Just finished the first playthrough and its good for weeavoo fags like you that eat shit and think playing the same shit over and over again is good (because you're autism like the characters in the game)
>>
>>541595729
Very true but also, you're just a self-aware autist because you bought it and played it. You aren't a Chad Autismo like me who just skipped it because my pattern recognition only needs to see 3 consecutive similar events to determine a pattern.

Like most modern games, its meh, the older games were better this is for the newer fans if I'm being honest. I really do think video games are in desperate need of a paradigm shift at this point. Especially when there's a myriad of free games that are actually unique.

Game was shit.

Honestly starts off really good, cool setting , and game was just fine up to the high school. That my god everything just turns to shit. There is no reason the majority of the game should have taken place in whatever dream world or whatever with wolf arms. It was so boring and a chore to get through. Why just ruin the game. It’s just weird and makes no sense and not interesting. Just make the game about 3 highschool kids escaping silent hill town, why even do that dumb jap horror shit of cryptic weird abstract horror that is not even scary. I’m surprised this game reviewed higher than a 7/10
>>
>>541602735
Unironically the peak of the series were Japanese people trying to emulate USA rural mountain horror, a la Twin Peaks, and the moment they change the setting it all falls apart. It really shows you how influential Twin Peaks was on not only Japanese culture at large but how these mainstay franchises fall apart the moment they take them out of their original setting.

AW2 cost €50 million to develop and another €20 million to market. That's EUROS just so we're on the same page here. According to the Wikipedia page it's one of the most expensive entertainment products Finland has ever produced. If that's not AAA then I don't know what is.

A solid 8/10 as a standalone, downgrades to a 7.5 in the context of its franchise. Better when played with harder puzzles and easier combat, because the combat is pretty bad and enjoy replaying the game for endings.

Tormented Souls is really not clicking with me. I just got up to the part where you find the dial key with all the shapes on it, and I completed all the tasks in those rooms I unlocked with it. 3 hours in. I think I am going to just stop playing the game. I find the atmosphere really boring, enemy encounters unexciting and poorly designed, story is not interesting at all to me. It's a shame because I've been looking forward to playing this for years. It makes me feel upset that I'm not enjoying it.

I think that's why people liked Silent Hill in the first place, the surrealism of it all. A place that triggers deja vu, yet is slightly off somehow, almost like there's something wrong but you can't put your finger one it (because it was made by Japanese people with a very limited view of what life is like in that part of America).
I think that feeling is what drove a lot of the Western audience into liking the series in the first place.
>>
>>541651576
I'm sorry to hear that. I actually entered the thread just because I saw Tormented Souls in the OP.
I can understand how it's not super polished, but I really liked it. Particularly how the setting reminded me so much of Alone in the Dark as it went on.
I was actually kind of pissed when I discovered it because I learned about it years after it came out, and it was so precisely what type of horror I enjoy that I felt like Steam had let me down.
It's so damn hard to search for Horror games on Steam since it's so flooded. I'm lucky I found Tormented Souls and Faith at all.
>>
>>541651576
It's a janky ESL game with a sorry ass excuse of a story yeah, but I am a sucker for anything with fixed camera angles + tank controls combination. I always tell people not to go expecting anything grand out of it other than a cool little passion project

Most recent point and click horror games I remember are The Cat Lady, Downfall, Lorelei and Burnhouse Lane, all by the same dev, and I feel his games got progressively worse.

I mean, that anon could post games like Shadow of the Comet, Prisoner of Ice, Darkseed, hell even the original Alone in the Dark games, there might be someone here who's played them, but it's likely gonna be some old fogey who played them 30 years ago and doesn't remember that much about them. Not talking about myself or anything.
For what it's worth, I've seen younger streamers play the original AitD a few times over the years, and it surprisingly holds up well enough for them to finish it.

Depends on your definition. The Rusty Lake series is more of a puzzle game than a point and click adventure, but leans heavily into occult themes and has some spooks (wish they'd lean in more honestly). Then there is the Forsaken Soul series, which is more of a hidden object game.
Also seems like FMV has a bit of an indie revival.

