>>539883173For me it used to be sweets which I usually don't eat (because macro counting gymtard), but I started eating them right before getting to work on my game. And it worked in that it got me to start working earlier in the day.The problem is I gradually ate more and more quantity-wise and then at other times in the day to get myself to start working again for example. So I started getting fat and I had to stop.Contrary to my expectations, I didn't create a strong association between pleasurable sensations of eating sweets and working on my game.So now my gamedev ritual is looking at my sales and bank accounts.

>>539890940i believe you are correct about this, but to add, i also believe that in order for these games to succeed, it's critical to understand the central appeal of the game, and to be able to communicate this appeal effectively in your promotional contentfor example, if your game is a hyperstimulating dopamine "toy", then you'll want your promotional content to highlight these elements, and to promote these elements to a compatible audience, probably zoomers who watch streamers and enjoy brainless content that they can play while watching a youtube video on their second monitorif the appeal of your game is high quality art, then your promotional content would need to highlight the best artistic elements of the game, and be promoted to people who are known to enjoy these sorts of gamesif the appeal of your game is a fantasy narrative, like running a supermarket, climbing a mountain with your friends, or saving a village from an evil dragon, then the promo content will need to highlight this fantasy scenario and, again, promote it to audiences that are likely interested in the theme of your gameof course, i do fully agree with you, but i'm just adding this reply to add context into how to increase the odds of success for these sorts of gamesit's hard to identify an element of appeal with a viable audience who you are capable of reaching, which is what contributes to these sorts of games failingwhatever community or group of people you're capable of interacting with is probably the best community to design your game for

>>539892568you are absolutely correct on this, i agree with younote that i already have three games on Steam of deliberately varied natures to help me gain insight into what people respond strongest tomy underdeveloped theory is that people subconsciously insert themselves into the game they're playing, and whatever emotions they desire to feel in real life, based on their fantasies, which are rooted in shortcomings in their personal lives, are the emotions they hope to experience while they project themselves into the world/scenario of the game they're playingif somebody is bored, a scary experience will help them feel the excitement they desire - imagine a horror game like Outlast putting somebody on edge, the excitement reinvigorates themif somebody is stressed out and/or fatigued, a relaxing experience will help them feel the peace they desire - imagine an atmospheric low effort game like Death Stranding, perfect for putting in absolutely zero effort while enjoying nice art and a low effort sense of achievementif somebody is insecure, a validating experience will provide the assurance they desire - imagine a puzzle game like baba is you or manifold garden, helping them feel intelligent after solving a problem, or a competitive game like league of legends or counter strike, making them feel competent after they outplay an opponentappeal seems to be rooted in fulfilling the emotional desires of the player, through the proxy of the player forgetting about reality and inserting a projection of themselves into the simulated experiencebut of course, i need to continue developing more games to further verify my theoriesmore work undeniably needs to be done
The secret to making a good game is building a fast iteration pipeline. You should be able to change any text in your game just as easy as editing a book. Being able to change any assets on the fly. Being able to add little details everywhere without breaking anything.
And another line done.
>>539892563>"shooting game but worse" "different experience"yes, its a foodtruck management game, you need to get the meat from somewhereits immersive and fun
>>539893437Even if this theory was true, what would it prove? There is an audience for every type of game you named. You basically said "people play game because of some preference", just with many words.
>>539887638azuredev traces and the results really speak for themselves
>>539893782redundancy reduces risk of failure if success is criticali believe it's valuable to understand as much as possible about whatever you invest your time intono half-assing, do the best you canthis includes excessively analyzing as many details as possible about the game design process to understand to the best of your ability what specifically generates appealthis will allow you to formulate game design theories that are in alignment with the markets you are most capable of accessing in your current positionexample:https://store.steampowered.com/app/3272300/Yasuke_Simulator/analyze thiswhat generated the appeal for this game?
i give up i cant make my game i cant do anything
>>539893465To add to this. The reason is because you will at some point get exhausted by your own process and even if you have good ideas they will be subconsciously suppressed because you will think "man if I want to add this thing it will take hours". If you have an idea and can add it in minutes you will not only add all your good ideas, your mind will feel liberated and come up with many more good ideas to add.

