>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, especially if you are straight, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes too
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes, that could be considered a roguelike, the same can't be said about its other modes though

What's going on here? There really shouldn't be very much variation, the entire time I've been going armorless, unarmed, and not using spells. Is there really this much variance in RNG, or am I actually somehow getting much worse at the game?

I tested out a DEFE just to check and made it to one rune before faulting with little difficulty but that's a really different playstyle so I don't know if it means anything.

It seems the new versions buffed up the early dungeon floors and sometimes you get completely shat on if you're mindlessly otabbing.
I've been trying to get into Depths for a week and only once I could. But it was because I've been playing like shit and disrespecting everything like in the good ol' days, and feels like I need to lose that part of my muscle memory to advance further.

Respen isn't subtractive, it's multiplicative.
50% lightning respen vs. 67% lightning res
67 * 0.5 = ~33 lightning res
if he dealt 1k damage in one instance to you, you'd take (1000 * (1 - 0.33)) damage, or 670 damage
You took 2/3 of what you'd normally take which is non-negligible
lightning res isn't bad to have just in case you get caught off guard or can't keep 100% downtime on disabling him but it should not be the primary defensive strategy
The main thing is to get 100% stun+daze resistance by either forging quartz onto rings or getting lucky with shops+drops, or doing both. His primary damage source stems from a debuff that he can apply when landing any Lightning attack. Usually I can get 100% stun+daze res on gear before Dreadfell which is when you're supposed to fight Urkis. Usually taking him on after first prodigy is wise.

Friend got me to pick up Barony and it's fun enough for friendslop.
The movement & kiting mechanics don't seem like the kind of thing that could be ported to a proper roguelike, but the leveling and item durability would make for a decent mini roguelike imo
Any games that do this?
>>
>>540959680
I think most roguelikes have some form of leveling up. tome4 has extensive class system. Too many classes for its own good maybe.
idk about item durability. DDA probably has it. DCSS has wands.
>>
>Elin talk
Now I'm reinstalling
This is gonna be a shitshow to get back in to
>>
>>540960129
To be more specific, Barony has several skills that range from 0 to 100, but rather than accruing experience points they just have a % chance to increase by 1 whenever you use the skill.
Similarly, every item (nearly all of them track durability) has a % chance to lose durability when you use it. It's simple and works great for a small scale game like this
>>
>>540953420
Personally I feel it's the guy who made two additional /rlg/ threads just to shitpost.

DCSS has a skill training system where exp you gain are allocated to skills in training, which is probably the closest.

Those last dungeons get pretty wild with the damage spikes they reach, and some of them even have motherfuckers at the very entrance waiting you to oneshot you immediately after you press a button.
You really have to prepare for everything before entering this part of the game.

Redeal chain or bust, Ice Form+Mirror Image is not bad.
Ask if you don't know how to Redeal yet.
You could do Priest instead of Sorcerer maybe, it's extra busted if you can do a form-swap chain.
Mehtar isn't great either, Agara or Eresh are probably baller pickups.

Alright, I ended up finging al of the best transformation talismans here at Elves 3.
Roxanne drops Statue Form and Bai Suzhen drops Dragon Form, both guaranteed.
Storm Form is really fucking solid, giving some insane evasion and even giving a bit of AC, but the real deal of this form is the amount of damage it shits out per second. It has cleave, which isn't that important now that I'm playing with the Wu-Tang Clan and those dudes already give you cleaving if you move around the targets, but it also gives you a blink that repositions your ass near someone you want to kill, blasts everyone on the line of said blink and recharges pretty quickly too. And you can even use Serpent's Lash after it to ensure you're killing whatever you're near in a couple of moves.

I'm only lacking the Death Form talisman before I tackle extended, but last time I cleared all Hells with Statue Form and Pan with Sphinx Form, so I don't know.
I'll try not to die to Tomb again this time around.

I've been pressing the wait button for like 5 minutes and nothing has happened.
Let me out.
LET ME OUT
>>
>>541015010
You're trying to boost too many skills at once. You gotta focus on one thing you want to do at the start, because that's the thing that will let you kill and, more importantly, to not get killed.
Permafrost Erupion is not only an Earth spell, but also Ice, and it's also a level 6 one so it's not gonna be online for a looooong time, so I'd suggest you traet those boots as a normal +1 pair of boots.
Poisonous Vapour are pretty easy to cast and they don't do much if you get their power up, so only get a level in Alchemy and Spellcasting to get it online. I don't think it's a good investment of early exp, but it's not that much and it's basically a guaranteed poison on some dangerous things like early scorpions and ogres.

Geez Louise this is fucking tense.
Admittedly, this has been MUCH easier than my Paradox Mage run; basically cruise control to cool. I know PM is insanely strong, but at my low level of game knowledge there's a world of difference between juggling dmg reduction buffs while squishy and needing to do convoluted combos to do damage vs just naturally being tanky and regenerative. It's also much more obvious what kind of tier 5 gear is good on Berserker for me. So as I did the prides I got stronger and stronger until, while threatening, they were very manageable. Basically no idea what the high peaks are going to be like though.

>>
>>541027335
Heh, I probably won't play Berserker ever again. I just played it since it was the first class I had played and I was a bit curious what it'd feel like with a proper built. Answer: It's kind of cool but I don't like how low their damage is. Being literally incapable of fighting bulwarks half the time fucking sucks.
>>
>>541029221
Bulwarks and Demonologists will counter most weapon classes, not just Berserker because that's just how effective armor is; you need armor pen or just gratuitous amount of stats to bypass their armor.
That said, Berserker is definitely a low damage class. Most melees do more than twice the damage of this class.
I hope you tried Flexible Combat prodigy, it's a massive damage boost to all melees.

>>541041134
You need to keep some of the stat screens open up in other windows for most of them, instead of having all of the info on the same window of the game, for one.
It's also all ASCII which can be hard to get used to if you've been playing modern roguelikes with graphic tiles.
Other than that, they tend to be pretty long, with a lot of ways to get you killed out of nowhere if you don't spoil yourself beforehand, but that could be true of a lot of games in the genre so that one gets a pass.

Does DDA still run like complete shit if you stockpile a bunch of items in your base? I've been thinking of giving pocket simulator another run but DDA's in-base FPS death feels even worse than late stage DF.
And have they added an auto-heat-frozen-food system yet or do they still expect you to manually unfreeze everything when you're hungry while reading/crafting in your base?
>>
>>541059214
Unkillable monster/psycho killer relentlessly pursue you during the entire game
>>
>>541059852
Only if it pops into your vision with absolutely no warning, then fucks off for a while. If you see it and it just murders you, that ruins all the tension. You see and get murdered by a lot of enemies in roguelikes. It'd also be really funny if it followed you around the dungeon and closed doors.
>>
>>541058913
Spooky sounds and music or lack of it, light as an actual big mechanic, gritty and scary graphics (pure ascii just isnt scary sorry), survival and puzzle type of gameplay over pure action where each enemy has specific weaknesses and interactions with the elements of the game.

The eventuality is always that no matter how scary you make a game people grow accustomed to doing the same content over and over so you should try to sprinkle in a bunch of rare random events and enemies that completely fuck with player's expectations and understanding of the game's rules.
Good example of this would be Quiet Farmstead in CDDA where instead of the usual location full of enemies that you can just blast trough with your gigastatted chad, you walk into a location that looks suspiciously safe and empty at first glance that then traps you into a timed puzzle with warped enviroment and ominous messages about your character's approaching demise as you try to complete it and the only way to escape with your life is to finish the puzzle in time.

