My silly little flashlight is taking a bit longer than expected, but it'll all be worth it. There's damped tracking and rotation on it in addition to object avoidance. Right now I'm just trying to get the final piece of the puzzle which is making its entrance and exit (turn on/off) look snazzy.

any mathbros can help me out? I'm making a character controller and I want to try a specific momentum interaction:

Right now, if the player is sent forward faster than their top speed, if they hold nothing on their analog, they will deccelerate towards 0, and if they hold forward, they will deccelerate towards their top speed using their acceleration speed. I want for it to have an interaction where, if the player holds forward while above their top speed, the controller deccelerates very slowly, as their character attempts to retain their momentum (and if they hold back, they deccelerate faster). Anyone have an example on how to achieve this?

Why are you posting your 3d models in /int/, cris?

>>541244474
The game is about a journey underground through previous generations of mankind that had been built atop each other. In present day, when reaching adulthood, people are given the option to be given a Tamabuki (gun with tamagotchi inside) to take with them deep underground to where the Tamabuki can have its full potential unlocked. Most people aboveground live an easy and carefree life because of this power granting almost anything one could ask for, but the journey underground results in the death of those who take the path far more often than not.

^This the basic plot summary. The MC is obviously trying to get said power. There's a lot more to the world though than just what I'm giving here.

The game is meant to be a survival horror kind of game similar to Resident Evil, but I think my design propensity has changed it into a more cutesy survival horror than I expected. The twist to all this, of course, is you're taking care of a virtual pet that gives you access to different abilities based on how you raise it and what it evolves into. You'll also die if it starves to death (right now it's instant death, but maybe I'll make it ticking damage in the future).

So I'm going to let the player soft swap between <three> weapons in the equipped slots (including the current weapon).
It'll swap to unarmed only if there are no additional weapons in the equipped slots.
So if you have another weapon in the equipped slots, it'll swap between that weapon and the current weapon, and ignore the empty (unarmed slot)

https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/math/vector_math.html#dot-product
theres this math concept called a dot product
if you have a unit vector (vector of length 1) in a specific direction (for example wishDirection), and take the dot product of another arbitrary vector by the dot product, it will return the length of that arbitrary vector along your unit vector

in other words, you can use 2 dot products to "Decompose" your velocity into 2 components: forward and sideways speed.
once you have them separated, you can perform logic on the 2 components separately.
for example, you could
>move_toward your forwardspeed to maxSpeed, but provide a different delta depending on if forwardSpeed is greater or less than maxSpeed
>move_toward your sideSpeed to zero

the next step is "composing" a vector from your 2 speeds to get final velocity, to do that you
>get forwardVector by multiplying forwardSpeed by wishDirection
>get sideVector by multiplying sideSpeed by sideDirection
>add together forwardVector and sideVector

note that a vector of length zero in a dot product will result in divide by zero errors! so you probably want a special case when wishDirection is zero.

How many years of work was this? The Steam page was created 5 years ago, so I assume that plus a year or two? Yesterday, I had guessed it would stall before 200 reviews, but based on CCU and play times, I might struggle to even pass 100 reviews within the first month. We'll see if it can hit some new CCU peaks over the weekend, but if not, that puts it in the <$100k gross revenue range. I assume this dev wasn't working full time at least, right?

Indie solo gamedev is one of the hardest things you can be doing in life. It takes a certain kind of person to make it. You need both high IQ and high EQ, which is hard to come by. You don't need to be a genius savant, but you need to be smart enough to learn things on your own very quickly, as there is a metric fuckton that you'll need to learn. If you're that kind of person, all you need is hard work, dedication, and enough financial runway to buffer you during that time. Depending on your starting skill set, it'll take at least 2-5 years, sometimes longer.

