck you want.

>Never to describe how a character says something
>It has its place, but overall it seems to lead to lazy and poor quality writing
Never once in the history of literature has this correlation been observed. Should all voice acting be delivered in absolute monotone as well? If there is no VA, then adding in frequent novel-like descriptions of mannerisms and delivery is a great idea.

>it absolutely lets you do whatever the fuck you want.
Let me explore the land between Athkatla and Nalia's Keep.
Oh, can't? Or anywhere else, just visit the points on the map? Hmm, doesn't sound like "absolutely lets you do whatever the fuck you want" to me.

Even more following the story, sure you can invent headcanon for why you're dragging your heels before going to Spellhold, or twiddling your thumbs doing errands after emerging from the Underdark, but the reality is this straight arrow:
Imoen taken -> (random quests around the area) -> Spellhold -> Underdark -> Final battle.

Whatever reasons you have to twiddle your thumbs against the story's trajectory; know they exist entirely in your own head.
>>

"Take 10" actually stands for getting a free 10 on a d20. At least in Pathfinder it doesn't take any longer than normal, but it's only possible when you're not under any time pressure. If you're good enough to open the lock on an average roll, and you're not stressed or distracted, then you can skip rolling and just assume you did an average job this time.
Take 20 gives you the equivalent of rolling a nat 20, but takes 20 times as long, and automatically triggers any penalties for failing the roll. It's just a way of streamlining the process of trying over and over again until you get a high roll.
>>
>>538546605
Listen, headcanon-Imoen really wanted to see Athkatla and get in on all the sidequesting she'd missed.

Dice roll skill checks are for TTRPGs. They fall flat in CRPGs because of savescumming. It needs no further explanation than this. You don't have to start talking about the plausibility of an experienced thief failing to pick a given lock. It's just part of the TTRPG design which doesn't translate well in a computer game. Players won't savescum for every miss in combat, but they will when they feel they've lost out on some 'content' due to bad luck.

The first step toward solving this problem is simply not to show options which the party can't take, like greyed out dialogue choices or failed checks. I think WotR or Tyranny included this as a menu setting for dialogue if I recall correctly. For example, in BG3 you get four loud dice roll sound effects and four 'check failed' popups every time you miss a hidden item in the world. In RT, on the other hand, if you fail to spot hidden loot there is nothing to suggest that anything happened at all.

>But when you're just calmly staring at a locked chest
Another point to consider is that in tabletop this is fine and good because there's an active GM.
You're the best lock-picker in the world and roll a 1 in a quiet setting.
>CRPG: "lol too bad for you
>GM: "Right as you're about to get it, a bug out of nowhere literally flies right in your eye and you curse it and swat but end up breaking your lockpick"
Hell, the GM could go on if they wanted, allowing a perception check that this rare beetle is exactly what you need to grind up and make a specific poison.

There's no active response in CRPG though. Ignoring patches/DLC, from the moment of sale to the player, every single path and consequence and response is baked in solid with no possible deviation, because it's a computer program taking up a finite amount of space.

That's not to say that I'm apologizing for the stupidity of CRPGs in those kind of situations, they really do need to be a lot better, but it's just something to keep in mind since most CRPGs are just fairly direct ports of (or heavily inspired by) tabletop systems that have as an essential component, the Game Master.