TL;DR: Fear and Hunger but roguelike
>>
Horror is inherently non roguelike. The latter expects you to replay the game over and over, while horror depends heavily on the first time experience.

went into some sort of magic tower and got surrounded by skeleton mages. i didn't have any form of escape.

apparently this game has some chance to be brought back to life by void jesus, since i died about four times trying to get out of that room i foolishly entered. i wish i had a rocket launcher to just nuke that whole room instead of being forced into melee.

Ask voidbro to send you elsewhere, basically never respawn where you were. It puts all enemies back at max HP and puts you in the middle of them, which in 99.999% of cases is objectively worse than starting elsewhere (on the world map) and approaching on your own terms.

thanks anon.
is it better to take stat points or these talents for quest rewards?

on the one hand, i'm cucked by stats for stuff like mastery. but on the other hand, new talents categories seem a hard to come by
>>
>>541107783
I'm not an expert, but it depends a lot on character and build. Much of the time you'll end up with 100~ effective points of your main stat, so the bonus here is not huge (5%~), whereas a talent can be character-morphing to some degree. So I usually try to study the talents hard and see if they can be useful to me in any way, and only if none can do I pick the stats.
>>
>>541107783
It depends on your class, but when in doubt, always pick whatever stats your class uses.
If you find a Tinkerer class, that one's pretty good to unlock for anything you're playing as.
Other notabe abilities you can consider if they get offered are Curse of Death/Impotence, Premonition, Chant of Fortress/Fortitude, Foresight, Track and Vitality. Nt all of these are a must pick (unlike Tinker tree which is always worth considering and investing into if you find it), but most of them do well by just picking them up without needing to synergize with anything else you might be building.
>>
Chemistry worth picking ever for the salves? I see lots of items in the physics tree that can help my build but nothing in chemistry besides maybe salves. A lot of the resistances that you can get from chemistry gear my character eventually gets as immunities
>>
>>541109431
I think the Tinker is a one-time unlock and that guy doesn't show up after you unlock the class.
>>
>>541110913
Oh, right; you actually have to unlock that shit by doing some of the orc DLC campaign.
It's pretty fucking good and worth going through that DLC up to that point if you have it tho.
>>
>>541108105
>>541109431
is there some way in-game to tell how to unlock classes? no spoilers, please.

so far i've only unlocked summoner, but it seemed pretty weak compared to shieldbro.
i started as a human and used my category talent to add a rune slot for teleport. i'm deciding between a random 15-tile teleport and a 4-tile directed teleport.

fun story, i didn't pick up the transmog chest in the tutorial fight so i was struggling with enc for a bit
>>
>>541111334
Hovering over the locked bit will give a hint. But not a very detailed one.
In general, if you strive to "do everything," you'll unlock most things. Like doing every quest, doing every zone, killing hard enemies, etc. But there are some really tricky or niche ones.
>>
>>541111334
Nope, you just do quests and play the game and sometimes you unlock things.
I'm not too fond of that concept, but at least it makes you play different things before you always roll the OP classes.

it does lag, eventually. i have five or six tiles full of loot that's just dumped on the floor in my base, several followers working, and it feels like the game gets a little slow.

but i don't really think it's a serious issue. opening the search nearby items menu takes about half a second once you have that many items but most games have that kind of delay anyway

Every roguelike is a horror game.
>extremely punishing fail condition
>every enemy can kill you
>entire game is exploring a pitch black dungeon full of horrible monsters
>incredibly stressful and difficult even while being turn based
An fps realtime version of a roguelike would be heartattack inducingly stressful. Even the first person nethack mods are kinda spooky.

Actually that's something we could use, more first person roguelikes with sprites. Not lites either, the same exact gameplay only it's 2.5/3d. It's much more fun to explore mazes from the ground, and everything can look much cooler and more detailed when it doesn't have to be tiny tiles.
>>
>>541130072
The main issue there is in information. While it might be more tactile, it means that a monser right next to you takes up 90% of the possible pixels on screen, leaving 10% to communicate every remaining enemy to you.

Might be some way to make it work, probably by making interaction with that single monster more involved, but that's a change in gameplay.

genuinely dont get the point of gatekeeping df out of the rlg threads when its considered to be a major pillar of the trad roguelike genre at this point. Yeah, it doesnt play exactly like coq or angband or whatever but to say it's not a roguelike is silly and just keeps people out of the thread based on a "definition" that people who play roguelikes havent been able to agree on for 30+ years anyway
>>
>>541130668
bodyblocking and sightlines would obviously be more important, as would lighting.
I think it would be a neat effect. Smaller more common enemies would be shorter and narrower, letting you easily look around and see most of everything if you're fighting say orcs or wolves, but then giant horror monstrosities from hell or dragons bodyblock half the screen and are basically walking walls of flesh. It's a good contrast, especially if the goal is a horror game.

There's also the unique possibility of adding in vertical features if you go 3d. Actual staircases/bridges/flying/swimming. Really impractical and difficult top down, very easy and natural in first person.

>>
>>541158240
Oh, you wanted a NOT retarded point. Sorry, that didn't seem to be what you were going for, so I settled for prompting you to continue.

Zero decisions concerning what I like are dependent on any authority at all. If an authority decided that steak was made of sawdust, I would still like steak. The steak I like would still be made of meat. The steak I like would just be a different concept from the steak the authority governed. An alteration of an external concept does not alter an internal concept.

The topic wasn't "does it work" the topic is "is it good". The midpoint between those is "is it worth doing", but that's a conversation for after you've decided how good, how effective, and how expensive it is. Switching between the three freely just halts all possibility of meaningful and not retarded conversation.

While it's true that you can't halt the flow of millions of people choosing to do things which they enjoy. Gatekeeping people out of playing dwarf fortress seems really really hard. Even gatekeeping people out of calling DF fortress mode a rougelike would be basically impossible if they all decided to do that, because you can't gatekeep other people out of their own actions, particularly when they will never read what you say.

You can gatekeep what discussion you willingly engage in on a tiny thread, cause that's not hard, and that's the gatekeeping in question.

Now I'm going to go gatekeep a glass of water into my body, and I'm going to do it despite the fact that thousands of people, if not hundreds, are involved with water.
>>

Can someone provide sound, logical reasoning for classic roguelikes needing ETERNAL updates? Why can't they just be released, done and over with? Why do they always need "fixing"?

The constant "updating" just seems to result in degeneration of the game's nature to suit a specific handful of players. I don't get it.
>>
>>541189026
Because most of the time the devs can't think of everything upon release. No human is perfect. And everything men creates is a work in progress in the first place.
>>
>>541189026
it's difficult to tell apart legitimate criticism from degeneration to suit suiting a specific handful.

>>541194237
>There are myriads of RLs, and even more if we count forks. Which is the point: if you wanna change something, just make a new fork or whatever.
Don't act obtuse over something this simple. You were talking about a singular roguelike getting updates, changing. That inherently implies things changing or staying the same within one project, one roguelike, and argument is about that and only that. 'Play a different game/fork' is not a valid respone because the developer of one roguelike, the only person in control of change, is the developer of only that one, specific game and only has interest in things concerning it.
You, as a consumer, might hop onto a different thing if you want something different, he can only change that one thing he cares about. Expecting him to make a new fork/game for every change is absurd, especially since the same is achieved by you downloading an older build.
Roguelikes get updates because the players want it, and therefore the developer wants it. Those few who don't can still play old builds. There, two different levels of 'why' answered, now stop asking dumb questions and play something.