>>539894408>You came up with a theory that is basically "people like thing people buy"i would disagree with this, my theory can be simplified as people buying things they likebut to fully understand why they like what they like, and to be able to predict if people will like what you create, is from understanding that the "like" stems from unfulfilled desires in day-to-day life that video games can satisfy through simulationif you notice a common complaint from a group of people you are capable of communicating with, then you can design a game that exists as a simulation of a solution to this complaint, serve the game to them, and they are likely to receive it positivelyit's not as simple as "yeah they buy it because they like it lol", it's deeper, it's understanding what exactly generates the desirean example would be stressed out wagies enjoying stardew valley, a relaxing life simulator for people who desire a simple life in a small town as a farmer, but can not feasibly pursue such a realityor, the warhammer universe, which is not necessarily a game, but a series, that appeals to the desire for conflict that military-aged men would have in a peaceful, stable, civilized societyi apologize for being verbose, but i want it to be very clearsuccessful game design is rooted in appeasing desires that individuals have in their daily lives that they can not feasibly satisfythe video game serves as a placation method for the emergence of these desiresfor exampleare you violent? do you want to beat people up? do you want to dominate them? go play a rushdown character in tekken and these desires will be satisfieddoes this clear up my point? the origin of "people liking things" stems from unsatisfied real-world desires that video games can satisfy

>>539895237That's exactly my point though. Nothing about your theory is about learning the complex variables of what appeals to people. It's literally just about saying people have a base appeal. It tries to explain why genres exist in the first place, not why 1 game out of 100 in the same genre is successful. Hence it's just over complicating simplicity.

Used to programming applets in Visual Studio, but want to move ahead to making more serious game dev projects. What would be a good engine for me, as someone who wants to mostly keep things reliant on just good old-fashioned C++?Tried Godot, not a big fan of how the node system feels compared to just typing in a .js file.
>>539895687I think you are doing well and your work has the potential to resonate with a lot of people. Also, if I remember correctly you didn't use inheritance at all for Cosmic Call.
I don't even understand why /agdg/ is shitting on me for finishing my flopped EA game. I don't like the idea of an unfinished project hanging over me like guillotine, and I'm not even planning to do any game dev at all afterwards. So I decided to finish my game so I can move on from it completely. I don't get why this makes /agdg/ so rageous.

Gamedevs, why no Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force-likes? Too hard to code? Too complicated to come up with your own OC Donut Steel card game? Too much art needed? Something else? I'd kill for a game like this. It's not even necessarily the card game that appeals to me (I actually find Yugioh boring unfortunately) but like just being a really chill game, without the "cozy" marketing pretense, you play at your own terms, if that makes sense. If you think of it like an RPG, for example, there's no forced battles while roaming unlike every single RPG, rather you only duel when you want to outside story events. Likewise, for the story, you don't even have to engage with it if you don't feel like it. There's zero pressure to really do anything, you only engage because you feel like it. But at the same time it's not "aimless" because you do have in-game goals to strive towards.
>>539899970because most of us weren't consolefags
>>539899970Designing a whole ass card game is a bottleneck, yes.
>>539898453Unreal, huh? Isn't that pretty heavy to handle all the graphical overhead? I'm probably not going to be making a lot of use out of the graphical utilities - not because my game's gonna be an abstract art piece or some shit, but just because it's going to be on the lower end.I'll give it a shot. Thanks anon
>>539899970I was thinking about something like this but not like tag force since those games are fundamentally just bad. Just something that encapsulates the joy of a trading card game. Interacting with people, playing cards, trading them. Ironically the best game that encapsulates that feeling is Gwent in Witcher 3.
>>539899970Sounds like you want a life sim with an RPG tacked on. There's definitely a market for that, go make it. Yu Gi Oh lends itself well to this since that's kind of the vibe of the show. They're just kids engaged in a competitive game that always goes off the deep end becoming dark and intense

>>539890084i asked chat gpt about this it explained that in certain survival situations such as in freezing cold temperatures, "giving up" and conserving valuable energy might be the best survival option. It also might be useful to "play dead" in life-or-death predator attacks. This would all be instinctual for the mouse so it doesn't know how terrible of a strategy that is for treading water. So mystery solved, we're all still just genes trying to reproduce!
>>539900221then don't use an engine. use some framework like SDL

>>539973550>well then fucking make a difficult autobattla with strategizingyeah i wanted to but i don't think i should go read megaloot reviews the dev removed a infinite scaling mechanic that made the game broken and people hated it being removedfrom what i'm researching most people play autobattlers just like they play incrementalsasync pvp autobattlers do have that niche hardcore turboautist minmaxxer audience but even then they're just a tiny fraction of the playerbase

>>539973491So essentially since the default program handles all game logic a shader can only affect the graphics making them feel more like gimmicks than real programs.

