What are some good places other than Twitter and 4chan to share progress on your game?
>>538737591What I meant is that if your game just has a flat hit chance % there's no reason to have the player manually roll a die for that, make it automatic. Another strength of dice is that it's a very intuitive way for players to understand rerolls or picking a result, I don't know what your game is about but maybe consider a blood bowl like system where you roll more than one die and pick a result.

>>538744520Nothing will work out for everyone, obviously. But, if you are an indie dev with a massively successful game, it would probably be easier to just make youtube slop and "game design" courses on how to make games, and make money off that.
I think Youtube is worse than gamedev. As a gamedev you can make a new game. As a Youtuber once you fall off the algorithm, you're done basically forever no matter what you do.
>>538739783I don't care about what ""people"" think. I do it for my own enjoyment.
>>538745428On youtube you can use AI voice acting and no one will bat an eye. In gamedev you can't, even for free games. So youtube wins.
>>538740357Swinging was nice, parry was a bigger questionmark.
>>538745428Wrong. Successful YouTubers have been able to prove that they can start a fresh channel completely detached from their previous persona/channel and get a ton of subscribers right away though pure skill alone. YouTube is also a meritocracy just like gamedev.

>>538744792No, I got sick in HL2 after like 30mins. Not exactly sick, but it felt like my eyes were going to pop out of my skull
Hey vg, I was wondering something. I am pretty recluse (do not collab with others, but I do online research), I am easily a developer first, I hire an artist that I only talk art with, they make the art. I code. That's it.While working on this game for two years, I am realizing that my game scalability wise is *very easy* to scale. As in, making content that feels unique is really easy as I made almost everything Data driven. The AI is also getting a hell of a lot smarter. I have never worked in a professional studio or with indie teams, my coding experience comes from making very data driven code for general companies.I am getting a weird feeling here that making scalable, well built game mechanics, should be more common?I am not patting myself on the back or bragging here, I am not some wiz. Some theories:-A lot of those driven to make games are more art-centric, and learned coding to make the game, therefore, 'complicated' code hardly exists-I am not hunted by Investors to my game and entirely self fund, therefore I do not need to cut corners and am on my own time-Coding entirely alone means I am only speaking my languageAm I missing something? I would like to know other's input on this
>>538745067You cant seriously expect to cover EVERY game design problem with porn
>>538746142That's the YouTube algorithm testing out if new smaller channels are able to garner any attention, the same way that Steam gives every game a tiny bit of baseline visibility to test its viability. >>538746148
>https://store.steampowered.com/app/1920430/FUMES/what caused this success? game seems pretty basic
>>538746384Nostalgia for Twisted Metal + Mad Max fans
>>538746250Can you be more specific? Give an example? What kind of game are you making? An RPG might be easier to scale because you can write side quests as modules, as long as you have the engine. A simple platformer can be easy to scale because each level is its own self contained thing. A metroidvania is not as easy to scale because each level has to build off of the last one (i.e, new abilities unlock new areas in the game, puzzle solving needs to take advantage of new mechanics, you can't just work on content in isolation)
Kylindros is pretty cool. A game where your guy can be an unabashed ass hole. I got up to the room with 2 goblins and then got stuck. Does the dev post here often?
>>538746363except the difference is youtube can do it multiple times over for a channel. it might be in different scales but, if you do actually want your content to be watched (some people on YT don't and use it as a personal/corporate archive) then it will recommend your videos over and over. steam won't after the first release.
>>538746384
>>538746843forgot pic
>>538746963Yes it does. Steam gives every game, no matter how awful, around 40 baseline organic impressions per day.
>>538747304Oh brother its THIS guy again.
I like dark descent
>>538746384Simple yet fun gameplay loop, good enough graphics, a sprinkle of neat physics, exciting upgrade system.Just by watching the steam gameplay video I instantly can recognize it's a solid game.I should become a publisher.
>>538747304I got 5k impressions per day from my itch demo.
>>538747304>>538747341can confirm that's what steam's own stats suggest, although:- they may be lying- for my flop it's about 30 a year after release
>>538746621Sure, in my case an Action Roguelite (think similar to other titles like Hades, with the intent on having far more weapons and enemies).I already built the seed generation, a full save system that is easy while developing to add and remove serialized content from said save. The in game shop (not real currency, just currency in game) is coded as well and can be populated with whatever pretty easily.Weapons and attacks have a very solid pipeline, melee has a combo system that even the AI is capable of using (the AI can stop combos if the target moves away). Damage execution is kinda "cute" in the current state in that it does quite a bit, but that is only because I modeled it after another in depth system I have studied in a released game. It won't stay that way, but I like that I figured it out I guess?Enemies can also fight each other and path each other. Easy to add/remove abilities to any enemies. They also have sub types. All of this is developer side and doesn't reflect what will be in the shipped game. With that said, any of this can be removed and added back without much time needed and no impact to other systems. This includes that while developing this, I was also developing the multiplayer side of it for fun, even though I had no original intent to include multiplayer in any capacity (I use it as a break from making base game code). It's pretty sandboxy at the moment, and I am not saying it is ready for any sort of alpha or anything, just want to make sure that is clear. I have experience in my original job of shipping out software after testing in test and dev regions, so those sorts of pipelines already are clear to me as well.
>55 reviews in a year>$5
>>538746384Just tried the demo.If you can't tell why this game is popular, stop hoping you will ever make anything that makes enough money to make a living off of.This game is super good and is also exactly the scope an indie dev should aim for.
>>538747548Unless Steam goes full transparent with this data, we'll never know if it's actually 40 real players or just some kind of crawler bots not logged by Valve (that all those game tracking websites could run).Of course I don't really care about whatever that brownie says but unless you make like literal stickmen with no animation tier trash, getting 40 REAL views a day should make the market like it was in 2015-2018 when literally ANYTHING was successful (to a degree), which it isn't.
>>538746250>>538747585Scalability is nice and all, but the point of scalability is to save you time in the long run. You've already wasted 2 years, and you haven't even made it to a playable alpha? Meanwhile, a while back, I hacked together a similar action-roguelike (pick-3 survivors-like) for a game jam in just 3 days. Sure, it wasn't clean, as all of the data for stuff like upgrades was hard coded dictionaries, but in the end, it plays all the same.
>>538747548Also your post confirms what I said here as well >>538746963Unlike Youtube which can give you a random number of views at any moment, Steam will gradually decrease the visibility your game has until literally nobody sees it ever and it can ONLY spread through word of mouth. YouTube, on the other hand, can still recommend your other videos or the same video again randomly (unless it's shadowbanned which you know how to avoid, unlike on Steam). It doesn't seem to do that AS much as it did a year ago but it's still better than Steam's algorithm by a long mile.
>>538748075Something indie devs need to realize is that screenshake is impactful because most of the time the screen isn't shaking. If everything makes the screenshake then it loses its impact and it's actually kinds of annoying.