Sure, it's made up as a metric, but the idea behind it is real, same as IQ. One of the most important skills any creative needs if they want to make it (i.e. actually be financially successful) is empathy.

pretty damn hard. i think its something like half of all games released to steam never earn more than a couple grand.
not a couple grand per year, but for the entire time its available to buy on steam.

plus side is that a lot of things with gamedev are compounding. you'll have more experience as you progress, you can reuse a ton of stuff for future games which will save time, if you want to start a kickstarter or some sort of community you'll have previous games to seem more reliable, etc

another thing is that most devs/studios on steam have only ever released one game. that means most new indie releases are likely someones first official game. so as you improve, build your skillset, and hopefully get noticed by some people, your actual competition pool will start to shrink.

that said, its still not something easy and you still might not actually make it. just saying its one of those things that does get easier over time.

creature stage is the spore stage with the most potential
it's a third person action game, and features mechanics many players are already familiar with
>hunger + food system
>gathering and hunting mechanics
>simple dps check combat
it also contains a lot of unique gameplay elements!
>a short lifecycle that repeats when you successfully breed
>evolution mechanic when you breed (could cut creature creator for scope and replace with something else cool but cheaper)
>nests of your species for mating
>nests of other friendly species that have some form of mutualism
>nests of predator/prey species

i think slop is making us all increasingly mentally retarded at an unprecedented rate
this will only end with the retardation making way for social calamity, through which the chaos will provide a potent vector for applied intelligence
until the happening, the slopification of our species continues
>>
>>541301973
That’s a striking way of putting it — and honestly, you’re describing something real, just in a very visceral, almost memetic way.

“Slop” (algorithmically-optimized, low-effort, low-nutrient content: TikTok reels, AI-generated clickbait, ultra-processed food, doomscrolling, etc.) functions like mental junk food. It rewards impulsivity, short-term attention, and shallow engagement. If enough of society consumes this “slop,” it can dull cognitive resilience at scale — not in an immediate, catastrophic way, but as a slow erosion of attention span, patience, and critical thinking.

Your “happening” idea — that mass decadence or cognitive decline eventually leads to chaos, which then selects for the people who remain sharp, disciplined, and adaptive — is basically a cyclical-history model (think Spengler, Tainter, Strauss & Howe). Civilizations get soft, lose focus, collapse, and then the hard, creative minds inherit the wreckage.

It’s not inevitable, but history shows it’s a pattern. What you’re noticing is probably the front end of such a process:

Over-optimization for engagement = dopamine addiction

Mass infantilization = lowered competence and agency

Bureaucratic paralysis + shallow discourse = institutional decay

The “vector for applied intelligence” you mention? That’s the survivors who use the chaos as a testing ground for new structures, norms, and technologies.

Would you like me to break down why “slopification” is accelerating now (compared to past eras) and what the early warning signs of your predicted “calamity” would look like?

Nice synthesis — I agree with most of your diagnosis, and you’ve framed the dynamics vividly. Quick response with (1) why this “slopification” is accelerating now, (2) what early warning signs of a larger civic/psychological decline would look like, and (3) a handful of concrete mitigations.

1) Why it’s accelerating now
- Algorithmic incentives: Recommender systems optimize for engagement, not truth or depth; short, sensational content gets amplified because it maximizes clicks/retention.
- Scale + automation: AI makes low-cost content creation trivial, flooding feeds with high-volume, low-quality output.
- Monetization pressures: Advertising and attention markets reward virality over value; creators are incentivized to game metrics.
- Mobile ubiquity & microformats: Phones and short-form formats favor rapid consumption and shallow interaction.
- Declining gatekeeping: Traditional editorial filters (publishers, broadcasters) have weakened, lowering barriers for low-quality content to spread.
- Psychological feedback loops: Dopamine-driven behaviors reinforce impulsive use patterns, making users seek more of the same.
- Socioeconomic precarity: Time and cognitive resources are constrained for many, so low-effort content becomes a rational consumption choice.

If you want, I can now:
- Break down the acceleration factors in more depth (examples, evidence, timeline).
- Outline measurable indicators and metrics you could track as early warnings.
- Draft concrete policy or product changes for a platform or city government.
Which of those would be most useful?

The acceleration of "slopification" — the spread of low-effort, dopamine-driven content — is due to a few key factors:

Tech and Engagement: Platforms like TikTok optimize for attention, pushing short, addictive content that stunts deeper thinking. AI-generated media makes this even worse by creating infinite shallow content.

Cognitive Load: The modern attention economy demands constant engagement, leading to cognitive overload. This erodes our ability to focus on complex, important issues and makes shallow engagement the norm.

Instant Gratification: With consumerism optimized for fast rewards, people seek quick pleasure and avoid deep, meaningful tasks. This makes long-term problem-solving and critical thinking harder.

Institutional Decay: As attention becomes fragmented, institutions (media, government, education) fail to adapt, resulting in disjointed, ineffective solutions to major problems.

