i don't know if my dopamine receptors are just absolutely fucked or if clicker games are just painfully boring to play
i'm trying out some of these games to see what the appeal is and zero percent of my brain cares about them
they feel like chores, what's the appeal?
>>
>>538838569
Unironically yes. I'd rather read a text box, or even hear him do the voice acting himself with the aid of a voice changer, than have an AI voice it. It's so grating on the ears.

This would've been much more acceptable if they, instead of trying to voice act every single dialogue instance (especially because of their low budget) they just had a set of simple quips for each character that they would use.

Even some of the biggest brands do this. Granblue Fantasy, which rakes in a ridiculous volume of money from being a popular gacha, doesn't fully voice act everything. Characters have simple quips such as "sore na ..." "hwa!" "daijoubu desu" "hmmm..." which can be laid over any text that it's relevant for.

of course, they're not all clicker games, nor are they all idle games, they generally fall under the category of hypercasual incremental "toys" (i wouldn't really consider them to be real games)
almost all of them made me feel very little excitement or enjoyment at all
i can see the appeal of them providing an extremely low effort sense of progression, but that's about it
they're fun for about three minutes, until you get an understanding of what the gameplay is, and then ... ???
why would i ever choose to play any of these?
at most, the novelty of the premise of each game feels interesting, but then i unlock a few upgrades, get a glimpse into how the game will scale, and then, again, lose all interest

how the hell do these sorts of games do so well?

I can make any kind of game. There's nothing that's technically beyond my means. It will just take a long time and not have enough appeal when finished because in 2025 your game needs to be in the top 5% to have been worth developing.

>There's nothing that's technically beyond my means.
It feels good to reach this level of skill. I feel similar, and my main concern isn't with if I can make a game or not, but what sort of game I should make, based on how long it will take to finish, as I'm a little bit impatient, and how much I'd personally enjoy the final product of the game. It's hard to make my mind up with finding a balance of passion and development cost. I'm experimenting with idle games because they seem like a genre that allows for strong thematic expression and fast development speed, but the lack of mechanical gameplay makes me want to scrap my project and work on something more conventional.

>>538844735
the only reason to delay launch after the page is public is to farm wishlists/gain attention for your game before release, and make more money
if you don't care about money, you can release it as soon as possible
if you want to increase revenue, advertising the game while the page is active is a good way to gain wishlists and build "launch momentum"
steam's promotion algorithm works through revenue periods, so amount of revenue your game generates in a short period of time, normally a week, i think, directly relates to how much promotion your game receives
if you release a game and make 10 sales, your game will remain hidden, revenue is too low
if you make the store page public, farm wishlists from advertising and promotion campaigns, release your game afterwards, and get 1000 sales, the revenue your game has generated will increase the exposure it receives on steam
it all really depends on how much you want to set your game up for steam algorithm promotion after launch
keep in mind, your game can have a weak launch and still find success later on, there is no "dead" point for a game in regards to the algorithm
if you release a game, and it's stagnant for years, but then it suddenly blows up and becomes popular, the algorithms will notice the increase in revenue, and begin promoting your game
so again, it really depends on how much money you plan on making
i don't know what your game is, but three months should be a decent amount of time to build hype for an indie game with humble expectations, just be sure you're posting about it and building support

If you're just getting into clicker games you're in for a bad time because it feels like someone just released a tutorial for a game where you're in an arena while your health is ticking down, and when you die the skill tree is a node tree with marginal upgrades and everyone is copying it without adding anything useful.
If you want the good ones you have to go back a few years, here are some of the best ones the genre has to offer in my opinion, based on the fact that they're not just "number go up" but actually add interesting mechanics:
Universal Paperclips
Alkahistorian Series
Crank
A Dark Room
Candy Box 1 & 2
Wigmaker

management/business sim where instead of making cars or games or whatever you make fembots.
you need to pay attention to market trends, to take advantage of economies of scale, to incorporate latest hardware, etc.
but there's also a tower defense component (I thought xcom like tactics component but let's avoid the tactics curse) where hordes of feminists want to burn down your factory and your fembots are the only ones who can defend it so as you progress you need to balance the fembots' market appeal with their combat capabilities.
please someone start making this so I don't project hop again.
>>
>>538846427
Yeah that's the one, really ruined browsing itch for new games.
You could also scroll through https://galaxy.click for other stuff, it's a fairly decent site for games.
There's also https://plaza.dsolver.ca/games but it's currently down, worth to check every now and then to see if it's up.
As a last resort there's also the weekly game recommendation thread on r/incremental_games, the sub used to be a good place to find games but like 2 or so years ago the genre kinda flatlined.

it seems the users there noticed the same problems you have
https://www.reddit.com/r/incremental_games/comments/1ndx45w/someone_obviously_used_an_evil_genie_to_wish_for/

i think this genre is due for a revival
a high quality incremental game would be perfect right now, especially in contrast to the flood of low effort clones being released

Around 10 hours of content. The main RPG maker has dungeon generators you can edit and get plugins for messing with it, making layouts doesn't take long. Once the sprites are set up, map creation is quick and easy where you can do a massive chunk of them in an hour. Don't use the default sprites they are fucking ass.