>>539974079you can make an async pvp autobattler, where turboautist will dominate, but a common player will have fun creating meme buildsHave Northernlion play itrig the matchmaking so that your first 5 games on a new account are slightly easier and/or have the fun stuff more likely to appearhe'll win, but inevitably make obvious mistakes, triggering the "ad guy" effect, the viewers rush to buy your game

if your soul is healthy enough to enjoy something as absurd and meaningless as megabonk then you'd probably experience 100x more joy if you simply went outside and lived a real lifethis is like putting VR goggles on a puppy when they're supposed to be frolicking about in a grassy field on a sunny day
>>539974876you're sorry because you aren't xDhttps://x.com/NoContextHumans/status/1949939267054047701
>>539974257There's a whole realm of gameplay locked behind compute shaders. For example, you can simulate millions of units in real time. Also, I don't know how you think computers work, but there are millions of pixels on your screen that need to be redrawn at least 60 times per second. That is only possible with GPUs and parallel computing. You need to go through a shader to draw anything onto a screen. Just because you didn't write it yourself doesn't mean someone didn't write it for you. That's why so many games of the same engine look similar. They're using the default built in materials. (In case you didn't know, all materials are also shaders.)

marketing is just being an cluster b personality narcissist, thats itif there's a shred of decency in your soul your incapable of marketing
>>539975216>For example, you can simulate millions of units in real time. It's still only graphics. The actual game logic is going to be some extremely simplified shit. I guess it would be more accurate to say that shaders are a treasure trove of illusions with which you can work a lot of magic tricks that are ultimately trickery but feel real if you are a skilled magician.
>>539975291"twitter link" anon whimpered with his last breath, unable to concoct anything else as a strong argument, let alone an insult, having nothing else to glean, in the last fit of pathetic desperation, having already realized and be crushed by the inferiority of being a gay nigger westoid15 minutes later him and his family was raped by a pack of wild migrants, viciouslyAnd then the dragons arrived

>>539975973>The actual substance of a game is immediately obvious for anyone who has a little experience. That is why you get a billion different video essays about how gaming isn't fun anymore from a bunch of manchildren who have long outgrown this form of children's entertainment and yet refuse to let go and move on.
>>539975702I understand the sentiment but that's a bit cope. Yeah you've got Phil Fishes and YIIKs out there but like >>539975665 said most of it is just doing good work and smart strategizing. Once that is out of the way throwing a few videos around is nbd
>>539976118Shadertoy is GLSL
>>539976109From a game developer perspective Dragon Quest Builders 2 is quite interesting because it's a Minecraft clone that has really decent NPC mechanics, something that Minecraft and all clones lack. But the game design aspect is complete garbage because they killed the entire sandbox aspect and made the entire game basically one single long tutorial. So while the individual mechanics have many great aspects and ideas and all the ingredients for a great game are there, the game is ultimately ruined by game design. Really fascinating to play.
>>539976118>writing a shader in pythonI would like to see how that would work
Okay I will learn shaders Sorry for talking smack
>>539976598it's all good man, have fun, i hope you make some cool shit
>>539976261Not really. The fun just shifts from watching a magic show to the fascination of a more mechanical craft. I exactly remember when the illusion of video games slowly faded for me and I became a little depressed over it but pretty soon I rediscovered video games in a different light that ultimately felt even more enjoyable because it was something real that would last and I could expand on for the rest of my life.

Dear Anon. The only reason you think modern games are bad is because you outgrew them. Please pay no attention to modern design philosophies that aim to fleece you for everything you are worth by deliberately making the core gameplay bad so you will pay money to make it tolerable. Please pay no attention to the lazy "woke" stories that are somehow both predictable (you know what these "people" are like) and nonsensical/divorced from cause and effect at the same time.Everything is the same as it was and it always will be, nothing changes, there are no such thing as art movements, influential works or corporate meddling. You are just an incel/manchild/nazi that should grow up.Sincerely, people who thrive in this environment, and people who think every game is Packman.