>>538748462>2015-2018So the shovelware era? Back then, those games the shittiest games were getting thousands of impressions per day, which made the Steam storefront look like massive a pile shit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR2bpxd-EJw>While the exact figure is private, a post on the Steamworks developer page in June 2024 claimed Steam generates 1 trillion impressions per day across all its users. That's one trillion with a T, or 1,000,000,000,000+ impressions. I know your tiny nigger brain is unable to comprehend such large numbers, but the 40 free impressions times the roughly 400k shovelware games on Steam is only 16 million impressions, or 0.0016% of total impressions on Steam daily.

The problem of too many developers and not enough players is killing the industry not only in terms of there not being enough money to go around, but in a more subtle way of making games worse. In order for developers to make good games, they need to actually see how players interact with their games. That's how developers properly learn game design. But with too many developers and not enough players, why would any player spoiled for choice ever agree to playtest an unfinished game when they can have fun playing a finished game instead? So developers can't find play testers, and the game turns out worse as a result.
>>538757947there's more players than ever. So much that you can make it making niche games.
>>538738434>make a good game>make a good capsule and title>make a html5 build. your engine CAN do that in a few clicks rightez and done
>>538758208There's even more developers though. What's important isn't the raw numbers of players so much as the ratio of players to developers/games, which is getting worse to worse. There are just too many games.