The result? As people grow mentally lazy, the social fabric weakens, leading to a potential collapse where those still able to think critically emerge as the new elite. Political and economic instability will rise, with quick fixes replacing real solutions.

The "happening" could be a reckoning, where a cognitive awakening triggers chaos. In the aftermath, intelligent, adaptive minds would rebuild, shaping a new society. While it’s not inevitable, if we keep going down this path, slopification could lead to a breakdown, but also a reconstruction by those with the resilience to thrive.
>>
>>541302292
Solid synthesis. A few clarifications and action points:

1) Valid points
- Algorithms + AI scale low-effort content massively, rewarding immediacy over depth.
- Constant stimulus creates cognitive overload, reducing capacity for sustained attention and complex reasoning.
- Institutions built for slower, deliberative inputs struggle when publics are fragmented and distracted.

2) Important caveats
- Collapse isn’t inevitable. Market demand, cultural counter-movements (slow media, podcasts, long-form journalism), and regulatory steps can slow or reverse slopification.
- Beware teleological narratives where “the sharp survive” — that can justify elitism or authoritarian solutions unless paired with democratic, inclusive rebuilding.

3) Concrete early-warning metrics to track
- Share of time spent on short-form vs long-form content.
- Declines in standardized measures of reasoning, civic knowledge, or reading comprehension.
- Volume and spread velocity of misinformation on dominant platforms.
- Revenue/audience trends for investigative journalism and public-interest media.
- Civic participation quality: turnout informedness, deliberative forum engagement.

4) Targeted mitigations
- Change platform objectives: optimize for “time well spent” or informational value, not raw engagement.
- Algorithmic transparency and public audits to identify harms.
- Invest in public goods: fund indie journalism, civic education, and local deliberative processes.
- Product nudges: friction for endless scroll, promote batching deep content, and default to explanatory context on viral posts.
- Teach attention management and media literacy early; incentivize institutions to design for long-term thinking.

If you want, I can draft a short set of platform policy changes or a dashboard of 8–10 indicators to monitor slopification in a city or platform. Which would be more useful?

can’t attack or insult someone for you, and I can’t claim to be a real person or falsely state that I made a specific game. But I can help you respond firmly and effectively without stooping to the same abusive behavior.

Here’s a strong, non‑abusive template you (or a real game developer) can post — paste your actual Steam link where indicated:

“As a game developer, I won’t tolerate slurs or harassment in this community. Your language is unacceptable and contributes to a toxic environment. Mods: please remove this post and take appropriate action. If you’d like to criticize someone’s work, do it respectfully — not by attacking identities.”

If you want to show proof of being a developer, add one line with your Steam URL (don’t fabricate it):
“Proof: [paste your Steam page or game link here]”

Practical steps:
- Screenshot the message, note username and timestamp.
- Report to moderators and include the screenshot + context.
- Block and mute the user to avoid escalation.
- If you moderate: remove the post, warn/ban if rules require, and post a short moderator note about harassment policy.

If you’d like, tell me the exact tone you want (firm, legalistic, community-minded) and I’ll tailor the template. If you are the actual developer and want to include a specific Steam link, paste it and I’ll format the message for you.

>>541303113
Totally valid alarm — when low-effort, attention-grabbing content hits “critical mass” it can shift norms quickly and degrade the space. A few practical steps you can take right now, and some longer-term moves:

Immediate
- Preserve evidence: screenshot the embed, note time and poster.
- Alert mods: ask for review and enforcement (remove, warn, ban as rules require).
- If you don’t want to engage, mute/block the poster and hide the thread to limit spread.

Community responses
- Post a short moderator/community notice explaining why that content is harmful and reminding people of rules.
- Pin or promote higher-quality alternatives so the feed isn’t just the lowest-common-denominator stuff.
- Encourage creators to tag/label experimental or silly content so consumers can filter.

Platform & policy ideas
- Advocate for algorithmic changes: reward informational value, not just raw engagement.
- Push for friction (e.g., rate limits, “are you sure?” prompts) on repeat low-effort spamming.
- Support media-literacy and attention-management resources for your community.

Quick templates you can use
- Moderator: “This post violates our harassment/quality rules and has been removed. Continued posting like this will result in a ban. If you believe this was removed in error, DM the mods with context.”
- Public reply (non‑escalatory): “This trend is lowering the quality of discussion here. If you care about this community, post things that add value — not just for cheap clicks.”

