Certain environments play to these strengths, like the Braytech facilities or Neomuna, but every time they try to port an environment from D1 it looks worse because the game’s art style is just not tuned to those designs anymore. Then you throw in the exodus of talent and the reduced budget, timelines, QA, etc and you just get something that looks shoddier, less polished, and less impressive. The D2 Cosmodrome is especially bad because they basically gave up on delivering it and just made an MVP, whereas in D1 it was the keystone destination that they probably put the most into during development.