>>538760539Yeah, but if you have different framerates on the table and you have something firing every tick, how do you stop variance if you're using event tick? That's the point. Especially for multiplayer stuff. If you have two people where their movement or capabilities are tied to framerate, that's the issue.
>>538760624>underserved audiencesA meme. If an "audience" is underserved, that means it doesn't exist. It's why immersive syms don't sell outside of a few astroturfed discord troon games.

>>538762113I dunno what you're doing but typically multiplayer logic is throttled to a lower tick rate than game logic anyway. You can change this of course but for most games that aren't competitive shooters it's adequate.

godette's preteen pussy
>>538788053no and it's primarily because I dislike gdscript .the very concept of a python-like scripting language for game development is a dumb idea. I was so glad when Unity abandoned unityscript or whatever that shit was called. godot chose the wrong path, they went the other way, keeping their gimmick language and neglecting C#. thus they sealed their fate in my eyes.the other problem is the tendency to half-ass 3D features and then abandon them to half-ass an alternative and then abandon that, too. it's like another cargo cult Unity thing, where Unity can afford to half-ass and abandon new features because they already have a robust way of doing most things and devs can fall back to the older way. so Unity merely stagnates due to this bad habit. they've just stopped making real progress but the engine is still worth using because it was already worth using in the late 2010s. meanwhile godot doesn't have those fallback solutions. there's no fallback for "I need proper lighting in my 3D game" in godot and at this pace there never will be because Juan just fucks around with some paradigm (I'm sure he's eyeing radiance cascades next if he hasn't already started on that) but nothing ever finishes so the engine goes another year with NO lighting solution, and another, and another.
I present to you an idea. Use it wisely.A roguelike called "The Choosing Between Three Things Problem", themed after the Monty Hall problem.
>>538788546What do you mean godot doesn't have a lighting solution?
>>538788150>tfw I've finally reached the age where it seems comical and borderline unbelievable that I could still be a virginI remember going on 4chan when I was 19 and seeing posts like this and thinking to myself "that's never going to be, I'll surely find a girlfriend and have sex before I'm that old".But then I never did anything. I never tried asking any women out. I never went out and put myself in scenarios where I could meet women. I just sat in my bedroom playing video games and lifting weights, expecting the perfect woman to magically appear and fall so helplessly in love with me that starting a relationship would take virtually no effort on my part. This is where 27 years of complacency gets you. Alone, clueless, and with no idea how to get out of the position you've put yourself in. I'm so socially stunted when it comes to talking to women that I wonder if it's even possible to find love at this point. Even if I manage to find a woman who wants to go on a date with me through a dating app, the moment we meet and she sees me struggle to look her in the eye and stammer as I attempt to make conversation she's going to want to leave immediately.

>>538789513you're not arguing in good faith. again. there's no point trying to reason with The Cult.
I want to make a game with a bocchiposterThey seem cute and fun
At first I was going for a really dark and somber plot for my game but the gameplay for it would also be a lighthearted card puzzle game. For these types of games people don't want to be invested in a story, they just want to play the puzzle, min-max and get out, skipping all the story if possible. Now I'm stuck thinking which path I should follow, if I make a story-driven game I will need whole different kind of gameplay; if I make a more lighthearted card puzzler game then I need to redo all the menus, art, music etc.
>>538789803You're not either. You're living in some imaginary world where there exists some perfect catch-all solution with zero trade-offs, but that's not reality. You can't point to a single game made in another engine that you want to replicate, but can't in Godot.