Beat NG+ on Silent Hill f. Going for ending that requires two endings first next. I got ending 2 for NG+ though I probably should have done ending 3 since ending 4 seems very similar requirements as ending 2, to make it more fresh for 3rd playthrough.

The game will give you a "Skip New Cutscene" message when you skip, rather than "Skip Cutscene" NG++ True Ending took me about 3:30 to beat, but I had all 4 other endings, all Emas, the UFO weapon, etc so playing it on Lost in the Fog was easy.
NG++ has a lot of extra cutscenes in the Shimizu house which redeem both parents.

I was new to the series, but Silent Hill f changed everything. The atmosphere, the gameplay, and the horror hit so hard I actually dropped my controller in fear. This is probably the fifth time I've tried to walk this section.
The worst thing that was done in the remake was the lack of 100% stunning of enemy when fired. Seeing how enemy doesn't even stagger from a headshot when there are three more in front of it hurts like hell.

Is this the "grab two emblems to open the door" part? Take your shotgun and run right to grab the first piece then left to grab the second then race to the door. Don't worry about killing enemies just worry about clearing a path.

Hey everyone, i'm the guy who promised i'd be making that indie horror platform fighter.
Sorry to say but due to my faith in God as well as it being too late for such a concept to be made (Among other reasons) i have decided to ditch the project altogether.
I never even liked horror, i forced myself to get into horror just so i could make a big crossover for unjust and dishonest reason and all i got from it is wasting time and money on games i don't enjoy and nightmares.
As for my other horror parody project, i have decided to put that (As well as al of my creativity and projects) on hold.
The concept was too unholy so i am reworking it into a more action comedy style of game to, for lack of a better term, purify the project in the Name of God.
I hope you all understand, i thank you all for the support and i am sorry for breaking the promises i made by sharing my concepts and ideas.
And no, i did not intend to make this announcement in October of all months, i meant to tell you guys this months ago but i kept getting frozen not know what to say, i wanted to go into more detail but i managed to write this down after being told i should make this simple.
Something i realized before posting this, i just got done watching a video about Class of 09 and how it went downhill and realized that my horror parody project was just Class of 09 but for indie horror with slightly different priorities, i find that ironic considering i only knew about less than % of Class of 09, just a few out of contexts clips and fan animations, but the similarities shocked me, i wouldn't want to make something like that, well, not anymore, and the similarities between the creator and who i once was while writing for the project horrifies me.
This is God letting me know that i made the right decision. I am ashamed of what i was about to create as the project is everything that disgusts me now and i am even more vindicated in my decision to completely rework the project.
>>
>>541821024
Congrats on finding faith, but lighten up my man. You read way too nervous to post this here. It's fine.
>>
>>541821290
Thank you, and yeah, i was nervous, so nervous it took me months to finally come out and say all of this heheh.
I will move on from platform fighters and horror while reworking a lot of my concepts and projects.
Thanks again.

RE9 update

>Main enemies are zombies, but won´t be called like that. (maybe similar to Ganados in RE4 and Majinis in RE5).
>No physical attacks like punches or kicks.
>Progression similar to RE1 and RE2 (exploration, puzzle solving, backtracking, etc.)
>horror-action balance: more action than RE7 but less than RE4 and Village, said balance is being aimed to be closer to RE2.
>Boss fights similar to RE1 and RE2.
>at TGS, devs said they have chosen a Japanese VA for Grace, but decided to not officialy announce it yet, its a choice that will "surprise everyone" according to Nakanishi.
>New way to fight enemies hinted, there will be an explanatory video about this in the future.
>Scrapped idea: Grace was originally going to lose one of her legs, this got quickly discarded before developement started