The post I replied to saying that was the one to mention players getting tired as the reason for the changes, which, as you yourself are implying and somehow thereby also contradicting yourself, has nothing to do with the game, but with their desire for something different/new; in which case they're welcome to try another RL, not arbitrarily deface an established one to fit their every want and need. Much like you're trying to do with my conversation: if you think it's dumb, ignore it and/or talk about anything else; no one's forcing you to reply, so why are you trying to force ME to stop posting? Likewise, audiences should force games to change for them. That happens with no other kind of game.

It's a product, not a piece of art. It exists to bring entertainment to the consumer through gameplay. Regardless if you agree or disagree with that statement, it's value is derived from the observer and not in of itself. Maybe there is some metaphysical value from the latter but it bears no impact on what a customer desires and I can't be bothered to give a shit about what a bunch of code wants. In case the customer is someone like you: older builds. There is no impact of whether or not it changes to people like you who can just download the older, locked in time version. You already received few different answers why change happens on multiple levels.
>The post I replied to saying that was the one to mention players getting tired as the reason for the changes, which, as you yourself are implying and somehow thereby also contradicting yourself, has nothing to do with the game, but with their desire for something different/new
It's not contradictory, what the players see is what the game is, and that something transforming from a new, fresh experience into a known, stale thing is the natural progression of everything. To dismiss this is to ignore reality of how things are, you are not working with a constant, eternal turnover of new customers that you can ignore what the current playerbase thinks and wants, and what the majority wants is more.
>not arbitrarily deface an established one to fit their every want and need
Describing updates as defacing is purely on you, and AGAIN: old builds.
>Much like you're trying to do with my conversation: if you think it's dumb, ignore it and/or talk about anything else; no one's forcing you to reply, so why are you trying to force ME to stop posting?
Because you are doing a dumb thing, not the question, but shutting off the responses you dislike by being willfully ignorant and living in your own reality. You refuted no response in a satisfying manner but plowed through. It's and eyesore.

You get negative HP more than the HP you lose.
(In this game you don't die until your HP is lower than negative HP, which by default is 0 but this item lowers it further)

Archmage is weak to surprise attacks but it has a self healing spell that can crit, and a passive that makes a shield per point of damage you heal. In lategame with 80+% crit rate that means a 3000+ damage shield
regardless of class a piece of equipment that gives flat +30 hp is far and away better than +7% damage for your class's element or some other offensive effect for the first 25 or so levels. Mainly you'll find that on lanterns and cloaks

The problem with Arborus is that it's a fuckin lead-weight albatross around your neck.
Any build that wins WITH Arborus is a build that would've won without it.
Trying to focus on making the actual treeform/summons work is suicidally impossible.

>>541213347
Rift Wizard 2 has evolved to pure esoterica, I think the dev balance there tends more towards "degenerates to the preferences of a small niche of players" because... It'd be like if the PoA dev decided to nerf every successful combo because he wanted you to "engage with the mechanics and not just pick good powers" or something
>>
>>541221098
that does sound pretty good. i saw it in the perks when i was looking at it, but 3000 is a lot. my archmage died already, level one, ha... i made a bunch of mistakes, so i should try again.
bulwark was great, i got about 100 armor with about 100 armor effectiveness... but ultimately got killed by a mage that chunked me for 300+ a bunch of times.
i should have stayed clear of those areas until i got some form of magic defense online.

in the base that i discovered, there were some things like 'training facilities' that needed energy. will i discover what that is on my own? no spoilers please
>>
>>541223021

Is there some reason this monster won't die? He's been at 0 HP for many turns now...
>>
>>541058967
Ok /rlg/ I DL'd Roguelegends Dark Realms and played it.
Kind of ok. No tiles really got to me- I didn't used to mind, but I've kind of gotten spoiled with all these gorgeous tilesets lately. Shit sure looks nice when you ain't gotta fit it in a terminal output.
The ASCII allocations didn't make much sense either. really. Monsters seem to be psuedo-rand-gen and you can reinitialize the world, maybe?

No auto-explore seems pretty awful with the level design having those sort of... Craggy walls? You know the ones. Where you don't fully reveal every wall without doing some difficult snaking path to see one hidden tile.

Spell system seems neat, though I only did two runs as apprentice. One run I was haunted by a "green dancer" who appeared at the end of a hallway- I moved away, which was the wrong answer as the "green mist surrounding you" turned red and she stalked me- Appearing at the edge of the vision range, fleeing and disappearing once they broke LoS. Very neat, wondering if I could've done a different action or if there was some ritual to appease them (it looked like there might be, according to a note I stumbled into in the second world)

Might give it another shot tomorrow- I took a portal, ended up in an arena and crashed the game- There was some critter (a glassy eyed goblin, rag stuffed in his throat) that was keeping at the very edge of vision range and the game just flat out crashed when I used a Rune to Push another monster into it, so I feel like taking a break.

The writing is 50/50. Some nice atmospheric spooky, unsettling stuff. Some "bad SCP interview log" word salad that's just some dogshit stream of consciousness "oooh the terrible secret you don't know but I do oooh it's so horrible boooo hooo whoooaaa"

Did you do your homework, /rlg/? What'd you think of RL:DR?
>>
>>541231389
They use their mana as HP.
>>
>>541189026
The core of your thinking is incorrect. Developers are not thinking about the "best" thing to do, or what they "should" do. They are thinking about what they want to do. And often, what they want to do is spend time making the game they love. They enjoy tinkering with and expanding these games as a hobby so they do so.

Obviously, if a dev is just thinking "what is the absolute best way to spend my time for making the best quality roguelike for an audience" then the answer would not be decades of feature creep. But that is not their perspective. And as players, there's not much we can tell devs about how they 'should' be motivated, no more so than we would listen to someone telling us playing roguelikes is a waste of our time. Everyone in the world is just doing what they want, or are being forced to do at gunpoint.

i'm getting the idea that being bulky isn't how this game is supposed to go.
even with spell save pumped up, i'm still taking massive damage from these enemies.
in theory i could go antimagic, but i'm too talent- and attribute-starved below lv20 for that.

maybe the play is just... glass cannon
>>
>>541268147
Which difficulty is this?
You can survive most stuff by stacking +HP items from early gears. Bulwark also has nice HP, but no additional defenses against spells.
>spell save
Does nothing to damage. It helps preventing you getting debuffed by statuses.
But yes, Bulwark on Insane is sort of a glass cannon. Non weapon damage will kill you. Go in with Shield Slam to activate Counterstrike, then Assault. And if the enemy isn't dead, run away.
>>
>>541268147
If you are going to facetank you need all the possible boosts to do it right. Still, at the end of the day offense is the best defense, the enemy can't hurt you if they are dead.
>>
>>541260249
Lolno even in the 20s it's sketchy
>>
>>541268147
it's also unfortunate i died there - it was in this mountain temple with six minibosses. i was able to kill all of them. but the door is locked and there are some orbs in front of it, they spawn random enemies which immediately blast you with their strongest attacks while you're in a bad position touching the orb... well, it's on me, i had teleport, i should have used it to reposition.