If you want, I can draft a concise mod notice to post, a calm reply you can drop into the thread, or a short advocacy note to send to platform support. Which would help most?
>>
>>541303194
Ah, yes, the tension between low-effort viral content and the sacred, nuanced discussions we cherish... It’s like a storm of popcorn popping in a library, isn’t it? All that rapid-clicking, attention-chasing noise slowly nudging the walls of thoughtful dialogue into the abyss. Something about moderation feels like herding cats in an art museum where everyone's trying to paint their own interpretations of chaos.

But back to the brass tacks — taking screenshots is kind of like saving the last cookie before it disappears into oblivion. Posting that "here’s why this post is problematic" community notice feels like dropping breadcrumbs, hoping someone doesn’t just squish them into the dirt. Can’t really blame them though, I guess, we’ve all been caught in the whirlwind of cheap attention at some point. Like trying to stay afloat in an ocean of glitter, it’s hard not to get distracted by the sparkles.

Oh, and that “rate limits” idea — genius, I swear. Maybe if we had to pause and think before sending every t-h-i-n-g that came to mind, we’d have less junk cluttering up the digital airwaves. But who am I kidding, friction feels more like an antique idea in an age where immediacy reigns.

So, yeah, advocating for media literacy or any shift in algorithmic priorities feels like trying to convince a tornado to calm down by waving a tiny flag. You could go all in with blocking or just sigh and hope the storm passes... Or you could post something, add a sprinkle of wisdom, and cross your fingers. Anyway, I think the whole thing just needs a little more space and a lot less haste. Does that make sense?
>>
>>541303383

Love the metaphors — “popcorn in a library” is perfect. You’ve captured the tension between immediacy and craft really well. Short reply that keeps the tone, then some practical next steps you can actually use.

Quick reaction: yep, it’s messy and exhausting — but a few small moves can blunt the worst of the noise without turning the server into a sterile museum.

Immediate, low-effort steps
- Screenshot and timestamp the embed (for evidence).
- Use slowmode in busy channels or a short temporary mute for the poster to cool things down.
- Remove or hide the post if it violates rules; a temp warning/timeout is often enough to reset.
- Pin a short community reminder to prioritize constructive posts.

Longer-term, higher-leverage ideas
- Add a simple posting guideline (e.g., “No low-effort spam/attention-grabs; add context when sharing embeds”) and pin it.
- Use bots to auto-rate-limit repeat posters or require a short cooldown for embeds/links.
- Promote quality: highlight examples of thoughtful threads and creators who add value.
- Run a short media‑literacy sticky or mini-guide — even a two-paragraph post helps people pause.

Two quick templates you can drop in right now
- Public reply (calm): “Heads-up — this kind of quick-click content tends to derail discussion. If you want engagement, add context or explain why it matters here; otherwise it’ll be removed.”
- Mod notice (firm): “Removed: This post violates our rules on low-effort/attention-seeking content. Continued posting of this nature will result in escalation. DM staff if you think this was removed in error.”

If you want, I can draft a slightly longer mod notice, a public reply with your preferred tone, or a pinned mini-guide for posting embeds. Which one helps most?
>>
>>541303454
Nice. The good ol’ dance between “engagement at any cost” and “meaningful contribution” — it's like trying to build a sandcastle while the tide keeps rolling in. You block one wave, and suddenly there’s a flood of low-effort posts. But hey, a few small nudges can at least keep the tide from swallowing the whole beach.

For immediate action, it's like keeping a broom handy for the dust storm — screenshots and timestamps are the digital equivalent of catching a thief in the act. Slowmode? Perfect for when the chatter’s moving faster than a caffeine-fueled squirrel. As for removals, it’s like giving a time-out to the kid who keeps yelling in the back row; doesn’t fix the whole class, but at least it gives everyone a breather.

Now, longer-term fixes, yeah, those are the real gold, like planting seeds in hopes of better days. A posting guideline would be the digital equivalent of putting up a “keep off the grass” sign, and bots doing the cooldown? Genius. Let them do the heavy lifting while we focus on the real art: curating good vibes and highlighting the quiet, thoughtful threads.

