I've been playing for a few months now, I tried doing that VR thing with lvl 50 characters and got destroyed.
So I leveled them to 81 81 77 got their "best" (according to guides) UR weapons and leveled them three times for the magatama slots, also invested in magatamas, leveled my supporters and got them aligned to get the best out of my skills.
Yet I tried again and I still can't do it, my damage is still not there and the boss goes into 2nd phase and her hits do about 30% of my life bar.
I noticed when watching videos, other people's characters do like 200k per hit on their skills while I do 8k-10k.
Where is so much damage coming from? What am I missing to get so much damage out? Is it entirely that thingy where you need to have sets of all weapons and all supporters? Is it the awakening menu?

It sounds like you're on the right track. However, there are still some places you can squeeze out damage. The Armory is one area. It's a place where you store spare weapons for a damage bonus - an optimal armory can net you a total of 98% bonus damage in fact. Because you are new, you won't be able to fill your armory just yet, but it is a thing you can plan for longterm.
You can also enchant your weapons, as well as raise their skill level by combining multiple copies of the same weapon, to raise their overall damage.
Awakening skills are another area you can work on. I would recommend to keep getting characters when you can and focus on getting them up to 81. Don't worry so much about getting one character up to say, 87, yet because it's more resource intensive. The more characters you awaken overall, the more points you can invest in Awakening Skills. My advice would be to focus on the damage skills first, particularly the racial damage bonuses. Just be sure to spread your points across multiple categories, as that's more efficient than trying to max out one category at a time.
Overall, just keep in mind none of this happens overnight. VR Mode destroys a lot of newer players at first, and do keep in mind some bosses are harder than others. But you will be able to do it eventually.

Yeah still is the cheapest option. Recently we got craftable UR mats but those are drip fed and should be only used on limited weapons either way.

Eh, she was bound to get replaced eventually. Sora is way to f2p in the fact that she has no limited weapons and her best weapon is a reborn weapon (costs only 3 UR weapons in the exchange instead of 4). Compare that to other characters who have tons of limited weapons and can't compete with Sora, one of devs will eventually realize there is a problem for the whales. Annerose in the top is just the natural order of things.