I'd really like to play with this, but it seems dangerous if I want to get RF:+++ for Inner Flame/Blastmotes.
I guess it'd let me diversify a lot in lower tier spells- I lose a lot of armor, as a Mountain Dwarf though, and I get... Dispel Undead, Passwall, Martyr's and Sigil, maybe Olgreb's that might be good?
Feels like I can just train up Necromancy some here, but I'm retarded when it comes to planning a spellbook, I never make it past Lair these days in nuCrawl
>>
>>541272278
Yeah, it's D:6, I should've quaff/read-ID'd all my stuff by now huh?
The other option was fleeing into unexplored territory, since the Ogre wandered in from behind me- Probably woke him up when I ran upstairs from a bad wight pack (all immediately 1 tile away from the stairs) and an Orc pack that closed in on the stairs before I cleared them out on stairs 1/2.
Don't worry, I'm drinking and reading right now bud. Thanks for the tips, I'll do better than 8 charges in a wand next time.

The canonical route is DEFE and go 100% all in on casting skills. Enemies should get deleted before they can take two steps towards you from the edge of your vision.
>>
>>541270560
>the bulky guy shouldn't be dying just like that, yeah?
Damage + death is how you get punished for playing poorly in whichever way one may have played poorly. If you could simply "pick the bulky guy" and then be hard to kill simply for that reason then the game would be easy.

Brawler has the high defense, low damage role you'd expect from bulwark. You can unlock it fair and square from the hidden compound, you'd want to play something fast and with good ranged attacks to fight the yaech slavers and avoid getting punched
For a melee class with a high damage 2 handed weapon style you'd expect Berseker to play like, try mindslayer or wyrmic. Although I've only played wyrmic as a shalore with the magic hybrid skill trees from level 30 areas in the DLCs

If you just want to stop getting oneshot Reaver and Corruptor have bone shield which completely stops the first 5 instances of damage per recharge but you'll be around level 20 by the time the skill is leveled
>>541270560
I don't mean to rub it in but those enemies spawned because you got a puzzle wrong
>>
>>541273324
I guess I'll do that once I splat.
I'm trying to not play De too much, I used to spam D- Demonspawn of Xom, which I'm just now realizing you weren't telling me to play and hope I get izi caster muts
Deep Elf, right. I soft-banned myself from that because I play wizards every time I get the chance and I didn't want to play Crawl the same way every time.
That was like ten years ago, I just don't think much of it anymore, except an aversion to picking DE. I end up trying to cast my way through the game anyways.

They haven't removed Deep Elves yet? Yeah, I'll try that after I splat.

>>
>>541273297
I'm a fan of learning summon small mamal so I can make space between me and the enemy. It's escape.

Among untrained level 1 spells:
Kiss of death has a cost, but doesn't miss and drain is a very powerful status against enemies who might 2 shot you. It's an example of setup.
Slow and soul splinter are setup, if unreliable.
Poison vapors, foxfire, shock, and magic darts are not much better than throwing rocks, but are all somewhat free. Such softening-damage is technically setup.

With 0-skill throwing weapons, needles or boomerangs can handle ogurs before they reach you sometimes. If it doesn't work, you can decide if you want to retreat or not and try again. A nice curare basically solves most early living targets.

You'll notice a trend, in that getting full advantage of these involves NOT spamming them when they aren't working. The correct number of wand-charges to use is the number of spaces between you and the target minus 1.

Among 2 and 3, lvl spells,

Blink is escape, but should be used before you start actualy fighting so you can make space on the way to the staircase.
Grabeclaw is escape that works similarly, since it isn't dependable.

Mercury arrow is setup. Jinxbite is setup.

Swiftness and sigil of binding are escape. They are far more dependable, but have to be placed early and used soon, so you would be forced to retreat after only a few turns of combat, regardless of how it is going, and could still get hit with a lucky AoO.

Some of these might want some skill investment. However, Launch Clockwork Bee doesn't need it. Sitting at 50% spell failure rate, it still requires that you cast it from half a screen away from your opponent, meaning that getting hit with spell failure effects and corroded doesn't matter. In the case where it works, this bee can attempt to solo anything really risky and fight next to you against anything mildy strong, until you're through lair.

>ignoring spells.

>>
>>541276686
>and wands with a % on them since they can't be tried over and over in this kind of hit-and-run ideal strategy.
Ok, well, you've got a god for a reason. In the case where you're particularly desperate for some utility, you should consider unnknown altars and/or picking a god which does something

Dance god solve any 1v1 fight where you can live a few turns, which greatly narrows the fights which might actually kill you.
Nemelex and makleb blast
Okararu and TSO buff
xom sometimes gives followers so you can avoid hard combat and wait for one of those until the floor is clear
Yeradreidel has a button that gifts you followers and another that throws fire. Half the gods give you summons or a buff if you ask nice.
If you choose a god that doesn't, you ought to have a plan for how they help you win. with what they do have.

>no gods either
Well, if you can't use pots, scrolls, wands, rechargeables, spells, gods, or throwables, and you don't get lucky with artifact armor and weapons or jewls, there's always one more thing you can do to avoid death, and that's clear out the area immediately around each staircase when first exploring a floor, so that you have some place to run in case a big fucker shows up instead of getting mad at other people because you got caught with your pants down.

And in the absolute last case
where you're right next to the enemy
and you fucked up and lost your retreat path
and they WILL kill you
then you use-id that shit in your pockets, because the odds of you finding TP/blink/summon/fear/vulnerability is 4/19 or so per turn, and slightly better since you know perfectly well which 2 stacks of scrolls are probably identify and/or tp and these escape scrolls are generally less rare than others.

The first weapon is always just better pathing,
>>
>>541273581
yeah i unlocked it earlier with my bulwark.
idk what you mean avoid getting punched. you want to kill the slavers first so the slaves go free, right? there's an achievement for freeing 30 of them.

>>541278461
Brawler can use armor, but it can't use weapons. Its damage scales with gloves.
It is a low-ish damage class but with a lot of strong utilities and defense.
The most important thing about the class is to unlock the Combination Kick talent and make sure to kick anything that looks dangerous with it. This will strip them of their sustains. The rest is up to you.

9 Kings looked breddy gud. Haven't seen enough that I'd recommend it as an EA title, but I'd hardly ever recommend you buy Early Access.

Slay the Spire is a real classic, iconic genre defining stuff- Genuinely, it kicked off an entire fleet of roguelikte deckbuilders, wildly popular. A bit dated but still a standout paragon.

Hades is, itself, also guilty of that. A bit too reflex based for the old men of /rlg/ I'd wager, you're doing a lot of dodge rolling and what not in real-time. But otherwise a standout that informed its own little genre niche. Really pretty game, endless dialogue as you cycle through the runs- Supergiant has a great host of writers and the gameplay is pretty nice too, if the action-combat is your thing. Otherwise, I'd try Slay the Spire.

I dunno, but I'd love to play one. You roll for different adventurers and try to get as low as you can on the dungeon before they kick the bucket. Not necessarily permakilling your units, but ending the run like in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
There's already a lot of gachas with "roguelike modes" that are actually Slay the Spire inspired more tha anything, so I'm expecting a gacha with proper roguelike mechanics to drop in the next 2 years. If Wizardry Variants Daphne is actually doing good numbers and that one has character permadeath (but you have to be incredibly retarded for it to happen), then I think we're close to seeing a gacha roguelike.

there's no way to scale damage with these guys? the only way i can tell is berserk, which boosts their stats if one dies.
and i have to pump CUN to get more at a time. and you're fragile af, only a lucky undeath blood saved me from dying to random mage lightning, i was level 9 in a level 1-7 dungeon and there were some close calls. the tier 3 minotaur summon is worse than the tier 1 wolf and half the time he hits me with his AOE bellow.
wow this is ass.

