Funny little anecdote and read into it what you will:On the ship I was on (why I was away for so long) I held a 'pub quiz' onboard each week, and one week I did a 'who's that video game character' round - show a picture of a character from a game nothing too fancy - and Dr Eggman was one choice. Amazingly, despite the age range mostly being people from 20-30 there was a fair bit of consultation/guessing on that one (one guy called him 'Dr Egg? Mr Egg?').