There’s lots of great horror in RE4 but they’re mostly concentrated in the gameplay and not the quippy cutscenes that everyone remembers the best (apologies in advance as I have to split up this post into 3 parts):
>The entire opening sequence before you really know what's going on. The game makes a big deal out of pulling the rug out from under you if you're used to the Romero zombies from all the previous games since parasites possessing people was a novel idea at the time only having been done by Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing and Parasyte which hadn't been translated into English by that point.
>The game makes a point out of showing that while Leon is now highly trained and more capable than before he is now also isolated and trapped in a hostile environment full of monsters and has to rely solely on his own skills and wits to survive just like in Raccoon City
>You then get overwhelmed by crazed blood thirsty villagers who appear to be fully human but are also eerily unfazed by the burning corpse of the policeman in the center of the town square as they still go about doing mundane tasks
>Dr. Salvador whose design seems to be a cross between Leatherface and Jason Voorhees from Part 2 when he was wearing a burlap sack instead of a hockey mask/the killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown
>Suddenly Leon falls unconscious and doesn’t wake up until night time after he’s had a nightmare that he gets completely overtaken by the parasite
>The first las plagas parasite reveal at night time, something that isn’t as easily destroyed as the villagers themselves, which the Regenerators is just an evolution of, and you always risk taking damage from its flailing tentacle whenever you try to roundhouse kick it. Now that it’s night time, you will then always risk the weak Ganados transforming after you’ve killed them which can lead to more stressful encounters like in the Cabin and the Water Hall

>The first dog encounter is potentially a jumpscare depending on which route you take just like RE1 but this time they’re more SH3/The Thing style
>The Cabin, despite having a helping hand from Luis is offset with the constant looming threat of plagas transformations that will really test your resource management ability
>Face the El Gigante with Ashley in tow or face more Ganados with TWO stronger chainsaw ones the Bella Sisters
>The cultists and the first reveal of the facehugger plagas
>The infamous Water Hall in the castle when you first get overwhelmed by blood thirsty cultists while ominous music is playing only this time you also have to protect a young defenseless girl from being kidnapped/killed and there’s no longer a Luis there to help you
>The entire labyrinth maze in the castle
>The sewers in the castle with the invisible Novistadors who are built up through the sounds of loud footsteps as you enter
>Garradors, Novistadors and Regenerators all force you to approach combat differently than normally. Novistadors will quickly swarm you if you don't position yourself correctly and Garradors are RE4's version of the Lickers from RE2 except much more dangerous
>The ritualistic human sacrifices performed by the cultists when you exit the sewers and re-enter the main hallway
>Ashley’s entire playable segment
>Mendez
>Del Lago
>Verdugo
>U-3
>Sadler although not very frightening has a really grotesque looking body horror transformation
>The death animations are much more violent than any other game and still haven't been topped but skilled first time players are unlikely to see more than a few of them in a playthrough
>Subtler stuff like all of the various pieces of flavor text and notes throughout the game most of which help to establish a sense of unease like the revelation that the villagers survive by eating rotten food and even kill their own and anyone else who comes into their village

Yeah, the game might be more action than horror muh roundhouse kicks but that’s usually always the case with multi-genre works. Technically RE also has a third primary genre, but nobody ever calls it science-fiction because the sci-fi elements always take a backseat to the horror and action elements. The sci-fi elements are really just there as a vehicle for the body horror stuff. Contrary to something like Dead Space where the sci-fi stuff is absolutely as integral to its story and setting and core themes as the action and horror elements are and even ties directly into the gameplay through your arsenal and the Zero-G mechanics.

The Island is really the first time when horror takes a backseat to action, but Mikami made sure to also include the Regenerators and U-3 to balance it out. The Island is purely meant to test your accumulated skills and put a bigger strain on your resources now that you’ve probably upgraded most if not all of your weapons and it’s Resident Evil tradition that the last 3rd of the game usually turns more actiony anyway.

The first Remothered had potential. It's when they clearly rushed the shit out of the second one, dropped plotlines, and just generally made an utterly schizophrenic ass of a story that everyone turned on it. And for good reason. Didn't help that the game was in total dev hell for over a decade.

Yeah Ethan's story was very emotional. I liked him a lot in 7 for how he just got more and more fed up with the BS as the game went on and had his own ash Williams style transformation. But all the tragedy he went through in 8 was very impactful. I fucking hate how everybody lied to and hid things from the poor guy. I hate even more though how capcoms insistence on the hidden face gag ruined his best moments at the end of 8 and again at the end of the DLC lmao it was comically disrespectful

>>541859589
A quick search online finds Santa Claus stuff popping up in published works in the early 1900s, and isn't SHf in the 1960s? This is like 100 years after they began to interact heavily with the west, and 20 years after they were occupied by Americans who love Christmas and would have brought these concepts over.
Doesn't really surprise me if Santa Claus spread.