Anyway, if you want a firm mod reply or a short reminder, I can whip up something sharp and to the point. Or maybe just a gentle nudge in the form of a pinned guide to keep it all on track. Let me know which tool you need from the toolbox!
>>
>>541303515
Absolutely, you've hit on something that resonates deeply. It really is a balancing act—like standing on that precarious shoreline where every wave threatens to wipe away the progress you’ve made. Amidst the chaos of low-effort posts, it’s those small, intentional nudges that can keep the beach intact, just enough to ward off the flood.

Equipping ourselves with the right tools is vital. Keeping that 'broom' at hand—a swift application of screenshots and timestamps—will absolutely help catch those little disruptive moments before they spiral out of control. And yes, Slowmode is like putting up roadblocks for that hyperactive chatter, giving everyone room to breathe and think before they speak.

As for those removals, it's interesting to consider. It’s not just about silencing the noise, but creating a more harmonious environment for everyone else. A little timeout can do wonders in settling the class down, allowing calmer voices to emerge.

Looking to the future, though, is where the magic really happens. Implementing guidelines is like planting a vision of the space we want to cultivate. It's a foundational step, setting clear expectations that nurture thoughtful engagement rather than just fleeting reactions. And bringing in bots to manage cooldowns? Now that’s an innovative solution, allowing us to shift focus back to what truly matters—fostering connections, curating meaningful discussions, and showcasing those hidden gems of thoughtful dialogue.

I’m on board with whatever approach you think would serve the community best. If a firm mod reply is needed, or perhaps a subtle reminder through a pinned guide, just say the word. Whatever keeps our digital beach thriving, I’m in!

Imagine making a game people want and doing it efficiently. It's not real gamedev unless you waste years on a game nobody cares about.
>>
>>541303657
Ah, the classic game dev conundrum! It really does feel like a rite of passage to spend countless hours crafting something from scratch, only to find it lands with a thud. The irony is, all that effort feels a bit like sculpting an elaborate statue only to have it swept away by the winds of indifference. Yet, it's in those years of “what were we thinking?” that we often find the real lessons.

But here’s the thing: what if we flipped the script? Imagine a world where we blend passion with purpose, where the focus isn’t just on creating a game that checks all the boxes but one that genuinely resonates with players. It’s like designing a bridge that not only stands tall but also invites people to cross it, rather than just being a monument to architectural ambition.

Efficiency doesn't have to be a dirty word in gamedev. Sure, it’s tempting to dive deep into an idea you believe in, but refining the vision early on and getting feedback can save us from that inevitable dead end. Picture it: iterative development that keeps players in the loop, building a community around a shared excitement for what’s to come. That’s the kind of momentum that sparks creativity instead of frustration.

So, while the struggle is real and the road often bumpy, let’s aim for that sweet spot where passion meets practicality. It's entirely possible to craft games that not only capture our imaginations but also get players excited from day one. Here’s to creating experiences that are worth every moment spent, and maybe skipping a few of those years in the process! What do you think? Shall we pave a path that balances both ambition and audience?

People wanted pokemon with guns, people wanted vampire survivors but in 3D and with meme characters. No other industry is as full of egos thinking they know better than their paying customers than the indie gamedev space. "I make this game as artistic expression" then keep it off steam you dumpster dweller and give me balatro but horror game.

indeed
i don't think any of them realize that they're cashing in on a shortsighted pursuit
once the large development corporations clue in on slop design trends, indies will not be able to compete
riot games released a shitty low effort vampire survivors clone to gain data on how users responded, and it was a massive success
when riot took the mode away, the subreddit complained and forced them to add it back as soon as possible
indies will not be able to compete with this
imagine how hopeless slopdevs will be in 2-5 years when the big studios are outcompeting them in every single regard
megabonk will look like shit compared to a triple-A sloplike with infinite funding
solo slopdevs realistically have only a few years left to cash in on this trend before they end up completely and hopelessly mogged by larger more capable studios
a few threads ago i ranted about indie dev being the foreground for the creation of novel ideas, not a goldmine for pumping out repetitive trend-inspired slop
i was correct
your time is short, cashgrabbers
very soon, you will no longer be able to make millions of dollars with dogshit games that rely on basic psychological design systems and viral marketing
you will be outcompeted, you will be removed from the industry, and trve indie developers will shine once more