Their attributes scale with your Mindpower, so you level Willpower + Cunning and find mind power level
They inherit your % damage and % penetration (focus on 1 damage type, like physical or fire)
You can roll mental crit and their stats will be affected by your crit modifier
(Yes, none of this shit is documented in the description)
>minotaur
It's useless due to the terrible HP. The best minions are
>Ritch (early game)
>Turtle (taunt, keeps enemies from hitting you, it has crazy HP when you have good mindpower)
>Dragon (the best all around minion, has massive AOE and high durability)
Situational
>Rimebark/Hydra (only useful with Through The Crowds prodigy, which allows them to blast through you safely)
>Spider (only useful for the entrance passive that pins enemies)
>Wolf (it reduces enemy phys res with the entrance passive)
Bad
>Minotaur
>Golem (better than Mino, but it is a melee creep that gets stuck)
>>
>>541329642
should i go for heavy armor and shield? i get psiblades and mind but str melee will juat get me killed. str is useless to me but +str items are not rare, i can equip them and buy the perks.

>>
>>541330473
>str melee

>>
>>541330473
Some people swear by armor but I wear robes because +all resist is good enough for me, plus I need mindpower and % damage on robes.
There's no real way to avoid dying as Summoner. It is the squishiest class in the game. Turtle will do a lot of work protecting you but it can't save you forever.
I don't recommend playing it at the start since it requires a fair amount of experience to steer, and it is worse in the base campaign than in the orc campaign due to the terrible dungeon layouts fucking with summons.
>>
>>541330768

Robes give damage resistance against all damage types. Up to 15% (?) based on tiers. It's a small amount but it goes a long way.

Pretty sure I'm fuckin up this build so far (I meant to take Danger Sense but the mouse controls are so fucky and I've got this dogshit talent tree) but hopefully I can piggyback off the anon that just did a run.

I feel like what I should look for is to go 1-1-5-5 in Gravity and abuse that with the phys reduction in Timeline Threading at 1-1-5-5? Maybe take either Energy or Stasis, for some more survivability cooldowns?
I absolutely cannot figure out Paradox, no clue how I'm supposed to interact with it but iirc I'm only getting like two more category points from here on out.

Sorcerer is such a meme class
You can really tell that a lot of build options were made with no consideration to scaling past the first 10 cycles
On a different note, Uspori surprised me a lot. It's actually really really good.
>>
>>541359845
The intended difficulty is supposed to be Cycle 1, I've heard, yeah. Worm is just extra cheese, getting something you can keep repraying on.

I've never tried Uspori though, was the familiar really that good? You're just praying in a corner with 4 billion ranks in Frostpulse mostly, aren't you?
>>
>>541355383
Anything that starts acting like a video game with "stats" and "classes" is a major turn off.
If it's more like Drifters then I don't mind.
>>
>>541361135
>pray
>crystalform
>stand still -> frostpulse, do sorcerer special ability, summon jade bros to tank damage, apply freeze, replenish ihra protection
Repeat.
Frostpulse obviously is really strong but it lacks single target damage, so I did struggle a bit against the blood prince and the king.
The familiar from uspori is ok, probably one of the better familiars which isn't saying much in cycles beyond 20, however the cool thing about uspori is the paralysis debuff, instantly reducing the speed of enemies. The enemies can shrug it off but if you can keep reapplying it you can gain a huge edge against enemies with ridiculous speeds like the king. I was taking him down from over 650 to 10.
>>
>>541361754
Oh, I got mixed up, I just took it for granted you took Projection with Crystal Form/Ihra/Sorcerer/Worm, but obviously you had to get into life/poison.

This is what I mean about having trouble finding "new combinations" in POA, because certain synergies are already so strong you're just legitimately deliberately and arbitrarily handicapping yourself.
Not that Druid Star Cult clearing everything from Cycle 1 to 32 on entrance is "cool" but like... It's obviously the strongest build in the game (Unless you want to push high floors in Maqbara's Path of Dust, in which case there's a different (but mandatory) build to reduce the eventual 100% resists and summon on entry to keep yourself from dying turn 1)
>>
>>541358459
Paradox is pretty fucked, I too don't know what to do but try to keep it low and pray. Hidden Resources prodigy helps you ignore it at least.

>>
>>541363885
I was noticing the same thing. I was kiting a gnoll pack around a wall and they were killing my summons as they all followed me but not taking any damage themselves.
Also it seems completely impossible to control whether summons stay in place and hold enemies back or trail along behind you.
Also also I hate how summons can't seem to attack enemies out of los but enemies CAN and WILL attack them even if they're around a corner.
>>

>>
>>541361208
how will you make a story about a roguelike without stats or classes?
the original has them
>>
>>541368675
I've tried to tell me allies to stay in place but they still break off and spend turns running towards me or vacillating between targets.
I think I saw some noise that the LOS change was a big one because the Devs thought it was too strong to position your summons so that enemies couldn't target you- Like most "nu Crawl" changes, while I can't outright disagree with the harm offered, the solution seems to take much more than it gives.
Better players than me were having more wins than they deserved, though, so I guess I'll just have to suffer in low-skill land while the game gets harder and I don't.

Assuming air wizzard. Take 1 step back, letting the dog stand where you can maybe doublehit its square. Use shock on the dog and scorpian, and then doubleshock the scorpian. Then, head for the nearest staircase and use swiftness as soon as it will last long enough to get you out.

If the noise might attract any more problems, then just tank the dog attacks and rush a better chokepoint.

And lastly, if you can't handle what you might find in a special vault like that, don't open the door in the first place and come back after another half a floor.

If it's not a sealed/runed door, I'm not in control- Maybe I could notice in the future "Hey, this is a pre-built tile" and interrupt the explOre" sure. That seems like counterintuitive design but... Sure.

An orc stepped through behind the dog, so I lined up the Phantom/Scorpion. The dog was wounded and stepped back to let the scorpion out, but I was making great progress on thinning out the horde and managed to just tank it.
Forgot that the walking scroll is fully poison immune. I just bait them out to the open and burn some mana on Airstrike to bypass the bear's berserk and phantom's EV right after this screenshot, back to cruising to another ownfault.

Two blink scrolls and a swiftness cast- Death post incoming
>>
>>541394572
There's no kidding about it. That's swiftness into use-id tp scroll. You might be able to get out of sight just with the swiftness and fight only a few of them.

You could try to get enough piercing hits to kill everything in there before you run out of mana, but your odds suck.

When you get shafted 3 floors and you reveal 80% of a map and it's mostly empty and mostly without doors, no you don't open the few doors. You also don't go inside of that giant white structure in the middle of the map, because that thing is probably death. You place a whole bunch of area-exclusions and you find a staircase, and THEN maybe you pick a fight out of depth if it is made of weak enough enemies.

Shaft = don't press 'o' for a bit. You can't afford it.

That's enough Crawl for tonight. I definitely should've cast blink as soon as I had line of sight to the end of that horizontal corridor on the lower floor, instead of waiting till the Centaur caught up halfway through, I'd have taken two less arrow attacks probably.

Next up on the menu- We take off this dumb scroll talisman so we can cast Vile Clutch(9% without talisman now), soon. Maybe Summon Forest. Feels like I need some better answers to dangerous targets. I'm worried about Sucks to Save fodder like Petrify.
Are Deep Elves supposed to train Fighting?
>>
>>541395462
The best case for it is to use it as a Gnoll since you're gonna be leveling up Shapeshifting and every spell school anyway, so might as well use it if you get some good spells early on.
You could also pivot into a caster if you start a Shapeshifter Octopode/Felid and you find some good spells/an early Vehu/Sif altar instead of whatever other god, since you're basically trading those early points in Shapeshifting for up to +4 skills in every spell school.