>how is this even fun?
The fun behind most tabletop games comes from making the best of what you're given and outplaying your opponent, and most non-RPG tabletop games are relatively short so they can be enjoyed in small bursts. A game of dominion for example goes for about 10-20 minutes. But the downside is that you need a table to play on, and in most cases, someone to play with. With video games you don't need any of that.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

>>
>>538878616
You can have 3 chapters and turn it into a gimmick.
1st chapter - all arms
2nd chapter - no arm
3rd chapter - all arms but upgraded now.
It can give each chapter a distinctive feel, give you better and concise design goals, and for the players, a good sense of progression.
>>
>>538878616
>Any idea as to what the frequency of this item should be?
No and you won't know either until you play test. How often can you lose it? How fun or challenging is it not having an arm? It all depends and only testing will tell you the answers.

AI voice acting is literally the most ethical use of generative AI.
The voice actors on sites like ElevenLabs both consented and are being paid when you use their voice.

Again, do you have proof that this data is "unauthorized"? If they have paid voice actors they could've simply used them to generate new data, like how Apple did with whoever was the actress for Siri.

Wait a second, chuds.

There's four basic interactions between characters in videogames, but there's also a limited number of victory conditions in games.
Basically the victory conditions are race to the first position, reach to X position alive, survive waves of enemies, control more territory, gain more points, collect all tokens, kill a certain enemy, protect an object.

And there's a limited number of game overs, basically reach 0 HP, allied token dies, reach the end of the level and timer.

I just realized a game doesnt need 500 hours of 500 levels, It only needs a proper theme story being told using a basic hero's journey adventure, and the properly set a collection of levels thematically coherent with the plot, where there is a game over transition condition, a bridge cutscene, and a proper combat mode made of the 4 basic interactions symbolically representing the theme conflict, and some game over and victory conditions to the stage level play.

Let's say I have an achievement that goes: score 10, 20, 30, 40... points. I'm planning on checking the player score in player stats when game loads and if the player score is 35, I will mark it as player has achieved first 3 levels of this achievement. So if I later change the numbers it won't create a confusion. I won't have separate achievements as "score 10 points", "score20 points"... I will have one achievement with array of milestone values. This is correct right? I thought this was smart so I can adjust them later and also I was planning on just making local achievements, then I thought I would need to structure my achievements in the second way if I want to register to the app store, google play or steam. I haven't tried setting achievements at the store side so I don't know how things work.

I really like the vague storytelling in this game, also this has been the longest demo of all for me, I can't believe the dev left so many levels here.

I agree a bit with the streamer that some checkpoints/spawn points would've been welcome in some levels (the second level is a bit too long). The first area of the second world is more or less cinematic for instance. I've been enjoying it so far, the music is amazing.

I don't know if he's aware of it or not, but he's doing that monopolist thing where they use their economies of scale competitive advantage to drive down prices so that competitors can't enter the market.

Not that there's anything wrong with that (monopolies forcing lower prices is part of why "monopolies are good, actually") per se, it's just kind of odd what with how the fans try to pretend the game is some anti-monopoly/anti-caplitalism thing.

in most games you start with a 1-4 dagger then upgrade it to a 2-8 dickdagger then a 3-12 dickassdagger and constantly have to get better and better base items in addition to needing better enchantments on top of the superior base weapon, whereas a wizard can find a +1 fire skill wand and use it from levels 5-50 until they find a +2 fire skill wand instead of having spell damage be based on your wand's base damage

>>
>>538912689
I don't know of any games that do that do I can only guess. My guess would be that having a melee weapon is relatively boring compared to the fantasy of being able to cast spells, so in order to spice of the "boring" melee fantasy developers add more incentives for melee players to change out their weapon. Whereas people who like playing as wizards are perfectly fine using the same shit as long as they get to shoot fireballs.

If you want to make a game (or any piece of media) set in the modern world you need to have a really good reason for it. It's difficult to create compelling stories within a modern environment since many people play games/read books/watch movies as an escape from the real world. They often don't want to be presented with the same problems they might encounter in their own lives, they want something different.
An obvious exception to this is when you take en existing story set in a different time period and move it to the modern day, which helps the viewer/reader/whatever better relate to the themes of the story by viewing the characters in scenarios they're more familiar with.

I meant sell the idea to friends&family. Because it means there is a chance it might not make profit.

>How much money do you need?
My credit card debt is getting bigger because of the inflation. I am able to survive but it's putting a lot of stress on me.

>How far along is your game?
It's pretty playable so far. At least on my phone. I haven't uploaded to a store yet and I still need to do the ads/in app purchasing stuff. I'm working solo so I need to edit/modify the assets I downloaded and even create some assets myself. That would be the most challenging part I assume for me.

>chamber of commerce
etc would be too big for my game.