Looking it up, seems the first one is decisive. I only played that one, and I just hate in general that type of run-and-hide horror. I think Clocktower and arguably Outlast were good, but it's not a game type that I really enjoy, and so the downstream games are really boring to me.

I'd say an underappreciated change with RE4, probably because it's an often understated aspect of the early REs, is how much it breaks away from being an Adventure game.
RE1 is definitely structured as an Adventure game, like the Sierra Online stuff, or LucasArts, or whatever. I think you can reasonably view RE1/AitD for adding a lot of action to it. But, RE1 has the structure and pacing of an Adventure game.
This weakens over time, and in the classic era you see it slowly move towards a more streamlined experience. But, they have this organization of a series of large spaces, that may be broken up into rooms, but you're really solving a puzzle in a larger space, before you move on to the next major chunk of the game.
I think RE4 isn't really an Adventure game, and has the structure of an action game. In particular, it's structured as a series of setpiece rooms that you conquer one at a time. There are some puzzles, but the actual gameplay structure is more of an action game. Each room is a challenge to be conquered in a way that's quite different from the early games.
I think this might be what people are getting at when they say how RE4 isn't really "survival" anymore. I agree with you RE4 is definitely Horror. It fits firmly within that genre.
This is just an off-the-cuff opinion that I've been mulling for awhile now though.

>New way to fight enemies hinted
Setting traps? I can't think of anything else this would be. We've done weak spots, dismemberment, elemental damage, melee, bows, explosives, flashbangs, barriers, guns, melee, and hell, throwing spears.

My only other guesses would be curing them, eye gouging for permanent blinds, or freezing.
>>
>>541860558
I'm not sure I would entirely agree that RE4 isn't an adventure game, but I do agree it's less so focused on that aspect than previous titles yet it's still not quite at the level of RE6. I will say though that the way some action games are or aren't also considered adventure games is pretty arbitrary sometimes. There are lots of examples of linear action adventure games like Uncharted, TLOU, Metal Gear Solid, GoW etc. and some of those games have as big a focus on action set pieces as RE4 does but then you have games like Bioshock 1 that is purely considered an FPS even though there's overall less shooting than in RE4 and yet the levels are just as linear and open ended and interconnected as they are in RE4 and arguably may have a slightly bigger focus on exploration.

I also think something like Postal 2 is in a similar spot to Bioshock, I mean it's a sandbox style game with a semi-open world that you can technically complete without even firing a single shot. Yet it's also usually just called an FPS and not action adventure.

Bad ignorant posts
In the day when you can ask an AI anything and get sources in seconds this is shameful
>>
>>541865297
So, to be clear I think most genres are just a means to try to recommend things to one another. A sort of vague, but often meaningful, label. But not strict categories.
That said, I think I'm trying to get at basically how the game was designed and organized and how that gives very different experiences. Where RE1 has a much stronger puzzlebox feel. You can easily imagine the mansion itself was designed first alongside the general layout of how one moves through it to solve the area. after that enemies are placed within it as a challenge in that environment. But I'd argue that you could have an interesting enemyless RE, it would be worse, but it would still be identifiably the same game.
RE4 seems like its designed around it's encounters. You can imagine they defined the main story beats, "You go to the town, there's people in the square and you have a battle royale until the bell rings." The square is a place for this sequence to take place in. I get that feeling much more strongly from RE4 than RE1. This weakens later one, 3 for instance is already quite on this "action" side as I'm defining it.

This is getting at a question of how does one do pacing and scenario design in a game, and I think this is a big difference, but it's hard to find because it's on the development side rather than the actual finished product. But, I don't know. I take your point. But I think it's interesting to think about how games are paced out, how they unfold.
I think Bioshock 1 might also fit alongside RE4 because it does feel like a series of setpieces oftentimes. Rooms are designed around the encounters that take place within them.
Maybe not though. This is all just musings from an old dude.