I manually opened that one actually. I don't know enough about dungeon gen to know if stairs are more likely to be inside or outside rooms- Maybe it's supposed to be some kind of tower, descending into it or something?
Definitely was wary of that big white structure at least, that much was intuitive. I took every corner with a fresh cast of Battlesphere and full mana.

...Am I supposed to train Invocations on Makhleb? I figure I am, I wanted to try something different here, figured since I had Sublimation I could go for it but...

>>541395462
I've seen and passed it a few times but I got it pretty early here and I figured... 5 ranks in a school and 5 ranks in shapeshifting is 8 ranks in a school and 8 ranks in a school is more XP than 5+5... And it's 3 ranks in EVERY school. It only gets more XP efficient if you push it further but, as mentioned, I think I'm already wanting to open up some tier 5 spells.

I'm not sure about the XP allocation long term but this feels pretty strong. Battlesphere was castable pretty much right away once I found it. I don't know exactly what Hex I'd want to stay at Tier 4/finish training Shapeshifting to 7, but I could see it happening, especially with the +3 to Hexes on DE
>>
>>541395640
when I go DEFE/DECj, I usually don't bother training any combat skills until Lair. Once I'm in Lair itself I have enough power to shred everything already and the only thing left are high level spells that will take forever to train for, so I swap over to fighting/dodge/shield/armor and get those to a decent level before I go back.
>>
>>541396489
I'll mention those are the main(only?) pure blaster archetypes and you'll definitely want to heavily invest in combat skills of you're going necro/ice/alch/etc... since those seem like almost hybrid classes now.

I recently had good results with alchemist after I realized mercury arrow is BUSTED if you pair it with melee. The aoe weakening is incredibly strong and affects almost everything no matter it's resistances. That plus confusion from melph and crowd control with olgreb lets you effectively one on one basically anything even with very modest abilities(I was playing as a merfolk and facetanking elephant herds in a robe with no shield)

This build has great mass damage but poor single target. I struggled the most against the obelisk boss and the king, though the elf queen actually came down pretty easy. Defences were really good so it was survivable, with poison effects being very annoying.
In any case with a morlock victory I finally got a victory with every single race.
I've got every class except the jackalform faggot and every god except the dragon one.
The summoning aspect of morlock really is the least important bit, what's crucial is being able to get extra charges on every entrance. However I'd still rather pick a better culture and zealot class over this.

The first pack I used it on was Yaks in a 2x2. It's proven a bit more useful against bee swarms and hydras, but I think I lowrolled a lot in the first go- It took 4 or 5 casts per 2-3 yaks and I ended up having to fire off Swiftness and jet near oom.

Feeling pretty well satisfied with Leda/Summon Forest/Bjorg. Not sure if I should train Forest some more or put points into defense now. I'm imagining getting Dragon Call ready (Maklheb seems like a bit of a wash desu, took the legion brand over Tyrant or Fanatic)

The staff is also a Transloc enhancer, I got rPoison and rElect quaff-IDing. Chainmail sucks ass, +11 {Bane} basically.

I'm not sure how to pilot a run past here though. I've got the rCorr ring, do I do Slime:4? Or should I carve out Orcs, Shoal or Lair:5 first?

>2d19 no-miss with knockback% based on enemy size and spellpower
>caps out at spell-power 100
>On move, stuns .4-.9 turns
>On attempt to move into object, 2d11 extra daamge

Per mana, that's (2*19+(chance%)*2*11)/4mp,
or max (38+(%)*22)/4
or max 9.5+5.5*% per mp

Magic dart deals 1d8 per mp, spending only 1 mp per turn.

Searing ray costs 2mp and deals 2d8 damage, which is two magic darts, but can miss. To-hit max is 17.25.
the written fomula for accuracy is 1d(to-hit + 1) - 1 ≥ 2d(2 * EV - 1)/2
1d(to-hit + 1) -1 = (1d18.25)-1, for our purposes
2d(2 * 5 - 1)/2 = 2d(9)/2, is about 73%
2d(2 * 10 - 1)/2 = 2d(19)/2, is about 45%
2d(2 * 15 - 1)/2 = 2d(29)/2, is about 24%
Orb of fire has ev of 20, so don't worry to much about the high end here, until later.
So, against minor evasive enemies, you deal 2d8 *.73 = 2d5.84 damage per turn, with 2mp on the first turn and 1 on the three turns after that.

Orb of destruction deals 9d21 for 7mp, so that's max 189 damage and 27 damage per mp, a bit more than double what mystic blast does. However, this hits 1 target max, requires multiple turns of setup, requires a clear path between your and your target for multiple turns, will often overkill massively and so waste damage. Hitting at point blank does 30% damage, meaning 8.1 damage per mp.
So, when surrounded point blank, mystic blast massively outdamages orb of destruction. per mp, and potentially per turn.

It also pushes enemies back, which can give the player more turns on which to cast without being hit, or do extra damage.

If the enemies have AC, orb of fire again has 20 ac, so 15 is somewhat high and often enemeis have 5 or 10. While orb of destruction essentially does not care about paltry enemy ac, early games spells are largely shut down by early ac. 1d8-1d20 = zero damage most of the time. However, mystic blast does about 19 on average, or 28 average if you knock someone into a wall, meaning that it reasonably damages through armor.

A vault warden, who is mildly tanky, is 10 ac and 10 ev, with 58 to 108 hp, meaning mystic blast does average 19-average 5 ac = 14, or 23 damage against a medium-size target.
That's about 58/14 = 4.1 turns to kill, or probably 4 turns with 1 knockback, meaning the warden should only hit you 2 times with correct positioning.

1 free hit on approch, 1 free hit for knockback, 2 hits where you let them hit you.

Just don't try to knock back a gold dragon repeatedly in order to survive, unless the knockback works even on large monsters.

I'm assuming I must've just had my power too low, yeah. Probably something like 7/3 for Conjuration/Tloc- Or worse. Apparently training to target skill level when you have an active skill bonus (like from Inkwell Talisman) shuts off early.

rCorr really only helps with the ranged acid-slimes, and for them it's basically mandatory.
Big ice-slimes hit super hard unless you have rC 1 or better. They appear as the bosses for ice-vaults sometimes, and are a real threat at that time. However, you just kind of scale past them. Once you can handle these well enough to really consider doing slime, you don't actually need the rC+ anymore. It's still nice.

Green slimes appear in massive waves, which can be handled many ways, but a wave of green slimes are a real threat until you start lair, and then a small threat in valuts when they've got haste buffs. By the time you're doing slime, you have to be able to nearly ignore their attacks and do enough dps to keep them from fusing.

The real issue in slime is that you can't use the walls to your advantage as well, meaning you need to leave enemies near yourself in order to limit the number of other enemis you are dealing with. If trying to use a slime to bodyblock will kill you, you probably can't do slime. That, and the trampling-slimes give a damage check.
Rockslime has an insane AC of 27, ev 2, will 60, with HP 39-80 and *1.2 speed. On top of that, they have trample, meaning you can't depend on stairdancing.

Lastly, golden eye swarms will confuse you, which means you can't depend on your general ability to retreat or kill fast unless you have willpower.

