Sonic himself is the kind of character who always looks on the bright side and keeps moving forward no matter what, and Sonic stories should reflect that theme.Unironically limit "Character Development" to new characters. Preexisting characters already have strengths and flaws that make them interesting, so having them develop past their flaws will leave you with no new stories to tell, and giving them new ones will feel forced and ooc. This is why Sonic games love to have Sonic run into someone new to interact with so that the player can watch Sonic turn their worldview upside down just by being himself, instead of trying to deconstruct the franchise.Speaking of characters, Sonic characters are a huge part of why people love this series, so making sure they FEEL right should be a very high priority.