Any games you can think of with an "Ultima-like" inventory?Like, opening multiple bags to rifle through your shit (or your followers)? Some Ultima games are have a grid-based inventory, but I'm talking more on the many bags thing...I'm trying to imagine how I can make this work with a controller lmao- feels like everyone just does lists for a reason.
>>538813760World of Warcraft
Would it be marketing suicide if I include sex magic in my fantasy game? The idea is that if your character participates in ritual sex that some cults of some gods from some cultures have, and it can give you bonuses, and by adding... Sex juices to your alchemy you can have potions with the same bonuses. Maybe have it connected to the Orgone energy concept.Just thinking that maybe average people will go "ewww wtf haha this is a silly billy game I can't play this on twitch" and the ever swelling ranks of the christo-fascists will try to murder me for being a woke degen.
>>538813760Maybe scale it down to just two bags, your inventory and the other person's inventory and design a window specifically for two people's inventory. When the bag is open, you can use the dpad to move between items.
anyone know unreal? I need guidance and mentorship
>>538813664if you aren't cris/for anyone else in that position, an accent doesn't matter at all. it doesn't matter if you have a deformed face and do game dev. the only people that will be following your devving youtube channel are people that are actually into watching your videos and listening to you. no fucker on the planet takes even a second of their time to watch a devlog if they don't give a flying fucking shit about devving
>>538813930Na. "Suggestive Themes" and "Sexual Themes" don't raise your rating much if it's only description and not graphic. If it's graphic, then you're making an adult-only game. Also, Start with Pong, nodev.

>>538814364well yea anon... this is 2025, not 1942 where all you had to do was make a channel and you'd get a trillion subscribers. it's going to take time, are you not at all aware of branno's youtube channel? go look at his from the general, he just posts videos over and over and his following is only increasing. if you're looking for a fast track to a 10m subscriber devving youtube channel, it would be a better use of time to try and figure out how to make a time machine for yourself
>>538814483how was youtube uploading during 1942?
>>538814479it's my first time. can you teach me how to make a game where all the things in the game stay on a single 2d plane but still have physics so they can like bounce around and stuff? Like... you know those particle simulations they show you in school with a box and lots of little circles bouncing around inside it? how would you make a top down game like that with a bunch of little spherical hitboxes bouncing around off eachother like molecules of gas?

>>538814419if done properly it's a wonderful idea, it just can't be a living room couch outdated technology and equipment type of hole in the wall podcast type of thing
>>538814652Making Pong is actually quite difficult, because there aren't any comprehensive tutorials for it, so it does require for you to use some brain power to figure some things out for yourself. That's part of the learning process. If you want to learn Unreal, follow Epic's beginner tutorials: https://dev.epicgames.com/community/unreal-engine/getting-started

Any ideas on how to make a basketball hoop net (in unity) that moves dynamically? With hinges or springs or whatever? I want each vertical string to be connected horizontally. Is it possible to make the horizontal connections stretch as the vertical pieces move? So far I've only found chain or rope tutorials, the hingejoint components don't have multiple connections. Maybe I haven't checked all the joint components yet. I have a feeling that it won't be worth the effort and would be easier to just make a scale animation of the whole net.
>>538816860A single mesh with 8 or so jiggle bones should be enough.
what do you guys think of this character? i'm testing out a beat-em-up / platformer hybrid idea
>>538816860>>538816934Forgot to say it's a 2d game. But even if it's a 2d game the hoop is going to need a z movement. So it's going to have to be a 3d object.I was trying to make each string piece with separate sprite like in the image. I'm not too familiar with 3d unfortunately.

In my game, the player has flashbang grenades at his disposal. The enemies can't use them not because of some design choice but because I didn't bother to implement that to them. Now, while I'm waiting for the soundtrack guy to finish up, I've been thinking of giving the ability to throw flashbangs to the enemies. But that can be quite annoying, even if made rare.. what do /agdg/? Should I leave it as is or add the flashbang?
>>538824086>But that can be quite annoying, even if made rare..That annoyingness will only be experienced once. When you make another game in the future, you can just recycle your script. Think of the long run anon. Better be annoyed now, than later

>>538824217Nigga, I mean for the player.
>>538823237I thought it was cool
>>538824385Oh lmao. Then sure put it. If the difficulty is still fair (as if, the numbers), then the player will be even more thrilled when they beat an annoying npc. I suggest you separate 2 types of enemy, one that can, and one that cannot flashbang. This way, the player can make their own way to deal with the annoyingness