That makes slime sound like a pure stat check, and it kind of is, more than a resistance check. You can have specific answers for each of these. We aren't deep enough in the game that you're expected to have a specific set of narrow tools which remain relevant. You should probably have an answer for when 2 teleporting stunning jellies and a shining malmute eye pop up in 2 turns, however.

There's another factor. It's not just 1 range, it'e 2, and with vehumet it's 3! You can do enormous amounts of damage to large swarms using this and throw enemies back before they even have a chance to hit you far enough to get hits in with other spells.
The rotation of blast->blast->orb kill the chaff, throws the bigger enemies away, and then lets you orb for full damage with a buffer turn to blast again before anything can touch you.
It's insanely powerful.

I was about to try full sending it- Step back, quaff ID for brilliance, sphere, cannonade and try to force an inner flame, maybe with vulnerability scroll.

But then I remembered getting Fireball is lame and pointless and I can just pay the passwall tax to escape on the northern stairs(the downstairs are cooked, right next to 2xdouble ogre, manticore, wide open).
2 more floors to go and I'll go do Lair like a good boy, I promise

I like roguelikes as a concept but I always keep getting bored and frustrated. The only games I somehow managed to get a clear in are DCSS (MiBe), Tangledeep (primarily Floramancer) and Shiren 1 (DS), but I don't think I'll ever play any of these again. I tried ADOM, Jupiter Hell and Shiren 5 but for some reason I can't just stick with them for long enough to win at least one run.
Thanks for subscribing to my blog.

Can you recommend me some? If they're more like Shiren it'd be perfect I think.
The problem is I do like how more complex and longer games look and feel, at least at first. I've also been wanting to get into ToME4 for the longest time, for example, but the sheer scale of it makes me hesitant to even try.

FUCKING FINALLY

I struggled a lot but finally got my upuat win.
And I was actually really happy with this build. Effect stacking really is the key in higher cycles. This one is a stand still build which takes a while to really get going but the growth of damage is exponential and, meanwhile, it's very survivable thanks to high armour, low enemy accuracy and the ihra-kairos skirt combo for constant protection. The huge healing from hazar also helped, but I didn't really need it, I spent most of the run at 100% or 99% health after the build got going. The 2 divine interventions were right at the beginning of the run with the floating romboid psychic fuckers.
The talwar was key to let me smash the blood dungeon effortlessly. Enemies couldn't harm me and the stacks of bleed disappeared every time I attacked.
The king was firethemed, so I had huge resistance to his attacks and he also resisted mine, but my damage scaled far better so I just melted him while he couldn't really hurt me. Pretty neat.

The only shame is that I really didn't use the features of upuat at all. The class just sucks. The same build with priest would be far, far stronger.
>>
With this I finally got my win with every class, culture and religion. Each on a different cycle, I never went back to cycles I had previously defeated.

Many such cases when you have a lot of mass damage but poor single target.
>Have you done all the prestige classes?
Not even close, but I do a different prestige every game. I think I'll try horrorform next.
>Summons are really weak this high so I'm trying to make it a sacrifice build
There are some familiars which scale well with high willpower but mass summon builds just don't work all that well in later cycles by themselves, having some effect trigger on each individual summon or on ally death is a must have.
>>541777530
It has a very unique visual style being pixelated but oddly detailed with shadows and what not. You can tell that Ulfsire (dev) had no background in art because some designs look really weird, like the big worm boss. However the design itself of the enemies is really cool imho.
afaik no way to turn it ASCII. Dev thought about it but I think he never got to add it.

The shit's rougelite-like, in that it's whole genera (vampire survivors and brotato) is based on runs with an upgrade tree you level fully in less than 6 hours.
It's so minor but at least the genera is NEXT to the genera that is next to ours, and nobody knows what else to compare them to.

Given that argument, old flash games based on upgrades are "rougelite-likes", which is incorrect.

So again, what should people compare horde survivors to other than the 3 other horde survivors? Is there some really old horde survior that we can use? Call them "pong-likes" or whatever the fuck?

Heavily influenced by Nethack and Rogue but the difference was taking a turn based game into a real time action game, hence, making it a very competent action rpg but not a roguelike. You are correct to suspect it has roguelike themes and influences though.

Why are you acting like its a bad thing? There have been tons of evolutions in the Boomer Shooter genre to the point a lot of people who enjoy modern BS don't enjoy original Doom unless its ported over and remade with a lot of modern conveniences.

Anything polished, with variable difficulty, lax permadeath or something you're not too familiar and invested in-
I used to have a lot of fun just splatting different combos in DCSS while things like "Elf" and "Bladehall" and "Vault" were a distant myth. Getting to Orc was a real banger and I didn't much care if I got triple-doubled by 11 Orc Priests.
Jupiter Hell isn't too hard, as long as you're not deadset on playing the hardest difficulties and challenge mode conducts and splatting doesn't ever feel too unfair or like a huge setback. I still have to look up routing info for branches, personally, but you don't even really need to do that to notch a couple wins
Tome4, (Girl)CoQ have non-permadeath modes but are still fun to explore.
Rift Wizard 1 is a lot of fun to explore combos in (stay away from RW2, degen balance imo) and the same for POA, both without being upsetting losses of time investment when you die.

nta but it's UnReal World.
It's an open ended, open world survival roguelike set in early medieval Finland.
The game has a variety of systems, such as custom character creation with several cultures to pick from (each with particular bonuses), seasonal weather, wild animals with unique behaviours for each specie, randomly generated villages, barter-based trading, quests, different ways to obtain food (hunting, trapping, growing crops, gathering berries and herbs, trading), food preservation (through salting, drying and smoking), nutrition (so just eating bread alone won't sustain you), layered armour system, combat with targeted body parts, wounds, travel by boat or skii, building outposts anywhere, skills upgrading through continuous use, item quality modifiers, certain tools and materials being better suited for certain actions (for example there are several different types of axes, for logging, for crafting, etc) and even spells, though not fireball or teleportation, more like traditional Finnic folklore, such as throwing the first catch of fishing in the spring back into the water in order to please the spirits and guarantee better fishing success throughout the season.
It's a very sovlfvl game that's not really about epic fighting (though you can do that, if you want), but more so about finding your own place in a wild land while surviving. Cold, thirst, hunger, disease and wild animals will be your enemy far more often than humans. You can choose to live in a village, make your own homestead, live as a nomad chasing game and sleeping in a fur tent, explore the land doing quests or just watch the crops slowly grow over the summer while cooking bean soup for dinner and going to the sauna.

Speaking of screenclear, great grognards of the thread: Am I cooked? Too spread out in spell schools? Too retarded to get good parchments? Do I take Fireball/Freezing Cloud/LRD or Ozocubu's Refrigeration (from Veh)? It seems gimped, but my only AOE options being once the enemy closes to near melee range/splattering my own cannons to cast Hailstorm/Blast feels real bad.

You can generate a ton of inflame stacks with Ape. Take off all your items except for an off-hand weapon/shield. Get your speed to at least 50, and then stack strength for inflame stacks on all your attacks. Use Technique (if your class is Mubarizun) or Stand Ground (if your class is Unataak) to activate more attacks per turn. Humbaba, Pallas or plenty of other gods will work fine.

Lulwy if you want a dommy mommy.
Eyth because they canonically both exist and don't exist, don't answer prayers, has no bodily incarnation in the world, and thus, is the only deity in both games you cannot kill and has tricked the world into believing they never existed in the first place. Well, it's coming along. Not great on the resists stacking front though, I might be able to scour some shops. There's like 4 gravitambourines I want to grab just for the meme though I can't afford that either.