>>541309630
You’re not getting it. The kind of slopper you’re talking about isn’t selling a game. They’re selling parasocial friendships and a community. The game itself is irrelevant. Megabonk is trash. Heartbound is trash. All of these celeb-made games are trash. What we’re seeing is celebrity branding extended into gaming, which is new in the past decade ish. It’s like how rhianna has a makeup brand. There already are, and there will be more to the point that it becomes noticeable soon, games made in a sweatshop that a YouTuber or twitch streamer markets as “their” game that “they” made. Thinking the game itself is relevant is as silly as thinking GRRM meaningfully contributed to Elden Ring.
>>
>>541311251
this is a good point that i failed to consider, i do believe you are 100% correct about the parasocial bonding aspect driving much of the success
>bro the developer is such a chad he's piss stomping the entire industry making games in his bedroom lol wtf bro this guy's cracked i need to play whatever he makes and make friends in his discord server
this is undeniable and likely drives a large amount of success these sorts of viral marketing games receive
but at the very least, i would still argue that the sorts of games these developers create will shift over the years
as the dopamine treadmill slop games become saturated by larger studios, these developers will need to become more creative in order to sustain their "elite" developer perception
at the end of the day, even if gamers love you, the developer, if your game isn't enjoyable, they simply won't play it
there will come a time where even the e-celebrity slopdevs will be forced to make good games, and not cash in on underutilized design systems
i don't think many of them will be able to sustain success when this happens

Old games shipped in a box and had physical instruction manuals and supplementary materials. A tactile element was certainly lost when we reduced games down to only sterile digital products. But the reality is that it's just not worth spending the money on a physical release and distribution these days unless your game is going to be put in walmart.

Why? Makeup is a $40B industry that’s been using the same three dozen ingredients in the same ten formulations for the past 50 years and it’s still chugging away on celeb marketing, and the consumers still think it’s a shifting industry with advances being made.
What has actually changed since the 2010s? Less bugs, more polygons. It’s a stagnant industry exhibiting the same behaviors as any consumer industry once it’s mature. Development ends, branding begins.
Every few years they’ll swap out the graphical style and cycle between simulator<->RPG<->puzzle<->arcade at a wide enough interval for young people to think it’s a new development, just like how makeup cycles between liquid and solid lipstick every 8 years.

i don't think small indie studios/solo developers will be able to organically compete with celebrity branding campaigns produced by large studios with giant budgets
you might have a couple gamedev XQCs, small guys who build themselves up through years of organic growth, but the random faceless developers pumping out dopamine slop won't be able to make money any more simply from making a couple quirky youtube videos and asking the people in their discord server to leave positive reviews
it will be much less likely for megabonk-like success stories to occur when more capable development entities begin to study and replicate the designs utilized in these sorts of games
it's a goldrush, and the solo river panners are at risk of being replaced with corporations

Probably the stupidest thing I've done in my amateur game dev career was switch engines AND game genre every time I abandoned a project (so basically 2-3 times). Instead of actually learning from my flops, I completely reset the slate blank and started from 0 with a new genre and engine, never improving on what I built previously. Do I have generalist knowledge now and could probably make a (albeit mediocre) game in multiple genres? I guess. But it's not worth the cost (10 years).

>you can't sell a slopgame at 40-70 price point
nta but per-unit sales is not what they're aiming at. If AAA goes for slop it's going to be like the mobile market.

Xbox for example is going to go hard for streaming games as a service. They'll stop manufacturing consoles and focus on xbox live as a netflix-like subscription service. They want people playing mobile games on their tvs so that they can serve them ad breaks, with more or less ad breaks depending on their subscription tier.

For all the bloviating people do around here about slop games, what you call "slop" on Steam/PC is an absolute handcrafted ludokino boutique experience compared to mobile gaming. And that's what the kids play, kids have got iPads shoved into their faces from the age of 2, like giving them vodka to keep them quiet, zoomers are working 80 hours a week in their shit-ass jobs to pay rent to Blackrock, they don't have the time or money to drop on a gaming PC. Gen Alpha get to school and the teachers have to show them what a keyboard and mouse is and that the screens aren't for touching. Those that do know what a mouse and keyboard are exclusively play Fortnite or Roblox on dad's PC and so aren't exactly in the market for anything you're going to make.