Everything about the steam cuts and taxes is all so confusingIf you sell 10,000 copies of a $10 game as an American, how much money do you get? $40,000?
>>538837154you don't have to worry about that
>>538837154if the game cost you $50,000 to make then that means you make $20,000 and steam makes $30,000. Thanks for contributing to my new yacht :)
>>538837126Do that and also kill his entire family
>>538837373I know steam's cut is 30% (Still a lot) but I'm trying to figure out how that other 70% gets dealt with for taxesI'm thinking about getting an accountant and incorporating
>>538836753As long as there's maids, yes.
anyone here do photo-bashed textures? do you ever find it limiting in any way?
>>538837475if you're going to make any significant volume of money you should seriously consider itin my case, I'm not incorporated because while that may make my personal funds liable to lawsuit, overall it's better for tax because I can average my earnings in a way businesses can't and the corporate fee just makes it worse until I'm earning in the higher tax bracket anyway. The 30% steam fee comes out before other taxes. Steam simply doesn't give that 30% to you. You only get the 70%, so you are only taxed on that 70%.Income tax applies when the funds reach your personal bank/wallet/moneyholdings. If your funds end up in a business, it'll be business taxed but won't be income taxed, at least not until you decide to pay that money to yourself.
>>538837403don't do that
>>538734458>>538820154https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0Sf7tPSW6Qdudes, this game is cancer and aids. he's on nintendo switch so he's a nepo baby. try and apply for nintendo switch SDK, you can't get it unless you know somebody. plus the in game graphics have fake lowres you can literally see that the model underneath the pixels has a higher detail geometry, its like he's using a fake pixel shader or something, and then in the night vision mode it has screen tearing! probably fake as well, why the hell would you ever add screen tearing of all things to your game? This guy is a tosser I hope he gets hit by a bus.

>>538837731Photo-bashed assets are probably the least limiting approach out of them all. You don't even need any serious drawing skill or use expensive software, just paint.net is enough and having a loose sense of "what looks good". Plus it's fast.
>>538838403i mean creating something fantasy or sci-fi is probably a bit harder since there aren't photos of these things IRL
>>538837154>>538837373>>538837475businesses only pay tax on declared profit. they get to subtract all business expenses from revenue before being left with any profit to distribute.you can pay yourself a wage as an employee which becomes a business expense, makes sense if your personal income tax is less than corporate tax + your personal income tax on the dividend disbursement.and then there is your dual 5090 SLI computer that you used to make your game with, a business expense. taken out of business revenue before profit or tax is calculated. so pre-tax money.and don't forget your ford mustang company car that you use to go to media junctures and gaming events with, its anime vinyl wrap is also your corporate advertising. all business expenses. As is its fuel usage when you drop a business card off at your destination or somewhere along the way, such as at the gas station.your home costs such as roof repair renovation, getting it lifted and built-in under, water bill, power bill, internet bill, are all pro-rata business expenses for your usage ratio as a home office.and your 3d printer that is used to make plastic clay miniatures for you to photo bash into your game is a business expense as is all your time spent learning or researching on YouTube.in fact every experiment or side hobby you've ever done was a documented in a log book corporate project that was part of you developing your product and is a business expense.I'm surprised your business will ever make any profit at all, you'll probably never make a dollar in profit after all these expenses and therefore never pay a dollar in tax, I know many of the worlds richest corps certainly don't.
>>538839397Very good mindset
>>538748594Sorry for the late reply, game industry wise, yes, it's a playable alpha, I just don't want to distribute it to anyone presently while work is done. Earlier, I said it is not an alpha or anything with the hope it would be a strongarm to avoid the alpha conversation haha. I know now that was stupid of me, but it's because I have heard the same arguments about how quickly games can be put together for game jams, and I get it, but I thoroughly am scrubbing this game while building it to prevent bugs now & future bugs. I want all scenarios to be handled without it being bloat and slow.So I wouldn't say I wasted two years, the project is coming along pretty great on my end, and concept art is looking great. Honestly the one thing I would say is bad is that I cannot find a good 3D modeler for the life of me. Pay isn't the problem, I have paid fair wages in the past and been very undemanding in regards to pressure.