I had good relations and one of my friends seemed interested in investing my game but at the time I was going through things and I just couldn't even concentrate on my work. I was very skeptical of myself. Now looking back, I realize I could have finished my game long time ago but my mind was just not in peace. These days I'm feeling more calm and collected but the damage has been done.

It's a single player 2d basketball shooting game by the way. So it's nothing exciting for potential investors I think. If it makes money it makes but it would be a bit unexpected. Maybe I'm judging it wrong I don't know.

>>538927104
that is true, but with the modern era of social media, it should be possible to replicate a fraction of this advertising by just spamming your game on social media and optimizing your posts for algorithm engagement

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2870710/Pih/
this game has over 300 reviews because it was spammed on instagram and tiktok
if the dev didn't spam videos about it, it would absolutely be stagnant at maybe 30 reviews if he was lucky

similarly, mobile games are absolute dogshit, but because big companies spend millions on advertisements, through raw exposure, they end up getting millions of downloads

i think it's viable to brute force your game to success through raw exposure, cheaply too, with algorithmmaxxing

It's not the spamming that does the trick. You can't just spam any random game and expect it to go viral. You have to specifically design and engineer the game to be something that has viral content potential, like Pih. For more on viral game design, maybe listen to guys like Gavin Eisenbeisz.

it feels wrong when your project consists of only control nodes, even though it makes sense it should be that way for text/point-and-click-based games.

Important question for you guys.
For an item shop game like Recettear, how important is the dungeon crawling mechanic as a way to acquire items. I'm not gonna make a full on dungeon crawling game so I'm left with two choices. Either I make it like in that My life as a king ff game where it just says the party defeated x,y,z monsters and brought back a,b,c items or I have an old rpg style combat with the heroes and monsters on opposite sides of the screen and they just play animations on their own until one side dies. In that case the monsters would drop items and it would be up to you to either continue and risk losing it all for more items or return with what you got. You would not do much directly though it would be autobattler-like. Is watching the fights and choosing whether to keep going or not that much more fun than just getting a report saying to what extent the party succeeded?
>>
the age of the inner circle

has come to an end
>>
>>538938097
Very. The Recettear shop gameplay is braindead garbage once you know how it works. The dungeon crawling is the fun reward you get for performing well while dealing with the shop grind.
>>
my project has hit the point where it has 100+ code files and i can no longer remember wtf anything is or how it fits together and so progress has stalled to almost nothing
>>
/v/ always talks about shills but through which channels does one genuinely hire people to stealth market your game on social media?

>>
>>538938097
I've played Recettear twice and I have never bothered with the dungeon crawling.
It plays like shit and it's not profitable.
If you need a side-activity I think you should replace it with something else. I don't know, maybe auctions or store marketing or something.

Man I remember I used to watch this guy, good to see he's still kicking around. Also not to get political but I accidentally gave shit to a twitter post about this guy who was mocking Kirks passing while using my game dev account, but I said F it, I'll leave it up, and it got quite a lot of likes and got a few steam purchases from my dead game from years ago. Is now the time to be political as a game dev for potential buyers?
>>
>>538938639
>>538938097
I don't see how auctions would be vastly different to how the item shop plays out. The store marketing feels like a place for events. Expanding on the events beyond just price differences would liven it up compared to Recettear somewhat, but without the dungeon crawling side gimmick the game seems bare
>>
>>538939149
Isn't the whole point of the game that you essentially play as what would be an NPC in a typical fantasy game?
The dungeon crawling always felt out of place for me. Not to mention it plays like if Ys made in Pakistan.
The auction idea was just that, an idea off the top of my head. You can do whatever you want.
Maybe flesh out the rivalry thing with the HOHOHOHOHO anime girl.
>>
>>538939421
I personally have no issue with just the item shop portion since that was always the core of the game. I'm just wandering how important a side minigame would be to break the monotony of only doing the shop, whether irrelevant or needed.
>>
>>538940029
Even if dungeon crawling was good, I think it'd still be pretty low in importance.
Because you level up from running the store and getting combos along the way, and that in turn unlocks more things like new items, orders, vending machines, and decorations.
The game is also arguably too short to be repetitive.
I guess it depends on what changes you are planning to make to the core selling gameplay.
Also, playtesting. If people don't tell you it's repetitive then perhaps you don't need to worry about it.

Pacing out your game into strategy -> execution -> more strategy is just good game design
If you ditch the dungeoneering execution loop, you should probably replace it with something else
Something cheaper to develop obviously. You could just minigamify dungeoneering somehow to remain on theme, but not require all the mechanics. Like picrel for example.

It's not personal, it's about what they represent. It's the celebration of taking extremely stupid risks for low pay outs and thinking it's a good life decision. These are people who release a mediocre game or worse off haven't released a game at all and then quit their jobs thinking they are going to make it big. It's not about providing a game for others to enjoy, it's about their own 'personal journey'. If they are a loser working a deadend job then fine, you have nothing else to look forward to so YOLO. If you have a mortgage, wife and kids then I don't want to world to reward such reckless selfish behavior.