Pretty much every spell under the sun is visible by now. Gonna go with Firestorm I think- Getting Polar Vortex castable seems harder and less rewarding, in all honesty, if it's going to shit on my spellforged. Everything else is pushing 90% power.
Pretty sure I don't actually waste time on training Evocables, even with all this garbage clogging my inventory.
Dunno if I can do a Zigg, even with Rimeblight and Firestorm. Maybe if I pick up Splinterfrost Circle? I could forget Cannonade, it's starting to feel a little too weak. I'm worried I'll regret it once I need to punch into beefier targets, though I'm doubtful if the Inner Flame synergy will pack a punch in that scenario anyways.

Well. I can definitely get Firestorm up by the end of Vault, before Depths. I'll worry about it then.

Diablo was originally going to be a roguelike, which is why all the characters move on a grid.

IIRC, the company (that eventually became Blizzard North after the buyout) decided to make it real-time at the last second.

Something I've noticed in Achra. This Horror Giant midboss does an insane amount of damage in melee, counterattacks even if it's not his turn, and even if you can tank it he puts scorch stacks that will one shot you through divine intervention.

But he's also 15 speed and his counter attacks only work in melee. What an unfair boss to pull if you're melee, but as a ranged guy I can stand here and kill him for free.

Ah nigger don't hate me because I'm fast, nigger. Maybe if you got rid of that old yee yee ass Jure bitch you'd get more hits on your turn. Oh better yet, maybe Ehekatl will give you a lucky roll if she ever stop fucking meowing or acting like a cat, niggeerrrrrr

I had never beaten this prestige before, but I think I figured it out. You can use Oros to get a weapon that counts as Bare Fist, and then use Psiblade to turn that Bare Fist into a ranged 2H weapon that counts for the Mind Knight bonus. Unarmed damage scaling is crazy as usual.

Sil if you're playing as a human.

You pretty much need to be a combat expert and sing songs to survive the humanity gauntlet.

Yeah. The mandatory midboss (Horror Giant, Voggite, Robak or Jeweled Visage) or what color of KOMC you roll (Purple, Red, Blue or Green) each absolutely dumpster a particular set of weaknesses/archetypes.

It's kind of fucking gay.
You can check them in the Nemesis section, during character creation.
Horror Giant, as you say, slaps back and kills you if you're in melee and can't easily break his armor.
Voggite will chew through any minions and get large bonuses with defense piercing minimum damage and shuts out midrange damage fighters with Protection.
Robak is a piece of shit. Seeker AND Prescience? Warding AND Retort? How about go FUCK yourself, asshole.
JV will steal all your stacks, fill you with cancer if you hit it too many times and punish you for AOEing, to boot.

Obviously plenty of builds handle these without even thinking about it, but there's plenty more that don't.

the benefits just didn't feel very cohesive with the actual skill trees to me. I did beat it back on cycle 25, but I remember it took me forever to finally "get" the class
>>
>>541863945
Asi Malak will do the trick outside of Oros, too. Not that it's strictly (or non-strictly) better, mind you, than Tengu/Nartaka. You get the whole kit right upfront your way, no fussing about. Losing some of the damage conversions of the "hit all enemies in range if 2 handing" because of the astral conversion is well worth the unarmed archetype imo

Rat Banner goes crazy with Grave Chant. The Rat Flourisher spawns, then summons a Rat Peltast when it dies. Grave Chant also spawns a Cadaver for every allied unit that dies. So one Rat Flourisher gives you 4 allies in total.

Wait really? Is that a new thing because it would have saved many of my runs
>>
>>541869258
Ye.
I mean, you can fuckin... Shit, man, you can check on the enemies whenever you can see them.

In combat? Check the right side of the screen- Every enemy icon there, you can click on for an in-depth description of their abilities.

World map? Click on the enemy icon above the selection area- It shows you each enemy you'll face in each area on the world map and shows you all the area enemies in the upcoming zone once you're in subscreen. Click whichever one you wanna check out and hover over their abilities, see what stat is increased by the higher cycle.

And yeah. Nemesis, Powers, Armory on the character creation screen. All a huge help. You can see the prayers and weapons your class and religion get in the top right, too, if ya didn't know
>>
>>541869674
Yeah I know but when you can see the komc is anti melee and youre a melee build it's a little late, I didn't realize that the nemesis section show you what king you're gonna get if that's what you meant
>>
>>541872320
Oh, nah.
Just what they are in general. I was thinking, if you wanted to plan around all their abilities instead of playing russian roulette
>>
>>541869183
Anroth is just extremely powerful all around
>>
>>541867248
This.
It changes the difficulty a lot.
Robak and voggite are easily the hardest obelisk bosses while the horror giant is very easy in my experience.
And the astral dungeon bosses are also wildly varied in difficulty. In my experience the blood dungeon is very easy, so is the flower, while the mind warren is harder and the ice dungeon is a bitch.

Roguelikes with shock collars?
>>
Damn, I wish there was a Shiren game with classes and abilities and progression and stuff. I guess I could play Etrian MD again, but I don't like having a whole party and the game is kinda bad overall.
>>
>>541911487
Why is the game bad?
>>
>>541911687
You snowball pretty hard making it kinda boring, playing with an entire party is a chore and the AI for it is stupid, and the FOE (or DOE in that game) base raids get annoying.
Okay, it might not be BAD bad, but it's kinda mediocre at best.

man the difficulty ramps up a ton on floor 7+
beat the second boss and made it to the caverns and promptly had to retreat, i'm guessing I need to work my way back up through lower levels to gear up more or something
>>
>>541917653
It feels like you should retreat whenever you get to a new set of floors once you get a couple of equipment pieces there so you can ID them and level them up. It makes things easier without having to start from the very bottom.
Remember to always stock one crystal to return safely tho, that shit gets you out of pretty much any unwinnable boss fight.
>>
>>541919585
That kinda feels like cheating though... And empty padding...
I wonder if a fully naked is plausible.
>>
>>541919834
It sets your character back to level 1, it's not like you're cheesing the game. And you can't really do a fully naked run because you need at least one weapon to attack. I guess you could try to sneak past everything up until the boss, but since you need to kill the boss to even advance to the next level, I don't really kow how you could beat it.
Myabe using spells like in Parasite Eve, but they seem to be only useable once per trip to the dungeon, or at least I haven't played enough to see if you can use them more times.
>>
>>541922702
I don't mean naked as in no equipment at all, I mean starting naked and only using what you get during that run.
>>
>>541922935
You can probably do that, doing a full run without going back to the entrance to restock once.
I would've tried it before, but I really wanted those extra inventory slots. I was weak...

Got my dick stepped on in Vault:5 and all I got was a seething hatred for the game.

I had rF+++ and like 120 HP, I should've just popped an immolate scroll too. I really thought quaffing Haste/Brilliance on the downstairs would do it. Hindsight 20/20, I remember that whenever I heard V:5 mentioned back in the day 90% of strats were to "TP out of the ambush" instead of trying to bruteforce it.

Spellspark casting Permafrost Eruption with my Magma Cannon, Rimeblight and weaving Fire Storm with M.Blast didn't cut it. Maybe if I cast Rimeblight a couple more times? Should've realized. The game ender was the Ancient Lich chain petrifying me, though, and I was taking too much side damage heal quaffing to just firestorm him a couple times.