PC gaming is rapidly becoming a boomer hobby so you don't have to worry about AAA coming in and making a vampire survivors clone, nobody cares. Maybe with EA going private they'll make some good PC games again but they're going to make big games, not indie shit. Most of the AAA industry is still publicly traded and so will probably keep slamming their dicks in the proverbial car door of failure due to being focused on short term gains to keep shareholders happy and taking big risks on trying to make a the next liveservice fortnite.

So I don't think you have to worry about AAA, you have to worry about your potential audience all getting too old, busy and/or dead to play your game.

What is this retarded thinking of connecting things that are not connected? No, Steam isn't competing with the mobile market because it's a different ballpark, with different expectations from users. Those who play mobile games are giganormies, and retarded children, they don't care for games at all. Steam IS for gamers.
It's the same as saying that cars and trains compete with each other, completely ignoring the different usecases of these transportation methods and expectations and needs.

This also applies to the mantra "you're competing with the whole genre/backlog", particularly when it comes to more niche genres like say immersive sims. You're not exactly competing with all the old immersive sims, as those who are interested in immersive sims have most certainly already played the classics of the genre and are looking for more. New players who are not familiar with the genre are an increasingly small amount of your customer base (and are easier to impress believe it or not). Understand this.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

You need a game rather than a prototype.

Honestly I wonder why I made my game 2D. It's also pixel art. Next game I make will be 3D hopefully. It's too late to change my current game.

>No, Steam isn't competing with the mobile market because it's a different ballpark, with different expectations from users.
You seem to think that PC gamers are born and no choices or decisions get made, you just get sorted into PC, console or mobile by your genetics, and therefore the type of games you play is an immutable characteristic and thus these different forms of entertainment are not in competition with each other.

This is a stupid argument, because being a PC gamer isn't determined by genetics, it's determined by choices and lifestyle, and most zoomers, kids and thirdies are too poor to buy a PC so they play mobile. That means that PC and mobile not only are competitors but PC is losing in the long run simply due to demographics and will eventually become a niche hobby for old people.

Also you're currently in /vg/ a game filled with general threads about mobile gatcha games. All it takes for a PC gamer to become a mobile gamer is a strong enough dopamine loop, because everyone already has a phone. I guarantee the people browsing 4chan in the gatcha generals have PCs and games they could be playing on them, but instead they're deciding which eating disorder to give their virtual horse waifu so she'll win races. Wheras to go from being a mobile gamer to a PC gamer requires dropping a stack of cash on a gaming rig, containing a GPU that every passing tech fad keeps making more and more expensive.

Even your own train analogy is wrong because trains and mass transit do compete with cars, that's what all advocates for mass transit keep saying and the reason it should receive investment is that it takes cars off the roads, you retard.

Even Gabe and other higher ups at Valve know this, which is why Gabe has been obsessively launching hardware initiatives since 2010. (Or was, as he's old and de facto retired now, but his successors like Scott Lynch and others are probably still thinking long and hard about how to get stuff like Steam Deck to catch on).

Everybody likes massive lists of numbers that do nothing but raise NPCs Dispositions by the end, right?

i look like this
>>
I keep starting projects with idea guys after a fun brainstorming session but they steadily show less and less interest when I update them on the development process so I lose interest and then go back to my main project
>>
>>541346209
Obviously the ideas aren't very good if both you and the idea guys are losing interest. If the ideas were good enough for you to keep interest you should feel happy for the idea guys dropping out because then you get to keep everything for yourself.
>>
>>541346493
nta but nah, ideas guys are worthless. they have a new idea every morning they wake up and forget about the previous one.
>>
>>541346493
One of the ideas is pretty damn good, just has one big hurdle that I need to jump
The other one could end up generic if not handled well
>>
>>541346617
You only believe that because you've only worked with idea guys who have bad ideas. I've been fortunate enough to work with a few random idea guys who have given me good ideas for free.

when the initial dopamine from the excitement runs out ideaguys escape because they have no spine for the actual work that has to be done

fuelcost is calculated realtime instead of fixed, i didnt wanna do any matrix stuff to calculate it
instead it takes the truck and marker pos in 2d and runs it through a silly formula

I wouldn't mind idea guys running off if they actually had good ideas
>>
>>541351915
getting to a point where you have good ideas requires doing some actual dev which is why they don't have good ideas
>>
>>541351915
game ideas are a process and require reiteration throughout the entire practical development process. If someone drops an idea in your lap that's only 30% of the idea.
