On the contrary the Stories sub series has always been about the narrative. So much so in fact that it almost felt like gameplay was more of an afterthought with most mechanics and concepts just straight lifted from old monhun games. It's just it was originally envisioned as a competitor to pokemon and thus marketed towards kids so the stories were very much in line with that. Hopefully they've realized that's not going to work because the monhun audience is primarily older. I have high hopes for stories 3 but if it does really well you have to wonder what the point of mainline will still be going forward. They'll probably delve deeper into the multiplayer MMO-like niche for mainline

I actually booted up dos recently to check for something and noticed they mention festivals in that game. It was a concept in mainline as early as gen 2 while portable has never had festivals. Mainline has always been about the online multiplayer element. How is it unreasonable for them to expand on that for mainline?

Let's look at portable. In freedom you couldn't take treasure quests without a partner but fast forward to FU and you can and what's more palicoes are introduced as an alternative to playing with others. Then later on you get stuff like followers introduced in sunbreak. What's the trend here? It's away from multiplayer and towards singleplayer. Now let's look at mainline. Before you couldn't even access the second part of the game without going online and that content was hard balanced around playing with others with frankly ridiculous health pools. Fast forward to modern mainline where scaling has been introduced but you also have regular festivals and multiple social events. They want you to be social in mainline which is why the hunters themselves aren't as powerful as in portable because the point is to fight things in a group instead of relying on your own power.
