Of the many issues of Silver's story, the main core issue is his story does not follow the formula of a character being steadfast in their goal. Silver questioning Mephiles multiple times gives the player a seed of doubt that he knows what he's doing. Blaze is never looked at this way because she is not only barely there but her choice, even though wrong from our view, is firmly asserted each time including her sacrifice . She displays the will to do whatever it takes and this looks "cool" to the viewer. The Blaze and Silver contrast in decisions was intentional to showcase Silver as more introspective and caring about the cost of freedom from a fiery tortuous future. Unfortunately that is lost due to many things the story failed to portray better but also lost on an audience made primarily of kids and teens that enjoy bad guys becoming good. Silver needed to be more certain in his "bad" ways to get people more interested in him and it's the rigidity of that expectation that cost Silver more than expected. This is part of why Silver didn't land as a character

At the same time, the boost games are really good too, especially Generations and Shadow Generations, and Unleashed probably had the best boost gameplay despite the game being bogged down by the lengthy Werehog stages. I've had good and bad times with all 3 eras. 8 bit Sonic games show how easy it is to break the formula. Slippery controls and unacceptable glitches show how hard it is to make Adventure style games which give more freedom. Short and controlled gameplay in Forces shows that just slapping on a boost won't make a 3D Sonic fun by default. I think they're all equal.
